WTF Happened to My Secret Identity? (1988-91):

- If you grew up in Canada during the 1980s and 90s, you remember a channel called YTV. Earlier on Gone But Not Forgotten, we dug into a staple of YTV, You Can’t Do That on Television, which became our biggest episode ever. This week, we look at another show that was played to death on YTV, the superhero teen comedy My Secret Identity, starring a young Jerry O’Connell. The show ran for three seasons (1988-1991) and has a strong cult following to this day.
In this special episode of Gone But Not Forgotten, we look back at the show with a little help from special guests Brian Levant and Fred Fox Jr, who created the show. While the budget was impossibly low, Canadian kids loved this stet-natured comedy. It helped make Jerry O’Connell a star, as eventually, it began airing in the U.S too in syndication. O’Connell starred as a teen named Andrew Clements, who gets hit by a ray in a school lab accident and develops superpowers that enable him to fly with the help of a couple of aerosol cans. He’s helped by his mentor, Dr. Benjamin Jeffcoate, played by Canadian character actor Derek McGrath, who also has a crush on Andrew’s mom, played by Wanda Cannon.
Eventually, the show ended, but O’Connell went on to significant stardom in the U.S. In this episode, we take an affectionate look back at a show that - while a bit cheesy - is a fun piece of late eighties nostalgia.

Small wonder is another good one.
now if Only i Could Find This on DVD' and NOT Taped off TV Either...
i was humming the season 1 intro earlier today, and had to RUclips it. 2 hours later this video is suggested in my feed. coincidence, i think not. Synchronicity.
Jerry O'Connell became physically taller and fitter during this shows run. The next time i saw him after series end was on Sliders. Which was an awesome show...Until the intoduction of the Kromags as regular antagonist, Quinn's true background being revealed and what happened to Wade, which gutted me. The show went down hill after that. I only continued watching the show for The Crying Man and Maggie.
@@mrrictus - did you Know That There were 5 Seasons of Sliders ???
@PrivateOGITH I bought the whole series DVD from someone online about 15 years ago but they were all recorded from TV. Quality was ok buy not great. Not all of them are on RUclips
Oh. My. God. I loved this show! I watched it every Sunday morning, growing up in Canada. No one I talk to ever seems to remember it 😅
Don't worry. Me and my sister remember!! We got your back. We used to watch Sunday afternoon in California😁
The name is vague but familiar. I don't remember it tho. But Sunday mornings we were in church so I probably missed it
*Sighhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh* @@JohnGalt916
@@youknowwhoyouare2269 😂
In my mind, I confused it with The New Adventures of Beans Baxter.
As a 9-10 year old, I watched this every Saturday afternoon, followed by Captain Power. Man those were the days. Jerry O'Connell was so relatable as a character and I identified with him on so many levels. I still have that theme song stuck in my head and it's been 34 years.
This show was the main reason I watched 'Sliders' years later. =)
Captain Power?!! damn that brought back some good memories.
Dude. I loved this show SO SO much!! Nobody ever talks about it! Thank you!!
I loved this show growing up, used to watch it back to back with OUT OF THIS WORLD on weekends. Great video!
Out of this world was a great show too
Out of This World.. was that with the character named Evie?
@@commentcopbadge6665 Yessir. Evie was so frickin hot!
This and Out OF This World were my jam back in the day.
@Russell Crocket me as well and did you also watch Munsters Today and The New Lassie which also aired around the same time period and station!
Mad respect for dropping this. Edison Twins has to be next. 🤙
OMFG I LOVED this show! 🎵"You'll never guess my secret identityyyyy..."🎵
ULTRAMAAAAANNNN!
Growing up Jerry O'Connell was the big brother I never had. He was my chubby buddy in stand by me, he even thought me about stream theory with sliders. To this day as a 40 year old man I want to meet him and thank him for the childhood memories.
You're the great pretender
Whats stream theory???????????
Grew up in Canada - huge Superhero fan, and this was on my list, still think back on My Secret Identity with fondness. Thank you for covering this Jo!
THANK YOU. This has been driving me mad for years!!!!
I have been convinced this was a thing with the flying and the cans for years but never could find anything about it.
I thought i was going mad and my mind was playing tricks on me.
I knew i wasn't going mad. Thanks man.
Here in Philly, it aired on channel 17 every Saturday afternoon. Over the years it ran along with Superboy, Super Force, Dracula, Lighting Force and some other low budget shows. I love that show. I was just like Andrew. In 1988, I was in 10th grade and an X-Men comic addict. My cousin Dan befriended Jerry O’Connell when they worked on a short live series called "Do Not Disturb".
Check out our Superboy episode you will enjoy it ruclips.net/video/XNUdvjOrITE/видео.html
Dan Kurtsbek?
@@commentcopbadge6665 No, Cistone. My cousin only did a bit part in episode 2. Niecy Nash headlined with O’Connell in the series.
I was the perfect age for this show and loved it so much. My mom got so mad that I used up every aerosol can in the house.
I loved this show as a kid! When "Smallville" came along, I said that it was a rip off of this show, and no one knew what I was talking about!
i'm so glad there are people who remember this show, i loved this show as a kid, mostly because i couldn't believe a kid from Stand By Me was in a Canadian series
I definitely remember my secret identity! It’s just among the many many many shows that became the staple of my childhood back then!
I am in highschool as of now and watched this so many times during the pandemic. My friends thought I was crazy when I told them but I didn't care lol. Great show. Great cast. Amazing execution
I'd like to see you do one of these on the TV show "Out of this World".
I loved this show!!!! I was hoping you guys would do a retrospective on this one
I loved this show! Hell, I knew who this Doctor J was before I even knew who Julius Erving was.
Awesome! Watching through this series again on RUclips now! One of my favorite syndicated shows as a kid along with Small Wonder, Charles in Charge, and Out of This World. Do Mr. T’s “T and T” next!
OOOH!!! Since you’ve done this forgotten gem do one for “Out of This World”
Great video.
I remember. Couldn't say it better. Still holds a special place.
Oh my God! you just unlocked my hidden memories of this show. Everything just rushed back in. I probably haven't thought about this show in over 30 years.
My Secret Identity was a proto Smallville mixed in with Back to the Future. Probably the first show to have left an everlasting fingerprint in my memory. Watching a TV series about a comic book fan who gets superpowers and learns the ropes and responsibilities of being a superhero was an absolute delight for a kid like me who was also into comics back then. I was like 6 years old at the time.
My friends and I have waited for decades, hoping someone would bring back MSI (or at least release it on DVD). Sounds like we’ll be waiting a little longer… Awesome job reviewing this great show!
I adored this, growing up! So great! Thanks 😊
At times we didn't have cable growing up, this show and superboy kept me going as kid.

OMG, I totally remember this show!! I had forgotten all about it, but thank you Joblo, for digging up a wonderful old buried memory, for me! I hate that it's never been released on home video, but at least it's up on RUclips,....for now. I adored this show, as a kid! It's also interesting & awesome to discover, that Fred Mollin was the composer of the theme song. As Fred also composed, one of my all time favorite horror movie themes, darkest side of the night, from Friday the 13th part 8.
As a kid growing up in downtown Toronto this show was awesome!!! I started collecting comics because of this show.
This just unlocked a memory from my childhood, I loved this show!!! Here in South Africa it was dubbed to Afrikaans.
This is the show that got Jerry O’Connell Sliders. This is also the show that made me never take Jerry O’Connell seriously again.
It was years before I realized he was in Stand By Me. He looked so different
I never heard of this show and I grew up around that time. I must say thank you for this informative video on this show. Makes me wonder what would happen if the show really did came back in the modern day time.
OMG, I had completely forgotten about this show! Thanks for the happy reminder! And yes, I totally agree' there SHOULD be a revival/follow-up show. Maybe on Hulu or something? Either way, keep the nostalgia-train chugging! =)
how about an episode on PARKER LEWIS CAN"T LOSE
Yes!
Being born in the early 80s I was too young to even know about this show, but I grew up with and still love comics. I actually have 3 long boxes full of them, most from the late 80s, 90s, and early to mid 2000s. I would've loved this show as a kid! I'm definitely going to watch some of season 1.
I really enjoyed this series! I’m glad you brought some attention to this show!
My favourite childhood tv show, I still sometimes watch old episodes on RUclips
Thanks David and JoBlo for reviewing this good, classic tv show. I had forgottened about it,entirely. don't really remember if I watched it or not, but, will view it on youtube tho.
Your Welcome i'm the one who put the rips of this show up on the pirate bay back in 2008. before that finding these online was impossible.
I started re-watching Cheers and during a season 1 episode Derek Mcgrath the guy from my childhood showed up and made me think "where do I know this guy?" Oh yeah, My Secret Identity , love this video.
You got mad respeck for this one.
This and Superboy were my favorite shows as a kid.
Check out our episode on that show

Also maybe the Superboy The Legacy RUclips channek
very cool to see the people behind the scenes
I remembered watching this as a teen, he always flies with the spray cans and that crazy professor of his. Thanks for making this. Anyway, why do you guys close the comment section for the Ms Marvel tv show review?
Loved this show growing up. And, yes, classic theme song.
This came on right after Out of This World. Fantastic hour of television.
Definitely need to reboot this show!
Jerry O Connell is a sweet guy I meet him in the big Apple/Manhattan. I was able to chat with him for a while but, it never crossed my mind to ask for his autograph. I was just happy to chat with him. I told him I loved his work on sliders. Still my favorite series! FYI: his actually a tall guy!..
Oh I'm so happy I found this video. I saw this when I was very young. I can't remember if I saw the whole series or a season. I'm from The Netherlands and back then certain shows aired much later here then when it did from the original country. I think i watched this when i was 9 or 10.
But I was thinking about this series for a long time. I didn't know the title or who starred in it. The only thing I remembered was that the main character uses spraycans to fly. Thanks for the video.
This show was amazing back in the late 80s. I have watched the show again as an adult because sometimes I have found that shows I really liked a lot as a kid I do not like as much as an adult. This show is still awesome and it is a crying shame that it did not make it past season 3. I feel like with proper exposure it could have gotten a lot bigger.
Forget My Secret Identity, that skullet is amazing.
Loved this! Too short lived! Needed more time to find its ground.
I used to watch this show followed by Jason Bateman's series 'It's Your Move', and I thought that hour of TV was fun. Then War of the Worlds (TV series) came on so it was back to sci-fi until one hour later when some qusi-sci-fi show starring Donna Pescow came on. That show--whatever it was called--was good, but only in small doses. In it, Donna had produced a baby with an alien and the show revolved around the girl and her relationship with her mother and missing her dad. It was good like every other episode.
@Wil Adams the show with Donna Pescow and Maureen Flanigan later 7th Heaven was called Out Of This World. 🤗📺🧐👍
Poor Jerry O'Connell. He has had a bad luck with staring in TV series.
That song was awesome.
I remember watching this Saturday morning
Let's add this to the list of shows that should be playing instead of 'Saved by the Bell'
Derek and Jerry had great chemistry.
"My Secret Identity" + "Out of This World" = "Secret World of Alex Mack"
I remember this one. I really wish either Syfy or Netflix could revive this show. How is a child in the 90s and I remember they used to show this on Syfy channel
I LOVED THIS SHOW!!! BUT I COULD NEVER REMEMBER THE NAME!!!
Great video. Loved this show. You need to do The New Adventures of Beans Baxter, or Parker Lewis can't lose.
Wow this brings back memories. I got my ass kicked by my sister for wasting her hairspray trying to hover with it
Holy sh*t, I totally forgot about this show. Definitely one of the shows I loved to watch back in my teens. Lol!
A fun show from the good old days. It takes me back to my school days. This show has a nice catchy theme song that was pretty cool for its time, i miss the 1990's I like that he had super strength, it 💪 😌 reminds me of superman because he had many similar powers though I'm not sure if he'd really be a match for Superman ha haa ha ha! I would like to see a reboot just like they did with other old films. What I miss about back then was some of my classmates because this show, makes me reminisce of way back when. This show had lots of interesting moments. From watching this show it made me believe that I could have super powers too just like Andrew! This show makes me warp to a good fun and happy times. I hope they make more good shows like this!
In the early 80s there was the Greatest American Hero and then later this show, happy days
Oh. My. Lord!!! I loved this show! I even added to my multiverse video wherein I included a classic superhero show universe. Earth 21. This was my jam. I even did fan fic in college about Captain Noble, Andrew's favorite in-show hero.
Loved this show in the uk
Heck Yeah another video ! Thanx Jesse!
Don’t forget to thank Dave too
@@JoBloOriginals and Dave of course!
Sick acoustic cover in the end!!
Vaguely remember watching this show on a 10" TV with tuner knobs. I think that station was WB for a while before becoming PHL17.
I'll always think of him as this character!! Watched Tomcats last night and just thought of this show!
I like that show during the rad 80s.
I absolutely love My Secret Identity.
I rewatched the series when the pandemic hit. Loved the final season. Kirk and Mrs Shellenbach were favorites.
I grew up saying “Dr J” all the time
Another series I liked but had totally forgotten about.
I liked that show when I was a kid. Unfortunately it was put on and taken off schedule basically without notice on german television.
But knowing what I know now I got to say it‘s kind of a kids version of The Greatest American Hero, with the uncontrollable powers and such…
They also aired this series in The Netherlands, but changed the title to 'Mijn Andere Ik' (transl. 'My other me').
I totally remember this show. I’m pretty sure I watched every episode of it. And yes, I still hum the theme song every now and again. Two memories I have (which might be warped) was how the second season premiere was interrupted (on KTLA 5 in Los Angeles) because of the San Francisco earthquake during the World Series. And the second memory was how the show never came back after season 3. I was still young and didn’t understand cancellations and so I blamed the Gulf War as to the reason the show never returned 🤣 as if the tv stations chose to air the war coverage over my special show, My Secret Identity lmao
My childhood. God I'm starting to feel old 😂
I remember I watched it every sat morninig
I saw a few episodes of this show.
Damn inwas searching for this tw show for years!!! In Itali was caled ultra boy and i dident find it any were! Tnx man realy tnx! I remember taking hair spray cans and try to fly 😅🤣🤣🤣
I miss TV, music and movies from the '80s. 🙂
The pilot music was different. So was season 3. I used to have the instrumental from the artist himself. He was really cool about sending it to me.
I watched this my entire childhood and still never understood the spray can flying
Damn, I forgot all about this show. Remember the 80s show Wiz Kids?
Used to love this show
I thought I am the only one remembering this show :D
I recorded this show, while I was at school. I'd come home, and watch the two episodes Sci-fi showed, while I was at school. This was PRE DVR. VCR timer is what I used.
I loved this show as a kid, because I was always told I look exactly like Jerry. I agree, and it was like watching me, with super powers, on TV. It was awesome, but now that we're both adults, I only think I look a little like him, but as kids, we could have been brothers.
I looked like Jerry too - now, not so much (sadly).
Remember this syndicated series. It was a low budget series but it had a lot of story.
It aired with Superboy Superforce and Dracula the series.
Derek McGrath is like a Canadian version of Sylvester McCoy.
Check out our Superboy episode ruclips.net/video/XNUdvjOrITE/видео.html
I remember reruns of “My Secret Identity” airing on the WB network in the late 90s/early 2000s. That’s when I first found out about the show.
I always wondered what happened to this show loved it as a kid
This show, one episide expecially, taught me an important lesson: If you ever get superpowers do not become a superhero, because humanity does not need one.
Also, do not use it to became a supervillain because humanity is not worth to be dominated either.
Let's be honest: 80's shows and cartoons had the best theme songs.
Never knew it was almost coming back
Oh man.... I have had this show in the back of my head for literal decades, but couldnt remember the name. Let alone remember if it was even real. I just remember watching a dude fly around by spraying aerosol cans. I miss our ridiculous 80s programming
I sometimes imagine this show as a Sliders prequel.
Just for fun.
