Vegetable tan boots are rare because of how much more expensive veg tan leather is but Nicks Handmade Boots worked with one of the best tanneries in the world, Wickett & Craig, to create a veg tan boot. So they sent me a pair to cut in half and put them to the test.

It’d be cool if we could do another comparison with veg tan and chrome after a year or 2 of wear, let’s see what wearing over time does to the testing results
Definitely a great idea
$1000 Jordans cut in half: "huh"
These Nicks boots cut in half: 😭😭😭
for real though! I think it's the craftsmanship that kills me to cut apart more than the price
Those Jordans weren’t even remotely worth $1,000, these boots look like they are actually worth their price tag.
@@Anti-Taxxer the Jordan's are only worth that much because of the aftermarket demand for them because of the rarity
Those Jordans are like those Gucci products, expensive because of the brand but the quality is just shit
The sound from the initial plunge of the blade into the vamp - just breaks my heart every time. But the sound from the initial plunge of the blade into the vamp of these Nicks - hurts my soul. Beautiful boots. And I love my Nicks Waxed Flesh Urban Loggers. So now the only remaining question before getting these: medium arch or moderate arch. Because they're hard to pass up with the discount code.
Yeah, this was hard to watch because that's a beautiful pair of boots. But, hey, it's for research/science/man stuff. Thanks Wes
It's retarded science.
@@merlyn2121 I'm like a deer in headlights
@@marcavonevans I gotta say though. Nicks blow redwings out if the water.
@@merlyn2121 No doubt! These are great boots from construction to aesthetic.
These boots look tame compared to those other tall Nicks boots that looks as if Satan could wear'em
I think it'd be really cool if you did a history of leather video. What processes were used 100, 1000, and 10000 years ago. How have things changed. How are tanning processes different for different animals and in different parts of the world.
1xxrecar I think people just buy it now b4 they hunt an animal kill it skin it dry it and wear it
Definitely
Might need to construct a textile expert for much of this information?
EDIT: I guess this would be a place to start?
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conservation_and_restoration_of_leather_objects
Im native american, and one of my family friends is a traditional moccasin crafter, and he tans his own leather. Idk how but i know he does it.
It's mostly urine and feces until the last 200 years or so. Seriously.
Thanks for pointing out that holsters should be made of veg tan leather. Now I know what to specifically ask holster manufacturers before I buy their holsters. I love your channel!!
I'm happy that you showed the full cut before talking about the boots. I think it's the better and more enjoyable way to make the video.
100%
I'm loving these new test formats you're creating ! Your videos are getting higher and higher in quality all the time.Great video !
I'd like to see videos on Role Club vs Nicks. Definitely your break down of a Role Club boot since you've done Nicks already. Thanks for putting out these entertaining and informative videos. Happy trails and nothing but good vibes my dude!
5 weeks into my Nick's Ranger order, another 4 weeks till my try on pair arrives. Cant wait!!!
Thanks for your cool cut in half video,
It really is a remarkable testament to the leather makers that they can take a natural product with all of the different variables and come up with such consistency after processing.
I have a pair of these. They are the most comfortable boots I've had. Thanks for cutting them up, I always wondered what was inside.
I don't own a pair and probably never will (for lack of funds and necessity), but it sure hurt to watch them be torn apart.
I already have a pair of brown casual boots, but I really want these too. Good boots are expensive but so worth it.
TheGreatChrisB tears were shed
Save your money. I saved up for a year before getting mine. Also they do sales on Labor Day and Father's Day, atleast they did so this year. You can do it!
You never know you might find them at a garage sale or at Goodwill, sometimes you get lucky
@@thomaspatrickparker6648 given that Labor Day was yesterday and the sale is over I can say it was on sale for 10%
Your experiments are really stepping up! This is awesome! Great stuff man
I would really appreciate a video on different 'cuts' of leather (Belly, Bend, Butt, Shoulder) and what qualities you should look for in different applications. I think it would also be great to get these comparisons in different price ranges within leather supply - the side of things that a customer would never really get to see or understand. Thank you!
I love my nick’s boots. My husband and I have matching pairs. My grandfather was a bootmaker in the Czar’s Army and had a shoe repair shop when they came to the U. S. I BLAME HIM FOR MY LOVE OF QUALITY LEATHER GOODS!
I just love your unbiased reviews with almost scientific approach. Its really fun to watch how your channel and videos improve steadily and you are more and more precise with our tests. Respect!
Thanks I appreciate it!
But he clearly misinterpreted the data shown on his tests. I think it’s an honest mistake since he showed the numbers and we can see the gauge for ourselves, but this video is clearly biased in favour of vegetable tanning.
I just pulled the trigger and ordered a pair of these exact boots. I am excited for them to arrive and its only been a few minutes!
The Nicks Robert is a nice boot, I have a pair in natural chromexcel roughout. The arch is way more supportive than the arch on the Falcon, but it's a little extreme at first if you're not used to it.
This video is from years ago but this pair of boots are one of the best looking pair I have seen on the channel.
The quality of the hide matters much more than the tanning process, the "best" tanning really depends on what kind of leather you are starting with and what you intend to do with it. So in many cases the best and most expensive leathers are chrome tanned. Full grain calfskin for example - which is what most of the highest end dress shoes are made of - is always chrome tanned (at least in the context of shoemaking).
Great review and testing. Love those boots
Dang, Nick's just emailed me about these today, and here you are... Good job sir!
It’s almost like we strategize it ha ha
Keep up the good work man! :)
Love your channel! Keep up the awesome work!
3 weeks out of foot surgery and have a brand new pair of Ariat Buffalo shoes in black from your recommendation that I haven’t had a chance to wear yet. I see them, geek out over them, then put them back on my shoe rack patiently waiting for the moment to put them both on. Thanks for your your videos.
I was just wearing mine today and was thinking about how much I love them
I’m so excited and scared for these boots. Can’t wait for my Roberts to arrive. Great video once again.
Did you order a pair!?
Rose Anvil I did after your first nicks video.
Great video & good luck with the move to SLC!
Great video! Makes me wish I could get the boots that I ordered in late May from your Builder Pro video . Still waiting for those try on boots.
Same. Starting to get slightly irritating.
Awesome video! Keep up the great work 👍🏼
Wow Weston ! Great video yet again! i like your sheer strength tester.
Thanks joe!
I'm getting ready to order a pair of Travelers in Burgundy!! 20 weeks is gonna be painful! Haha. I have a piar of the Bison's that Carl M. Collaborated on with Nick's and they don't quite match each other but are so well built and so comfortable that I have to have another pair!! Good job Brother!
Thank you, Sir. Very useful info about leather etc. Cheers!
God, that boot is a work of art!
These look gorgeous!!
This was like watching Old Yeller being put down. It hurt my soul, but I knew it had to be done.
He really struggles to cut these boots compared to the other cheaper ones… speaks volumes to Nicks quality!
I've been waiting for my boots since your first video and you just cut up a perfectly good pair... My heart hurts a little right now... I wish you had done a scuff comparison. I love the look of the veg tanned but went with cxl because I believe it handles scuffing better. Great video! Thank you for doing this!
That’s a really good idea!
Veg tan is 1.5x stronger when wet, 1.2x stronger when dry. It isn't even a contest - veg tan can conform to your feet. It is 'live'. Chrome tan is like faux leather.
Have you thought of doing this with cowboy/ work boots? I would love to see all the technology in modern pull-on boots!
I too would love to see pull-ons:
Engineer, harness, cowboy, etc
i have both veg tanned and chrome tanned boots so this was very informative
Wish i had this 10% off code a month ago when i ordered a pair of these bad boys 😀 thanks for the video
me too...
I menan it's kind of strange cause usually the discount brands give YTers is no different than the discount you can get from just going to their site (especially places like Ray-con) so if he is getting exclusive deals from brands that's probably a good sign.
Good luck in your new location!!!
I'm a simple man; I see a Rose Anvil video, I watch and enjoy it. Keep doing the good work Wes.
You’re the type of person I need in my life
@@RoseAnvil Just gotta live life asking yourself: What would Keanu do?
Love how scientific you are getting.
Thanks! Emphasis on “getting” ha ha
oh the pain, watching them being cut. best boots ever.
Great video! I'm a big boot enthusiast and have been mulling getting a pair of nicks casuals for quite a while. This discount may very well give me that final push to pull the trigger...
Go for it. Make sure you go to a local authorized fitter to get them fit. (Unless you live in Washington and you can go to Nick's brick & mortar) if there isn't an authorized fitter near you, make sure you have someone else fit them for you (like your friend, wife, or girlfriend). Don't try to do it yourself because it'll throw the measurements off when you are bending over.
@@xenonram There remote fitting process also works well!
Do it! Then we can chat about them when all get them!
Might be interesting to test dropping something like a punch or screwdriver onto a pair of work boots...some kind of real world scenario...and see what kind of damage is done, and if the damage can be buffed out
Instead of using the jerking hydralic pump you might get smoother and more precise results using a manual chain hoist in both tests.
Brilliant
Feels weird being here so early.
Thank you for telling us that vital information sir. We are all here for *you* . You are valid. Your feelings matter so much.
Those are well designed tests, don’t sell yourself short! About the only thing that could improve these results is to do more samples just to check the consistency. Then you could geek out on the statistical analysis!
Painfully satisfying!
Hey Weston! I was wondering if you can do an experiment on different types of insoles. I want to see how much a different between leather and foam insoles are at shock absorbtion.
In theory at least leather should form to your foot over time and provide butter support but foam will generally provide more padding but I at least would definitely be interested in seeing if it is possible to objectively test the two to see exactly how big of a difference there is between them.
Yes, I'm interested as well.
I feel like I always hear 2 conflicting things.
Leather is best cuz it firms to your foot perfect.
But I slso hear shock absorbtion is important and a leather sole wouldn't seem to have that.
Your testing setup is super impressive. I think you can call those results reasonably conclusive
Im here super early! Hahaha love the video
Great video. Gorgeous pair of boots. Would you look at doing a cut in half review of the Thursday Boot Company’s Captain or Vanguard boots?
Congrats on the 1mil viewed video! 🤗
They look like an amazing boot
i just saw that Rose Anvil has 888k subscribers. being a boot nerd i absolutely love these videos, but i was totally unaware there were so many brothers out there. i look around and other than a few random pairs of Red Wing i rarely see heritage boots on peoples feet. yet here were are with close to a million other nerds watching videos of boots getting destroyed.,
I picked up a pair of the Falcons about a month ago. Didn't have the discount code... They are wearing in nicely and I wear them for everything they don't look like any hipster boots I've seen.
The chrome vs veg was super interesting.
Those falcons are 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I believe these are actually The Robert boot on the 55 last. Beautiful boots indeed!
Man that's a very good looking pair of boots
I love your videos you should do a saddleback leather wallet review
awesome as usual
Your channel was mentioned by Courtney Ryan on her channel.
Thanks for mentioning it, really liked her channel!
Isnt that Teddy's girlfriend?
Brandon Key yes she is
who's that?
Sooo a tiny channel mentioned him. Wow.........
these videos have really sold me on Nicks boots. Will buy a pair to replace my iron rangers when they wear out.
Do it so we can chat about them and nerd out over them
Way better than Iron Rangers, why wait
Rose Anvil, can you do the water test on leather rough out vs smooth? I've always wondered if there's any difference in water repellent.
This man waited 6-7 months for his purchase just to cut it in half. Gotta admire the commitment.
On another note, my leather laces that came on my Nicks boots snapped after a couple months of use. Wasn't a big deal because I had spare laces but was quite a bummer.
I've decided to buy a pair of Nick's boots now I'm just watching through all your reviews and other people's to decide which one to buy lmao
Congrats on 200k! Wow. PLEASE can you do Frye Westin Chukkas? Frye is all over the map in terms of quality, but I have 3 pairs and really like them but am extremely curious how they’re really made, under the hood. I considered dissecting one myself but I don’t want to lose a finger or worse :-) thanks!
Weston
Wow, the price has increased significantly in the last 2 years. 495 after the code compared to 680 today with this leather.
Another very cool cut in half video and informative too.
Just wondering about the AJ1 Diors if the its price tag suits the materials its made of and if there's a chance we could see a tear down of it here.😎💪👍🙌🤟🤘✌
Good information for those of us who wonder.
Ok, I prefer the sneaker videos, but this is cool too
Edit: I still find sneakers more interesting in general, but this is the nicest boot I've ever seen. One of the only things that you put on your feet that you can justify paying 500 dollars
I 100% agree
Can you do a video on the timberland earthkeepers. I've really enjoyed my pair and id like to see how good they will be in the long run.
My vote is for the Falcon as well! Hopefully I can convince wifey to grab me a pair for my birthday in August!
If she okays the birthday present you’ll get it at Xmas. But it’s worth it! Go through the fittings
jeffrey goss it’ll be tough, but I’m sure the patience will pay off!
I would go ahead and mail them a fit sheet of your feet now so they have it on file for when the wife gives the okay 😉👍
Doooo itttt! I am so excited for the group chat!
I've been waiting months for them to make my Roberts and there they are getting cut in half. how long did you have to wait?
Need a test of real McCoy’s Shinki horse hide!
Hello, Wes. Excelent content. A mic would really improve your vids. Keep the good work going. 👍🏻
One day!
Should do a halls safety boot like the 367W's interested in the quality and the special shank since it's a lineman specific boot
Color dyes can affect properties of leather, too.
Motorcycle suits, especially race suits, are not more completely some of the ultra-bright colors, in larger part because of how poorly a Hi-Vis Green/Yellow and Yellow perform over the same hide in a regular Red or Blue. They use Kangaroo a lot for its high strength, but guys like Valentino Rossi who love the Hi-Vis used it sparingly and as an applique over a base leather because the different colors of the same leather perform so poorly when dyed certain ways. Tests or crashes that hardly scuff a Repsol Orange, Yammy/Suzuki Blues or Kawi Green will eat right through a florescent yellow/green like it is tissue paper. Vale used a certain green in "The Doctor" across his ass and after a fall, often the letters of green color are about gone while the other letters are just scratched. Dianese did finally come up with a rather bright Yellow that lasts enough he uses more of it, though it isn't fully as bright as he wants, but his Monster Green sponsor logo is still not a structural portion of the suit, and the yellow is often over the Kevlar elastic parts, or where it won't see the abrasion in a crash, has boots under it, etc.
Could you please make a review on the STEEL brand boots. They make pretty cheap steel toe working boots and many people wear them instead of docs due to the price.
To me the results make sense. Veg tan is stiffer so should be harder to puncture but less flexible so would rip or crack easier when bending.
Similar to steel hardened (clenched) vs not clenched. One would probably be better for flexibility but ding or dent easier. Vs hardened would snap when trying to bend it.
On of the comments below is interesting on once broken in what would the numbers be?
Have you seen the cactus “leather”? It would be nice if you could get some and run tests on it to see how it compares.
I didn't realize that was a thing I might try buying a small peice to see how durable it is, I doubt it would be durable enough for most of my uses.
@@garethbaus5471 It doesn't necessarily need to be as strong as the strongest leather to be a practical material. It's supposed to breathe like real leather too so maybe it could be used as an alternative for cheap leather products. Maybe it's better than that. I'm interested what uses someone like you who use leather would have for it if any.
Brilliant idea
Rose Anvil Glad you like it, I hope you make a video on that! I also hope it’s a decent product because it could be a good ecological alternative.
I want to see a comparison between leathers from horse, cow, alligator, ostrich, elephant, etc.
i'd love to see a moc toe red wing dissection :)
I just received my Roberts this week the lead time they give when doing the fit sheet is 8- 10 weeks while mine took 14 weeks. This would have been fine if they had just given me an update but I always had to reach out to them which was a little off putting. That being said when I did reach out they responded right away like w/ in 30 min of my email. So far they seem like great boots I got them for light duty work casual camping, woodworking ect. and I think they'll be great for that.
That's a nice boot....too nice to cut. I wanted to cry seeing them being destroyed.
Instagram group nerd out is a great idea!
I’m glad someone agrees
Can you tell us about the boots that you show as the aged version of this leather? They look great. What conditioning have they seen so far?
Can you do Thursday boots next. Iv been considering buying it and see it everywhere.
Can you try reviewing Canada west/ wm moorby boots? I want to see what they’re made of and am curious how they compete to some American brands
I wonder how they’d compare to combination tanned like CXL.
Can always wax/oil veg tan to increase the water resistance if you need to.
Hey Wes, what are your thoughts on deer leather for shoes? Would love to see a comparison between the different leathers.
That’s interesting I’ll look in to it
Hello, I must say that I'm little confused about puncture test... Chrome tanned showed more weight prior to puncture than veg tanned, however what are these numbers in brackets? I didn't see it on scale during puncture test process... It makes veg tan more puncture resistant, but I don't know how. Would be glad if someone can clarify this to me, thanks :)
I got this boots a week ago and are the most stiffer boot ever had. Breaking is super hard. Stiffer than my Builders Pro 8oz leather. Now I know why!
The molding toy feet is very different, is premium Leather for sure.
Nicks is my favorite brand. 4 pairs and will go for more .....
Send pics
The break-in is rough, but then you have the best fitting boots you'll probably ever own.
No doubt about that Sir! Will be the most comfortable boots....
I had a Falcons in black and since dayn1 they came very pliable. This color Veg Brown is fighting more but already started breaking. Same struggle with new boots.
Are they water proof?
@@NSixtyFour no, Sir. Not waterproof
I have 3 of these boots, first is the work station black, second is the packer boots brown and third is a ranger contender boots. They are pretty hard to break them in.
Ya these veg tan boots are sooo hard at first.
these boots are INTENSE
I kind of cried a little when he started cutting that beautiful boot.
Nice video 👍🙀
So moving to Salt Lake . If Toaster slips out again he will think he's got a long trip ahead to make it "home" to the old shop. I know you will watch out for him. Hope the move goes smoothly. Look forward to your videos from the new spot. BTW good video , would like to own a pair but I'm non-essential so this is not the right time to invest in quality footwear. Oh well.
