Fixing up a Facebook Marketplace trailer for my homemade houseboat (Boat Build Series #10)

  • This week on the boat build we're tackling the trailer (which I will need to flip my boat onto, once I finish building the hull). As I get closer to building the house part of this houseboat, it's going to need somewhere to live and I'm hoping this $300 boat trailer from Facebook Marketplace will do the trick.

About me: I decided to jump on an opportunity to buy a school bus for $1000. After 2.5 years of building and a couple summers doing bus life, I sold the bus and began building a tiny house boat from scratch. My hope is that with a couple years of practice building under my belt, I can do a bit better of a job this time and build something that actually floats 🤞

I work with grinders a lot. They can be surprisingly dangerous. It is good that you are using the auxiliary handle and two hands. PPE . Protect your ears with both plugs and muffs. Protect your eyes with safety glasses and your face with a shield ,both. I have had grit fly around glasses and get into my eye. Thickish gloves to limit the vibration your hands suffer. And loose the baggy shirt. A close fitting thick shirt or two. If it is loose and the grinder grabs it ,things get unpleasant faster than you can let go of the trigger. Thick to defend against flying debris . I can’t count how many times I have pulled wire brush wires out of my body. Very useful tool that demands respect. Keep up the adventure.

It was so satisfying to watch you transform the trailer! I hope you talked to your brother on the clearance issue (boat and fender). I was thinking a half inch wasn’t enough. And, I hope you guys came up with a way to build the rails where the boat will ride.
You are doing a great job!

The trailer is looking good Emma, and you are making good progress on it. You are doing the best thing by installing new lights and running new wires, that should cut down on issues when you hook the trailer to your truck.

I have to agree, the white only was very nice. Not crazy about the almond. But painting white on white is a challenge. You need to get a thing of tint for your primer if you ever choose to do that, so you can see a little contrast when you put your top coat on.

Time to take up welding. You can weld some uprights to fill in the gap between the hull and the trailer. That attach some 2x6 that the boat will slide on.

You may need a holesaw to install those lights. But it'd be cheaper n easier to get an LED trailer light kit from Harbour Freight that will screw or rivet into the holes that are already there. At worst you may have to drill one hole per light or use self drilling screws.

Yes correct arbor size is critical. Wrong size can crush disk etc causing it to explode. Good job using handle and using rest of your arm too. Use light pressure and let the tool do the work keep the cutting disk at the same angle when using.

I used to work for Magic Tilt Trailers in Louisiana and they do make a 12” adjustable bunk bracket for the trailer if you go the adjustable route make sure you get all the hardware from each bracket and also make sure you measure the cross member it’s looks like a 4” cross section you measure from the top to the bottom.

3:16 You reminded me of my years of using naval jelly (no, not something you put on naval toast). I don't know if you can still get it in it's original unforgiving strength but whatever you put it on, metal, it stripped it right down to bare metal. Pretty much no matter what was in the way, paint, coatings, Godzilla, didn't matter. 8:42 That sticker? Gone.

On those rails for supporting the boat. Yes you can bolt a few planks together. To change the angle to match your hull's bottom angle, you can bevel the support filler boards. I would bevel a short bottom piece for above each support.**** Maybe 3 times the length of the top of the support. Then use a longer and longer ones to build up to the height needed for your carpeted support rails. The reason I'm using longer and longer ones is to counter twisting fore/aft of the support structure.
**** You can make a long plank and bevel it all at once, then cut it into pieces for each support.
For the support boards and rails, I'd use direct burial/foundation grade pressure treated wood, and stain with a fence type stain. They won't be constantly submerged in water, so they can dry out. The fence stain will shed most water and allow the wood to breath to get rid of moisture that gets in it.
On fiber-glassing: RAN Sailing youtube channel is going through building a 50' sailboat build. They talk some on the need to round corners for fiberglass layup. Also they have a few videos on laying up the fiberglass on their hull. They found wetting out the fiberglass on a table, then rolling it up, and finally unrolling it on the hull worked best for them. Proper fiberglass rollers are vital for wetting out, and bubble removal. Boat supply places likely will stock them. They can be cleaned and stored in acetone. Warning, acetone is highly volatile and flammable. So store and use outside.

Great start to the trailer Emma. Prep work is always the worst! Do a couple thick coats of paint and then a couple coats of UV resistant clear coat and she'll be good till the welds fail lol do your research on primer/paint/antifoul bottom finish when you finally get the hull prepped. several sailing channels on here with others doing DIY. Sailing Catalpa is great, they're in dry dock doing their annual bootwork now. They use TotalBoat brand of epoxy for their bottom and topside finish. Good luck! Happy Easter!

You are gonna need metal or heavy wooden adapter plates made to mount the bunks on that trailer. It was originally welded up for a semi-deep V bottom bass boat
Look at your template, and where the waterline of the boat is going to be. Thats how far under water the trailer has to be to launch and retrieve the boat. Have a second truck stand by when you go to launch, to prevent you from sinking your little truck or help pull you and the boat out.
Cant tell from the pics, but it looks like you have bearing buddies, if not, have them installed.

Too late for this but for the future. There is stuff all rust converter/conversion, that you apply to rust and it turns the rust into another form of Iron. It works on surface rust so once you wire wheel off the cake up rust just apply the rust conversion once that drys it is ready for paint.
