Divinity Original Sin 2 on Switch: The Perfect Complement To The PC Version?
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 6 фев 2025
- It's another impossible port made possible by some careful pruning back of settings on Switch - leaving a decent experience, albeit with some big frame-rate drops. The main plus point for this version, though, is its save-sharing with the Steam version, letting you continue your game while on the move. Tom breaks down the pros and cons of developer Larian Studios' conversion here. Note: the controls here inherit the layout of the existing PS4/Xbox One versions.

Joke's on you, my computer is shit so my PC already looks like the Switch version lmao
What are your specs? Cause I was wondering which version I should get, and my laptop just barely seems to meet the minimum specs with its MX130
@@Fm25duytorsch get the switch version if you haven't already. Its decent.
@@Fm25duytorsch you should scape by on that provided you are happy with low resolution and low graphics
@@bobitysteve9509 yeah I did that. Well, it's always a give and take between Switch and PC, well, with PC ports anyway. Graphics aren't great, but I'm okay with it
My pc/laptop I dough could handle it at all
Honestly, the cutbacks in this are visible, but way less obvious than in other ports. Everything is lower res, yet almost everything is there - including most of the vegetation. That's pretty decent.
They should have shown the comparison against PS4/Xbone. In that case, it really just looks like a lower resolution version of the game. Showing it against a PC running at 60 fps with maxed out graphics is just unfair. They even compared Switch load times to a PC with an SSD...
@@darkgod5555 Yeah even more over kill than comparing the Switch version of games to the Xbox One X lol.
@@darkgod5555 switch is the only one that allows you to share save data between PC and itself that's probably why the PC is what is being compared with because that's what you're going to be playing it on and switching to the switch from.
Yeah so heads up, I'm 35+ hours in and the game definitely gets a bit more wonky. Loading your saves takes considerably longer, the battle camera sometimes forgets to follow the action, the UI occasionally fails to display something or displays it too long, and it has crashed 3 times in the last five hours compared to just once in that first thirty. Hopefully it doesn't get any worse because it's bearable for now.
How's it nowadays? Any patches
Man the amount of ports the switch gets makes for a huge library, just need a switch pro to get better frame rates.
Being a PC gamer.. i cant describe how much this console make me fap... damn... its portable.. you can play on the TV... and the games are PC Gems.... all on the go! i dont care if its not comparable with Xbox or Playstation.. for really intense gaming i have a PC... but sometimes i want to travel with my game! this is perfect.. i hope Nintendo keep this path with future consoles... is my wet dream come true... (i really love portable consoles)
switch pro would be great. but even a (portable!) Switch pro will get it's games downgraded graphical wise. So it's a blast as it is., pro or not so pro.
@@holymegadave You are no pc gamer but ordinary nintendo fanboy. We pc gamers are playing on big screen/tv with 60fps and 4k for many years (also zillions of visual effects that you can not imagine). Switch is where we have been 15 years ago.

Tip for any new gamers: Pick one of the preset characters and change their traits and look. It may be tempting to go for a completely custom character but your experience will be worse since you will be missing out on the amazing characters they created.
Deifnitely this. I restarted because your custom character has no, well, character but all the presents are amazing.
It still looks very good on Switch. Amazing.
This one was one of my most requested ports back when the switch launched, almost gave up hope.
Glad for you then
The switch really is the embodiment of "gameplay over graphics" it's showing what make great games truly great games, yes, we all love great looking games, but it's showing that that's not all that holds them up, I love my PC and my switch, and the save syncing for this is such a good thing, love to see more of this
I prefer the PC version since the graphics are AMAZING for this game. didn't know it had save syncing. that is amazing.
You do realise the gameplay is the SAME on PC as it is on PC, right?

In contrast with the garbage fire that was the pillars port, this is excellent despite the limitations.

@@Bigdaddymittens The bugs. It is still unplayable.
@@Bigdaddymittens after reaching Caed Nua there's an ever increasing chance that your save will become corrupted and areas start getting replaced with grey screens and crashes while loading become more and more frequent -crashes while saving too. Worse, the first patch they put out a month after release was a clumsy band aid that only fixes the text temporarily while hitting the framerate each time it corrects itself.

I didn't have the time to be tied to a computer or tv to finish this game before, as much as I loved it. I've been playing it religiously in handheld mode since the day it launched on Switch. It's honestly impressive in handheld mode and plays great. I couldn't be happier to have this huge game portable so I can actually play and finish it! This is a seriously impressive port.
This game takes its place as my favorite RPG of all time! As far as computer games go. It is quite amazing they made this on a handheld at all. Quite the technical achievement! If you haven't already pick this game up it's a masterpiece! Music, gameplay, graphics, atmosphere, story, voice acting, it's all there. I have never seen such a dark fantasy world.

I mean, it's turn-based, so I don't really mind the drops personally.
Uboa Noticed You same. If it was a racer it would be a problem
Agreed. Who would complain about the frame rate of a chess match?
Except that you will spend a lot of time exploring, and walking through the map. And moreover during the battle there will be magics, fire, rain so the frame rates will be lower. Anyway you will only spend at least 80H on the game, it's not that long.....
Nah this framerate is unacceptable. It's not a chess match...
@@kirbyjoestar6596 80 hours is quite substantial though. A lot of games don't even very half that.

Since every switch game has to be compromised somehow, can you make a video on what would be the best way to implement a "Pro" Switch? like what would be the best cpu/gpu combo to make actual improvements?
Switch Pro would propably need to be a home console only wouldn't it?
We finally got a Switch with decent battery life and low heat development.
I don't think i could go back to a console with only 1 or 2 hours of battery life
Makes sense that the switch pro would be not portable, and just a console under your tv but much more capable than the stock switch.
If you own an exploitable Switch, you can essentially turn it into a Switch Pro. I don't pirate games (unfortunataly many people use CFW exclusively for this reason), but I do up the GPU and CPU clocks to Docked speeds whilst in Handheld mode on my games. Makes a massive difference to performance and rez and coupled with my Switch battery case, I still get good battery life. As long as you're not pirating or using cheats Nintendo won't ban you from online
That video would be very interesting, but probably only will frustrate all of us that are waiting for a 1080p 60fps portable machine (with some compromises of course, but still infinitely better than actual switch). Some day I guess.

I am considering getting this when a physical version releases. I already have it for PS4 (Pro) and played a bit and enjoyed it, but probably a better fit for my Switch in terms of devoting some time.
I'm mostly just curious about how that Oil Field fight runs, the only place in the entire game that it dropped on my PC and to like 40fps as well.
It crashed my game lmao
I turned off auto save so it wouldn’t hitch. I was making ample use of quick save like any other cRPG anyways.
I have played Divinity 2 on the PS4 quite a bit and the only thing I was hoping for in the switch version is the ability to use touch screen controls for the inventory management. Like being able to just drag and drop items from one character to the next. Is that possible?
Omg! If this had local co-op on switch.. this would be a great table-top party game.

Playing it now, both an awesome game and a very impressive port.
Well I mean for switch players that never played Divinity 2 on PC the visuals won't be that big a problem it's like eating amazing foreign food on vacation and coming back to eat the not so great version home with immense disappointment but if you never ate that food the version home will taste heavenly in your eyes.
You did an amazing work here BLITWORKS! . Yes,they made the port and yes, if people would put some effort on looking for real fonts, the creators would have the credit they deserve.
Great game, enjoyed it on PC
Yes agree I dont mid drops on turnbased games, thou I have identified two issues, cloud save for me just wont really work to a point I had to submit a bug report to Larian, second ever more important is on switch the limited zoom out level, on Forth Joy entering the refugee camp you have to speak to a NPC above in a cave to let down a rope, but you dont see the NPC really due to limited zoom out, that has a impact and for new players could be a show stopper on game progression, I did as well encounter a drop below 10FPS, when my screen was full of fire with 10+ enemies, but that is a extrem, overall, I'm very happy to play the game on switch :D
I feel like there is a potential for more Switch Overclocked videos - 14 out of 15 best selling games from September were third parties, some of which are exclusives and don't necessarily run flawlessly. Such videos would be hits and would feed discussions/speculations about a potential Switch successor
It's likely that Sony and/or Microsoft wouldn't _allow_ them to do cross-saves on those platforms, but that will most likely stop me from the almost certain purchase I would have made of this port. I just can't stomach starting a game over after like 80 hours. And I'm sure I'm FAR from the only one.
0:29 I like how Tom always says "Ken" instead of "can".
He also said 'dynamite resolution' instead of 'dynamic' in this. I don't know about you, but to me 'dynamite resolution' sounds pretty great.
I clicked so quick. Not because of the game but because you guys are awesome 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Can you guys, do an analysis on Greedfall, I think such a game deserves as much attention as possible. Thank you always for the best analysis and technical insights on technologies in gaming
I've played for a couple hours so far, seems promising. Just hate the voice acting audio being so disconnected from the characters animations. Graphics aren't great or anything, but good enough to support the fun combat & questing.
Hope it can continue to be this enjoyable throughout the game.
Yes, compared to the PC version this isn't great. Of course it's not, how could it be? But , on its own, as a portable RPG, it's pretty effing awesome. I've been enjoying my time with it so far and I see no reason why that would change. The big fps drops are a bit sad, but in a turn based game, they're more annoying than intrusive, really. I can live with that for the tradeoff of taking it with me everywhere I go. Now I only need to find the time to keep chipping away at it amidst the current assault of game releases on Switch and elsewhere.
Just to be annoying: Divinity 2 is a completely different game from Original Sin 2
Both are fantastic
This is a direct relation to the first game which means were used to. So taking the game to a skyrim approach was weird and a bold move considering there are better games in that genre
I was not sure whether to get the PS4 or the Switch version and finally bought the latter one. No regrets, of course technically it's inferior to the PS4 version but it's so much more comfortable to play the Switch version on the go when it comes to these massive games.
Amazing work from larian!
Divinity 2 is also on ipadOS. weather its better or worse than Switch is up to you
Been playing it since release, loving it.
I started a whole new playthrough (abandoning my 100+ hour current one) without mods just I could cross save from anywhere lol
Great that more gamers get to experience this amazing game. Sadly a bit too late for me though, it's a nice addition to playing the game but I've already done so and have no intention of replaying it yet again.
the controls seem the same as other console ports. its not something Switch Specific.
Love the steam save sync feature! Makes it a perfect PC pairing.
Since this game is already on iPad. Would you do an iPad performance review?
@9:57 Divinity II is an entirely different game.

Completely unrelated to this game but you guys should do a video on the Grid Autosport port too. It has both quality and performance modes and the latter feels great but I’d be curious to see if it’s actually a steady 60fps.
I bought the physical version on switch
An analysis of dead by daylight on switch would be interesting when it will be released
LOL what I want to know is how it performs in the battle outside the oil mines. Even my PC struggles once
all this fire starts spreading EVERYWHERE!
I wouldn't call this much of an extra selling-point for Switch if you have the PC version. Starting a new run knowing you won't be using mods takes commitment. And the cross-saves feature is mostly going to be for singleplayer users, save for the rare exception when all players own both platforms. The host can cross over to Switch, play by themselves and then switch back to PC but that would defeat the point of a story-driven co-op RPG.
Could someone answer me do you get the dlc- if you get the Divine Ascension dlc for if you buy the definitive edition on Xbox 1 or if there is a way to get that dlc on Xbox 1
I looked and did not see the dlc on Xbox live buy guide

Keep on the good work!
But what about split screen co op?! hehe the fact the switch has 2 controllers, it'd be interesting to co op on the go :D
Unfortunately local multiplayer got cut in this version
just play it on steam deck. a LOT cheaper like $7 on sale for BOTH Divinity 1 and 2 and an order of magnitude better in visuals and performance.
I think these resolutions/AA solutions are getting too blurry on switch. I hope that somewhere down the line switch games can get some backwards compatibility that enhances resolution on a future system
The easiest path is to just enable the docked mode on a undocked switch with a better screen.
Sacrifices for portable play
pick your poison
@Kool Klux Klan not for 400 bucks they dont.
I'd personally only play a lot of these switch ports in handheld, the blurry resolution is far less of a hindrance then. If you want them in all their glory, you'll need to act like it and play the games elsewhere.
Anyone denying how awesome it is to take this game anywhere with you just doesn't get it though. And that's fine. I'mma enjoy it regardless lol.
@Kool Klux Klan name one device as portable, affordable, and supported as the switch is and I'll take your condescending bs seriously. instead of talking shit on each comment maybe say something worth a damn.
@Digital Foundry When you guys will make a tech analysis of GRID Autosport on Switch?
I've Steam streamed Divinity Original Sin 1 and 2 to my Vita, plays perfectly.
I like Digital Foundry vids as the reviews are shown unbiased, both pros & cons are laid out for all to see unlike some reviewers which i really hate. This is my 2cents
This isn't a review. This is the accompanying video to the tech analysis over on Eurogamer, which has full written reviews for the games.
What reviews?
Amazing companies making the best ports yet again
How do I do this please haha. (I'll figure it out, very excited to hear i can go back and forth)
Why these developers don't support Gyro to simulate a mouse? While not as precise is far more close to it than an analog stick. Not to mention in portable mode there's the touch screen.
Anyway any game that uses a mouse in it's original platform should use the gyroscope when ported to the Switch.
That's not something I've ever thought of, but certainly isn't a bad idea at all. I'm typically not a fan of motion controls, but I find Switch's to be pretty accurate. I probably wouldn't buy a game like this in which that was my *only* option, but it would be cool for people to be able to choose.
You should post this on their Twitter. It's a good idea.
Sad that the only way to provide usefull feedback is through Twiter... Thanks for the reply thought. >:)
You guys should do a follow-up to Warframe. The recent update has given a graphical upgrade on all platforms by switching over to PBR rendering.
I'm torn between Switch and PS4 for this! I'll probably play ~20% portable on Switch, and I'm wondering if that tradeoff is worth it for the visual/performance cut.
Wait so I can jump between the switch version and the Steam version? Like non stop on the same save??
yup, exactly.

This game and the first one are some of the best RPGs of all time
Why is game limited to 3 cores? Thought it had 4 cores available?
Johnny - Huh?
4th is system only, all games on switch are limited to 3
Franz IV - Are you guys talking about the game itself or the power of the Nintendo Switch console?
@@NYCJoeBlack The switch itself and by that also about his question why this game only uses 3 cores.
Switch has 4 cores but only 3 are avaiable to games, one is only for nintendo operating system in background. So Johnnys idea was a bit right and wrong.
Franz IV - Okay, thanks man. Appreciate the break down. I assume that the 4th Core is used for the Nintendo Switch Operation System much like some of the 32GB of storage space is used for the Operating System?
I used to be big on home console and handheld text, but after we stop judging a systems power by how many bits a console has, for example, the SONY PS2 is an 128-bit system, I did not keep up. If we would have used bits as a measurement of console power, then the PS3/360 would be 256-bits and the PS4:ONE would be 512-bit systems.
I have a high end PC and Switch Lite. Would this game be super badass portably, or do graphics framerates and mouse and keyboard truly matter for this game?
I bought it on Switch last week and it's a great port. The game has been patched since this video and the graphics and framerate are good. The only noticeable dips is when there are multiple explosions on screen. Beyond that it's the perfect companion to the PC version. I have zero regrets buying it 👍
I guess it's about what you're used to. I have a gaming PC that can run this game maxed at 4K and 60 FPS, and I also have a Switch, and I have mixed feelings about it. On one hand, I'm super happy that Switch gamers can now experience what is undoubtedly THE most expansive and complex RPG on that system. No other game on Switch even comes close to the sheer variety of crazy tactics you can perform in this game. On the other hand, for someone used to PC graphics fidelity, the Switch version looks like ass, I'm sorry to say. Rumours suggest that a more powerful version of the Switch is in the works. As soon as it's officially announced, I'll be selling my Switch in preparation for it.
I have a Switch, but glad i bought the iPad version for my M1 12.9 Ipad Pro :)
The price for it is crazy
I imagine there's no way to do cross-saves with the GOG version? Fuck me for going DRM free, I guess.
(Turns out if you own the Steam version, you can move saves from GOG to Steam, then from Steam to Switch but... If I'm buying the game twice, why would I buy it a third time just for cross saves? Oh well. Maybe in the future they'll work out something with Galaxy's cloud system.)
Gtk I can go back and forth from my steam deck to my switch, since I mostly leave the deck at home and almost always have my switch with me.
