Agreed. My first Doobie Brothers concert waa the summer of 1976. Takin' it to the Streets tour. Didn't quite know what to expect. I had this album on cassette and had wore it out. Pat Simmons blew me away when about one quarter of the way through the show he said, " we are gonna pull one back out of the archives," and then played, " Clear as the driven Snow".
I just smiled and knew I was in for a band that didn't just want to play radio hits but wanted a true fan base. It's still a great ride. I saw them outdoors in 2008 in St. Petersburg, Florida and they played nearly the entire "Captain" album. Ww walked away Wowed.

Without a doubt, the best Doobie album in my opinion. Every track flows seamlessly into the next. Love the balance between acoustic and electric guitars throughout entire album. Listening to the amazing separation on the 4 channel recording of this masterpiece recording is amazing and a testament how well recorded album was produced. A perfect rock album classic! Why this band isn't in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is beyond me and induction is past overdue.

There have been many great albums by many great bands and many of those albums had a cut or 2 or three that sagged a bit and weren't up to the integrity of the overall album. Not so with The Captain and Me from the opening riff to the final fade it stays tight and fresh and doesn't drag for a moment. Just a very, very special album.

My favorite album of all time and this may be my favorite song on the album. Reminds me of the 70s and winter. And being at Ronnies and Jills

Doobie Brothers have always had a very strong emotional affect on me. Their music goes straight to the soul!
This album and "Vices" in particular became very important to me in a big way back when they came out in the 70's and every time I hear it, it takes me there and back. Can't express enough love for this band. Tom Johnston has the most original voice and plays such great licks. I have to say, as a guitar player, no classic era music I love playing is quite as satisfying as playing to Doobie Brothers music.
Tom's guitar in Daughters of the Sea off "Vices" is just such perfection. I don't think he gets recognized as much as he deserves, you feel every note he plays. He and Patrick are both uniquely talented guitarist.
The voices, the grooves and percussion and great song writing. A very important and special band!

When I moved to The Netherlands I had this album and it was on my recordplayer for months at the time. None of my Dutch friends did understand the music. They still don't and I still listen to it and get that glorious feeling of freedom.

I teach music in H.S. and getting kids to sing now days is getting harder and more difficult. They are drawn into little cocoons with all this technology. You would think music would come more naturally with everything at the push of a button thru "google"

Huh. Who knew. A little Ukiah history. "Patrick Simmons' short solo guitar piece "Busted Down Around O'Connelley Corners" segues into "Ukiah", which Johnston wrote in tribute to the (Ukiah) area. 'We played a few shows in Ukiah, and I used to camp out a lot in the area when I was going to college,' he said. The song's back-to-the-land sentiments also reflected some of his feelings at the time, although he admitted he probably couldn't make it as a farmer. This track segues into the album closer and title track, 'The Captain and Me'."
