Years ago at a laptop refurb place I rebuilt mountains of these as they came off lease
for resale. These were....and are...excellent units to repair and rebuild. If you use a
lightweight distro these workhorses are still useful for those light duties around the
house. Max out the ram slots if you can and watch for a DVD-RW drive.

You say it came to you with Precise Puppy already installed. On boot to desktop it didn't finish loading, evidence the missing icons. You were trying the synaptic touch pad and nothing was happening. Until the icons load the pointer is disconnected. Did you try power on before the video or was this an OOTB boot? The previous owner may have had the synaptic touch pad disabled and the desktop boot may have been stalled while the OS looked for a serial mouse. One of the first things I do on a live boot is disable the synaptic touch pad as I prefer the serial mouse because the touch pad is close to where my thumbs rest in front of the keyboard while I type. When either of my thumbs touch the touch pad weird things, that I don't want, occur on the screen. So try plugging in a serial mouse and after desktop boot completes, check the mouse settings. The OS works on old equipment, slowly, but it works. For those go to the puppy forum for questions with answers. I'm running a version of Puppy on some i486 pc's.

Install Slitaz Linux, instead. Only 35 MB's total. Can work in very low RAM.
