Tip on password security: While it obviously is correct to use numbers and symbols to further complicate the password, most of the strength of ones password actually comes from the number of characters. Most password cracking programs or bruteforces are programmed to try all combinations of symbols up until a certain amount of letters (most end around 14-16). So of course keep using numbers, symbols aswell as upper and lower case letters, but having a longer password is most of the time more important.

but isn't the wallet just a client to connect to these public addresses, it doesn't matter where it's installed, all the data is in the blockchain, the only thing that it stores really are these hashcodes

So basically, MultiBit is creating a wallet and giving you a private key. Then, potentially, what could prevent developers/people working at Multibit to know and use your private key and have access to your wallet?

  • @calins3209
    @calins3209 7 лет назад +3

What if all this bitcoin wallets softwares that are available online have a database with public keys and private keys and you just think that they generate a public and private key, when in fact there is a huge database with loads of adresses with private keys affiliated, already known by the developer? It is possible right?

I don't think this is is possible anymore. From MultiBit: What about storing wallets directly on USB keys ?
MultiBit does not support changing the location of where wallets are stored.
This is by design. We found that the seemingly straightforward option of letting users choose where to put their wallet, including on removable media such as USB drives (IronKeys and so forth), created a whole host of subtle problems:
writing critical data to removable drives can be problematic due to users pulling them out leading to corrupted wallet files
the failure rate for USB drives is much higher than fixed disks when you take into account losses and breakages etc
it is too easy to lose track of where the wallet files are located - fixed locations are easy to identify

Hi this is from the Multibit.org website
    Multibit is No Longer Supported
    Dear Bitcoin Community,
It is time for us to let Multibit go.
KeepKey acquired Multibit a little over 1 year ago. At the time, the engineers who originally built and supported Multibit had announced that they would no longer be working on it or providing support. Multibit played an important role in the Bitcoin infrastructure. We felt that it was important for Multibit to continue and hoped that with our existing support and development teams, we would be able to keep Multibit alive.

great tutorial, can I ask something? If you're offline, how could you generate new wallets? What if another people are generating another new wallet offline too ? won't we might get the same address ? because those address are just random strings, will it possible that we both generate the same strings? since we're both offline and won't be able to check the new addresses.

Jaxx lets you have multiple types of coins such as ETH, DASH, LTC in one wallet so it would be nice if it works on a usb stick too. Also, what does the multibit.properties file at 3:00 do? The file is no longer there at 5:19. Thanks!

Amazing tutorial!!! Questions... - how do we know Multi-Bit isn't inherently rogue and reveals itself at one point by emptying its users Wallets in the future?- backup is really that easy? Are you saying, if you pop in the 2nd (backup) drive, and run MB, it syncs and displays the wallet? It stores and displays all the private keys you had listed? - can I use any USB flash drive pretty much?- is it ok to not download/save the entire Ledger? - do you have a video on how to send Coinbase Wallet balance over to the HW wallet? I assume you'd just do the standard process like you showed in your $.50 example?
    Thanks!!!!

Hay Mr Jay great video thanks for the insight. I'm still a bit unsure as to how the bitcoin transfers to a wallet when offline though. Is the bitcoin in a queue waiting for your to connect to the internet???? or are all wallets are essentially online and cold storage just takes your encryption details offline....

Quick note: if your computer was ever connected to the internet there is a chance it might be infected by a virus before you even start creating your wallet dissconnecting from the internet is some what safe but a smart virus keeps track of what your doing and as soon as its connected again it could still send recorded keystrokes recorded while you where offline.
another thing is that if a virus is really looking for bitcoin it can see that the wallet as soon as you connect the usb to the computer and if it is smart it will copy the wallet send it over to the hacker and record your keystrokes as soon as it type in the encryption password.
Just make sure that your computer is safe (scan it for viruses) before starting so you know you are safe i would also advise scanning your computer before you plug it in if you have a lot of bitcoins on the usb wallet.

What program did you use to send/transfer 50 cent to your offline wallet?

Nice guide; but to be completely honest with you here: that OS is not ideal for that kind of operations. It boycotts half the efforts you made to keep safe

How can funds be transferred so quickly between the Coinbase account and paper wallet? Or between a paper wallet and other wallets? I thought it was taking some time before the transaction could be recorded on the Bitcoin blockchain. Does that mean that these transactions are so quick because they are nor recorded on the blockchain? In that case, how can we prove we own bitcoins?

But you still have to use this online which means being offline is useless because you still have to get online put a password in at some point. To send money from the wallet

So now that I see Multibit is no longer supported, is there any other way of creating your own usb thumb drive wallet in a similar manner that is secure, especially one capable of storing a variety of cryptocurrency?

i suggest everyone make about 5 or 6 backups because usb sticks do eventually fail and sometimes you can't recover anything that was on them.
