I really enjoyed Starfield and completed it after ~123hrs. For me it’s GOTY 10/10. It’s one of very few games where I wanted to continue and do NG+ noting how creative it was. No game is perfect and Starfield is no exception, but it’s about whether you had a great experience with the game that counts or a memorable experience that gave you enjoyment/fun. Not about whether it does things you expected it to, even though it was never promised. I think Jez had it right, it’s a multifaceted issue. Certain gamers have constructive criticism which is fine and accepted. But there are a lot of toxic fanboys who just hate on it regardless and were always going to and plenty of unjustified hate with the most nonsensical reasons. Overall I think for some the change in exploration can be quite daunting. Space exploration needs to be about exploring the STARS and not just one planet. But that makes it difficult to have this natural exploration on planets for content, similar to how Fallout/Skyrim do it on one map.
Starfield is being regarded worse and worse as time goes on is because the game's flaws become more apparent the more you play it. All the things that are aggravating and disappointing about the game get harder to ignore the further you get into it. The better video essays just do a good job of articulating what people are thinking about the game, and players playing for so long doesn't invalidate their negative view of the game. Imo my personal favorite critique I've seen so far is Jesse Gender's video about the disappointments in the narrative and its failures as a piece of science fiction, in part because it also shows why Fallout New Vegas succeeded at narrative where other bethesda fallouts and starfield especially failed.

I'm sorry, but you'd have to be full of shit to think Starfield deserves a Mostly Negative rating and put it alongside titles like Gollum or Forspoken. Those early reviews from RUclipsrs and critics were more fair, less disingenuous, and free from influence by external sources. Most of those reviews weren't from ppl who played the game for 5-10 hours and didn't know what to think, most of those reviews were from ppl who played Starfield for up to 70-200 hours weeks before release. And guess what? Most of those ppl greatly enjoyed the game. It is only when the rage bait videos from ppl like Asmongolde (who hates Bethesda games to begin with) started popping up that the narrative began to change. And don't even get me started on the many people shitting on Starfield that openly admit to not having played the game for more than an hour or two, if at all.

I'm not a playstation or xbox fan, been gaming since the early 90's. Some of the criticism is spot on. Bethesda need to make drastic changes to their engine. The rendering techniques they use has a "plastic" look which breaks the immersion right from the start. They managed to improve the gameplay mechanics from skyrim and fallout but not enough for it to compete with the top notch studios when it comes to physics.

There are definitely valid criticisms of the game that Bethesda could learn from - like lack of ground vehicles - and I think they will continue to update the game (every six weeks in 2024 as Bethesda stated) to fix some of these criticisms. It's a shame, however, that a lot of the valid fair criticism is mixed in with a bundle of blind hatred from console warriors, people who never liked Bethesda to begin with (e.g. Asmongolde), and people hating on the game just because it's popular to hate on it without having played the game for themselves. It's almost impossible to have a fair, calm discussion on the Internet about the pros and cons of Starfield, which sucks.
Finished 15 games that came out this year (and a couple dlcs including Phantom Liberty) which was a lot for me. Went ahead and put in my personal top 10. 1. Alan Wake 2, 2. Baldur's Gate 3, 3. Starfield, 4. Diablo 4, 5. Star Wars Jedi Survivor, 6. Hi-Fi Rush, 7. Assassin's Creed Mirage, 8. Dead Space Remake, 9. Redfall, and 10. Hogwarts Legacy, 11. Atomic Heart. Shootout to Sea of Stars as well. Also, Phantom Liberty was my favorite dlc since Blood and Wine. Fantastic year of games. Can't wait to see what next year has in store.

"If you hate Starfield so much why'd you put in over a 100 hours?" Easy question to answer Rand. As someone who did just that and hates the game in its current form. The reason I kept playing was because EVERYONE, including Bethesda themselves, said that it "Gets better the more you play." I kept waiting for it to get better but it never did. It's not necessarily a "bad game", it definitely has its moments where it can be really enjoyable, but there is no way it deserves any score higher than a 7 in my opinion, and a 7 isnt bad. As Xbox fans we wanted this, no, NEEDED this one to be the "Big Win" but it's not and deep down we all know it. I think there is potential to have a No Man's Sky redemption story here, but sadly Bethesda doesn't have a track record to make me think they'll do much more then wait for modders to do their job for them. And once the mods come in and disable achievements I'm out.
I think something people often forget re:social media accounts posting ai images for holidays, is that they probably don't have the ability to pay an artist unless it's out of THEIR pocket. They just thought it would be a cute thing to do, and it was either there was no image or an ai image. I do think companies should cover the cost of more stuff like that and grant more help to social media managers more in the future. AI will likely never get a better rep for this kind of stuff.

I watch some good Starfield reviews (that wasn't fanboy war bait) and for one who's familiar with Bethesda games... It may sound negative but these reviews have points to them. The game isn't bad but for how hype it was for so long to just end up being another dated bethesda game. Base on gameplay, it look like a game that release in the early 2010s.

Boys, when you dismiss critique based on it's timing you sound either disingenuous or immature. I believe that Starfield is sometimes an 8, sometimes a 3, sometimes a 7. I finished it because I had a completionist drive to see it through and really see for myself whether there was any truth to the hype about "it gets better" or "the pirate questline is 10/10" or "the new game + is where the game really starts". I have left a bad review for the others to save their time and effort and not repeat my mistakes if they are on the fence. Right now the game is discounted, plus a lot of people got new consoles for the Christmas, so if course there will be new reviews coming and the hype is not there anymore to counter it.
Starfield just doesn’t have that Bethesda magic. Feels like a a step back from F4 and Skyrim in a lot of ways. Which is extremely disappointing after 8 years of waiting. Cyberpunk even at launch was far ahead in most ways.
Hours spent dont equal hours enjoyed. I've spent 15 hours on some short games that I have enjoyed far more than games that have 50 hours plus bloated boring content, assassins creed is perfect example of bloated boring content.
You might like AC Mirage. I did everything the game had to offer which was maybe 32 hours (Main story is probably in that 15 to 20 hour range). The visuals were incredible (turn of Chromatic Aberration) and the game felt like a blast in the past. The best stealth game I've played since Dishonoured 2. I tried it out with a Ubisoft Plus sub (as well as Avatar and The Crew), was well worth subbing for a month if you're interested.

Xbox is better than Playstation, but they will never outsell them console wise because of media bias and player loyalty. Also Playstation is better at marketing. So even with obvious wins like Gamepass and exclusive games like Starfield and Forza, they didn't shift many consoles because the media will give the exclusives bad reviews and diminish them, while salivating over any Sony exclusive. However, for me as a player, I am enjoying Xbox and Gamepass immensely. My concern is, if lower sales make Microsoft less enthusiastic about Xbox and it stops being awesome.

Impressive mental gymnastics. Fanboys, biased journalists, Engines, Engagement™. Starfield is a mediocre game with horrible writing and outdated mechanics. That's the truth. Nobody hates Bethesda, stop parroting stupid twitter posts. It's one of the most celebrated studio in the industry. MS is also not under attack from anyone, their output is just not as good as their competitors. Maybe start focusing on the bigger picture and not on the keyboard warriors. Haters will always exist, that's not the reason people are disappointed with Starfield.
I wish there was something I or someone close to you could say to change your life in the new year. Might be the saddest post I've encountered all year. Maybe after you've had time to cool down, or look at your behavior years down the road, you'll understand the rabbid hole you've went down. You'll feel so much better about life, gaming, etc..

There are definitely valid criticisms of the game that Bethesda could learn from - like lack of ground vehicles - and I think they will continue to update the game (every six weeks in 2024 as Bethesda stated) to fix some of these criticisms. It's a shame, however, that a lot of the valid fair criticism is mixed in with a bundle of blind hatred from console warriors, people who never liked Bethesda to begin with (e.g. Asmongolde), and people hating on the game just because it's popular to hate on it without having played the game for themselves. It's almost impossible to have a fair, calm discussion on the Internet about the pros and cons of Starfield, which sucks.

Finished 15 games that came out this year (and a couple dlcs including Phantom Liberty) which was a lot for me. Went ahead and put in my personal top 10. 1. Alan Wake 2, 2. Baldur's Gate 3, 3. Starfield, 4. Diablo 4, 5. Star Wars Jedi Survivor, 6. Hi-Fi Rush, 7. Assassin's Creed Mirage, 8. Dead Space Remake, 9. Redfall, and 10. Hogwarts Legacy, 11. Atomic Heart. Shootout to Sea of Stars as well. Also, Phantom Liberty was my favorite dlc since Blood and Wine. Fantastic year of games. Can't wait to see what next year has in store.

Great show. However, the idea that you can't have valid criticizism for a game you've played for a long time is ignorant. I don't think BGS would've had such a backlash if they just acknowleged some of the feedback, and their absence of critical ability and self reflection (AKA 'you're playing it wrong') makes them look even worse.

I used to enjoy this podcast but Rand and Jez have become such big cry babies that it's hard to listen, it's lame and frankly embarrassing. Just because the Xbox teams keep dropping the ball doesn't mean the much deserved critisism they get is "hate". Embarrassing.
"If you hate Starfield so much why'd you put in over a 100 hours?" Easy question to answer Rand. As someone who did just that and hates the game in its current form. The reason I kept playing was because EVERYONE, including Bethesda themselves, said that it "Gets better the more you play." I kept waiting for it to get better but it never did. It's not necessarily a "bad game", it definitely has its moments where it can be really enjoyable, but there is no way it deserves any score higher than a 7 in my opinion, and a 7 isnt bad.
As Xbox fans we wanted this, no, NEEDED this one to be the "Big Win" but it's not and deep down we all know it. I think there is potential to have a No Man's Sky redemption story here, but sadly Bethesda doesn't have a track record to make me think they'll do much more then wait for modders to do their job for them. And once the mods come in and disable achievements I'm out.
GTA 6, Next Elder Scrolls, Witcher 4, and all the other games coming in the next few years will be dope on a new console.
I want the Coalition to make a Starcraft 3rd person co-op action game, whether it's Starcraft Ghost or something else.

I think something people often forget re:social media accounts posting ai images for holidays, is that they probably don't have the ability to pay an artist unless it's out of THEIR pocket. They just thought it would be a cute thing to do, and it was either there was no image or an ai image.
I do think companies should cover the cost of more stuff like that and grant more help to social media managers more in the future. AI will likely never get a better rep for this kind of stuff.

That's like saying "If you didnt like the movie, why did you sit through the entire two hours of it???" Especially when you design your game to be wider than a lake but as shallow as a puddle, and especially when you have a faithful fanbase willing to give it a shot. I trust a negative review with 100 hours in a game, more than one with 2 hours. Wouldn't you? After all, they have enough experience to know whether or not they liked it.

I watch some good Starfield reviews (that wasn't fanboy war bait) and for one who's familiar with Bethesda games... It may sound negative but these reviews have points to them. The game isn't bad but for how hype it was for so long to just end up being another dated bethesda game. Base on gameplay, it look like a game that release in the early 2010s.
If it dropped on the ps5 people would still be praising the game right now.

Starfield is a good game, but it is also a disappointment, this much is objectively true. If the game did not have any issues it would not have received the public criticisms it got, there's no Nintendo centric channels defending TotK convincing people that it is a great game. However, I am confident that Xbox is gonna RULE 2024, can't wait!!

1:30:57 Cyberpunk at launch was still better than Starfield. Cyberpunk from the start had a much better world, story, and characters. Starfield is soulless and bland with arguably the lamest companions in a game ever. Starfield is Bethesda's worst game.

Boys, when you dismiss critique based on it's timing you sound either disingenuous or immature. I believe that Starfield is sometimes an 8, sometimes a 3, sometimes a 7. I finished it because I had a completionist drive to see it through and really see for myself whether there was any truth to the hype about "it gets better" or "the pirate questline is 10/10" or "the new game + is where the game really starts". I have left a bad review for the others to save their time and effort and not repeat my mistakes if they are on the fence.
Right now the game is discounted, plus a lot of people got new consoles for the Christmas, so if course there will be new reviews coming and the hype is not there anymore to counter it.

Starfield just doesn’t have that Bethesda magic. Feels like a a step back from F4 and Skyrim in a lot of ways. Which is extremely disappointing after 8 years of waiting.
Cyberpunk even at launch was far ahead in most ways.
Hours spent dont equal hours enjoyed. I've spent 15 hours on some short games that I have enjoyed far more than games that have 50 hours plus bloated boring content, assassins creed is perfect example of bloated boring content.
You might like AC Mirage. I did everything the game had to offer which was maybe 32 hours (Main story is probably in that 15 to 20 hour range). The visuals were incredible (turn of Chromatic Aberration) and the game felt like a blast in the past. The best stealth game I've played since Dishonoured 2. I tried it out with a Ubisoft Plus sub (as well as Avatar and The Crew), was well worth subbing for a month if you're interested.
No sane individual would play a game that they didn't enjoy for 800 hours. That is a strawman argument.

Xbox is better than Playstation, but they will never outsell them console wise because of media bias and player loyalty. Also Playstation is better at marketing.
So even with obvious wins like Gamepass and exclusive games like Starfield and Forza, they didn't shift many consoles because the media will give the exclusives bad reviews and diminish them, while salivating over any Sony exclusive.
However, for me as a player, I am enjoying Xbox and Gamepass immensely. My concern is, if lower sales make Microsoft less enthusiastic about Xbox and it stops being awesome.
Why everybody hatin Starfield, meanwhile praisin Cyberpunk (which was unplayable at release) and jerkin off to Baldur's Gate (which was in early access for 3 years and still was/,is unplayable in the 3rd act)

If Hellblade 2 turns out to be a great game, then it is a great game. It is complementary but non-critical to the Xbox in 2024 and onward. Sony's marketing tries to maintain a narrative that Starfield is a bad game and the Xbox is always on the brink of collapse when Sony's finance and management are in disarray.
