@@easychang4261Because of the circumstances that made him this way, especially after the New Order government came to power in 1966. Before that era, even though he had renounced his Chinese citizenship, he still used a Chinese name. The first generation of Chinese immigrants, the majority of whom came from the provinces of Fujian and Guangdong, came to the Dutch East Indies and could not speak any foreign language except their own dialect. The second generation who were born in the Dutch East Indies or post-independent Indonesia already speak the local language where they live but their ancestral traditions are still strong. The third generation, born in the early 1960s, had already attended Indonesian national schools and had begun to change their names to Indonesian names. Some may ask why before the New Order era the Chinese did not change their names. Chinese names are unique and it seems like no other nation in the world puts their surname before their name. What about Korea and Vietnam? These two countries have been part of China's sphere of influence (Sinosphere) for centuries, so it is natural that they adopted Chinese culture as well. Chinese names consist of 3 syllables which can be divided into three parts, namely: clan - generation name and personal name (or it could also be clan - personal name and generation name). Apart from that, writing names in Hanzi (Han characters) when replaced with Latin letters is quite difficult because they are written based on the sound of the characters. For example, Indonesian and Malaysian Chinese names will be different when written in Latin letters: Go - Goh, Tjoa - Chua, Lie - Lee etc.). Apart from that, if their names are replaced with Indonesian names, the clan names will no longer be visible. Surname is pride and identity in Chinese culture. So in everyday conversations in China the first thing to ask when meeting someone you just met is "what is your surname" not "what is your name". It's not surprising that there are also those who use Indonesian names but still include their surname. Examples: John Lie, Junior Liem, Eduard Tjong. In the New Order era, because the Soeharto government's policy at that time was to assimilate by pressure, the majority of Chinese people changed their names. Using the Indonesian name feels more comfortable, especially when dealing with government bureaucracy. You can imagine the situation and conditions at that time, everything Chinese experienced discrimination or unpleasant things in everyday life. Even though they have changed their names, many still include their surnames in the new names. For example, conglomerate Liem Sioe Liong became Sudono Salim, TjieTjin Hoan became Ciputra, Phang Djun Phen became Prayogo Pangestu. The fourth generation and Chinese millennials, especially those born in Java, I think many no longer have Chinese names. The birth certificate has a full Indonesian name and no aliases anymore. So we often hear the Chinese joke in Java "she lang she li" meaning the surname has been lost or forgotten (ilang = lost, lali = forgotten). Considering that Chinese schools were closed in 1966, the generations born later did not have the opportunity to learn Mandarin. As a result, they cannot speak, let alone write the Hanzi which is used to name their children. Different things happen outside Java, such as Sumatra and Kalimantan. Even though there are many who cannot write Hanzi or speak Mandarin, their daily language is Hokkien, Khek, Teo Ciu dialect, etc. So even though formally they don't have Chinese names, family and close friends still call them by their Chinese names. id.quora.com/Kenapa-orang-keturunan-Tionghoa-di-Indonesia-memiliki-dua-nama
