Why Dungeon Leveling is SLOWER Than Questing

- Viewers have been asking me this question for years, so I figured it was about time for me to finally compare the two directly and provide a definitive answer. Initially I expected this video to be a fairly clear-cut explanation on why dungeon leveling isn't efficient, but my findings contradicted this assumption, so I was forced to revise my route and get a new World Record.
If you want to watch my recent 10-70 World Record run, you can find it here: • Dragonflight 10-70 Spe...
If you're looking to level up your characters as quickly as possible, you can find my written Leveling Guide over at my website, harldan.com.

If you're only interested in the 60-70 part of the run, I also uploaded my Guardian Druid questing-only run which has a time of 3 hours and 21 minutes. You can watch it here: • Solo Leveling From 60-...

My leveling guide has been updated to account for the routing changes discussed in this video. However, instead of being posted to the Google Doc, I've decently to move the guide to my brand new website, harldan.com. I've put a lot of work into improving the guide and making it fit the website format, so I hope you find it helpful!
I would love times and route guides for specs that aren't as fast to level, without exp bonuses and taking into account dragonflight.
@@deafpolygon Not sure what you mean. The route is the same for all specs, whether they're good or bad.
Always appreciate the work you put into these Harldan. Thank you so much!
genious as always :) and gz on the World record run :)
I remember learning about this from the world record. Amazing run by the way.
if you are running for dungeons and find yourself waiting in a long queue , try to use /who and invite the level range of your dungeon it worked a lot of times for me .
I wholeheartedly agree with the dungeon tier list and mine has been the same as yours for a while after lvling my account cap to 60 I found TBC dungeons and their quests were the best xp I could ask for, and some are typically easier and shorter than others
Thanks so much for making this. I get the "just do dungeons" crowd every time I mention leveling. Now I can just point them to this video.
I think it's important to note that it's not the vacuum that makes it faster. It's knowing what quests are a waste of time and optimally routing everything. The average player wouldn't out level dungeon spam
Sure, but that's also why I have a guide telling you exactly which quests are fast.
do you have a guide for wow classic or lich? @@Harldan1
I always do combinations of both because I get too bored just doing one, so a dungeon in between every 5-6 quests refreshes my focus and allows me to push through 😂
Thank you so much for this!!
Can i just say it makes me happy to see another familiar soul who uses 4 action bars one on top of other. I felt so ashamed everytime i see a streamer/youtuber with their 2 action bars. I also cant understand how one could fit every ability required to be binded for optional gameplay in 2 rows of bars.
Yea, friends of mine always criticize my UI but I think it works great for me personally. Everyone has their own preference for that type of stuff, all that matters is you're able to hit the right buttons at the right time.
sometimes they hide the 2 main skill bars cause of the class weak auras
I also use 4 bars on top of each other because when I play, I have spells grouped. I need space between each group of spells
I only use 2 bars with the DH
2 bars wide, 2 bars high = gigabrain
Good point about TW, the tuning on each expansion is different, Wrath ones are slower as things hit harder, vs Legion and Pandaria (unless you get the bug tree one) are so ridiculously fast the increase in completion experience over normal dungeon increase is mad. Temple of Jade Serpent can be done in 6-8 minutes with an average group skipping the entire eastern side of the map, thanks for always pushing updates!! love it as an altaholic, now 395 welfare is in the game ive got about 40 alts to finish lvling.
Sad to see you removed all of your old content, especially sad to see the gw2 drama video is gone. That was a good watch

@@Harldan1 Ah hadn't checked the playlists! nvm then :D

@@NaughtyMrMonkey Yea, I wish there was a setting to keep things visible on my channel page without them popping up in recommended. As it stands though, the only way to prevent RUclips from recommending older videos is to unlist them.
As a pure dungeon leveller, I only level classes with tanks so that I can control the speed of every dungeon run. Massive pulls just feel so good and much more satisfying than questing.
Completely agree, I can't stand dungeon leveling as anything other than a tank.
i've been level tank and healer. used your route for 45-60 and do dungeons with quest from 10-45 start with TBC and then go WoTLK.
Yes! preach it! Literally said the same thing like 3 weeks ago in a vid.
BC dungeons are just too simple and short to not take advantage of. I'd even actually argue MOP is faster than Cata but is only held down by the small selection pool and thus quests within brackets.
Another reason BC and LK dungeons slap is bc of XPOFF players. Just a random chance when you queue up you get a boosted run lol
@@kowardlywow Yea, within the A tier I didn't really distinguish between the three expansions, I'd say Wrath/Cata Revamp/MoP are all comparable.
I got a 60 boost with DF purchase. I was happy for that. Leveling the lower levels can be fun but I’ve done it so much before!
I ended up caving for that edition because I was unlocking the vulpera and got the level 30 requirement then after finishing the storyline found out you basically need level 50-60 anyway to fully unlock them.
so is this only possible with one class or can it be done on multiple classes such as a shadow priest for instance?
See a lv 10-20 rushing ramparts and shattered halls gave me PTSD from times when it was "hard" to do in the appropriate level
I remember pulling and being scared a wolf would run up and pull 2 orcs so I had to always pull back
I think the more compelling arguments for dungeons are: (assuming you're queuing as a healer or tank).
1. you don't have to research/learn optimal quest chains and routes.
2. You will learn how use and properly weave/rotate all of your abilities in a group setting.
3. Battleground leveling is hella slow, but for the same reason as point two, I queue a few bgs each time I gain a new major ability since it prepares me for my preferred end-game content (rated bgs) on my new character, instead of trying to properly rotate and weave all of my abilities in a Rated BG for the first time at max level. I can't tell you how many times I see a 2200+CR player switch to an alt in "alt group" and totally suck.
To make a long story short, dungeon and BG leveling prepares you mentally for end game content, while questing does not.
Never is this more pronounced than in hardcore classic, where the flighty and timid tactics of the questing playerbase (everyone is forced to quest since leveling dungeons have lockouts) fail in the face of danger in a dungeon. They don't learn how to use things like "distracting shot" to peel a mob of a healer in dungeon because they never casted distracting shot once in their entire leveling career. Because of this the healer dies in some dogshit low level dungeon, quickly followed by them and the rest of the party.
While I understand your point, I think it's wrong for a number of reasons. For starters, I won't really dive into your Classic example, since this video is entirely about retail leveling. In Classic, dungeon leveling just tends to be faster no matter how you slice it, but that was never what this video was about.
For your point about "learning how to properly use abilities", this is just completely wrong in the context of how retail WoW currently works. Currently most dungeons are a complete steamroll in retail, so you never REALLY learn anything meaningful about how to optimize your damage. Most lessons you learn may actually be detrimental to your endgame performance, since the jankiness of low level scaling can cause you to build bad rotational habits.
I would personally argue that questing (if you're solo) requires you to understand and utilize more of your kit if you want to level quickly. This is of course subjective though, and an equally valid counterpoint would be that many people don't WANT to be forced to learn their entire kit while leveling, though this would of course be directly in opposition to the "dungeons help you learn" arguement.
Your other point about having to "research/learn optimal quest chains" has SOME truth to it, but not really in the context of this video. If someone was completely uninformed about leveling efficiency and they just wanted to have a relaxed leveling experience with no concern about how fast they were being, I could completely understand wanting to que for dungeons. It's certainly much easier to press a button and que for a dungeon than it is to look up a leveling guide.
However, this arguement kinda falls apart in the context of this video, because if you're watching it you've already bypassed that barrier and are actively looking to make your leveling more efficient. That's the target audience of this video, after all. If someone is JUST leveling casually and has no plans of optimizing, sure, dungeons may be more their speed, but the type of person who would click on a video comparing the speed of various activities really has no reason to not look up a guide on efficient questing. (I mean hey, I have a ton of them right here on my channel.)
Lastly, while it isn't in the scope of this video, I highly disagree with your point about Classic HC as someone who has played it quite a lot. If you're grabbing random people for a Deadmines pug then I GUESS you may encounter clueless people, but to suggest that Classic HC leveling doesn't require you to learn every tiny part of your kit is ludicrous. I can't count the amount of times I survived a dangerous situation because I was able to use one of my utility spells as a Druid, and that experience absolutely carries over into dungeons. I did a handful of HC Dungeons in the 30-50 range, and they were some of the cleanest and well-coordinated runs I've ever seen, since everyone had a vested interest in making sure nothing went wrong. You could try to use that as evidence that dungeons are a better teacher, but personally I'd argue those skills need to be built first by doing quests.
Long response so if you don't want to read I get it, I was just bored.
When TBC prepatch came out, I made a blood elf paladin. While people were sitting around doing nothing waiting for dungeon boosts, I was either keeping pace or ahead of them while also doing professions.
That was Classic though
Yea, can't really compare the two, leveling efficiency in WoW has changed a lot over the years. There was a pretty large chunk of time where dungeon spamming was the only viable method of leveling.
Questing is def faster. Whatever you like the most is usually the best option unless you have some time constraint in which case most people with huge time constraints don't really play a lot of World of Warcraft I assume
I like to tank from 15 to 60, works faster for me. I always do vanilla to wrath dungeons since they're memorized. Questing becomes very fast when flying is unlocked. (60 and under)
Yeah you nailed it to 10 to 20 is pretty slow just getting to chromie on a 60 percent speed to change it it's just slow I find once I can fly everything is way easier and 30 to 60 in gorgrond is easy.

Thats all. If you screw around a little bit and take breaks it might take 8 hours but just going straight through when once it down it can be anywhere from three and a half to six hours which really is not that much especially compared to classic burning Crusade and even Wrath
I tanked warrior 15 to 80 in TBC/WRATH then tanked to max level in cata. idr if it was 85 or 90 but yeah
I'm leveling a pally so I'll be ready when the new patch hits. I've always felt pally was boring but love the class fantasy and these changes look awesome so far I hope it doesn't get too fotm though as I don't want to be OP I just want to have fun
So I need to know what is fastest haha
I really enjoy questing as prot but hate tanking so if I get a dungeon quest I switch. But ret has shield use again. Any time you can use board n sword it increases the fun factor
I dungeon level with quests on the side. I dont do anything (Quests)that has a (percentage)bar on it. Cataloger quests are the best. Take some pics. 10k. Good luck.
Great info! Thanks!
Only expection that on classic dungs the bosses are somehow over tuned and takes 4x longet to kill compared to TBC for expample.
How about timewalkings, they do give loads of exp, and are very rewarding in exp? also they seem to go way faster. Having a maxed char in your group makes it even way way faster, doable in 4/5minutes sometimes giving a whole level troughout leveling just untill about 63/ 64?
"A whole level" is actually slow, though. You also shouldn't be relying on being carried just to make something close to as fast as traditional gameplay, which was discussed in the video.
Ah the quests. I gotta do BC on my warrior/monk for a few levels
WoD was good because Spires of Arak has a 20% xp for Horde, but it's mind numbing and spread out so it almost balances out. I always go any expansion with dungeon quests located at the beginning of the dungeon.
The 20% XP buff isn't nearly as good as you think it is.
@@Harldan1 True, but that's what made it better than what many thought. We're still on the same boat.
@@Harldan1 Hmm can you go and set up %20 early if you are high enough level in Spires ?
Quests are so fast on my Alliance characters that I don't even quest with them anymore, Tanks/Healers are immediate as usual but DPS are no longer than 2mins per queue which means it's still top tier.
If you are a gatherer with your professions, Dungeon queue and farm gathering seemed fast for me.
About the tearlist, how does one select BFA against vanilla? Currently there's no option for BFA and it's commonly believed that "current timeline" is the BFA timeline, but maybe I miss something here
P.S.: Ah, so it's about selecting particualr dungeons within Cata. But then there's no random bonus...
You would still be selecting random dungeons, it's just assuming you're doing so before hitting level 30. And, seeing as how that's the best time to do dungeons as mentioned in the video, it's still a somewhat viable option as a replacement for TBC.
What about Vash'ir, you get a 450% mount there at ~14, quests there can carry you easily to 30, where you get flying. I never timed it, just wondering if you tried it in your routes.
No, Vash'jir is one of the least efficient zones in the entire game.
@@Harldan1 at least it's pretty :D
@@Harldan1 its also horrendously boring

Yes, that would be my WR run, which is linked in the description.
Is your 10 - 60 lvling guide from 3 months ago still one of the fastest ways to lvl? Or is there a whole new way to do it now? I'm thinking of lvling a Kul tiran druid and want to try to get him to max as quick as I can.
Yes, it's still the fastest way to level. The only change I would suggest is to do some BC dungeons from levels 10-20, as discussed in this video. The written guide will be updated to reflect this later today.
@@Harldan1 how do I queue to BC dungeons? I’m level 12 only see BFA.

How much does this change with follower dungeons?
It changes nothing. Follower dungeons are really bad for leveling, I put out a video covering them yesterday: ruclips.net/video/Y0zCOPc94fs/видео.html
Im surprised that WoD is last tier for leveliing. I remember not so long ago leveling up in WoD was extremely fast. All the bonus objectives, treasures and rares were giving so much free exp.
As shown in the video, that is ONLY for dungeon leveling.
I'm the tank who goes super slow cuz im new to the game and I'm reading guides so I know where to go.
if I remember correctly, one day you mentioned making an addon like AAP, is that still the case? Or was I dreaming?
I did mention that, but it's still a ways away. Making an addon from scratch is not easy, especially since I don't have existing knowledge of making them.
@@Harldan1 i know that AAP got updated by someone else recently, maybe try to contact him ? Or you really want to make by yourself, which is respectable
@@funelio1592 Nah, I'd rather have my own addon at that point.
What's the best timewalking to spam to level? I'm guessing... legion? **Edit: I'm dumb and didn't watch the whole video before posting, the answer is BC**
Well, for Timewalking there's no difference. For starters, there's only one expansion active at a time, so you don't have a choice. That said, all Timewalking expansions reward the same experience, and Timewalking Dungeon quests don't actually grant experience. This makes the time difference extremely minimal between different Timewalking weeks, though TBC and Wrath are likely slightly faster.
Clear TBC and WOTLK dungeons at least once as they usually have 3 quests inside which reward a boatload of exp when you complete them
@@virajisnotfat The Timewalking Dungeon quests don't scale with your level, so they don't matter. If you're talking about Chromie Time, I already discussed it in the video.
@@Harldan1 oh yeah my bad, I read time walking and immediately thought Chromie time lol
@@Harldan1 NOT TRUE! Take this week's Time Walking Event for example?
Many of our Set Bonuses, Enchants, and even skills and some spells didn't exist in BC so this week they have completely removed set bonus, enchant bonus, and nerfed some spells.
It's this reason why the 5 dungeons is a bit of a nightmare this week to pretty much everyone.
But for exp, yes, it's all the same and always gives 90k exp
I'm leveling a healer at the moment, not doing any speed run style things, just casual questing and dungeons. I found Legion questing to be incredibly slow. Like 10 levels a day slow. Legion dungeons by counter are a level every dungeon. Since the queues go immediately for me and it's Legion time walking week I went up 30 levels in one 8 hour pretty casual session with lots of youtube video watching and breaks every couple of dungeons.
I mean yea, this video is comparing the optimal questing route to optimal dungeon runs. The average dungeon leveling time will be significantly faster than the time for slow quests.
Is that timer ingame an addon or stream overlay?
OBS overlay, it's a program called Livesplit.
Which chromie time is the best for questing?
I'd recommend checking out my leveling guide, it covers everything you need to know about Chromie time questing.
BFA dungeons are super hard!
Yea, it's absurd that Blizzard still forces people to play through BfA as the new player experience.
True, even for an experienced player, they're pain. Especially waycrest manor, that place is absurd just for the layout
Unless you were a hardcore m+ player back then 😭
@@Vevemusic Weird flex, but ok.
BC Inis for Quests !
I usually choose Legion timeline (I choose Azsuna) or Draenor (I complete Dark Portal scenario, unlock the garrison and complete quests npc's give in Garrison)
It usually takes me 12-13 hours to do 60 levels (15 hours if I'm lazy), also queued in dungeons.
And if you don't want to play the Legion timeline I always recommend at least doing the first quest, because hearthstone for Dalaran can be useful.
I'd recommend checking out my leveling guide if you haven't already. If you're just picking the zones you enjoy then that's totally fine, but you can go a LOT faster if you're looking to level quickly.
If you're dps then quest while waiting for the queue, if you're tank or heal then just spam dungeons lmao
For levels 10-20 this is true, but obviously it's a bit more complicated after that, as discussed in the video
Dungeons are a true gamble, espeicslly as a non tanking class. You get either the fastest runs, or you get a beginner and get held back, and that is totally fine, people should be allowed to figure the game out and the population cannot be sustained by an endless sweatlord fanbase.
You are 100% correct
Take a shot every time he says significantly

How the turntables?
BFA dungeons are so simple and easy most of them are also fast in the min range. I went from 10-60 in two nights of gaming on prot pally the quests never really bothered me.
I mean, to each their own, but it's slower.
@@Harldan1 not with the 19% xp buff
Uh, yes, even with the 19% XP buff. You do realize that the buff applies to EVERYTHING, right? So it literally changes nothing when we're discussing which methods of leveling are faster.
@@Harldan1 let me rephrase that for me who has ran hundreds of bfa dungeons and very little others it was for me. I can tank most dungeons fast but on other xpacks that have more open layouts I'll bottle neck myself specially cata . So it's really a skill issue on my part it's just what I feel most comfortable doing.
@@vesical7952 That's fair I suppose, but I'd recommend trying out TBC dungeons as this video recommends. The layouts are fairly linear and they're significantly faster compared to BfA or other expansions.

3:26 you need to factor in the amount fo max ppl hoping to snag 1 good item doing TW as well. likely to get a massive amount of runs with 4 70 ppl doing the weekly if you try doing this method first thing on a wednesday.
Sure, but that's inherently random and not something you can really calculate. When testing the different dungeons I got a lot of level 70 people in my groups, so that did end up pushing the time down. Even still, I don't think flawless RNG with getting level 70 carries is enough to account for an hour+ time difference.
@@Harldan1 its not meant to be something to push the time down if perfect. its a factor to include along side the exp boost
normal lfg has ppl learning and lvling while mostly afk.
TW has groups where it might as well be a boost if you join while lvling so it is reponcible for a chunk of the time saved between TW and LFG.

RIIIIIIIGHT before they lowered the level cap I feel like running dungeons even on dps was A MILLION times faster than dungeons. Or I was just shittier back then. Idk.
It depends. Dungeon Leveling was fantastic back in MoP, and it was one of the best leveling methods in WoD assuming you weren't using a 3 man boosting group with the 300% XP potion (which most people were at the time due to how easily accessible it was). Leveling got absolutely gutted in Legion and early BfA, but it could be argued dungeons were a "viable" method at that time simply because everything else sucked so much. I didn't actively speedlevel back then (and when I did for fun I always did solo questing), but I'd imagine an optimal route would involve some questing and dungeons to bridge the gap.

Because I am super lazy I just wait for TW week to level, not only is it faster than normal dungeons and you don't have to go anywhere, but you can get the TW badges and those are super handy, can buy mounts, mogs, some ranom gear, but importantly buy rep tokens. You want to talk about saving time, getting the TW badges and buying account bound rep tokens means you are levelling AND saving time farming some rep.
