SSD in an old laptop, is it worth it. Dell 1545 upgrade

- Bought myself an SSD for my Dell 1545 laptop which is 5 years old at the time of this video. I'm doing a video not only to discuss about the installation of the laptop, but also discussing are SSD worth the time and effort to be installed in an older laptop or computer. The SSD that I've used in this laptop is a Samsung 840 EVO SSD 250GB capacity
Thank you!
The bit about the need for a spacer for the SSD drive was just what I needed to know! You saved me tears and frustration. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
I understand, I put a Samsung evo 250 into my Dell Latitude 3 days ago, boots in 18 seconds, pretty slick for a 10 year old laptop. Thanks for vid..
SSD. Best upgrade that I've ever made to my 7 year old PC :)
Thanks man.....👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
In this Lockdown, I have been facing this same spacing problem for the last one week. The idea of raising up the HDD came through your video and it worked. If it did not work, then the next 20 days would be very difficult for me Therefore, I want to thank you wholeheartedly.
did you use ssd spacer
@@1991abhisek No , I used a piece of paper and fold it 3 or 4 times and wrapped it in cello tape and stick it with tape on HDD.
👍
Which HDD you have used? I'm planning to upgrade, so please let me know which ones are compatible for Inspiron 1545,
@@nitinsoam6662 1Tb SEAGATE and WD both are Compatible . I am using Seagate 1Tb HDD.
The comment about the SSD"spacer" was very useful. Without it (i replaced it with a piece of paper) the computer couldn't recognize the SSD.
Can you run Linux on a piece of paper?
Thank you very, VERY much for explaining what you did to get your SSD recognized! I've been having that problem for the past week trying to revive my old Inspiron 1545 too with an SSD and couldn't for the life of me figure what was wrong until now!
The drive is the same size as the older drive, it looked like it just had to lineup correctly in there. Guess it wasn't!
Works perfectly now and I was able to install the OS and everything. Thanks again! :)
Which SSD you have used? What other upgrade we can make to this laptop
So that's what that plastic thing is for! Saw it once while isntalling an SSD in a
standard PC and could not figure out the use of it! Now I understand! Thanks!
I bought a 1545 in 2009 which then came with Vista. Now, June 2020 after many OS upgrades, it's still going. I also have a Toshiba and an HP, but the Dell's been reliable, so I'll keep using it until it dies.
it may not die.... mine as been resuscitated many times..needs a new motherboard now...
Which windows is better for this machine(t6600,samsung evo 860 500gb,4 gb ram) . 7 or 10. Considering dell officially don't support the win 10 drivers.
Are default win 10 drivers good enough like idt audio, bt 365 module , alps alps touch pad etc.
Do we nedd latest bios a14 for windows 10.
Thank you so much for sharing this! I have been working on a Client’s Dell Inspiron 1545 for about 2 weeks now and I thought the SSDs were defective… I sent the first one back and to find out I just needed the SSD spacer which I unfortunately don’t have so I had to use cardboard and it worked…
It's cool to see people are still upgrading these laptops in 2022/2023
@@lennytlm Me too, I am still using this laptop.
@@panpanifyoucancan7120 I use mine too 🙂
Best upgrade i ever did!
Hard drive failed on my old 1545 yesterday, and I wasn't sure if upgrading to an SSD was worth it. It's been my day to day workhorse for about 7 years now, and no troubles at all. Great laptop.
Man! You saved my night!! I was just tearing my hair off why the Crucial SSD is not getting detected! I was either not using the spacer or misplacing it. But seeing your video simply solved it in a flick of a second! Thanks a lot, best regards.
How do you fix it? I am facing the same issue. Can you please guide me?
where did you get this ssd spacer
Tks for the video. Doing the same upgrade and you saved me some grief with the ssd spacer.
Hello, does this Dell inspiron 1545 support ssd over 240gb? Or do I have to update the BIOS? I currently have version A07. Because I can't get the SSD to be recognized.
Hola, esta Dell inspiron 1545 soporta ssd de más de 240gb? ¿O tengo que actualizar la BIOS? Actualmente tengo la versión A07. Porque no logro que el SSD sea reconocido.
Astonishingly this works.
The SSD spacer tip saved me a lot of time. Thumbs up for that :)
where did you get this stuff
I needed to add some cardboard to mine and it worked. Thank You :)
Great video man, thanks for putting it together! Might want to run a speed test or show some basic daily tasks next time so people can get a feel for the speed of the computer. Thanks again!
I had upgraded the ram to 4 GB about 4 yrs ago and recently noticed a slow down with the HHD I upgraded to SSD and Win 10 from Win 7 it has improved the speed and performance a lot . I have a Intel core 2 duo T9600 2.8 GHZ CPU on order and will upgrade the 4500 that's in the 1545 I have . I haven't spent a great deal of money around $ 100.00 US on RAM a few yrs ago and around $50.00 for SSD and CPU including $8.00 for COA for Win 10.
Dude you’re a rockstar - totally used cardboard cutout to get my old 1525 to recognizing the ssd 👍👍
It's such an easy mistake to forget about the SSD spacer for caddy's/disk trays. I've made that mistake many times and then wondered why the SSD isn't matching up with the SATA port. Just completed an SSD upgrade on the same 1545 laptop this evening, including Windows 10 and the RAM module as well.
Tech Sway hello can you tell me what all you had upgraded in the laptop and will you guide me????
Thanks for tip about the ssd space...
Thank you, tinha feito em outro 1545 que tinha, mas tinha esquecido. Esse video me lembrou novamente. Mas eu coloquei apenas um calço com isopor. Um bem fino.
I've tried many times to insert the SSD, but the laptop haven't recognized it. For my lucky I've had the same spacer and it solved the issue. Thanks
Watching this in 2022, using a 1550 with 8Gb Ram and SSD. I run it with Manjaro now but saved the Windows 7 disk.
Thank you so much you saved me from torment!
У меня не было прокладки, но спасибо за подсказку, в чем вообще проблемма. Я просто вынул чип памяти ssd из пластикового корпуса и вставил в ноутбуке в разъем под диск. Всё заработало. Спасибо
work like a charm. tnx
Nice I might use this tutorial but is there a way i can go directly to win10 after SSD install?
My Dell inspiron 1545 :
Using 1 TB SATA ordinary hard disk (Win 10 pro 64 bit ) : 4 minutes 30 seconds boot time
Using EVM 2 TB SATA SSD (bought on April 2023) Same OS as above : 1 minute 30 seconds
No big difference.
My new laptop Dell inspiron 5510 or so (boight on May 2022) core i5 11th gen 64 GB DDR 4 RAM at 3200 MHz 512 GB PCIe NVMe m2230 SSD for OS booting and 2000 GB PCIe NVMe m2280 SSD for storage : 15 seconds to boot the OS
Why this much difference?
You should have used cloning software. It would have taken a fraction of the time and effort.
you sir saved my life with the ssd spacer tip
*Slaps Dell*This bad boy goes so damn slow it needs ssd now . Righto
This video was made almost eight years ago lmao!
SSD is great. My build has a SATA III though. There is a huge difference between the HDD and SSD performance. It's so snappy with SSD. I hate using the HDD I have. I'm not sure if it's just that hard drive, but it is noticeably slower.
If you had an external usb caddy could of stuck in the old drive into that. put the ssd with proper spacer in the laptop. Boot USB Key with the AOMEI Backupper software which is free off the internet. Do Hard Drive Disk Clone... would of saved time on reinstalling windows/drivers/serial numbers
You call that thing old? I still use that model as my current laptop now. It works seamlessly.
Zach mine just crashed😔 RIP
Aw, man! That sucks! What's wrong with it? I might be of help, as I had done some repairs to mine a few months ago.
Zach Screen is blank, the initial boot causes the fan to spin but then it stops nothing happens power led stays on. I tried an external monitor and even interchanged the RAM but to no avail.
Update: it works now! It was BSOD.
Gurprem Singh congrats on fixing your laptop!!!! I hope nothing else happens to it :)
I just bought CrucialMX500 500GB SSD in my Dell inspiron 1545 and installed windows 10 but display view is not good. Dell website is saying that it does not support windows10. Can someone help me with this?
Thanks Thanks 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Thanks you save my day
Your Ssd spacer thing is awesome. Otherwise my ssd was not detected.
The Ram is a also very helpful to upgrade in this computer. I put in 4GB
Dude, thank you very much !. you believe that i was already thinking that it was the bios of the notebook that was having trouble not recognizing the SSD. incredible as bullshit almost drives us crazy, kkkk.

I am wondering where is part 2&3? Is it worth the effort to upgrade to ssd for this 5 years old laptop? I have the same model and just upgraded the RAM to 4G after I bought it and it runs OK. I think the bottleneck is more likely the CPU or the SATA II port.
+Dongqi Mao The SSd and Ram help , I also put a Core 2 Duo T9600 @ 2.8Mhz. and it is quite amazing the difference now ..
Yes, it is worth the effort. I'm typing this response on a 1545. Mine has been upgraded to an SSD, a Core 2 Duo T9900 CPU, and the RAM has been upgraded to 6 GB (yes, it will take 4 GB DDR2 DIMMs, even if Dell says otherwise).
Once you do all of this and put in a 9-cell battery, the laptop can compete with a lot of new laptops in the budget segment. If you like your 1545 (or a D630 for that matter), you can give it a new lease on life by maxing out its hardware.
Thats what I did. For my casual use, It would have been useless to buy a new one. I put linux on the ssd, it boots in 8 to 10 seconds.
Bills BuildAll hello will you pls help me in upgrading my same laptop
John Cate Hello will you pls help me in upgrading the laptop
hey, but if you just wanted your pc start up to be faster, you just have to reinstall you os which is free of cost instead of buying an SSD, i am also using dell inspiron 1545 which came with intel centrino and windows vista, i just changed it from vista to windows 8.1, now it is very fast .....
I have taped the slot cover up to hold the sata connector because there was no ssd spacer with the ssd i bought
Thanx bro
What are you talking about my Inspiron boot time is 10 minutes swapping the hard drive for ssd. Thanks for the space
Thanks.

Did u make some change in Bios configuration to recognize de ssd? Thks

I have Inspiron 1545 with 4GB of Ram but recently my 320GB hdd died, should I buy 240/480 GB SSD for it or 500 GB HDD? Please suggest.
Try for SSD 480gb itself , in future u can use it as exyernal hard disk

Hi.can instal window 10 pro 64 bit?
Will this laptop work smoothly with windows 10?
I think I had a stroke watching this.

My situation is also same i was finding sata 1 ssd on Amazon but i haven't get
I saw some videos on yt one told sata 1 has data transfer rate similar to sata 2 and sata 2 performs 3gbps which can accept sata 3 ssd giving 6gbps rate

Dude?....you ok?....why does it sound like your suffocating?...or drowning?
Yeah, I'm ok man. It just the way I speak it a bit derp. Joys of having a speech impediment and not been able to speak till I was around 6.
Oh cool! And please don't think I was making fun of you or anything, I was genuinely curious (and maybe a bit worried!) I'm a "Humanist"....I care about ALL Human Beings....(even the not-so-nice-ones!).....My mom has the exact same laptop!.....I was wondering if there was anything I could do to speed it up a bit, I think I'll go with more RAM (currently she's at 4GB....but I'm certain it can do 8?) and an SSD...(20 should do nicely!) That should give her laptop a shot in arm....maybe even extend its life for a few more years....thanks for the tutorial...(never knew about the SSD "riser" I had always thought it was just a piece of material they somehow just shoved in the box to keep the drive "steady" during shipment!...LOL! Now I know better!
what happend to this guy he needs to make new videos.
Been busy with life mate. I work full time these days and have to travel an hr each way to get to work and back. Plus, I've been dealing with some health problem and family issue along the way.

I checked the Specs of the Dell 1545 and the max supported RAM is only 4gb. I hope you didn't continue to upgrade the processor 'cause it's probably not worth it.
Freak Zoid It actually 8GB of ram. However, I only stuck with 4gb since 4gb ddr2 sodimm stick are super expensive.
I did actually upgrade the CPU to a p8700 and it did give me a boost of performance as well as better battery life. Not bad considering that the p8700 CPU only cost me was $1 (YES one dollar!) from eBay.
That's what Dell says. I have a 1545 right here with 8 GB and it works fine.
John Cate Hello will you pls help me in upgrading the same laptop
You can buy a used dell laptop on ebay for the cost of adding 8gb of ram to dell 1545 but up grading to ssd is a great idea and 4gb of ram will do ok and the ram is cheap...great video .....just up graded a dell E6440 to 16 gb of ram and 256 ssd hd....am keeping old 1545 as backup
