Howdy Juan, I'm sure you'll do well, as the boss or fella in charge will have you doing most of the grunt work at first, but no real responsibilities will be placed on you until you have learned how to properly, it all takes practice with a love of what your doing, Here's a secret that's not recognized by the average person, look at the physical work as being paid to get in great physical shape. Nice job on the skip! Over here in Arizona they just skip it on but never knock it down looks like a totally different texture when it's the difference of one step. A lot of homes they don't switch there strokes up, just pull from the bottom and work their way up the scaffold. I like your skip, it's much cleaner!
I was just talking about that with a friend! I've been looking at my house and watching these videos to figure out how to match the finish after I fill in a window. On my neighbor's house you can see the lines where they just keep going up. It's like a much thicker version of what Kirk just did here, almost like it was thrown on and walked away from. I'm wondering if I can throw on the scratch and brown coats and when my budget allows call someone out to match the finish or if I should just give it a whirl after some practice.
Howdy Isaac, thank you, with skip trowel finishes, there are about 20 to 30 different common variations, we matched a Taco Bell finish last year where we used the heaviest sand, and just applied it three to four time thicker, "really short and heavy strokes" then simply left it at that, we did not knock down as we match whatever finish folks wish. like anything in the trades It all takes a bit of practice. Cheers, live long and plaster giordano’s plaster images and teaching videos
Howdy Drey Dude, my advice would be to apply the base coat, then give it a shot chances are you won't be able to match what you have, however some folks have odd talents they themselves are not aware of. Beside if you don't like it, you can scrape it off while still not fully cured go on Craigslist and find a plasterer who you can send them a picture of what you have they in turn can shoot you a cost to apply just the finish coat. I do this often where folks e-mail me what they have, I take it from there simply off a picture sent via email, easy peasy lemon squeezy. live long and plaster Giordano’s plastering images and teaching video’s

That's the first time I have seen you do that finish Kirk . And I have always wondered how that was done , thank you as I wanted to give it a go myself .
Howdy ArfaBiscuit Dude, no worries, FYI, to use a base coat cement plaster takes a bit more time in as like in this video, where the wall is perfectly set the mud flows off the trowel like magic, where the basecoat is a bit softer and or not set, a slight touch is required and more edge of the trowel necessary, and lastly where the wall is set or hard the trowel must be applied flatter, more pressure applied or all the mud will fall off as the wall is too dry to accept or better term would be to absorb the finish, Sort of like the old Story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears, it helps to have it justtttt right. live long and plaster Giordano’s rendering plaster images and teaching video’s

Thank you for helping me stucco my shed. You make everything look so easy! Question, after I put my sand float finish, I think I used to much water, in some area It looks like I took some of the color away. It looks pretty spotty, uneven color. It looks like I’m going to have to paint it, so I can get an even color around the whole shed. In your opinion, what Brand/type of paint is the best to use on stucco.
My base coat isn't as smooth and as thick as I need it. Can I apply another layer over it 1/4" thick to bring it closer to my existing wall? Will it adhere properly?
Howdy John, you will need to roll or paint on a bonding agent first. You can purchase a Quikrete bonding agent from any hardware store for this. It's recommended that you clean the wall first as nothing adheres to a dusty or dirty surface. 🧞♂

Hi Kirk, another great video, just wondering have you ever done any Italian polished plaster work ? Some of those finishes are magnificent especially Venetian marble. ...
Howdy Frank, yes I have had more than my share of all the interior finishes such as the veneers with the limestone added and the venetian with the crushed marble, usually if a fella can spread one he or she can spread all as a rule anyway, the only obstacle would be over thinking the differences. Cheers, live long and plaster giordano’s plaster images and teaching videos
kirk. i enjoy watching your videos, especially your method of explaining the logic behind your methods. i felt asking my question to you would get me a quality answer. ....What type of paint would you apply to a basement concrete shower floor and walls i recently took a grinder to the floor and now want to paint. thankyou in case you have time to answer.
Howdy Journey Man dude, thank you If it were me I would install tile instead of painting. Paint will allow a shower pan or wall to gather mold fungus and spores because of the continuous moisture and wet conditions. Place garlic on your foot, wrap with plastic wrap, within an hour you will taste the garlic, same principal, the mold that will live and thrive on the shower pan, thus will seep into your skin transdermally. Dont skip with your health, besides the less time sick with not knowing why is better spent on the two hours or more installing the tiles. Best wishes, kirk giordano plastering

I had to skip trowel a texture over dried stucco. Is this going to create any problems beside just being harder to apply? I noticed the existing stucco would suck all the water out of the texture and crumble easy. I just want to make sure it’s going to stay on. Thanks Kirk
Evening Pat, I would advise a bonding agent if you're not familiar with how difficult this will be. Can it be done, yes, however it takes a lot of practice. A better way to do this is to use a finish coat material, instead of the portland cement plaster or the basecoat Plaster. Bringing peace, love, and harmony back to the world of plastering. Howdy Roger, got to admit that is a cool statement that just seems like white on rice, cool beans daddio, live long and plaster giordano’s plaster images and teaching videos
Evening John, it was curing or drying. However, this second coat was still too new to take on water, as water would have taken or washed the base coat off. As an experienced applicator, these things must be known in advance. Bringing peace, love, and harmony back to the world of plastering. The complete plastering encyclopedia on video, by the plastering messengers of RUclips.
Howdy John, not really but that is a great question that's seams as natural a thing to do as white on rice, however if you wet this wall at this stage the mud will simply wash off "in some areas" thus the texture will be really off as a rule, you start with a wall, finish with a dry wall or have many different textures when it matters, after it painted this will show. Using base coat mud for a skip trowel finish takes a bit of practice as to how to place in on a wet wall VS a dry wall, all in the trowel, on edge or flatter so the mud does not fall off instead we push it onto a dry wall. live long and plaster Giordano’s plastering images and teaching video’s
Howdy Tony, it's easier to lay on a skip trowel finish with a finish material as the sand is the same size, less dropping. If you're really experienced this way works for certain textures. I cant achieve a fine lase finish with this basecoat, but close to it is possible. Peace love and happiness to all Mastering Plastering for the beginner’s to the experts

Hey Kirk, Not only is there debate over skip trowel textures!...But, When stuccoing do I have to or should I only use a magnesium hawk or can I use my 1/2 the price aluminum hawk? I understand the mag. would have more tensile strength but I have been getting away with it. I've dropped 1 thousand $ on tools/equipment lately any advice on multi purpose stuff is greatly appreciated.
Howdy folks, here some links if you wish to purchase any of the stucco tools we use fro our videos off amazon, BTW, these stucco trowels, Hawks, darbies, drills, Bosch bull dogs used for stucco removal plus stucco scoops, dash brushes, green floats, hard rubber floats and a whole lot more plastering and stucco tools are located with a click of the keyboard, get these delivered to your front door and Payless. When buying plastering trowels purchase the ones with a minimum width of 4 1/2 to 5 inches wide, these help to move plaster where you want it, any trowels between 3 to 4 inches wide are o.k. for concrete work but not recommended for a plasterer. The hawks we use are a bit more in cost as they are Magnesium and large 14x14, they hold much more stucco or plaster thus less spilling, you can buy cheaper hawks made from Aluminum but they tend warp a bit easier. Hey Kirk, thanks for the extended rundown of materials. It's a great help to me knowig I'm on thr right track (I have been following your vids closely) I am probably going to place an order from Bon directly, Now another question. If I recall correctly using a standard 1-1/2 nap roller on plaster will give an oragne peel finish which would do well for my 80+ year old home...does an orange peel finish help to hide imperfections? They way past "contractors/fix'itmen" did some of the work for the part owners is quite wonky. Any help fully appreciated. Hey, kirk! I'm being asked to match a skip trowel finish on some work that someone else already stuccoed and floated. So it's dry. Can I get it to stick by just spraying or painting with bonding agent first?
Howdy 90s dude, the cement plaster we applied is regular portland cement plaster with the same mix ratio as the scratch coat and brown coat, 3 parts sand to one part cement plaster, It appears to apply well as Jason is an expert at adding or subtracting water in the mix, us plasterers are a team, without a expert man mixing the team losing all games, but when in harmony unstoppable. Cheers, live long and plaster giordano’s plaster images and teaching videos
Evening Esteban, if the wall is porous such as the one in this video and just applied, you can texture over with no bonding agent or extra moister or water. If a wall is painted, yes, a bonding agent is necessary. If this wall were set for say, a day, yes, it would be necessary to hydrate or hose it down, so the texture would adhere. Howdy Hose Dude, I have no clue as I have never been in a hurricane but would love the opportunity as I love nature at it's worst. I will say judging from hotels I have seen on island where hurricanes are common, concrete is the way to go. Live long and plaster stucco images and teaching videos
Ah Kirk you would love being at the Outer Banks, North Carolina during hurricane season. I have been there for two and for one my wife and I climbed this wooden tower structure that is part of a restaurant overlooking the beach, this after we were kindly asked to leave the beach for our own safety. This particular experience was just the outer band of what we east coasters call a mild one, as far as hurricanes go:). Added note the tower did have lightning rods attached to it so it was so much more of an awesome experience of natures powers than a reckless thing to do. Re; Hose Armando, on the east coast the great majority of all houses made more than 40-50 years ago, like my rowhome or town house to be fancy, were built with brick then lathed and plastered, all the tall buildings in Baltimore built before the mid to late 1950s were made of cement and there are even some buildings near the waterfront and elsewhere made of brick and mortar from as far back as the U.S. civil war...you can google Baltimore city Shot Tower (or the Domino Sugar building for some examples. The Shot Tower is oddly shaped but aptly named such because during 1860s mass produced lead shot or bullets were cast from lead near the top and then let fall to stay formed in rounded shape for use in the rifles of the day...such as the Springfield model 1861 which was a musket type or rifled musket . The US Civil war era Springfield Armory building still stands strong and firm till this day. I have a friend from Springfield Mass. and had the chance to visit the site a few years back. Basically the building methods have changed due to cost , return on investment. I believe there are 5 grade/type of materials used) for modern structures that is a somewhat architectural standard dependent on area of US so it is mostly, nearly entirely due to economic factors as for why most homes made over last 30 years or more are made of wood frame, plywood sided and papered. There are some homes that have a brick veneer so non load bearing and much less expensive. In addition in the Outer Banks, due to the yearly hurricane season, homes are made of wood with many standing on wooden stilts. These homes were expected to take storm damage each year but there are some the have stood strong for a hundred years, those are easy to tell how well built they are as they were made for the wealthy and are the really large homes closest to the waterfront. All newer homes there, even the pink three story monsters that look all out of place to me are made of wood still but of cheaper materials with long board and even vinyl siding. Wow, I just built a wall of text but history in general is kind of my thing and I tend to get excited to share when folks ask about things I know a bit about. Peace fellas

You the man. Broke out my stucco and getting a new, very fancy 80x120 patio door installed Friday. Got a quote to scratch/brown - finish it for $600. I appreciate the skill involved (art) and costs these days but shoot, too much for me. Was gonna attempt the rapid set base + finish with the base material. Sounds too risky with the timing of rapid set so will grab color (finish coat) bag. If it ends up looking like crap - wood trim around the door. Need to learn the hard way as I might do all my windows at one point. Going to attempt the rapiset and la habra from HD. You. theman Kurt. Will let you know if I can live with the patch or not haha
HD sells "Set Control" by Rapid Set, which can extend the working time of their Rapid Set stucco patch. Look into it. On a few occasions I've used 1 packet per 50 lb bag of stucco patch and it gives me 30-40 mins of working time. Doing the work on a cool day in the shade will also help. You can do it the way you mentioned but the Rapid set stucco patch can be applied like a 1/8" thick finish coat and looks nearly identical to a La Habra 16-20 color coat when sponge floated. It's expensive for the coverage you get but very good stuff for patch work. Lastly you're 100% right, Kirk is the man! Hope your project comes out well.
@@BigB2316SB Thank you Big B, Westside sells the daddy product of "Rapid set stucco." Eisenwall- stucco it's the same stuff, just on steroids. With each bag sold. They also hand out two bags of the retardant. Both hydraulic stuccos are made by Rapid Set. I've been a certified applicator for about 15 years now. No great achievement, I'm just talking. Cheers, my fellow plasterer.
@@BigB2316SBThanks for the input! I'll consider the stucco patch you listed. My house has a thick skip trowel finish, so will do the base and practice skip trowel on my board before trying it on my wall. One thing I noticed when doing the breakout was that the finish coat on my wall didn't seem well "bonded" to the base coat. Like you can pull the finish coat in large "flakes". Idk maybe that's normal but would have thought the finish coat is almost fused to the base coat.
@@francoisl7663 Building a practice wall before tackling the real thing is a great idea! I suggested the rapid set stucco patch (red bag/box) as it's a product that you can easily use as a base and a finish coat. The set control would help give you a similar working time to La Habra color coat. It's fairly sticky like a color coat too and you may find it easier to work with. As long as the skip trowel was done with a coarse sand (16-20) you should be able to make the stucco patch product blend. If you used a product like the rapid set stucco mix (yellow bag), which is meant to be used as a base coat or a scratch + brown, you may find it more difficult to work with for skip trowel. Trying to skip trowel with a base product isn't easy. Kirk is a master and makes things look easier than they are. It's going to take you some practice but you seem determined. As for the color coat flaking. I see that often around areas with prolonged moisture exposure. It can also be application issues. It should be fairly bonded under normal circumstances. For full disclosure, I'm just starting out in this trade doing small patches. I'm still learning myself. Looking forward to hearing how things turn out for you.
Hello Kirk, you are the best plasterer on the planet. Love watching your vid's. May I ask, is this the same as knock down plaster finish. Looks the same but done in a different way. Also, what type of sand do you use? Is it a bricklayers sand with clay in it or is it a completely washed sand? What is the ratio of sand to Portland cement? BTW, I'm Anne's husband Tony. Hope you can help me out with my questions. :) Do you have an email address I could use to send you a few more questions?
Howdy Tony dude, Ann's husband, a knockdown dash is a thrown on or blown of stucco finish with a trowel lightly knocking down the high points, thus knock down dash, the finish in this video is a light skip trowel texture using the base coat cement plaster, to an average person they may appear similar, however a plasterer can easily see the difference. My average ratio of sand to cement plaster is 3 parts sand to one part cement plaster. Lastly, if you have a few more question ask here as other folks may have a similar question. BTW, if you type in individually questions such as what's the ratio of sand to cement plaster a video will appear with the answer more in depth in a video made specifically to answer that question. Live long and plaster Sharing Plastering tips by the Giordano Gents
Thanks Kirk, is the sand washed or is it bricklayers sand with some clay in it? BTW, I found an email address for you and sent you a few more Q's. Hope you can answer those Q's as they are very important to us. The greatest importance is the Fiberboard Q regarding the preparation for cement render. Do you use Fiberboard exterior cladding in the States? Over here, we also use a product called Blue board. Thanks dude, truly appreciate your help ;)
Howdy Ann, I prefer the washed sand such as Felton or Olimpia myself. In our area most attach plywood or OSB wood to the studs as a cladding, I have not seen fiberboard used here. I would advise plywood sheathing for your exterior if you can afford it. We do indeed have a product called blue board gypsum based sheetrock here that is made specifically for interior use, the blue layer of coating is for veneer plaster to adhere to it, this board is not intended for exterior use.
Howdy Isaac, thank you,
with skip trowel finishes, there are about 20 to 30 different common variations, we matched a Taco Bell finish last year where we used the heaviest sand, and just applied it three to four time thicker, "really short and heavy strokes" then simply left it at that, we did not knock down as we match whatever finish folks wish.
like anything in the trades It all takes a bit of practice.
Cheers, live long and plaster

Howdy Drey Dude, my advice would be to apply the base coat, then give it a shot chances are you won't be able to match what you have, however some folks have odd talents they themselves are not aware of.
Beside if you don't like it, you can scrape it off while still not fully cured go on Craigslist and find a plasterer who you can send them a picture of what you have they in turn can shoot you a cost to apply just the finish coat.
I do this often where folks e-mail me what they have, I take it from there simply off a picture sent via email, easy peasy lemon squeezy.

That's the first time I have seen you do that finish Kirk . And I have always wondered how that was done , thank you as I wanted to give it a go myself .
Howdy ArfaBiscuit Dude, no worries,
FYI, to use a base coat cement plaster takes a bit more time in as like in this video, where the wall is perfectly set the mud flows off the trowel like magic, where the basecoat is a bit softer and or not set, a slight touch is required and more edge of the trowel necessary, and lastly where the wall is set or hard the trowel must be applied flatter, more pressure applied or all the mud will fall off as the wall is too dry to accept or better term would be to absorb the finish,
Sort of like the old Story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears, it helps to have it justtttt right.

What mud are you using? Does it have cement?
Just regular Portland cement with three times the sand add for every one part of stucco.
kirk. i enjoy watching your videos, especially your method of explaining the logic behind your methods. i felt asking my question to you would get me a quality answer. ....What type of paint would you apply to a basement concrete shower floor and walls
i recently took a grinder to the floor and now want to paint. thankyou in case you have time to answer.
Howdy Journey Man dude, thank you
If it were me I would install tile instead of painting.
Best wishes,

Could you mist the wall if it had dried out too much?
Howdy John, not really but that is a great question that's seams as natural a thing to do as white on rice,
however if you wet this wall at this stage the mud will simply wash off
"in some areas" thus the texture will be really off as a rule, you start with a wall, finish with a dry wall or have many different textures when it matters, after it painted this will show.
Using base coat mud for a skip trowel finish takes a bit of practice as to how to place in on a wet wall VS a dry wall, all in the trowel, on edge or flatter so the mud does not fall off instead we push it onto a dry wall.

Can i use bts stucco before the skip trowel finish? Or would I use a 3rd layer of regular “cement” or “mud”? In need of help please thank you.
Howdy Tony, it's easier to lay on a skip trowel finish with a finish material as the sand is the same size, less dropping.
If you're really experienced this way works for certain textures. I cant achieve a fine lase finish with this basecoat, but close to it is possible.

They way past "contractors/fix'itmen" did some of the work for the part owners is quite wonky. Any help fully appreciated. Also, do you use stipple brushes or some of the other specialty tools includig texture brushes...guess that could be a whole vid in itself I suppose:) No pressure my man!

I seal a wall with bonding agent to do texture do I need to wet wall or I do texture as it is? Thanks Kirk.

Liberty First he said yo prep with a pressure washer then use weld Crete bonding agent sounds legit. I always wire the entire house before I plaster but its a lot of work
Howdy Thomas, it's not only a lot of work, but in my opinion destroys the integrity and or longevity, plus no way to waterproof the home where the nails attach the wire, as you can apply paper over stucco.

Can base coat be tinted like a color coat?
Yes
Can but it won’t end up the same color as color coat with same amount of color added. So tinted like a color coat, no. Can it be tinted in someway, sure.
hey i have a question for you..i am move recentry from europe(greece) to us and i was wondering, why you build house from wood, and not brik cement or concrite.and what is the best matiriar to have aroound your house in us..like wooden side or stucco sides or brik sides?
Howdy Hose, as a rule most countries build with what is the most abundant and natural material that they have,
In the US we have lots of tree's or used to.
in some countries they have the no how to create cinderblocks and or concrete, thus these are used and so on.

one more pleaze.so if it was your house to hit from tornado not f5 lets say f3 or close to there what is the material that will take the less damage..like what is the best to protect yourself!
Howdy Hose Dude, I have no clue as I have never been in a hurricane but would love the opportunity as I love nature at it's worst.
I will say judging from hotels I have seen on island where hurricanes are common, concrete is the way to go.

Howdy Armando, sound scary but exciting at the same time.

You can't just wet the wall down if it dries?
Good afternoon Dan, we can but just a tiny bit as the water can bring the stucco back to life if wet too soon plus now the texture will be very different, plus we could get the dreaded wash off.
All these issues are a real threat. to the finished product.

Howdy Francois, this is what we do for a living, everything takes practice. No doubt I can't do what you do for a living either, Cheers.

If is dry why don't you mist it with water?
Howdy Gods' helper, it wasn't that dry as I just applied it, If I would have wet or hydrated this wall, the stucco would have come down.
I can look at the color to understand when it's dry enough to mist, as a rule.

Less sand in texture mud for a dry wall
there's no sand in gypsum, perhaps silica.
Is this done with cement mortar?
Aloha cupid, yes it's repaired with cement plaster, we added our own sand usually 3 parts sand to one part cement plaster.
If you don't want to go through purchasing sand and cement plaster, you can buy the rapid set stucco at Lowes and or Home Depot, you just add water to that stuff.
Peace love and happiness to all.

I see in alot of your videos you tell people to use Portland. Isn't type s better it's essentially Portland an lime. But it a strong masonry cement. I'm a stone Mason. Do some stucco here in there. Just curious
I could be wrong but I think your lime will leach and give you efflorescence. I use portland and Synlime helps with the texturing.
