He doesn't relate to you. Or care about you, if anything he views you as an inferior piece of shit to be used and disposed like a tool. That's the point of his character. If you "relate" to Rick you're delusional, because no one is like him. There exist no real human anywhere near his level, and almost all of his personality traits are a direct result of his intellect
+Genie Wishes If you look at Rick and say "I'd be his friend" then you're absolutely nothing like Rick. Rick would never intentionally make friends unless it was to further some goal of his. If you really do relate to him, though, then you should probably work on that. Rick is very messed up psychologically, he's self-destructive and a toxic burden on those around him. Given you don't have an interdimensional portal gun, it's going to be a lot harder for you to avoid consequences like he does.
+Abandoned Void I'm pretty sure when people say they relate to him. They obviously leave out the super genius who can access the infinite universe part. I for example, see a lot of myself in Rick. Not his genius or his sexual kinks. But his everyday personality and the way he carries himself along other people. (Although I am nowhere near as extreme as he is) My friend who introduced me to the show even agrees with me, as do my parents, who I introduced the show to. But not all of Rick's friendships are selfish. I for one, don't see what he stood to gain from befriending Bird-Person and actually accepting his marriage to Tammy. Especially considering his whole stance on weddings.
My big problem with Rick is that people see him having a near-perfect win record, when in reality he fails far more often than that. It's not a bad thing -- the show is good this way -- but idolizing Rick is kind of missing the point.
As the video kinda points out I think the idolization is more about his ability to roll with the punches and his confidence in facing his mistakes even if he continues to make him
Oh absolutely. My problem isn't that they like those qualities -- it's that they use it to justify having other aspects of Rick's behavior *themselves* -- people who literally aren't geniuses or able to roll with punches think they can be crappy people to other people because Rick does it. That isn't what makes Rick admirable.
Alexander McGrath This is why many fans are pissed about season 3 and blame the female writers because of course those white fedora guys who idolize Rick will blame women. They hate it because it shows that when you are like Rick, you still face consequences for your shitty behavior
People always love characters that bring humor and interesting plot conflict, but would probably hate that person in real life: ie: Beavis & Butthead, Rick, Dwight from the office... etc.
Short critisism: Please get a pop filter for your microphone, these loud "p" sounds are quite bothersome and don't fit a professional channel such as yours. Much love!
Bowl Of Carrots I feel a little bad now bro cuz I didn't mean to do any harm. This channel is amaaazing and you know it too, just felt like helping out a little ♥️ best to you all on this journey
Hey, hey, hey, hey! If you are doing animated stuff, have you thought about covering Light Yagami/Kira from Death Note? A lot of his charisma is drenched in reality and it'd be great if you could do an episode on him :) P.S - I'm talking about Light from the anime not the squealer from Netflix
Not exactly, he was turned into a sociopath by the Death Note (his reaction at the deaths of his first two victims clearly showed a lot of humanity). He still had a lot of upstanding qualities which were displayed when he revoked ownership. What we can learn is his magnetism comes from the black hole focus he had on his goal which was to create a world free of crime where he would reign as god. He was so obsessed with this and worked towards it in every way possible and in turn, got the attention of a lot of people (guys and girls alike) that he was totally indifferent to (which further caused attraction in Misa's case).. Though animated, lot of real life implications there. Even at the very end of the series, despite Light committing so many henious acts, I know people who swear by him and say that he had his reasons. Heck, I myself was rooting for him to succeed. So, there's gotta be something there. You usually want a sociopath to fail, Light essentially wasn't that.
I wanted him to fail so hard. People like him are the worst type of evil. They have brainwashed themself to believe their ideas are the ultimate answer and as such they must enforce them on everyone, one way or another. The kind of evil that believes they are the unsung hero.
Daring to say what is on your mind even if it could mean complete rejection is a quality I admire so much. It is so virtuous, it takes a lot of courage and integrity to even start doing such a thing.
I most admire Rick's ability to just say whats on his mind with out hesitation and how much of the time there aren't consequences when he does so; if there are, they're typically not that bad. I want that. In real life, you can have an angry mob outside your house with in minuets of saying the wrong thing, and there are no killbots to protect you.
I've never clicked on a video so fast before! I've always been interested in understanding how Rick has such a likable personality still while being a complete narcissist. Always wanted Charisma on Command to do an episode on him. Can't believe they did!!
Carl Jung's shadow self was more about directly facing the worst aspects of ourselves and then harnessing them selectively towards our advantage. you didnt directly mention that but this is also basically what rick is so good at doing. good assessment overall
Yo, Ben, another superb breakdown that has not only inspired me to actually check out Rick and Morty but illuminated myriad parallels between Rick and Raymond Reddington on The BlackList, a character who also commands respect with nearly all of the same moves employed by Tywin Lannister. Red/Spader is worthy of a video here on CoC, if you all don't already have one in the works
You could talk about bojack horseman, who is very similar to rick in many senses. Substance abuse, flawed character, and yet a very charismatic one. One of his defining traits is how he never censors himself, regardless the consequences
It's okay to like a character for these reasons. The fact that you find him cool or just are aware of his flaws and enjoy him for his complexity. The problem, which happens a lot in this fandom, is that people use Rick as a way to validate their behavior, when in reality the show doesn't aprove Rick as a person and he isn't supposed to be seen as someone you want to be, but the exact opossite
I just discovered this channel, already a couple of videos down, and as an actor seriously interested in human behaviour, it's incredible how much there is to learn in these videos.. Seriously amazing!
Good job on all your content about being charismatic and magnetic !!!! I was afraid of going to high school (1st year), but i followed all your tips and people just like me and find me magnetic. And the best part is i am not revealing too much about myself and all the girls want to know more about me. Following your tips works!!! well done on all your episodes.
You kind of missed 1 important characteristic: Rick kind of almost always lives the moment, enjoys it. Morty has also learned this now(after a long time): Never dwell in past, live your fu*king present, think a little bit about future but not much.
Nice and informative video! Always wondered why Rick can get away with nearly everything and get admired from the fans at the same time. Keep up the good work!
You know, I used to idolize characters like Rick during some of the worst parts of my life, because I was suffering, and I knew he had to, and I wanted someone to understand that. But the truth is, you can't use your own suffering as an excuse to hurt other people. You can't. Even if you're smart enough to know that there is billions of dimensions, and billions of versions of those people, or whether you don't, they're still people just like you. Rick sees everyone as replaceable, even himself, almost to the point where he doesn't care if the people around him live or die, but you never know. The person you love the most could die tomorrow, which is why you have to be good to the people in your life today.
This was very nice, but I am looking at it as a beginning of something bigger, like: Rick and Morty psychology. You can do more of Rick, and definitely Jerry, since he is weaker, and has much to learn from. Thanks for the video.
I see what you did there by saying "press the subscribe button, it just let youtube know that you want to see what we make". Nice implication of simple message without telling us how this help you. I like it :)
Trinity Vera Check out his interviews. His social skills are average...at best. He succeeds because he is a talented musician. Take out the money and the fame, and you're left with a guy that is fundamentally unlikeable. Extremely conceited without the charm that would otherwise make him pleasant to be around.
I just want to say the way you handled the "like and subscribe" part is the only reason Ive ever knowingly subscribed to a channel. You guys are really insightful and I love the work youve done. Thanks!
Why do you guys love my grandpa so much oh I forgot to say that my real grandpa is Rick Sanchez I'm not lying they have the same name my grandpa's full name is Ricardo Sanchez and my family calls him Rick thanks Dan Harmon.
7:28 I think that's been my problem all along, and I've only recently began to realize this. I've always been incredibly polite, but I've also always been soft spoken and quite about my own thoughts to the point where... I don't feel like anyone REALLY knows me.. where I feel like I must just be really boring. : (
Great video as always! My only small complaint is that 50 Shades of Grey is a shit-poor representation of BDSM. It glorifies an abusive relationship and not a healthy kinky one.
we like Rick because how he speaks, his dark jokes, his atitude, and how badass he is. not to mention that he doesn't give a fuck about anything even in the darkest time and situation (For the most part); though he does care about his family atleast slightly even if he's hiding it.
Interesting that you noted that opening up to other people about your human flaws makes them feel more connected to you. Within the last year, I suffered from panic attacks and anxiety. I tried to seal myself in this box of the perfect functional human being. Just me trying to do that added to my panic and stress, so i stopped and said if i was honest and confronted the elephant in the room there would be less pressure for me to try and 'hide'. So i started talking to strangers about it, if i was in a situation where my panic was arising I'd say "hey, don't mind me right now; if i seem off or not interested in what you're saying its because i have a panic disorder, and am trying to cope with it." Surprisingly enough, that enabled some actually deep conversation with them, which i'd like to think made us both feel comfortable at the end. They actually felt comfortable enough to tell me about their daughter that goes through anxiety too, or even try to ask question on what a panic attack is like, or situations they've been in that caused them deep dread in their life. it was a very heartwarming experience.
Amazing video as always, guys. But maybe next time, maybe distance the mic a little bit to prevent the sound of gusts of air being caught? Just my two cents. :)
I'm watching you're channel as a kid and in school I get everything I want it's awesome and it will help me become a entrepreneur when I'm older thanks so
Dude, Rick is an alcoholic psychopath. There might not be any consequences to us, but, hoooo boy, there are some pretty friggin huge consequences to his actions. Like cosmic horror type consequences. But like Rick says, "It's best not to think about it." Anyway, what I mean is that we like Rick because he's a cartoon. So if anyone thinks that being an alcoholic psychopath is cute in real life then lemme just say to go ahead on that path and see what real life is going to do to you.
Totally agree! I thought I said that in the video, that it's fun because it's a cartoon we can enjoy while knowing there's no consequences. I definitely agree with you so hopefully that came through!
Yeah so... I rewatched the whole video and, yeah, you pretty much address that right off the bat. Then you kind of reinforce it throughout the rest of the video. So... I don't know what I was talking about. Not my proudest post. Actually, I'm getting a bit of sinking feeling about everything else I posted today. I appreciate the reply, though, so if you could look closely at this..... **bright flash**
An important detail that a lot of these character analysis fail to mention and it's VERY important: It's fiction. Fiction doesn't follow the same rules that reality, and in Rick's case is clear. Some character traits that are interesting and charismatic in fiction are not good at all in reality. And also, there's the fact that because he's the protagonist, people are inclined to like him and root for him, using his virtues to excuse his flaws. It's like Breaking Bad. At the end of the series, Walter was clearly and without a doubt a total villain and a megalomaniac, but still people hated on Skyler for wanting to protect her family from that man. And it's because we followed the struggle of Walter during the whole series and to that point we all were attached to him more than anyone. But he was the absolute villain.
I think Rick is very interesting to watch for the reasons you said, but, a lot of people in real life would struggle to make friends with him/dislike him. I've met people similar to rick, very intelligent, not much filter, but they tend to be on their own a lot, and a lot of the time people don't feel comfortable around them.
Hey Charlie! I'm not sure you will see this but I REALLY hope you will! You have a tattoo on your chest, right? A tattoo that says "Courage is the key to freedom" or something like that. Could you please talk a bit about that? I am really really REALLY curious about how you view courage. Thank you for everything, btw! You're awesome!!!
Wow, they just keep coming! Another killer vid! Can you please do one on Cosmo Kramer from Seinfeld? One of the most coolest and lovable characters to have graced the Television screen in my opinion.
I like rick because I always strive to be a "genius" even though i'm of pretty average intellect. I have a lot of good invention ideas but I struggle to create prototypes. I also have a dark view of mankind and love and all that, the same as Rick does, but he's so much better at communicating it. He's a mix of who I am and who I want to be. He goes on these rants and I swear he's pulling it all straight from my mind, but if I were to try to explain it it would come out way wrong. I think a lot of people feel the way he does, but like me, they either can't really communicate such thoughts as well as Rick, or simply hold them in in fear of being judged or disliked. Most of your video was pretty spot on tbh.
It seems like this video is reaching to be tied into Charisma on Command. Maybe if it was more specific, like why people like anti-heroes (Rick Sanchez, Walter White, Donald Trump, etc.) world work.
Rick is liked even in his world cause he is basically God..would he save you? would he destroy your universe? Would he listen to your plea? Was he messing with you all this time? Classic puppy experiment.
Lord Sesshoumaru yeah he acts like he's a god but whenever he shows weakness or a human side his fanboys get angry because they don't want to see someone like Rick face consequences
Fantastic explanation. Rick allows relatability to each one of us by being a strong Arch Type while showing his flaws without care. Many actors have the same attitude.
The video was very interesting, and you made many cool points. However, I think the majority reason people support Rick, aside from his entertainment value, is because of Morty. If it was just Rick in the show, it wouldn't work at all, despite these qualities he posesses. We support Morty, and want him to succeed and grow, and he is able to do that through Rick. If Rick didn't have the relationship with Morty in the show that he does, he would likely be seen as an antagonistic character, or at least an unlikable one. The biggest reason people support Rick is because Morty cares about him, and he does right by Morty whenever he needs to. At least it's my idea of it.
Could your next video be: "How to make friends"? I'm asking for a friend.
Akash Saha I'll be your friend😀😀
I'm asking for myself, cos I have no friends.
😥🔫
you don't ask for friendship
Kiko Kat its a meme you dip
"Well let me check my powers and weaknessess: ability to do anything, BUT only whenever I want..." that alone is the only reason rick should be loved.
House M.D. is another perfect example
House was sexy asf
As I was listening to this video I thought of House as well =)
Yes! and Diogenes of Sinope (?
We like him, because he isn't being that way to us. No one would like someone who treated them like Rick treats other people. He is just entertainment
I'd be his friend. I relate to the way he acts and the way he feels.
He doesn't relate to you. Or care about you, if anything he views you as an inferior piece of shit to be used and disposed like a tool. That's the point of his character. DarkLordXerinic He gained an ally in the fight against the galactic government and a drinking buddy. It absolutely was selfish
My big problem with Rick is that people see him having a near-perfect win record, when in reality he fails far more often than that. It's not a bad thing -- the show is good this way -- but idolizing Rick is kind of missing the point.

People who think that haven't watched Rick Potion °9, his failures snowballing so much they had to outright switch to another reality.
Everybody likes Rick bicuz he know how to get shwiftyyy
ah yes, a man of culture
Can’t believe I liked this comment. I’m furious
People always love characters that bring humor and interesting plot conflict, but would probably hate that person in real life: ie: Beavis & Butthead, Rick, Dwight from the office... etc.
I'd love Rick in real life! Maybe....
I would like Rick in real life. I agree with his views in life and the way he handles things, I also relate to him.
Genie Wishes believe me you'd be annoyed with him in an hour.
Absolutely. As much as I love the Joker, I wouldn't be too keen on knowing he could randomly snap and torture me to death at any moment.
Abandoned Void Rick wouldn't kill you. On purpose. Maybe he'd get blackout drunk and blow up you and your planet.
If I had a dime for every comment on my channel someone said "you sound like morty"....
Eyy wassup morty, I like your videos
I just did a quick comment search, and there are 26 Morty references in the past month. $2.60 cha-ching
Practical Psychology another passive income stream for you! :D
I see what you did there. Great way to attract viewers, eh?
Similar audiences, relative comment, invokes curiosity, quality content too... yep perfect;)
Short critisism: Please get a pop filter for your microphone, these loud "p" sounds are quite bothersome and don't fit a professional channel such as yours. Much love!
Just bought one today! Thanks for your feedback, it'll be better in future videos.
tysk most people dont notice until you make it noticed. Private messages are a thing
Yeah you're probably right it wasn't as bad, I'm just nitpicking cuz I'm an audio guy
Andrew Paul I always notice and it pains me so bad. I'm glad he spoke out
Bowl Of Carrots I feel a little bad now bro cuz I didn't mean to do any harm. This channel is amaaazing and you know it too, just felt like helping out a little ♥️ best to you all on this journey
One simple expression to sum up this video, "he simply doesnt give a fuuuuuuuuuuck"
... But he does when it really matters!
because he's Rick
coolskeleton 95 Wubba Lubba Dub Dub!!!
Rick became a sociopath simple as that🤗
Fr. I never knew a cartoon character could be so attractive
@TheFnames Eh, I like different Ricks. Rookie Rick, Evil Rick, surgeon Rick.
Charisma on Command and Rick and Morty? Never clicked on a video faster.
Does Rick make anybody else wanna be Mad Scientist?
Me
No. I like failing at math 😂 it makes me who I am
Also he has the most rapport breaking vocal tonality ever. That's another reason he is so well respected.

I see Rick and Morty, I click. I'm a simple man.
I admire how often you guys often, I struggle with once a week lol.
Successful Minds ...I admire how often you often....🤔
Successful Minds Seems legit. 👍
Man, I want to come home to the impossible sensation of my own completion. Be a simple man and simply click on Rick and Morty.
good boy!
"I admire how often you often" - successful minds, 2017
Be honest 95% of the time. It takes strength to show weakness. Who knows, you just might learn something about yourself.
I've never clicked on a video so fast before! I've always been interested in understanding how Rick has such a likable personality still while being a complete narcissist. Always wanted Charisma on Command to do an episode on him. Can't believe they did!!
~ Awesome! Hope you liked it :-)
"I love you so much it burns!"
Well our love for Rick goes way beyond this..
Its almost like asking why everyone loves Cartman from South Park
Do Gordon Ramsey
do people like gordon ramsey?
This is actually a great idea!
I don't like him too much.
Ramsay*
I love him.

You kind of missed 1 important characteristic: Rick kind of almost always lives the moment, enjoys it. Morty has also learned this now(after a long time): Never dwell in past, live your fu*king present, think a little bit about future but not much.
Some people don't respect a person who puts actions before words, and thats the simple truth.
Rick does love his family..thats what makes him different from all the other "ricks"
You sure about that? Also what if he's just noticeably more faster and smarter?
Nice and informative video! Always wondered why Rick can get away with nearly everything and get admired from the fans at the same time. Keep up the good work!
~ Glad you're finding it informative! Will definitely keep going :-)
Do a Batman personality breakdown!!

The best description of the popularity of Rick I've ever heard, now when people ask me why Rick is so popular, I'll point them to this video.
~ Awesome! Thanks :-)
Thank you for putting it in a way that i couldn't figure out how to do.

Stripekit idk, a lot of people find him annoying
Trinity Vera well then what not do.
Trinity Vera Check out his interviews. His social skills are average...at best. He succeeds because he is a talented musician. calohtar i know
Trinity Vera Ya I'm backing up what you're saying. He's a guy who's high off his own fumes. Lucky for him, he got a lotta fumes.
I just want to say the way you handled the "like and subscribe" part is the only reason Ive ever knowingly subscribed to a channel. You guys are really insightful and I love the work youve done. Thanks!
6:06 I love how BDSM was so casually thrown in there 😂
^^
Patrick D its true though
“Not always liking someone but still loving them for who they are even with their flaws” wow
Why do you guys love my grandpa so much oh I forgot to say that my real grandpa is Rick Sanchez I'm not lying they have the same name my grandpa's full name is Ricardo Sanchez and my family calls him Rick thanks Dan Harmon.

Its hilarious that a white dude named his main character after a Latino

Great video as always! My only small complaint is that 50 Shades of Grey is a shit-poor representation of BDSM. It glorifies an abusive relationship and not a healthy kinky one.
I agree! A generic picture of a whip, rope or blindfold would represent BDSM just fine.
Exactly! Though I don't blame CoC for the mistake. 50 SoG fooled everyone.
we like Rick because how he speaks, his dark jokes, his atitude, and how badass he is. not to mention that he doesn't give a fuck about anything even in the darkest time and situation (For the most part); though he does care about his family atleast slightly even if he's hiding it.

bayobayo i will
Just ordered a new mic stand and pop filter. Appreciate the feedback, thanks for watching!
Benjamin Altman your not me
Hey, no prob. :D
I'm watching you're channel as a kid and in school I get everything I want it's awesome and it will help me become a entrepreneur when I'm older thanks so
oooh we've got an intellectual
The casual mention of BDSM lol
As always, wonderful video!
Dude, Rick is an alcoholic psychopath. There might not be any consequences to us, but, hoooo boy, there are some pretty friggin huge consequences to his actions. Like cosmic horror type consequences. But like Rick says, "It's best not to think about it."
Anyway, what I mean is that we like Rick because he's a cartoon.
I love the show but the fanbase is quite cancerous
WUBBA WUBBA LUBBA DUBBA!
Johnny Threefour I hope you meant to type it that wrong
the fan-base consists of mostly people that idolize Rick Sanchez cause in real life he's everything they're too shy to be
Well, I'd say that EVERY fanbase is quite cancerous. Especially when it comes to cartoons.
That’s all fan bases to be honest
This video in your channel is the most useful, thanks I need this
this is amazing!! hahah
Awesome video!!! Do some more video on Rick and Morty!
*DO A MARLON BRANDO BREAKDOWN*
light kira yessss
Make him an offer he can't refuse
I think Rick is very interesting to watch for the reasons you said, but, a lot of people in real life would struggle to make friends with him/dislike him. I've met people similar to rick, very intelligent, not much filter, but they tend to be on their own a lot, and a lot of the time people don't feel comfortable around them.
Do more Rick and Morty.
I love how I started watching not expecting to be impressed by your analysis but ended up learning something from it! Great job!
Loving the vids great job Ben
RICK AND M M MOOORTYY BYAATCH.
Very well done video! I'm glad you talked about how powerful opening yourself up and being honest is. More people need to realize that!

Wubba lubba dub dub!!!!

you okay there duderino if you need a friend because that phrase emphasizes much inner pain
Wow, they just keep coming! Another killer vid! Can you please do one on Cosmo Kramer from Seinfeld? One of the most coolest and lovable characters to have graced the Television screen in my opinion.
Best show.
Haven't watched the full video yet, but I already love you for making it :D
Team Evil Morty
was waiting for this one!!
I actually do enjoy those human moments more, but more than his abilities I meant more in terms of how he uses them, one just doesnt get him.
Seems like evil Morty to me
Nuh
Your channel picks very interesting characters and make it easy to understand them, thank you for great content
~ Glad you're liking our content!
this doesn't apply to me I hate him
Diarminator Fallon
Reason?
Fantastic explanation. Rick allows relatability to each one of us by being a strong Arch Type while showing his flaws without care. Many actors have the same attitude.
PLEASE make more vids on Rick & Morty
What's there more to do? How to not be a Morty/Jerry?
at some point, they could address Morty's development
Please dont.
I mean you can but
NOT just because its a popular show... stay on topic Do no go off on tangents and into pop culture rabbit holes.
Never would have thought A Cartoon show would amp up my Existential Crisis. this show is Gold. but also I hate it lol
Rick is the type of person you don't want to have a discussion with, unless you are a therapist.
12 year olds watch this
Nice name m8

"You're a better man than me, Rick. I'm healthy enough to admit that." - Detox!Morty
.......My sentiments exactly.
50 shades of grey is NOT bdsm. Just sayin.
lovely video though ;)
Pia Klancar hahahahaha you're funny
Well, it could be considered BDSM if you force someone to read it.
