I played one of these at guitar center while testing out a pair of headphones and bought it on the spot. It’s so comfortable to play and sounds amazing. I can’t believe anyone hates this bass.
Yep ! I got one(green) love the hell out of it. That neck is just so comfy and fast, hidden gem, easily plays and feels like I could have paid 12-1300. for it instead of B stock 570.00 that I ended up. Steal of a deal
Grabbed a new one today at guitar center. It was on clearance for 389. Apparently no one likes them and they couldn’t sell it. Lucky me! I think It’s great.
I love it and will be ordering one. I was happy to find they didn't try and replicate the mechanics of the Rick bridge, just the looks, because Rick bridges are notoriously garbage to adjust.
I played one of these at a local Guitar Center and was blown away by the tones this guy pumps out and how comfortable it felt in my hands. I have all levels of basses, from Squiers to master-builds, and I must say this was as much fun to play as anything in my Arsenal. I have much respect for Rickies and their storied history, but personally I’ve never played one I’ve like or connected with tonally or by feel. I know the two don’t really compare-but I don’t think these were meant to be taken as a serious challenger to that market of players. But boy these are just a blast to play and sound surprisingly good.
I feel like the people who hate this are just being elitest at this point. I played one recently and loved it. If it had been around 8 years ago Iwould have 1000% bought it as a budget friendly Rickbass
Man, imagine if that P pickup was reversed. It sounds so much meatier with the pickups farther away from the bridge, but if that neck pickup was flipped, it would thicken up the top and tighten up the bass
You like the feel of Gibson basses in your hand because they have 95% of their mass towards the neck so they feel substantial as you prevent the headstock smashing to the floor!
Fender has a corporate covenant called “Golden Handcuffs” that prevents them from altering the P Bass, Jazz Bass, Jaguar Bass, Tele and Strat. They can DJ-Remix options and colors and signature models but that’s about it. The reason is these instruments are the biggest cash generating machine in the history guitar and bass sales for over 50 years. However, at Jackson, there are no such restrictions. This is a design experiment and I applaud the effort to shake, I mean, “shock-things-up.” I would defiantly remove the chrome pickup cover bridge if I get one.
I don’t hate this bass, honestly I think this is a great modding bass. Chuck a darkglass pre amp, maybe update the pickups, a thumb rest, and a detuner and you would have a very unique bass
I got one and I'm not replacing anything in this . It kicks ass just the way it is highly recommend it .I got it for 600.00 and it plays and feels every bit like a 1200.00 bass .
I agree, the "hazard cone" orange is actually cool 😁 It also comes in a faux fire-glo finish. If I didn't already have a Jackson Concert X, I would definitely get this...who am I kidding? I'll get one eventually just because !
I really like it. I must be one of the few out there who actually doesn't like Rickenbackers. I've played a couple, I've owned one (not for long) and I plum didn't like them. The feel of them and the sound. The one thing I liked was the look of them, so this Jackenbacker straight away ticks the aesthetic box for me. I like the sound of it too. For me this and the Nordy Acinonyx are the two most interesting new basses of the past year.
Never had Jackson bass, but that one is definitely one of the guitars, I really want to have. Love that strong, old school sound, look, style. Great bass
You're right , there's been no videos of this . So I appreciate it ! I thought it was cool when it first got released . Would love to give one a go . Rickenbacker owns that niche industry , so it's cool Jackson threw a bone at it but kept the headstock . Sounds really good . Love the rush tattoo . They were my first concert , I believe 2008 or 2009 Snakes and Arrows tour . Was probably 10 or 11
I tried one out a while ago and I think it's a very competent bass. The green finish wasn't as garish in person as the photos make it seem. This one is going to age well as people warm up to it. Here's hoping they add some more crazy colors in the future. Purple maybe?
I have the 5 string version of this bass. One thing to warn of is it does not down tune well. (Drop G) . I had to drill out the B string saddle hole for bigger strings and crank the S out of the saddle and it still was, is, crazy loose. I also put Lace Alumitones on it to calm it down a little. Pretty bad ass now with a full set up but in the meantime I got a G&L 1500 S750 and right out of the case I dropped to the same tuning and it didn’t flinch. Love them both still and as high end as the G&L is I keep coming back to the Jackenbacker. It’s just bad ass.
I've been spellbound by it since I first saw it on the tubes. It isn't beautiful because it's a timeless and original design, but the morph it does, almost like those Fender Parallel Universe thingies, is what gets me. Its near side show looks is what hypnotizes me and the fact that it sounds good, and doesn't look like ((established canon)) basses appeals a lot to me. It helps that it comes from a Fender company, cos you know they have lots of information on what makes a good bass in their legacy.
i own the guitar center exclusive one, probably my favorite bass of all time only thing i wish they wouldve done is put a push pull like they do in their other basses
It's probably one of the best sound PJs and great to play bass I ever tried. As soon as it showed up on my local GC I got my eyes on it. It sounds really good and I love the neck. The same bass was sitting at GC for months and I knew it was going on sale anytime soon. I got my fire burst finish (probably GC exclusive) on this black Friday and I can't wait it to get delivered today. I think the only think I don't like on this bass is the nut, which is cheap plastic. The rest I love it. I never liked Rickenbackers but it's something that grew on me overtime. This bass is a mix of everything on 80s metal. It would probably be the most popular bass between metal bands if it was released 40 years ago.
Just picked up the Rocket Red/orange version last week marked down to 375$ at GC. Unfortunately the other colors are 799$ now. So far I'm digging it. No complaints yet
bought this when i decided to switch from guitar to bass. i played jackson soloist guitars so picking a jackson was a no brainer for me. the simplicity in the look also drew me in as opposed to the more modern looking jackson basses they have in their catalog. playability is good as well, easy transition from guitar playing
I have a Jackson in my inventory, which is more like a Lackland, made when Jackson was part of Charvel. It's the best action of any bass I've played over the past 25 years. I think the CBXNT DX is BOLD! I want one.
Went to test my amp after it was fully serviced. Mesa Boogie Bass 400+ . Saw this bass and thought wow This looks really cool and different. Grabbed it turned up the volume ohhhh WOW sounds absolutely amazing. Totally blew away. Looks feels sounds awesome very comfortable easy to play. Well done Jackson. I want it. A kick ass off the shelf Bass at a great price.
My 'Going To The Grave' Bass, is a Jackson Concert that I have since 1996, as you mentioned in the very beginning the comfort of the neck is the main reason for that. I'm about to buy another one very soon.
I bought the Piano Black on Black Friday for $500 free shipping use for studio and local shows people love it got to see in person amazing bass the neck is like a wizard
I have a 1979 4001 Rick and ive gone to my luthier to have the back of the neck matted black. I hated the jetglo lacquer on the back of the neck because after a while it stuck to my hands (really bad if its sweaty) and my fretting hand thumb always got stuck and it was just not comfortable to play in longer sessions. Now that its matted its AMAZING.
I’m literally about to go buy one in like 15 mins. I’m just undecided on whether I want it in your “typical and uninspiring, yet safe” burst or that crazy and totally out of this world orange. I work at a music store so I’m getting a great deal on it.
Just found about this bass an hour ago. Beeeaaautiful in black! got to buy it, love the Rick looks...not much the headstock, but it gives a personal touch in heavy metal style.
"It's named like an Ibanez" cracked me up haha, thank you for this review I was hoping to get a budget version of the Rickenbacker sound Edit: Also you're awesome for demoing the bass with Rush baselines haha Edit edit: And for describing a bass tone as burpy haha
I love it just for the fact that someone is really doing something different. Yes, it might be mostly on the looks, but still. And the preamp really makes it nice and versatile. The only thing actually might be that there should be some way to bypass the preamp.
IDK, neck-thru for $700? I might buy one in a few months or so. Kinda wish they would have done more of a traditional headstock to go along with the theme.
The Concord headstock is an iconic part of the Jackson brand. They were designed that way to differentiate them from the custom Charvels when Grover Jackson owned both. The USA Charvels were made as high quality modifiable custom clones of Fender instruments in the late seventies when Fender quality was not very consistent. IIRC when Grover was going to have lower priced imports produced he changed the headstock shape, and put his name on them in case they bombed so the Charvel brand would not be damaged. It worked out exceedingly well since USA custom Jacksons were started, and eventually there were import Charvel models with the Concord headstocks. I have always liked the distinctiveness of the headstock. It is a shame that the cookie cutter hair bands of the eighties stigmatized these and many other excellent instruments. Indeed the headstock grows on you once you play one for a period of time.
Truthfully I don’t think this bass is that bad. I mean I can understand Why some people thought this bass looks weird, but still I don’t think the jacksonbaker bass is that bad. The design looks rather sleek. I think it looks nice in a black finish. Tone wise, it sounds phenomenal. It’s versatile, it’s punchy, and it sounds great for metal. Plus I do think Jackson basses are underrated. If you guys haven’t tried it, check out the spectra basses. I’ve tried one out 3 years ago and it’s sounds awesome. It has unique features, it’s versatile, and it sounds killer with distortion. Definitely worth checking out.
These things are going for as low as 400 now at guitar center. The website might not state it, but I went to two of them and they were marked down to $400 for the black and the orange, and $500 for the green and the fire burst. This thing sounds so damn good for it’s price. Get one.
If it was passive and had 2 vol and tone knob it would've been an automatic buy, I like getting tone from the rest of my gear but I do miss the clicky ellefson sound by just plugging in
I'm buying it rn, i think it's the best bass i've ever played (for the record, last bass i played was a '73 usa fender precision with a seymour duncan j pickup added, so... I'm a pj guy)
Thanks for doing this review. I just bought one, which is my first Jackson. (And I actually bought the Orange 🍊) 😂 This video helped me out. I plan to shred this baby this weekend. We'll see how it goes. You just got another subscriber. Thanks again, guys.
I think it sounds very different from a regular PJ - much throatier. Probably because the pickups are much closer to the neck. Maybe the pickup voicing is also different, and the neck through construction and the massive bridge might also contribute to its sound. I dig it, even though it's not made for my style at all. But it's one of the coolest Hard Rock basses I can think of! Come on, a comfortable and really flexible Rick/Fender mashup bass with tons of 80s vibe!
I've been looking for a PJ bass that costs more than $300 and less than $700. It looks like it's down to between this and the Yamaha BB-434. Anyone played both and have a preference? Sadly, they aren't bound anymore. And there are a couple new colors since 2022. I don't understand why so many people hate this bass. I think it looks pretty dang cool. Thanks for the real talk, and thanks for the Rush bass riffs.
I just played 5 of these, including 5-string, and laid away a 4-string. I'm impressed by build, the incredible neck, and the authentic tones from Fender to Rick - not an easy trick. Hate it until you try it.
Despite all the hate towards this bass, I like the look of the black and white version, only thing I don’t like is the headstock but thats not a big issue. I just wish they made left handed version, I’d totally buy it in a heartbeat
As a fan of both Ricks and Jacksons in terms of looks, I had this design idea in my head a year ago after Jackson actually made it. I really like it but still I am not sure if I would use this as my primary bass.
We live in a dimension where pickup covers exist, there is another parallell dimension where they were never invented and I'm doing my best to get over there.
That bass sound fantastic! And for $700?!?!? If the string spacing at the nut is at least as wide as a P-Bass, I’m down to try one in black as well. Great honest review. I’m now a subscriber.
Haven't played one yet, and when I first saw one, I hated the look of it. But, its growing on me, really digging the looks of it now, it just looks "right," to my eye. Really liking the metallic green one.
7:11 - 7:39 - Was that just an improvisation or is that existing song? Sound familiar, but I can't remember what it could be, Shazam doesn't help either. Anyway, great video and great bass too!
The pickup position gives it the Rickenbacker sound - aprx 4 and 8 inches from the bridge respectively for the bridge and neck pickups. It sounds great. $700 great? Not sure.
What a great review. THANK YOU. I have a 66 P that I modded into a PJ*. Anyway, I've got other basses, Warwick, Steinberger, Ibanez, MusicMan and my current "meat & potatoes" bass is a Yamaha early '90s PJB. I love this bass! I too favor the orange (favorite color) but I'd go for the black 'cause I don't want to be on stage playing a Folk gig with an orange bass! Well, maybe YOU do. . . Black goes with everything, orange goes with much less. *Sorry to all you purest out there, I was a gigging bassist for many years, playing Blues/Boogie, Rock, Funk, Disco, Folk and so on. . . I needed the versatility.
About to pick this up in teh 5 string variety. Going to be trading my two lower end jacksons in on it. As a pick player, when i played this at my local Music Shop, it sounded amazing, but I think, like you, I will have to adjust where I pick. I tend to pick right on the pickup almost, and so will have to use the cover as an anchor point. So, I will definitely have to adjust to that.
I love it when people judge a book by the cover - NOT! i’m leaving my comment on February 5, 2023, less than a year and a half after this video was uploaded. Truth be told, if I wasn’t attempting during this calendar year to starve my gear acquisition syndrome and thought I needed another electric bass for my rig, I would not shut the book on this model right off the cuff. Jackson might be one of the brands that I have been stonewalling like Ibanez, but that has nothing to do with the quality. For certain, I have enjoyed the demos which have graced RUclips since this video went up. It sounds a lot beefier to me just from a pair of iPad speakers than most other models with those pickups. The only thing that would interfere with me getting one if I were in the market for another bass is that I would prefer getting one that had at least one bucker if not two, after having owned for bass guitars that were all S’s.
I really want one of these. I never understand the hate toward these sorts of things. Charvel made tele shapes with floyd rose bridges, which I love, and everyone complained it had a floyd and didn't have a traditional tele headstock. Like, if you want traditional then buy the traditional model? They aint going anywhere.
I started off hating it when I first saw it funnily enough on Patrick's channel, but once I actually tried one at GC I got hooked. The thing plays incredibly well. Only think I don't like is the pickup cover as it got in my way
Actually tried one if these out at guitar center this past weekend and I was honestly surprised at how good it felt in hand (in my hands anyway) and how nice of a tone it could put out. Not saying it's for me because its not "but" it's a solid little bass and shouldn't get the snob nod. Some will love this bass and if they do I can get behind them. It's a neat little set up.
I played one of these at guitar center while testing out a pair of headphones and bought it on the spot. It’s so comfortable to play and sounds amazing. I can’t believe anyone hates this bass.

I love the look of the Jackson guitars. They have the totally 80s look down, and they're very unapologetic about it. I dig it.
It'll be a collector's item since they will become rare due to their unpopularity.

I purchased one! It has such an awesome tone, and the value will skyrocket, I got the fire glow finish only available at guitar center 😬🔥
Thanks for doing this review. I just bought one, which is my first Jackson. (And I actually bought the Orange 🍊) 😂 This video helped me out. I plan to shred this baby this weekend. We'll see how it goes. You just got another subscriber.
Thanks again, guys.
On my wish list for sure
I have one and love it best sounding bass I've had! And I think it looks awesome
cool, as always.
Who knew screwdrivers were the key for inter-dimensional travel?
@@TheBassChannel 🤣
That bass sound fantastic! And for $700?!?!? If the string spacing at the nut is at least as wide as a P-Bass, I’m down to try one in black as well. Great honest review. I’m now a subscriber.
Man that Bass sounds great Thanks for the review
Haven't played one yet, and when I first saw one, I hated the look of it. But, its growing on me, really digging the looks of it now, it just looks "right," to my eye. Really liking the metallic green one.
7:11 - 7:39 - Was that just an improvisation or is that existing song? Sound familiar, but I can't remember what it could be, Shazam doesn't help either. Anyway, great video and great bass too!
That was the part I wrote for my unreleased section of a “5 Bass Players, 1 Song” video.

The pickup position gives it the Rickenbacker sound - aprx 4 and 8 inches from the bridge respectively for the bridge and neck pickups. It sounds great. $700 great? Not sure.
I don’t need one, but I want one. 😄 I like the green the best.
I dig the Rickenbacker Vibe, I bought the same bass and love it
I own an 81 Rickenbacker and 5 fenders I love the Jackson
I love it. It's so ugly it's beautiful in a strange way.
Great review
The only thing that would interfere with me getting one if I were in the market for another bass is that I would prefer getting one that had at least one bucker if not two, after having owned for bass guitars that were all S’s.
good lord that sounds great
I actually played one the other day, I was pleseantly surprised. If you like it Get it!
The position of those two pickups seems closer to the neck, which will make a huge difference.
Versatile, plays great, so ugly it's cool! I want one! 😊👍
Only think I don't like is the pickup cover as it got in my way
Is it me or does this look like a short scale??
Actually tried one if these out at guitar center this past weekend and I was honestly surprised at how good it felt in hand (in my hands anyway) and how nice of a tone it could put out. Not saying it's for me because its not "but" it's a solid little bass and shouldn't get the snob nod. Some will love this bass and if they do I can get behind them. It's a neat little set up.
It sure sounds a lot like Geddy’s ‘Rick’ on ‘a Farewell to Kings’.
I put the P pup from EMG Frank Bello on my Franken P bass and I only connected just the volume pot. It sounds great.
Bridge looks like the classic Ric replacement, the Hipshot
Just a small note/fyi. Most Warwick basses have a 47"(!) radius
I have the 5 strings model wich is awesome, il love it.
Very cool...I want one Active
Picked one up I love it
Big Fan
I want a green and black one!
Sadly I'm poor.
I like itv a lot!!!
