The 1979 to 1992 period was a tumultuous era marked by global upheaval, particularly for Pakistan. Neighboring Afghanistan and Iran experienced seismic shifts with the Soviet invasion and the Islamic Revolution, respectively. Pakistan responded by developing its nuclear capabilities, culminating in a successful test in the early 1980s.
The region's tensions escalated in the mid-1980s when India launched Operation Brasstacks, a massive military exercise widely perceived as a veiled threat. Pakistan's nuclear deterrence played a crucial role in defusing the crisis. Despite supporting the Afghan Mujahideen, Pakistan faced international pressure through the Pressler Amendment. However, due to the Soviet occupation, the US granted waivers. Post-Soviet withdrawal, sanctions were reimposed.
The 1990 Iraqi invasion of Kuwait further destabilized the region. Pakistan stood with its long-term ally, Saudi Arabia.
In this episode, I discussed with Captain Adeeb uz Zaman Safvi how the Pakistan Navy navigated these complex geopolitical challenges to safeguard the country's maritime frontiers.
Indeed it was an explosive era and our forces came out more strong and confident
