"I just think they're probably one of the nicest Nintendo looking devices ever made"
Couldn't agree more mate. They're the type of device that very little can go wrong with, and even less that can't be put to rights. Even the broken latches on the multi-screen games are fixable with a bit of effort. My personal favourite is the same as yours, Donkey Kong. They are beautiful devices to get hold of. It really does prove that fancy graphics or fast paced gameplay aren't what make a good game. Excellent restoration. You are what first inspired me to collect and restore. Keep it up!

@@Mrjk442 let me tell you something:
The Baby Boomer generation spanned from 1946 to 1964 / 1966 (the exact end date isn't very clear, but it's either of them). If he/she was a 7-year-old in the 80s, and this released in 1988, he/she would've been born in the early 80s (most likely), which is the end of Generation X and the start of the Millenials. I recently purchased a batch of 14 G&W. All with stained screens on the back. I'm fixing everyone, at the same time it's becoming therapy for me. My last major repair was a Gameboy Light belonging to a good friend of mine who collects video games. I removed the silver back film from a Gameboy Pocket screen and inserted it into the GBL without any film and the result was perfect. Thanks for sharing so much good content Eliot. I'm always following your channel. congratulations. Felipe Martins from Brazil.

Elliot... just because something is a "handheld" doesn't mean it can't be a console. From Wikipedia: "A video game console is a computer device that outputs a video signal or visual image to display a video game that one or more people can play". A Game Boy is a video game console, and at least by my interpretation of the definition, so is a Game & Watch. It's just the little details in your videos that I can't help but correct sometimes :P

If you beat the 8 levels and get to 2-1, enemies start showing up. If you hold Jump, then press and let go of Game, you start on 3-1 with the enemies enabled.
You can also get 1-up mushrooms and stars by bumping the platform youre under by pressing jump under it.
This is definitely my one of, if not my favorite game & watches.

It's better to use LR43 batteries for the longevity of the device btw; LR44 works obviously, but it also puts a strain on the plastic because it's like a millimetre thicker. You may even notice the seam on that side bulges a bit. I've even lost a battery door to this! It fractured in half from the pressure over time.

Seeing the genuine happiness playing this console made it the best for me. I know you said the views don’t really jump for this console, but you still wanted to do it cause YOU enjoy it. Seeing you enjoying it made me enjoy it.

Just subscribed. Can't believe there are other people who love Game and Watch. BTW it was good of you to mention Gunpei Yokoi, he was the one I think who spelled out Nintendo's ethos that you described, of using older technology to innovate. Strange but cool concept. Hard to pull off, but Nintendo has managed to keep doing it over the years.

  • @AmyraCarter

2:32 Actually, a good portion of the G&W games are about pattern recognition, like with BALL, BOXING, DONKEY KONG, RAIN SHOWER, and others.
6:54 I'd watch you restore and talk about Game & Watch games for an hour...I love these LCD games. They may not of been cutting-edge as far as tech goes but for what they do, it's fantastic, plus there's so many of them, it's a subject that would have lots of hours' worth of discussion... So yes, more, s'il vous plait.
Also, grats on completing the first few levels. Some G&W games are really difficult...like _Mario's Cement Factory_ and _Oil Panic_ to name a couple.

That's been Nintendo's mantra from the days of Gunpei Yokoi and the Ultra Hand; use well-known technology and adapt it to new purposes. Lateral thinking with withered technology is the translation from the Japanese I think, something like that. If it ain't broken, don't fix it. Repurpose it instead.

  • @wazhoola14

Hey, Game & Watch - the best. Where'd you source the peroxide solution? that percentage strength was banned from sale quite a while back, even hairdressers can't get it, I think 5 or 6% is the max now (could be wrong). Also where'd you get the UV light box thing from? I think people have asked these questions here already but you've not replied, answer your people man. I'm apprehensive about taking the faceplate off, those things bend easy but don't straighten out very well, yours looks ok from this distance but what's it like up close after you stuck it back on? Looks like great results tho, well done.

I actually had this game growing up but it was in the shape of a miniature game boy on a keychain, I think it was a "Nintendo Mini Classic" and they were available at the dollar store for quite a bit, but it was the same exact game as this! Anyway, a lot funner than I would have guessed!

I felt the same way about that sun damaged 1500¥ Hello Kitty GameBoy you refurbed a while ago, that looked so loved, then again I think if I owned a Hello Kitty GameBoy it would have been really well loved.

This is actually a misnomer some people get about Nintendo's family mindset it wasn't always true as at some point back in the day during the SNES-GC (Unsure about the NES) eras Nintendo were much more power focused as the systems they made tried to outbeat the competition in the power department the GC power wise was actually stronger then the PS2. But they started taking a backseat with the Wii and then on using family centered marketing and versatility and in there defense it worked as the Wii gave both the PS2 and 3 a good run for its money for awhile.
But many fans take there modern mentality and apply it to the old style mentality like that was always there mentality maybe way back then before the NES but definitely after the NES they started getting more power focused. That being said this pull back on the power Wii and onward wasn't without a price while third party support was a weak point of Nintendo's it got weaker after the Wii and wouldn't really recover to where it was at until the Switch and even now its still a little weak in some places when compared to the competition but its definitely better then where it was.

I'd 3D-print a replica case to put a Pi in. No sense in defiling something this vintage.

Cool new intro, i like it! I'm not usually a big fan or intros, but it has a cool art style.

Hello I have several Nintendo Game and Watches from the early 80s which have lcd screen bleed. is there any way to fix this. Would be great full if someone can give me some hints and an indication if this can even be fixed. Is not the polarisers as I can still see the black characters ok. Thank you in anticipation that someone can help me please. Thank you
