I was 20 years old. When a friends cousin bought a 302 Boss Mustang. The yellow paint was faded a bit. The black louvers were a little rusty and pitted. The interior was black comfort weave. A Hurst T handled close ratio 4-speed. 290 Hp and 290 torque. We were partying that winter night. The beer ran out. No snow but cold. His cousin said who's got beer money. I will take them to the liquor store. I spoke up and said I'll buy. If you take the Boss. So we headed out to his mustang. Got in and started to drive without warming the Boss up. I told him if he ever wanted sell the car. To let me know. I was working but driving a pick up truck and wanted some thing that handled with power. So as we turned the corner. He stood on the gas. As the RPM' s got higher that 302 came alive. He shifted from 2nd to 3rd power shifting with the gas pedal to the floor. The tires squealed with delight. He shifted from 3rd to 4th. Moving along at a good clip. When all the sudden the engine threw a rod out of the block
A fire started and smoke and the smell of anti freeze went into our noses. The Boss died a horrible death right there up the street from the liquor store. We coasted to the side of the road. We walked the short distance to the store. Where a pay phone sat on a concrete pad to the left of the entrance. I bought beer and he called the house for his cousin to come get our cold Ass's. As we passed the Boss Mustang. Smoke was coming out from under the car. The Boss was no more. Never got the chance to buy it from him. He sold it cheap to a garage owner. THAT's THE LAST I saw of it! But for one brief shining moment. The Boss was at the top of its game! It's a true story. Shawn
