This is my Telemark challenge for the season, going back in time with set ups from four different eras.
We will go from the 80s super long skis to today's wide boards.
Telemark skiing has evolved so much and I've kept updating my gear all along.
I want to go back in time and see the advantages we might have lost along the way, or the benefits I get from the modern set ups we enjoy today.
For the 80s set up, we have the Atomic 210 cm ski, with a lot of camber, mounted with the Chili telemark binding from Rottofella. Then, I found my original telemark skis and binding. It is the Karhu Hardbody 203 cm mounted with Rottofella 412, a front-loading telemark binding. I will ride both skis with a Vasque leather boot.
For 90s setup, I have the X-scream from Salomon, a parabolic ski, with the very popular Voile release plate. I also have the Rossignol Big Bang, mounted on the Rainey SuperLoop telemark binding. This ski/binding combo is mine and I have skied it 5-6-7 years, can't remember. I will ride the Garmon Veloce with these skis.
For the 2000 setup, I have found the Karhu Kodiak, mounted on the 22designs Hammerhead. This is a short ski for me, but it should edge and carve very well. Not in the video, I will also add a Black Diamond AMP ski mounted on a Black Diamond O1 telemark binding. This is a fat ski, very good for powder. I feel that this is the era where people started to buy more than one set up, and choose according to conditions. I will ride both skis with the super-powerful Crispi XR boot.
For the 2010 to today setups are all NTN based setup. We have the Black Diamond Route 88 mounted on the Bishop BMF-R telemark binding. This is my day-to-day patrol ski. I also chose the Helio 105 from Black Diamond mounted with the Lynx, 22Designs latest telemark binding. This is my setup for backcountry telemark and the one I use telemarking in the Chic-Chocs. I might also show you a few other setups I have that are different for that era, plus a surprise. I will ride those with the Crispi Evo WC telemark boot check out the full series for more fun on the telemark history gear review. Спорт
Golden oldies.
I learned on NNN BC, Karhu Kodiaks and plastic-braced leather Alpinas!
I go back to the leather boot/double camber ski every one in a while, and every time I do I question why I stuck with freeheel skiing. The leather boot and repurposed alpine ski with the SuperLoop combo is where the fun began.
I remember skiing some of those skis! Wouldn’t go back ! 😜
J'adore cette idée de retour dans le temps...un concept à la fois amusant et intéressant! Hâte de voir les démos!
Kathy Noël merci
Good attitude; have fun !
This is great. Thank you!
I love the concept here! Great idea to try the old gear alongside the new. I look forward to hearing some results!
Thanks a lot for the comment, I'm very exited too!
Great idea to test télémark through the years from 80s to nowadays. Would love to try it again for fun and souvenirs... I started Tele with fisher e99 and nnn bc binding. ! I still have this stuff at home, but didn't have ski it since 20 years sure !
Thanks Domi
Really excited for the Lynx review and Meidjo comparison!
Will do.
Thank you for the video. I’m on my second year of telemark skiing and looking to learn as much as possible. Having a little trouble seeing the equipment on my little TV though.
I'll details the equipment fully in the following videos
Rene,
I have been on Rainy Superloops with a Voile release kit and T1 boot. I love the set up. Every year I look to replace the binding and I can’t find anything as safe simple and light. I think the sport went complex and technical and moved in the wrong direction for bindings. I only ski resort downhill. I don’t want to be like the commenter caught an edge blew out a knee.
Telemark is all about the joy of the turn. If it ain't broken, don't fix it.
hammerhead review, please!
Where can I find the videos? These series sounds very very interesting!
Je veux pas faire mon péquiste, peux tu faire tes videos en francais aussi? Tant qu’a ecouter un franco parler anglais. 🤣🤣🤣
Super chaine par contre! Me donne envi d’essayer le telemark 🤙
I'm really curious about the 80' staff in particular.
Please go on
Michele Manfredi thanks for the support
Merci beaucoup.
Is that basketball hoop standard Canadian height? No wonder you guys are much more competitive at hockey 😉
I had those Hardbody's and 412's! Changed to the Superloops.
Nick Pittson same as me
Are the leather boots Asolo Extremes?
Very curious about the BMF-R ... in 75mm (for now).
Been a die-hard 22-Designs Axl user since foreever (and Hammer Heads before that).
Sounds like the performance is about the same as the Axl more or less, perhaps less adjustability (pivot point), a bit heavier, and much more convenient (step in and brakes).
Any hands on experience out there? Is the weight difference of any consequence?
Eric Raymond I don’t know about the weight but I really liked to tour mode on the BMF and the step in. The power is NO problem at all even without the lack of pivot point adjustments.
@@Absolutetelemark Thanks. I love the tour mode on the Axl as well.
I am looking for a binding that does both free heel and lock in so that I can telemark or switch over to more traditional downhill. Does this exist? What would you recommend? Thanks for this video!
Hello Mischa. It does, look at the Meidjo 3.0 + alpine heelset. The-m-equipment.com
Been using that for a few years now.
Make sure your boots are compatible
@@Absolutetelemark awesome i'll take a look. thank you!
What can someone recommend for a step in tele-binding?
See my review on the Bishop BMF. I think it's the best step in on the market. ruclips.net/video/_ZxnCw8UNqE/видео.html&ab_channel=absolutetelemark
What happened to the Meidjo? No longer using?
Yes, I'm still using it. I will compared the Meidjo to the Lynx and I need more time on the Lynx.
@@Absolutetelemark Good to hear I have meidjos on both pairs of my skis but don't know anyone else with them, so never can compare thoughts. Very happy with them, however one pair occassionally fails to engage the boot heel.
I love my BMFs but I just blew me knees out catching an edge on a groomer... gonna switch to something with release once I heal. Hit me up if you want a set of BMF3 for 75mm..
mangler1055 sorry to hear that.
It’s cool man. They’re incredible bindings. It was a freak accident. I’ve been hard charging on tele for 15 years now and never had a wipeout like that.
pinetop12@msn.com If you still have the Bishops for sale. Have the same pair but always looking for a backup.
Wayne Perkins just sold them the other night, thanks for asking. I have a pair of 2019 T1s if you’re in the market. They’re essentially brand new.
@@mangler1055 Sure. I may have an interest. I use a size 29.5 mondo (Scarpa T Race 2015 ) Thanks for responding.
Go to the resort with the oldest skis
will do for sure!
And boots. Thanks :-)
