    I am helplessly and happily committed to playing the violin. I am not pressuring myself, if I don't feel like playing or practicing I give myself a break. I feel like if me playing is going to be a chore then I will not play. I am so committed though I will play often and a lot. I love the violin and it is wonderful to be playing on a violin that once belonged to my Papa Thorson, my mother's father. My grandfather also played the accordion but I didn't get that one.

    Thank you for your great videos. I like your english, too.
    When I started Violin at 27 years old, I didn't have enough money for Lessons and had to rely on videos, a book for adult learners, and my experience as a pianist. I knew I had to think in baby steps and therefore practiced often (nearly every day), but not very long (10 to 20 minutes). The consistency really worked well for me and anyone can make time for 10 minutes each day (*hint* practice mute). After 1 year I had the money to get lessons and was afraid.. would the teacher tell me to buy a better instrument? I only had a 100€ set (violin, bow, Case, rosin etc) with 40€ strings (Made an incredible difference in sound) and a better bow (100€, with authentic hair and made out of wood). My teacher had no problem at all with my low quality instrument. Other teachers and instrument retailer weren't nice at all about the instrument. My teacher corrected a few issues I had, but overall the posture was alright and I didn't need to start from the very basics again, which was my second fear. But the best about my teacher is: she challenges me. While self-teaching, I only made tiny advances in difficulty, afraid of doing something wrong and later having to relearn it. Now I get so many different etudes etc to practice and if I develop some strange habit, my teacher corrects that every other week. This way, I learned much faster in 6 months with lessons than I did in 1 year without. Tl;dr - get lessons, even If it's just one hour per month.

    Ah, yeah. Right in my wheelhouse. I am 57 years old, have played lead guitar all my life, 8 months in on the violin. I live in a rural resort town with no violin teachers around and the fiddle players I know aren't going to be interested in helping an old guy learn to walk so to speak. So thank you for your instruction. Posture: I like to sit on the bed against the headboard feel straight out and watch TV while I practice my electric unplugged violin. The only problem I have is banging the bow tip on the headboard sometimes. :-) My dog likes to lie on the bed and listen to me try to play well. Man's best friend for sure!

    It's also good to listen to what the instrument wants. My viola doesn't want to have anything attached to it, and it wants to sit close to the middle instead of off to the side and be more horizontal. And I agree with it. Everything becomes easier when I let it settle where it wants to be, and play it how it wants to be played.

      It's crazy how fast you can pick up a song with a mandolin, then shift and experiment with moving and repeating stuff. The muscle memory translates extremely well to the violin, so much so that I agree with others that a mandolin is a must-have training tool for violins.

    I watch many professionals playing and saw them often move the violin to the bow, but never really thought about „a“ or „the“ reason. I watched this video yesterday and tried out move the violin to the bow when i come near to the frog and it is so much easier (especially in third position).
    I practice for a better 3rd position playing „arvo pärt- Spiegel im spiegel“ of course it will need so much more time to let sound it good, but that tip brought it already to a next level 🥰

You are sooo right that violin is NOT easy to learn or play and I have a NEW respect for violin/string players! I haven't played 50 hours yet and I'm already playing ALL the 12 major scales and a number of songs! I'm doing the scales better than the songs but I'm getting there. I will soon be playing all the minor scales too. One thing that distresses me though is vibrato... UGH! I know I MUST learn to do that well to play beautifully.

Do not worry for not having mastered vibrato fully yet. It is totally worth to spend quality time on vibrato practising without time pressure, as this will open many doors for you. A healthy vibrato requires a great control and relaxation on the left hand which is necessary basics of many difficult advanced LH techniques. You can do it Ellen! Happy practising!

    Joy, that first tip about moving, and even moving the violin when it is convenient, is pretty wild. I like it though, and am going to try it. Having grown up self-teaching (except for class lessons in school) on piano and three wind instruments, one which took me to study in Vienna and I planned on entering an international competition in Geneva, the top competition in the world then on my instrument, until I changed career objectives out of music. This was all long, long ago.
    Ironically, as a kid I self taught on a piece of junk $3 violin when for a few months, played using arm vibrato from day one (vibrato was tight and fast), but quit and later tried violin in college, and took some lessons with a friend who was a student of Albert Markov, and one semester in college from a Juilliard graduate, a professor at the college, and then I quit, totally discouraged that I wasn't able to play the violin literature which I know quite well as I played it all on the flute. It was with both those teachers that I learned a bad habit that caused me pain and expense later on when I would try violin again as an old man, and that habit was using a shoulder rest. I could only play for like 20 minutes a day, it bothered my back and neck so much, and I tried four different shoulder rests, so it was expensive for me also.
    I saw a video online by Nathan Cole about how to play without a shoulder rest, and you probably know the Heifetz reply to a student who said they couldn't play without a shoulder rest -- "take up cello." Anyway, my neck is long and I had this idea that I couldn't play without one, but read that some people can. I was shocked at how natural it was for me, and more importantly, how painless! I have to put a little something over my collar bone where the violin sits if I'm not wearing a thick shirt, and that's it.
    My second favorite tip I learned from a free lesson online from William Fitzpatrick, to relax the left hand by not pressing the string all the way down so it touches the fingerboard when playing a note. Play all notes like that. He learned this as a student at Juilliard. He goes on and on telling stories about this, and of course he mentions all it can do for your playing, like faster technique, and for me anyway, much better vibrato because my hand is relaxed enough for the joints to do the proper movement. I think this tip would help beginners lose the tense death grip they tend to have in the left hand. Also, on the subject of vibrato, arm vibrato was natural but I learned wrist vibrato also and can use either or a mixture. One tip you mentioned, was in my first lesson with my friend, using full bow. Without using a full bow in most of your playing in the first two years, you will never reach the stage where bowing is natural. Pinchas Zuckerman said something to that effect. So it's about sound, but also very much about learning how to bow. You're totally right that anyone self-teaching, unless they know to make themselves use full bow, will use about a foot in the center of their bow and that's it.
    In conclusion, violin is soooo unnatural and I'm sure a few lessons with the right teacher can go a long way for many students who are teaching themselves, but those two tips were so important for me, and I don't think 90% of teachers would teach either of those things. So kids, or adults, watch about a million videos online, including all of Joy's videos, and you too may learn something that can change your whole experience of playing the violin and open up new possibilities for enjoying the instrument.

    Than you maam,which book I follow after Suzuki violin volume 10 ?

    • @JoyLeeViolin
      @JoyLeeViolin  2 года назад +1

      Dear Richard, after the last book of any methods, either Suzuki or other books, one would work on individual scale books, etude books and concerto, sonata , show pieces. For example after Suzuki 10, one could work on all numbers/keys of Carl Flesch scale book, Rode Caprices as etude book and Bach Solo Sonatas and Mendelssohn/Tchaikovsky violin concerto pieces. There are much more pieces, but I hope this gave you an idea. Happy practising!

    Thank you so much for the info! So far I am using RUclips for my information source but hope to get an in-person instructor when I have time. Do you know why some people twist the bow back and forth as they play?

    • @JoyLeeViolin
      @JoyLeeViolin  6 лет назад +3

      We tilt ( twist) the bow to change the weight and the amount of bow hair which will result different dynamics and tome colour. The more hair, the louder it is. I hope this answers your question.

      For an adult, a full size violin (4/4) is better, but 3/4 size can work too for people with small hands. Happy playing!

    Thank you very much, dear Joy, very helpful tips, bless your heart, one question though, as regards to maintaining the violin in a good and healthy shape, do you loosen the strings after you are done for the day and let the strings loosen up over night or do you keep them in tune all the time? Thank you 🙏

    • @JoyLeeViolin
      @JoyLeeViolin  4 года назад +2

      You're most welcome Totoo. You don't need to loosen the strings after playing. However you do need to loosen the bow hair as this will affect on the condition of your bow. Happy violin playing!

    Hi Joy! Happy New Year. Would you please do a video on deciding when to use the tip of the bow instead of the middle of the bow. Many times this is not marked, but the tone and colour can be dramatically altered by a sudden shift to 3rd position and the tip of the bow strokes. I just wonder if there are certain tones one may be trying to produce that the tip of the bow is really a must...ie: pianissimo

    • @JoyLeeViolin

      it's normal for the bow hair to be worn and to get a bit dark. As long as the bow hair produces decent sound, it should be ok. Happy playing!
