    Do you think the incoming G81 M3 Touring will kill off RS 4 sales completely?

    • @maestroadam
      @maestroadam 2 года назад +22

      No, I don't think so. I have a BMW and an Audi, and they are totally different things, and I love them for different reasons.

    • @TeacherToolkitDemo
      @TeacherToolkitDemo 2 года назад +14

      Unless the Audi is considerable cheaper what's the point in buying the Audi.

    • @maestroadam
      @maestroadam 2 года назад +23

      @@TeacherToolkitDemo Well, over here in Canada, Audis have a reputation for being excellent in the snow. Where I live, it's covered in snow 8 months of the year. For instance, even X-Drive BMWs get stuck because they are very low to the ground, my 1 series included. Whereas my Audi has much better ground clearance, even though it's an S3 and not an SUV. Audis actually outsell BMWs quite significantly up here!

      It's too "in your face" to be a sleeper daily like an Audi RS car. Nobody (or nearly nobody) really needs the bonus performance over the M340i though, so just buy that.

    Joe…awesome, in-depth, unbiased review. I have that RS4 and it’s properly brutally savage when floored. We had a RS3 before, again savage, but not with this urgency. The XDrive, I assume is more again. Appreciate ageing RS4 interior but you know what, we get sooooo many thumbs up when we go anywhere in our RS4. With 2 kids, a dog, and a petrol head dad, we honestly wouldn’t change a thing….

      & for anyone who knows history to know that had VW not bought moribund Audi from Daimler in the '60's they may not have survived post-Beetle. Instead, as with Daimler having to buy independent tuner AMG from former employees to compete with M, VW had to reconfigure fwd. brand Audi to compete with BMW because they couldn't with their own brand (e.g., Phaeton & its heavyweight power dash vent covers). Performance BMW still product planning for larger manufacturers, witness Hyundai N & Cadillac V. Meanwhile, BMW move the goal again by halving ICE production for 25 neu EV (while Mazda introduce their 1st I6 a century after BMW's & years after naming their cars after BMW).

    I test drove both cars back to back. Your comments about the interior comparisons are spot on, you definitely notice it but having physical heating/cooling controls in the Audi are definitely a plus. The RS4 I drove had adaptive damping and the ride in comfort mode was far more luxurious than the M3 in efficient. That one point highlights the difference in design philosophies between Audi RS and BMW M. In comfort mode the RS4 feels just like a A4 Avant, but the M3 is always a M car no matter how fast or slow you drive it. At the end of the day, I ordered the significantly more expensive G81 M3 Comp xDrive Touring because the G8x series M3 is a truly special car and probably the last of it's kind.

    Great comparison Joe! The M3 Comp xDrive is brilliant all things considered. I decided on a 2022 RS5 Sportback because it was up there in performance compared to the M3 (not quite there) but it was a better daily driver for me...which is what I do with my car most of the time (and yes DRC makes a HUGE difference in the comfort level). I had a 2020 M340i XDrive previous to the RS5, and I would argue that the "M Lite" felt better suited for daily use, and felt "faster" around town than the M3. The B58 is a glorious engine, as is the S58, it's all about how you use the power plant and what you use your car for.

    • @evaristocorripio5434
      @evaristocorripio5434 2 года назад +2

      Exactly, the m3 is def the better track car and to drive it on the edge, but these cars are basically going to be daily drivers and the audi rs5 is definitely the better one for that purpose and its still very fast and fun to drive. In my opinion looks way better and has a better interior so I would choose it also. You can tune it of course and get more power out of it!

  • @jediali221
    @jediali221 2 года назад +2

    This seems like a pretty spot on review, would love to drive the RS4 in anger, :). However close the cars are in performance etc though these cars really split the buying market. Heck even the G8x owners groups are arguing about its merits and what options are the right ones (those seats being a great example).
    The M3 is a committed purchase (I have one) but its growing more and more on me rather than being a regret. It is 2 generations of improvement in one. It will make you a focal point for the confusion (good and bad) that the car has in others eyes though.
    Coming from RWD cars I would personally never go for the RS4 but I get the type of buyer that would.
    The whole engine power thing might sound like a contradiction but its about right tbh. Just the way it has a lower compression ratio than the likes of the B58.

    You have street cred, so you can criticize the S58, but I've made the same comments on the BMW forums and have gotten flamed.
    The S58 is a brilliant engine, but its flaw is the lack of low end torque, which is just idiocy in a daily driver, esp. the X3M. Not sure why the BMW engineers couldn't have just made a better B58.

    • @JoeAchilles1
      @JoeAchilles1  2 года назад +4

      I've said it since day one when the X3M launched, people gave me shit about saying that too... We need to remember there are lots of "experts" online, especially on forums.... Most of them haven't driven a modern 118d, let alone an X3M or G80/82.
      The S58 does lack low down grunt/torque, that's a fact. 👌

    • @harperium_3276
      @harperium_3276 2 года назад +3

      @@honza2755 It's annoying - you have to learn how to drive around it. For example, you're in D1, 2nd gear, approaching a right turn with an oncoming car, but there's time to make the turn in front of the car if you step on it. So you mash the throttle, and nothing happens, because you're in 2nd gear at like 1000 RPMs, and D1 will NOT downshift into first, at all. So, you are embarrassed and hopefully not rear-ended... The solution is to shift with the paddles and make sure in that scenario. that your'e in 1st gear...D2 and D3 will downshift into first, but only after pressing the throttle in a lot more than you'd expect. Which is why I just manually shift these days.

    I have a F31 M-perf. I recently test drove a G20 M340 x drive thinking it might be time to move up. But in comparison (imo) it felt muted and far less visceral. I'm now thinking an F80 is a better upgrade path - although your G80 does look bloody good - love the look. Do you have any thoughts on the F80 compared to the G80?

    No offence but saying the Eventuri intake and Milltek exhaust will add “a couple of bhp” is just laughable. The products state the gains they give so the “couple” will actually be quite a bit. And I’m not knocking those companies either as I’ve got an Eventuri intake on my RS3 so I know the gains 😊

    The RS4/5 for this gen even when brand new weren’t the most competitive. Rumour has it the completion pack adds a lot to the cars, but it’s already too late in the model year. Let’s see how Audi does with the B10 gen I’m worried it’ll be a 4cyl hybrid.

    Hmmm in my mind it's a tough decision.
    If I also have a sports car than I would choose the RS4. If I had to buy 1 car then it would be the M3.
    Don't know why, but I really love the slightly more subtle looks of that RS4.

    Great review Joe.
    One advantage of the RS4 is that you can order a pan sunroof with it. This isn’t an available option with a M3 or M3 Estate.
    I’m sure, (well hope) the dynamic adjustable suspension is not as noisy as my RS4. My 2020 RS4 Vorsprung has been in my local dealer for months trying to fix it.

    The RS4 you would think at that price point, at minimum, you would at least get memory seats on the drivers side? You get it in the Vorsprung trim but c'mon... in 2022 how that isn't standard for a premium product is just jokes. For the equivalent Mercedes (C63) you get far more for your money as standard.

    I love your reviews but even as a BMW fan this should’ve been stock for stock. Downplaying the fact that the intake and exhaust won’t add as much because it isn’t tuned doesn’t make sense as both of them combined would add a ‘minimum’ of 30bhp since it’s turbocharged. Looking forward to your next test of the touring & the rs4.
