      You better get used to delays because that is what alphas are all about finding things that they don't know are broken, if you can't handle delays and bugs I highly suggest you skip the alpha and find a finished game to occupy your time while this one is made.
      Sometimes they think they are on track and then suddenly a problem pops up which causes a chain reaction this is very common in alpha testing and there will be plenty more delays before this game goes live.

      Isn’t 10 years decent for a small studio with big ambitions? I would say they were delayed by at least two years with the unreal engine 5 upgrade, but personally I see it as a good decision as UE5 will probably be at maturity around their full release and UE4 would’ve been just really outdated

      Dale a traducir comentario, creo que no jugaste un mmo en tu vida, la media de creación de un MMO sin ser a medio acabar como salen ahora , es de 10 años , un ejemplo el wow se comenzó a producir a la salida del warcraft 1 , te parece mucho tiempo por lo sigues desde el dia 1 y por lo general los estudios no dan informacion hasta que le quedan poco meses.

    • @liarwithagun
      @liarwithagun Месяц назад +2

      10 years (2025 RELEASE) is in the range of typical development time for an MMO. Most games just don't say anything publicly until they are already more than 50% done to announce and then go quiet for a few more years until they nearly release. AoC has been regularly communicating with the public since the start (which was promised in the kickstarter). This gives the impression that their development is really slow in comparison to a 'normal' game when they aren't even in realm of 'extremely slow to develop' yet.
      Maybe they will end up being slower than other games (probable IMO), but it literally hasn't been long enough that we can say the time in development is atypically long or completely unacceptable for an MMO.
      Now as soon as we hit 12 years in development (2027), that's when their development would have been atypically slow.
      But the public doesn't really know or care about all that. All most people see is that normally they hear about a game from devs for the first time and then 1-4 years later it releases. Then Ashes shows up and doesn't follow that trend (because they are trying a completely different public communication strategy they are calling 'open development') and so it feels extremely, unacceptably slow to those people.

      @@coldsteel865 Well, I guess I can understand people who have been disappointed a lot recently getting a little bent out of shape, but the big picture is that a 1 month delay is nothing significant compared to how well the Alpha2 goes. In the old days once you get to what we called the Integration test, you used to start pulling programmers off the project, because you couldn't keep them busy. You left some of the team on the project, that would be the people supporting and enhancing it, but a lot of developers would move onto a new project.
      Now, the game industry is slightly different and there is a lot more sideways development required than in a business application, but Alpha2 is cresting the hill, it is downhill from here, as long as Alpha2 goes reasonably well. I would argue playtesting shouldn't be a thing until a game is nearly feature complete. Allowing people to *play* the game while in dev sends the wrong messages to the community, one of which is the inability for the devs to change directions or make big changes without major pushback. Hell, even decisions like delays can be made with more flexibility if the player base at large isn't so invested in *highly turbulent* design that often goes changed or entirely gutted/replaced. Game devs should be transparent with us; tell us how things are going and what they are thinking. But should not be porous; allowing the player base to engage, directly, in the game's development.

    I agree with this topic and how you present it. So much (ill toot my own horn) so i had made a video on this same topic! I think the biggest issue is the lack of insights and information from Intrepid. A studio based in open and honest dev work, not knowing why there is a delay make me think in the doomium realm.
    I hope its not due to them not having a process in place for Keys they want to add. It feels to me that they wanted to open keys but did not see the fine line time frame of a Q3 launch. The lack of info leads me to go to worse case vs there needs to be a delay for the sake of good development.
    I agree something has gone wrong with communication here and i think AMA is gonna be huge. Trust, honest open discussions are huge for this project.

    IMO, these situations where people need money before they make the game they are trying to sell are no good. The public at large shouldn’t even know about a project this early, everyone takes hold of what’s promised, gets hyped by some curated work in progress and starts clamoring for release. Devs start showing stuff, but they often promise things faster than they can deliver, delays….pitchforks gathering crowds, “soon I promise” and then October comes and goes….it must suck to make a game under such scrutiny and it sucks to watch and wait. So I’m just watching this; if it’s good it’s good, if it’s rushed slop after all the waiting than whatever.

  • @blazemonger1
    @blazemonger1 Месяц назад +1

    I do not see the argument this is due to other releases. A2 is not an open release, it is limited to backers and while potentially they may open sale of backer packages again for this Alpha, it still does not justify delaying the release for that reason.
    To be honest, a delay of one month makes no sense, what needs to get done that requires such a short and specific delay, this feels like there is a non development reason for it more than anything else. If there is show stoppers that come up last minute, a delay of a month seems very specific and you would delay into a broader timeframe to prevent having to come back a few weeks after and announce further delays as you did not solve the issue yet.
    Combine that with the consistent and repeated talk of a Q3 date being set and achievable and IMO you end up with "her is another reason for this". What that reason is remains the big question here but in general, I feel Intrepid says a lot of things but has very little to show for it and delays like this really are not helpful, which I'm sure they know so that adds to the idea that something rather serious must have come up to trigger this.
    One big problem I see is that Intrepid has built up the expectations for this Alpha to a point where it really only will be able to .. disappoint. And that may be completely unjustified when it does, but yet, here we are.
    For me, AoC is pretty much the fantasy MMO equivalent of StarCitizen so I'm used to these things by now :D

    Yes, communication is key. I think another major issue with how they went about this, is how similar it felt to that totally obviously fake game "The Day Before". That scares people. It hasn't really worried me too much, since I do think AoC and it's developers are VERY different than The Day Before and it's developers. - BUT - like you mentioned at the end with their clear F up in communication, saying one thing on a livestream then the very next livestream going back on that clear definitive stance is pretty worrying.
    This reminds me of my own workplace, I work in a hotel and there are a literal sh*tton of departments & we get similar F ups all the damn time- Communication is SO important and with so many employees, managers etc its incredibly hard to make things clear especially when deadlines are involved, i've seen before my very own eyes what was once a 5star hotel along with a 5star restaurant go down into the gutter and an incredibly massive reason was due to communication (or lack of) between the departments & management.
    This has also happened to mannnny game studios in the past & currently affecting some of the biggest, especially once they increase their team size a major amount, I really hope Intrepid aren't caught up in a workplace silo effect.

The delay itself does not surprise me, I speak from experience when I say that during the alpha stage of any software product it's quite common to have "unknown unknowns" that pop up during development that end up delaying milestones, likely it won't be until beta that we'll see more accurate predictions when it comes to timelines.

    I truly believe that T&L is sub-par, and hoped that Intrepid wouldn't let T&L's launch get in the way of them starting A2. Them delaying is safe and it makes sense if only because there are people that have access to A2 that also want to play T&L. My hope was that Intrepid would stick to their guns "This game isn't for everyone." and trust in their community. It *feels* like they put to much stock in the big streamers to stream and hype their game. All that said, I'm in it for the long run, the delay hasn't shaken my faith in Intrepid.

    I'm gonna get called an intrepid meatrider for this, but why the fuck does A2's release matter in comparison to other games? It's an alpha. It's gonna be a buggy mess that isn't even remotely feature complete. it is NOT the release of the game. honestly the less eyes on it the better probably, but i can already smell so much of this community getting pissy when A2 launches and it's not the fully feature complete MMO that everyone wants. Everyone is treating A2 like it's a full game release and that's all being concerned about the optics of release windows tells me, is that y'all are living or dying by A2's state at launch when the game is going to objectively be bad, and come october all I'm gonna be hearing is people trashing on a game in alpha cause it's not better than X game like you expected it to be.

      @sorasabi This is false. BG3 was highly praised at early access and that praise continued as they made updates all the way up to the release.
      As for OP unfortunately IS has put themselves in a horrible position where every public showcase of the game is essentially a soft launch. That's what happens when you fail to meet every self set deadline you make for 7 years. Also, alpha 2 is meant to be persistent and playable until launch, so it is effectively a soft launch.

    I'm not even sure October counts as a delay. If they had released it on Sept 30 to say they hit Q3 or they release it on Oct 1 instead, what's the big deal? Yes, I know it's most likely slightly more than that, but the point is all this really means is that A2 will release with even more polish. I would like to see them really ramp up production speed too, now that all the back end systems have been developed and are in place, lets goooo. Once they get those tested and flushed out in A2, I hope they're able to really start finishing the game out at a faster pace. Rogue, Summoner, other race esthetics for cities, biomes, etc. But the game looks amazing already and even in it's current state I know I would have fun playing it. I hate how toxic the community is. Well thought out constructive criticism is one thing, but people always complain how the corporate money hungry games are rushed and hollow, but then now can't seem to handle it when Intrepid takes their time to make an actual good game. 🤷‍♂️ Either way, I'm super excited. Even though they're growing, it's still a relatively small studio. I think people going insane over a one-month delay on A2 need to touch grass.
    That being said, my biggest concern right now is that, as Narc said, these monthly updates are highly curated. They're the "Instagram Stories" of an actual day in the life of an A2 AoC player. This A2 experience is not going to be a gameplay experience at ALL. I think people are in for a very rude awakening come October when they realize the first several months of A2 are going to be little more than loosely strung together, but still mostly isolated system exercises. It's not actually going to feel like a game for a LONG time yet. THAT is the reality which I think Intrepid have been irresponsibly shielding from view for the last several months in order to avoid breaking down the hype over A2.

I dont always engage with their forums and such as when i log on my feels have already been expressed by so many of us which shows we are all on the same jurney. As much as its a bummer the date is being pushed i honestly beleive its not bad. We are all wanting a good game for many years to come. I expect that A2 is going to be full of bugs and honestly i am looking forward to that. However i do expect the game is simi playable which it clearly is going to be. There is a lot at play over Q3. Massive game launches....which could impact its testing with A2. This clearly would have played part of their decisions. Further they have probally incounted some unexpected issues with the groups who have been allowed in to do some pre testing. Its all good news. i dont see any negativity from this and honestly my group of mates who dont follow the game other then via updates from me all feel the same. A2 will come when it comes. It's not about delay. It's about the fact that people don't see the game ever getting from alpha/beta to launch, like many MMOs before. It's a pattern.
    You can't expect the hype to be at 100% EIGHT years after the first announcement and the game is still in alpha 2. There is no 'perfect' product release, only 'well done' and 'poorly done.' If the AoC team wants to keep improving the game to a higher degree, that's fine, but don't expect that the game will not suffer from backlash or disdain.

I don't imagine they'll announce a2 date along a class showcase, I'd expect a trailer, maybe a talk about which features we'll be able to test in A2 etc -- an A2 focused stream, not a bard showcase. All in all, I think they knew that they weren't going to launch in Q3 for quite some time, and just lied through their teeth. Alpha 2 will be playable, but not a finished game, it will be missing content, raids, dungeons, even the classes themselves will be unfinished.
    The same goes for professions and gambling areas.
    The most fun will be the PvP, but the strong hype will last 1-2 months, from then on we will be playing those who want to support the project.
    The player who sees it from the outside will follow the progress from a distance, until the launch is near.
    We must be careful with the hype and understand that it is a REAL Alpha.
    The gaming industry is used to "Alphas" that are already finished games but they use that term to defend themselves from bad practices.
    This is the birth of a MMORPG that if it is well taken care of will change the sector.

    Alpha tests do not have a competitive overlap with existing games. By all logic this is an excuse because it makes absolutely no sense.
    Between crowd funded games that will never release and games that release too soon but fix themselves after a while...
    Which do you guys prefer?

    One of the biggest games in the world, Call of Duty, will be releasing in October as well. It would be sad if he tried to release it around the same time, for me at least. I like cod releases as a casual game.

    Its better if it comes in October, in September we got the release of Throne & Liberty, Diablo IV Expansion, Warframe Expansion so in sep. there is lots of competition, and before you say that Ashes does not target the same audience ,it does, I'm planning to play all of these games and its too much.

    I still have faith that the A2 release will go on in October. But if they delay it again without learning their mistake from that livestream, I'm going to start to doubt the game is even 50% done.

    • @HalIOfFamer
      @HalIOfFamer Месяц назад

      The game right now is not even 25% done. Max lvl in A2 is before you can get augmentation because augmentations are not done. We have 3 biomes at most out of a dozen or so. Only one node type out of 3, 2 classes missing and 2 very badly made and in need of redesign out of 8 total. A couple races are missing. And they always said it's gonna be the case with A2. A true alpha. It's just that they are taking their sweet time even considering that. I have games I can play, my life doesn't depend on this one, hell, I don't even have an A2 key, but I'll get one if it's reasonably priced.

    It's all a ploy. You come out in Q1 and say alpha 2 is going to be in Q3. This makes all the big companies conspire together to make Q3 big releases to try and squash yours. Then you bait and switch after all of them announce their stuff, and you go, "oops. It's Q4! ;)"
