Same company? That's like saying a VW Polo GTi is like a Lamborghini because of the "same company". The Puma was a good car but limited due to the fact it was basically a Coupe Fiesta. I had one for a few years and it even looked fake Aston like due to its metallic Green paint and custom tan leather but not really a GT or anything approaching it. The 1.7 engine was very meh, the ride height made the car look a little silly and the rear drums were Ford's excuse to save money on production costs. Overall I did enjoy mine but let us not pretend it is anything too special.
Maybe not any more, not many left... Don't get me wrong, it's one of the best cars I've ever owned but it was the mk4/5 Fiesta Coupe in all but name. It's not a GT car like the other options but it could corner at insane speeds. Still miss mine sometimes!
I miss my little 1.7 puma. In its size class and age, nothing came close. The only downside was rust, not on the rear arches, but the rear swingarms which are difficult to fix.
Another car i knew i should have bought and locked away. My biggest fuck up was a Mk 3 escort RS1600 i 10 years ago. 40k miles one owner 😢 belonging to an elderly widow neighbour. It was her husbands and she garaged it when he died. I used to take her shopping and cut her grass. Anyway we were clearing her garage out and i saw it. @@stevenking9473 Oil leaks? I've had a 1.7 for 12 years now, never had a single problem like that. I mean yes it has rusted itself to pieces, but all Pumas do that ;)

Ben Crowson it's only saving grace is its handling, but I wouldn't say it'd run rings round most things, if we're talking regular hatchbacks and saloons then yes but similar hot hatches/coupes from the time will give it a run for its money and lots of more modern stuff will wipe the floor with it. What a lot of cars from that era had (the puma being no exception) was feedback, you could really feel what they were doing and that made them a lot of fun at relatively low speeds. I have driven one, years ago my ex girlfriend had one. I had a 106 GTI at the same time. Handling was pretty even between them but the 106 was notably quicker and the puma just couldn't keep up. What really turns me off with the puma (and other fords of the era) is corrosion, there aren't many left because they became too expensive to look after once rot set in, needing welding for every MOT. Shame really.
Clearly a lot of people haven't driven the puma. It handles superbly and the engine revs very well thanks to Yamaha. Yes cars are quicker and less girly looking also, but this is about the drive and handling ability. The puma is fun!
I just bought a 2006 XR convertible, as an 'emergency' replacement as my car was totalled. I've had it for a couple of days and I quite like it. The soft cover can be down or up in 18 seconds at a press of a button, no catches/ latches etc. The speedo is on the left, and with my usual hand positions, I'm constantly having to shift my head or hands to peek at it. It doesn't have a digital speed display - a feature that I miss. It doesn't have as much oomph as my last car (4.7 L 433 HP) but it's still decent. The steering/ handling is quicker/ lighter and I'm still getting used to it. The soft top creates a big obstruction where the rear far side column would be and I'm having to look at my mirrors more often to compensate for the blind spot. Some nice features for 2006 such as keyless entry, push button ignition, autofolding side mirrors etc. Touch display is very primitive though and you really to press firmly.
Those Pumas are great, wanted to buy one a few years ago, but the rust had taken hold of any one I looked at. It would have turned into a constant weld-paint cycle. But the drive is excellent.
Laguna Coupe, ideally the rare petrol V6 would be a good alternative. There's something of the Aston Martin about its looks. If you replaced all the badges with Aston ones, the car is so rare that I reckon a lot of people would think it was a new small Aston.
i loved and love Puma! i had 2 first serie (1997 and 1999), 1.7 125bhp and 1.4 90bhp... i drove a 1.6 103bhp (2000) twice and this is (as the Puma in the video) the worst. the 1.7 it's the best as km/l (mpg) and faster. in Italy, Pumas are rust free and are cheapest..... but street rules avoided it because EURO 2/3...... Or i would buy it again and again and again! i was looking for "Rally" edition but it's only left drive and again in Italy isn't that good to... :< My impressions: great chassis, even ifitcould be the same of "Fiesta/Ka", very good suspensions and easy to drive and drive fast..... but brakes was shitty xD and body parts are so rare (as second market) or very expensive as brand new......
Alessandro Girotti i had a 1.7 years ago. The engine was developed with yamaha, i believe , and was a willing unit. The cars brakes were poor and it didnt sound that good. I loved the handling though. You could really keep the speed up on a twisty road. I thought it looked great as well. Some obviously disagree on this page but for the money....
I think it would be even more interesting if the actual owners of these cars showed up during the segment, to give share their own car-repair nightmares. That would be very funny. Too bad Fifth gear is dead, though.
Makes me feel good about my 2007 xk that I bought 2 years ago for a hair under $20k US. Had the transmission pan/filter/fluid changed just as recommended here. Mine's bright red and turns heads all the time. No supercharger but I didn't want to shell out an extra 7k for the R
