This is a 1958 TV print (released around the same time Columbia first reissued the Stooges to a new audience via the small screen) of a "typical" 1944 Hugh Herbert short...I'll bet you've probably seen the same story before with, say, Charley Chase, Harry Langdon, Andy Clyde or Shemp Howard..but it's still funny when Hugh is the center of attention!
Hugh's attitude, in the first 10 minutes or so, sums up his attitude for all the Columbia shorts he starred in. His forte was dialogue humor, not slapstick. He also had a grudge against Ed Bernds that Herbert requested never to work with him again. Despite this, he did get a good paycheck out of the two-reelers.
Yep, you're right, '2reelers'. If Jules White found a script had "potential", he'd remake it several times with virtually every star on the Columbia two-reel roster over the years (with more stock footage from the original by the '50s, of course). Eddie Hall appeared in quite a large number of these, didn't he?
RaananVolesPianist he didn’t not imitate curly, in fact curly actually borrowed the woo woo woo line from hugh Herbert in his comedy shorts as admitted by curly in an interview
Hope to see all the Hugh Herbert shorts soon. I have seen five on RUclips so far
