Is the Freyette F70G just the same as the production Fane F70, anyone know? Im honestly really impressed with a lot of the newer Fane's. They definitely have a really forward, and bright punchy mid range compared to some Celestions, but they def have their thing going on. I'm really looking at either some F25's, F30's, or F70's here I think. Also, apparently the Lichlearm speaker is made by Fane, and actually made to be voiced after a particular older Hiwatt/Fane speaker, so super interested in that one also.
I have a Fane F70 that I got from Avatar and dig it a lot. I don’t care for V30’s because of the emphasis that spike can add to an already sizzly amp. In this test your ear hears the brightness of the V30 and naturally reacts positively at first because it seems to give life to the sound, but it can be fatiguing brightness. Where if I compensate at the amp with the F70 for more top end it’s sweeter. The F70 could be a good choice for people trying to record high gain with V30’s and remove that grainy sizzle that can often be there, depending on the amp.
I discovered Fane speakers when I played my old Mesa Boogie head through a 4 x12 Marshall cab. It was unreal!! I then bought a Marshall cab and it sounded nothing like the one I played through. I then found out the first cabinet was retrofitted with Fanes!!
I could see that. Fane has made some incredible speakers over the years. Have you played a Hiwatt with original Fanes? That was my gateway and also what turned me on to the Deliverance. Quite impressed that you replied to this 4 year old thread. Slow day? Cheers
Thank you Michael, thats great! I’ve heard Steve talk about why he uses Fane’s over Celestion’s before, but I had NO idea that the difference would be the stark. I have to say.. every time you’d switch back to the Celestion I found that 2k hump really obnoxious in comparison. I love the sound of Steve’s amps, and I can totally see why the voicing of his amps would really suit the Fane’s. (Also, Steve has Hiwatt in his DNA from a young man, so even if it’s subconscious for him, I can see that Fane’s a the logical choice). But thanks again for your video… you perfectly and succinctly showed the difference across a range of tones. Best from Down Under fella 🤟
Hi. Yeah there's a stark difference between the Celestion's and Fane's. It's hard to switch in either direction because they're so different. But, I like them both.
@@BigHairyGuitars Yes I can imagine going back and forth would be too much. I wonder if perhaps a similar wattage Creamback would be a little closer sounding to the Fane? Anyway Michael, thanks for the reply :)
When you're playing with "ultrahighgain" tones, the severity and narrow focus of the V30s upper mid spikes can be beneficial for giving your heavily saturated tone a more definite presence in the mix, for sure, but for what I do, which is on the cleaner end of things, mainly with vox amps, I hate the V30 even in a band mix, because I want a more airy and detailed presence, and the way the V30 makes itself present is the mix is just a bit too extreme and artificial for my needs.
I wonder how the Fane would work in a cab with the Kemper? The flatter response possibly getting closer to how the rig was profiled? Sounds like a good vid platform for your profiles.
The thing is, how does the F70G work in a mix? Personally not big on the V30 when listening to it on its own, but it allways beats my prefered "guitar practice speakers" when recording. Thanx for the comparison, super interesting, wasn't aware of the F70G!
Shame you didn't grow up in the UK in the 70s and 80s then. Fanes were in all sorts of cabs and combos back then and often heard full blast at metal and punk gigs into the 90s. I used an HH cab that had been fitted with Fane drivers. The thing almost blew me off stage it was moving that much air :D
Really cool comparison. Both sound great. Have you tried the new Celestion 250 Copperback? I want to order one of those, more in the same vein as the EVM I think.
Kinda sounds like the mic placement on the Fane needs more dialing in. I have a pair, they sound great in the room, not as dark as the recording here. Great vid.
I think the F70 can also be used to add more of that lower midrange thing going on with the upper midrange that V30 has... ps. nice Satching at the end, though!
Nah, I'd rather NOT have to use an EQ to get rid of an exaggerated upper mid spike. Besides, you can always boost the mids and make the Fane sound v30 ish. But you can't get the V30 to have that tight low end of the Fane. It's a 1 way street there.
I'd spend a lot less time in post with the V30 for rhythm stuff, but the fane was great on the lead stuff to my ears. I'd be interested how an x pattern 412 with two of each would sound.
I've always loved Fanes I had one in the 80s. Loved it. I like smooth, clear speakers. I've always felt Celestions have way too much coloration. I prefer the amp to color the sound. I like flat, clear speakers.
I like v30’s when other people play them but hate them when I play them. That said I’m an EV guy. I’ve got a bunch of them in 4x12’s and Thiele cabs and 15’s too. Here I liked the v30 better.
Fane sounded better everywhere, I think V30 is very overrated/overpriced speaker. everybody just got used to have it in their cabs. I replaced V30 with Eminence Governor in two of mine cabs, and could not be more happy with results: amp became more sensitive to knob tweaks. more bottom end, nicer midrange(V30 doesn't have mids at all) not harsh top end, and over all cabinet sounds more open and not squishy, and it sounds even better with band.
V30's tend to sound their best when they are used with amps that were built/voiced around that speaker......Bogner, Boogie, Diezel, ect... designed their amps around the V30......Seems to make all the difference. Cool demo....thanks for posting it.
Yo Nielsen! Awesome video! Question; what's your thoughts on the Fryette P50E/fatbottom speaker/front loaded cab? Thx!
Holy shit, I was starting to think that I was the only person who remembered Helmet.
i talked my classic rock cover band into doing unsung. one of the greatest one hit wonders ever.
To my ears Fane F70G sounds really good. Smoother than V30 but you can compensate that on amp.
What’s the riff at 1:41? Really ringing a bell but just can’t place it. Great video as always mate!
Fane sounds great. I still love my newly aquiered Redbacks, they rock my custom built 2x12 and I couldn't be happier.
Seems like the fane has little more lower mids & softer highs ?
I might prefer the Fanes....
Fantastic, gonna listen to that album right now. It's been years! Lovely sounds man.
Thank you for not talking or having lots of time go by between comparisons like so many people do.
The Fane sounds very good. How much did you compensate the volumes? (I guess the Fane is pretty quiet compared to the V30, right?)
Which v30 did u compare it with? There are a lot different versions and they all sound different
Was sitting on the fence until you played “friends”.. then it all made sense. Fane has a great balance..

I know this is an old video but have you tried the Eminence DV77 yet? Choice.
I discovered Fane speakers when I played my old Mesa Boogie head through a 4 x12 Marshall cab. It was unreal!! I then bought a Marshall cab and it sounded nothing like the one I played through. I then found out the first cabinet was retrofitted with Fanes!!
Have you tried the VHT/Fryette P50 Pittbull Speakers? They sound good in my Deliverance cab. Very suited to my Pittbull CL100 and D120
Yes, they’re cool sounding too. I think I prefer the Fanes a little bit though.
I could see that. Fane has made some incredible speakers over the years. Have you played a Hiwatt with original Fanes? That was my gateway and also what turned me on to the Deliverance.

Wonder how v30 would blend in a fat bottom cab with Fane 70s? Or maybe some other speaker Creamback exc.
The deliverance cab is my favorite cab I've ever tried. Tight punchy loud and easy to transport.

I love the V30 when playing with bass and drums. I think most folks that hate it are playing alone
Yeah, definitely a speaker that helps you "fit in the mix" vs a bedroom tone haha

The Fane allows the EQ to be more useable, since the EQ curve is not so aggressive.
Interesting, I liked the Fane clean and the v30 dirty :)
V30 mid spike makes my ears hurt. For some reason, they have always bothered me in that frequency.
Mess cabs seem better plus they and Marshall I’m pretty sure had their own v30s made by celestion just for them
I wonder how the Fane would work in a cab with the Kemper? The flatter response possibly getting closer to how the rig was profiled? Sounds like a good vid platform for your profiles.

V30 work great in a mix. Sometimes it’s sonic signature can overwhelm a tone. It’s nice to have options.

What would you say about mixing these two in a 212? Could sound good because theyre so different
I don't know. I think they're SO different that they might not be the best for blending with each other.
Really cool comparison. Both sound great. Have you tried the new Celestion 250 Copperback? I want to order one of those, more in the same vein as the EVM I think.
No, but that sounds interesting!

These sound more alike than I would have expected!
Friends at 2:15 :) First Satch song I ever learned and fell in love with :)
Same here
yes
what a great song. Friends forever.
Whats the artist of this song??
The Fryette cab was front loaded, the V30 was probably rear loaded, making a direct comparison off a bit.
Fane has more defined bottom. I use V30s in all my amps. I like the Fane for some things.
When I hear the V30 I instantly feel back home
I thought the Fane sounded superb on the Red T dirty clip. Everything else could have a case made for either choice.
I think the F70 can also be used to add more of that lower midrange thing going on with the upper midrange that V30 has...
ps. nice Satching at the end, though!
Both are fantastic but I prefer the v30. You can Eq the amp to get them to sound nearly -if not, identical.
Nah, I'd rather NOT have to use an EQ to get rid of an exaggerated upper mid spike. Besides, you can always boost the mids and make the Fane sound v30 ish. But you can't get the V30 to have that tight low end of the Fane. It's a 1 way street there.
More of these speaker comparisons please!
I'd spend a lot less time in post with the V30 for rhythm stuff, but the fane was great on the lead stuff to my ears.
I'd be interested how an x pattern 412 with two of each would sound.
v30 has always just worked for me. sometimes wished for a little chime. mixed with h30. great combo
The same
I preferred the V30 in every one of those clips. Everyone loves to hate on them but with a band in the picture they work so well.
Please, make a video with F70, G12M20 and G12M25.
Could hear it on the heavier stuff (for me). Seem to have a full, warm tone. Not too shabby!
It’s glorious when you stand in front of the cab. Everything sounds deeper and heftier and toneful.
what pickups in the black beauty? sounds meannnnnnnn......
That is a Motor City Detroiter. It's nice pickup for sure! The neck is the original T-top
That sounded percussive, in a grand way.
That’s a Fryette characteristic. He plays percussively too, so I think he looks for that when he’s voicing gear
Well, V30's sounded much more mix-ready, IMO.
I have never liked the Vintage 30, and this video reminded me why (with my eyes closed).
Were these 8 or 16 ohms?
Thanks for testing something different.
I've always loved Fanes I had one in the 80s. Loved it. I like smooth, clear speakers. I've always felt Celestions have way too much coloration. I prefer the amp to color the sound. I like flat, clear speakers.
Celestion always colors the sound that is always perfect for me. But lately old Goodmans and Fane's are sounding better. And new Fane's!!.
I like v30’s when other people play them but hate them when I play them. That said I’m an EV guy. I’ve got a bunch of them in 4x12’s and Thiele cabs and 15’s too. Here I liked the v30 better.
its the same thing just a bit "heavier" sound on the fane
Fane wins for me, check out the F90 that's my favourite speaker, modern and loud!
I like to hear the Fane contrasted with a Classic Lead 80.
Haha i thought you started to play Unsung by Helmet with the Les Paul. Pretty fitting as they've used VHT/Fryettes since the beginning of time.
Fane sounded better everywhere, I think V30 is very overrated/overpriced speaker. everybody just got used to have it in their cabs. Least your saying it not us ;)
@@Fane-acoustics : Wish you guys would dead replicate those old Redback Fanes I have in a vintage HiWatt cabinet.
I’ve got a Fane in my Laney OAR combo, Never liked it. Always sounded harsh to me so buying a V30 to get extra sweetness. Thanks for your demo
V30's tend to sound their best when they are used with amps that were built/voiced around that speaker......Bogner, Boogie, Diezel, ect... designed their amps around the V30......Seems to make all the difference. Cool demo....thanks for posting it.
Great review :)
Fane souded richer, v30 sounded sharper
man after a second listen i may get one to try and mix with the v30
Did you ever give this a go? Been considering this combo myself...
WGS Reaper 30 watt, Eminence DV-77 and Mojotone BV-H30
Love that Satch song!
Fanes seem more what I would call “woody” ?
I think that’s a good description. They have less cut and bite, so the solid core “woody” tone seems to speak through
For modern metal rhythm in a mix, it's always V30s for me.
Fane sounds like a cross between a Vintage 30 and a Classic Lead with a mid hump.
V 30 !!!
Fane sounds better for distortion
The V30 sounded ratty and nasty in a not good way, while the Fane F70 sounded killer.
V30!
V30 has a sweeter and more cutting top.
The V30 Sounds "more organic" to me.
frank marino recommends these
full stack.. half stack of each
Fane sounded better.....
