Good list! My bestie got a culinary degree - worked in a hospital cafeteria before working at McDonald's because they paid more. Let that sink in. She now does tech support on the phone making more money plus benefits... with NO degree, she just worked her way up.
I think its a good video. Too many people going to private schools paying exorbitant fees for what will be low paying jobs. Now they're asking for student loan forgiveness. I worked my butt off attending a state school pursuing a degree that seemed to have a decent opportunity while working full time.
Education is a great degree. Move to a state with decent pay and it is a very stable career path. Teachers work 187 days a year with paid vacations, make higher than the median salary, and can get their student loans forgiven in addition to their salary. Could find a job in any state or country no problem
Teacher degree will not even pay bill if you live in California not in India

25 years ago I knew several teachers making 6 figures

Or be a personal tutor.
So I'm a teacher and switching up. Teachers almost always live with someone else. If youre going to live by yourself, sometimes that's not possible- especially if you want to stay in your state and not move to a different one just to be an educator!
yay i'm happy you're going back to college themed videos! 😊
Very clear and accurate information. Wish I had seen this 20 years ago before starting college. I hope people watch this video and understand the positives and negatives of a university degree more clearly. 30 years of student debt is awful and I hope you save some students from repeating my mistakes, which, at the time, I was told was the “right” thing to do. I got a degree in religion, social sciences, and special education. Extreme high stress and very low pay. Trust me (I lived this) you can study religion at home and learn even more than in a college setting because literally all of my Bible teachers were super stressed and jaded because of the precarious financial situation they were in from choosing to be a religion teacher. Good luck to everyone who’s trying to figure out their path in life. My advice is to figure out what skills you need to be successful and fulfilled in life and then what is the best path to acquire them. College might be the answer to that question or it may not.
Psychology was always a dead end. 304s majored in it
Psychology was a bad choice, but I’m a virgin and I’m don’t with it so please don’t judge me also I did get a job with it but it’s only 50 k in a city so yeah don’t do it
@@sarahprice3070industrial psychology is on the up.
I think psychology only works if youre using it to get into medicine, or something where you use it as a prerequisite. That being said there are usually better options, psychology tends to be a default for many. Really most end up in HR or some kind of admin role

Mr. Hummus, thank you for your video regarding low paying professional positions requiring college degrees. How I wish that information had been available to me fifty years ago. In 1980, I graduated with a BA in Religious studies and a minor in Philosophy. It's rare to find someone that understands what they are. Of course, they've been completely useless for making a living; however, they've given me a good basis to understand people in all walks of life. Thankfully, it only took me ten years to pay for the loans and the work study experience was more valuable for employers than the studies. Thanks again for your efforts.
I paid off my student loans with my bachelor degree in biology. I look at bacteria colonies all night and do other tests. It is honest work.
Human Services bachelors & a masters in Clinical Mental Health. No one informs you of the unpaid internship and unpaid practicum REQUIRED before you are even eligible for licensure. Starting salary for a LCAS in my area, $58,611 ($28 per hour) 🙄 I made more slinging drinks part-time in my 20s.
Thank you for the content! The importance of information is extremely understated! Financial literacy and the ability to assign value to your time are not concepts you start learning as an adult.
I think the problem is people thinking 60k starting salary is low. It’s silly that 20-somethings think it’s normal to make 6 figures right out of school.
I agree that my student debt was not worth my degree, but I am happy to be a theology teacher in a catholic school and i get to teach the faith that means a lot to me. I make 62.5K and have a pension plan so it isn't so bad for me. I know others be struggling
Exceptional content as always Shane! Not being able to get a full time job equals lifetime debt.
Other majors that are losers in the student debt vs earnings game based on what I've seen:

Data Analytics, if a person ends up with a Data Analyst job, rather than a Data Science job.
Yeah Data science is just data analytics but better
@@mentalish9417 - In my experience, the only significant difference between data analytics and data science is the organizational function from which they originated. Data analytics generally originated out of finance and accounting for financial statement analysis and business planning. Data science originated out of IT and operations functions for business control tasks. Even when data analytics requires use of programming languages, instead of spreadsheets, it typically carries the stereotype of being just accountants overextending the use of Excel. Thus, lower pay and lower organizational status than data science.
Also, data analytics hiring is trending to be more based on practical skills and knowledge, rather than academic degrees, while data science still seems to require an academic degree even when the work is based on practical IT skills that can be developed without academic study.
Most diploma mills have degree programs that have no return on investment
I have about 125 of 150 left. I do make a lot of money though and plan to have it paid off by the end of 2026.
hey shane could make a video on degrees or majors for future digital nomads
I wish I only had $40k in debt.
That's not bad.

Can you make a video or maybe even just give a tip about sports management? Im very passionate about it but i know its extremely risky, so im double majoring in that and finance incanse of anything.
I need something abt architecture, is it worth the 5 years of your life? Is it actually demanding in abroad?
My Dad had a bakery business and had a Culinary Education.
Is there any difference in marketing and a business because I'm 15 and doing a assessment and need help to pick one
Marketing is much more restricted than business......
Honestly both are kinda bad but business is better
I would add a caveat to the religious study if one wants to become a catholic priest its not a matter of you can get around the church expects you to get a degree on theology and such since they see priest as you need this for the job
What about aviation?
Just curious what Shane’s degree is in?
Chemistry or Chemical Engineering if i remember well
He was a pharmacist, but he mentioned a lot of his friends from school are still struggling to pay off their debt. He mentions it in the video about degrees that keep you poor.
opinion on geography degree?
And Also Economics degree
13:45 The number of people that lie by saying they're passionate about X (while X is free in the public library) is really incredible. They really mean they want a title and a high paying job they've been tricked into thinking exists for doing something fun. 😂
There needs to be a college football team named the schemers
Culinary Arts = Restaurant Owner
12:00 "Honors" but too dumb to know what a useless degree is. 😂
EDBA and DBA programs can set you back $60K -$120K, with no outcome gaurantee - these programs seem like bad deal.
VR&E GI Bill 💸….
Any thoughts about Applied Mathematics degree?
Entering the later stages of fascist imperialist capitalism, there is practically no college degree that is worth it anymore. College is not a job training program. Companies used to train college graduates in well paid jobs. Now they provide zero training and expect you to have three years of experience doing five different jobs just to qualify for entry-level. The only reason to go to college is if you plan to enter a very high paying field that absolutely requires college in order to qualify usually for some kind of state license. What people should be learning instead is class based revolution. That will be the number one skill to have now.
Did you just say preparing for war will be the number one skill? I guess that’s not wrong if there is a war
Imagine EDUCATION being a degree that leaves one destitute for life...
Capitalism has failed.
Lets go back to feudalism

Wrong.
You forgot marketing
