Narcos: Mexico Season 3: Co-Creator Reveals Why They Are Ending the Series

  • Warning: Spoilers are discussed in this interview
    With Narcos: Mexico season 3 now streaming on Netflix, I recently sat down with Jose Maria Yazpik and Narcos co-creator, executive producer, and showrunner Carlo Bernard to talk about the final season of the series. During the interview, Bernard revealed why this was the perfect place for Narcos: Mexico to end, if they’ve had any discussions for continuing Narcos in a new location, what the season is about, if Yazpik had any idea when he signed on how large of a role he’d end up having, and what would surprise people to learn about the making of the show. In addition, we talked about what happened to Amado Carrillo Fuentes at the end of the season and if what they showed was actually true.
    If you haven’t seen the trailers for Narcos: Mexico season 3, the new season is set in the 90s, when the globalization of the drug business had taken hold. With Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo’s (Diego Luna) arrest, everything is up for grabs, with independent cartels going after the power players. Joining the cast for the first time are Luis Gerardo Méndez as Victor Tapia, a police officer mystified by a series of brutal killings despite his calling; Alberto Guerra as Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, a drug trafficker who does not look like much, but is far deadlier than meets the eye; and Luisa Rubino as Andrea Nuñez, a young journalist out to expose corruption who may end up biting off more than she can chew. The series also stars Scoot McNairy, Alfonso Dosal, Mayra Hermosillo, Matt Letscher, Manuel Masalva, Alejandro Edda, Gorka Lasaosa, and musician Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, better known as Bad Bunny, playing the role of Arturo “Kitty” Paez, a member of Ramon Arellano Felix’s gang called the “Narco Juniors” - a group of rich, upper class kids whose connections serve the cartel life well.
    Watch what Carlo Bernard and Jose Maria Yazpik had to say in the player above and below is exactly what we talked about.
    Carlo Bernard and Jose Maria Yazpik
    Are they planning on doing another Narcos series in a different location?
    Why they felt like this was a good pace to wrap up the series.
    When Yazpik signed on did he have any idea how huge of a role he’d end up having?
    What would surprise fans to learn about the making of Narcos?
    How Yazpik used to carpool with the Narco juniors when he was in school in Tijuana.
    If the end of the season is based on fact or fiction?
    What do they want to tease about the final season?

      I doubt that very much since Carlo Vernar has said that it is he if he wants to focus on the history of narcos but on the cocaine boom and when was the cocaine boom? to happen because after the 80s and 90s at the time of the 2000s there was the rise of methamphetamine and heroin in the United States, therefore he no longer wants to tell that type of story we would have to see something but in another series about that story, although the chapo series itself focuses on that, because it is the only thing we have for now

      It'll drag on forever until the current events if they continue with Mexico and also there's El chapo series already. Narcos should move to 80s-90s Bolivia for next season and focus on the Bolivian narco state dictatorship by La Faderacion lead by drug lord Roberto Suarez Gomez. This season felt sabotaged; it’s like they intentionally avoided the main storylines. There was so much unnecessary focus on the reporter and the cop whom had almost no relevancy to the main story, meanwhile they nearly completely skipped over development for Amado, El Chapo, Mayo, etc. Amado wasn’t even in some of the episodes.
    Did they intentionally rush to end the series because it’s getting too close to recent events?

    • @__g.l.u___7756

      Basically yeah I mean news reporters get killed by talking about cartels so it was a risk if they actually put a lot more so they filled in the gap with all the extra stuff

    • @John-dd8kh
      @John-dd8kh 2 года назад +34

      But if that's the case why not stretch it out with Armado's development story? that happened years ago right? And he's supposedly not even alive anymore so his story isn't relevant today meaning there is no risk there.. I understand refraining from depicting too much of the more recent cartels due to the risks.. however Armado's story was barely shown

    • @soundofprice

    • @ReR7474
      @ReR7474 2 года назад +20

      Both stories, in general, were relevant--surely they heavily dramatized the reporter and the policeman stories. Did you notice that they didn't tie the killings of these women to Amado's Cartel? They actually left out the Matamoros Cartel since he was at odds with Abrego and Nepuceno. Years later it was reported that Amado talked to the governor at the time to find out who was doing the killings because it was drawing attention from the press and possibly bring more heat from the federal government.
      It is worth mentioning that the Matamoros Cartel (now Cartel del Golfo) after Abrego's imprisonment would change the way drug cartels would operate in the years to come and current ones..

    • @Dee-lm5ov
      @Dee-lm5ov 2 года назад +42

      They definitely made el Mayo seem like a new comer. They didn't give the Arellano Felix or Amado Carrillo's stories much depth. But el Mayo's son revealed a whole lot that is just not being told. It just seems strange considering how much of the corruption in Colombia and Mexico they touched on. There's more to it still in Mexico and the U.S. that can be told. I have to say though I was very surprised that they mentioned the Hank family. The Hank family is still major influence on the way things go in Mexico. And they have a terrible reputation

To start production then be forced to stop, and pick it back up afterwards several months later is brutal. I'm thankful we got another season, but I really do wish they would have showed more of Amado than the others. It seemed more focused on Tijuana and Sinaloa. I understand they were pretty much showing how Mayo and Chapo had risen to power, but if they knew they were gonna end it here, they could have kept those two as sub-plots and focused mostly on Amado.

      What do you mean Amado barely got any screen time? He was in most of the episodes! The way I see it, they did focus a lot on Alex and the reporter but they were pivotal to the story, without the reporter no one would have gotten the full story and the corrupt General would have not been exposed. Walt telling the reporter the truth about Alex was also important for his character and for the reporter to get a fuller picture of how things went down. The ex cop's story was interesting, it gave more insight into how Femicides were becoming a large thing, part in due to NAFTA and in part due to no one giving a shit until the Women in Juarez started making their voices heard. Season 3 was definitely different from the previous, a lot more info stuff going on North of the river, and that is not a bad thing. It showed the downfall of the Drug lords that had been running the show since the beginning. I think it was a good season, just different from the rest.

But think about it guys the producers and actors are putting their life’s on the line when filming this show especially with the deadly cartel wars are still going even the corruption. Mencho’s, Los Zetas, gulf, Sinoloa and others. Some cartels may be disbanded but believe me they will find anybody who don’t agree.

    Amado was one of the most interesting characters in the Narcos franchise and he was played by this excellent actor (Yazpik conquered every scene he was in) and yet the production team completely underutilized him by instead giving the screentime to an annoying cop tracking down a random serial killer and that reporter who had the most grating voice....damn, Amado needs his own movie where we go into more depth on what he did all those years.

    So, so disappointing. It moved away way too much from what made the show so successful and appealing, all for the creation of two storylines that, when all was said and done, had nothing to do with the main characters. Furthermore, I loved Amado’s progression so much throughout the Mexico seasons (aside from his first showing in the Cali series), that I was really looking forward to him being front and centre of the whole finale. Instead, he wasn’t involved with any of the other cartels. And even when they focused on the likes of Tijuana and Sinaloa, they go ahead and ruin it by sticking in sub-plots that went nowhere. And don’t even get me started on who they chose to do the voiceover during the series. Real damn shame.

    I have watched every season of Narcos atleast twice and this one was a massive letdown.
    The concepts were there, but they did a poor job of tying everything together and rushed certain scenes. I knew things were rushed when they killed off Aguilar without much of a buildup.
    They also wasted a lot of screen time. Prior to this season, Narcos had an effective way of getting their message across within scenes. This season, way too much screen time given to those journalists. That police officer got a lot of screen time as well.
    I will cut Narcos some slack. They were probably shooting this during the wake of the pandemic and this may have altered a lot of scenes and group dynamics.

    Finished the season and first impression is that if flowed too fast as the episodes were too smooth.
    As for the character development it shoud have been given more screen time -as it felt they were the third act not the first.
    Bringing attention to the feminicide in Juarez was good to see and the contrast of the cop who was living in a grey area in his actions.
    The ending of Ramon Arellano was not good as it fails to show that he was killed in a festival in mazatlan not on the side of the road.
    Overall the season was good even tough it did not show enough main character development.
    I would hope they would tell the story of the Zetas and the rise of CJNG in another season of Narcos Mexico at some poin.
