The video appreciated, I would use the word chiaroscuro for more dramatic lighting than in the example of 3 minutes in. Chiaroscuro is the contraction of two words: "chiaro" and "oscuro" - clear and obscure: bright and dark. It is characterized by "three-dimensional volume that is suggested by gradation of color and the analytical division of light and shadow shapes". The girl at almost 6 minutes in is a more typical example as you have obvious light and shadow shapes.
Yes, Pye, I see your points, but just warn against inflation of the "chiaroscuro" predicate or quality.
If there is not enough dark in the image and not enough contrast, avoid the term. Light and dark needs to have dark to justify us calling it that.
    Nice video and shots.

This is huge, Pye... I've been buying second hand art history books and seeing what the old masters were doing with their portraits. Big fan of your videos bro keep em coming.

My guy Pye, I can’t wait to get into learning editing after I finish mastering my craft through the lens. Love this stuff

Grrrrrrrrrr!!! Want to hate Bye so much, he is so nonchalant about being such a good photographer!
Joking aside, these tutorials are very well done, and Pye makes great results seem attainable by all of us.
    Thanks Pye!

Chiaroscuro was first made famous by Michelangelo Merisi " Dé Caravagio "

I use a similar process on portraits. I add a vignette with 100% feather and erase it off the subject. That leaves a darker background with a little lighter area behind the subject. It works well, and the vignette isn't noticeable unless the viewer is really good at editing.

Thank you. Would you ne kind enough to explain in the future why a Bruegel painting with many complex elements looks interesting, but a photograph with that complexity looks like a messy snapshot. Thank you.

Interesting... I don't use Lightroom, but I can still use the principles. This would be much harder for taking someone who is black, however.
