- Maya Lin is the FIRST woman to design a memorial on the National Mall. "Architecture is a profession where you figure that whether you’re a man or a woman shouldn’t really matter. But when I was starting out, at the top firms, women architects were generally given the managerial positions, not the design positions. Why was it that women kept getting slotted not to be a design partner but a manager?"

What a jagged image we use for women who achieve greatly, defining accomplishment in terms of the barrier rather than the triumph. There she is up where the air is thin, where men still outnumber women, but where the altitude is awesome. Our goal with Firsts is for every woman and girl to find someone whose presence in the highest reaches of success says to her that it is safe to climb, come on up, the view is spectacular.

Maya Lin On Being A Female Architect: 'I Didn’t Want My Gender To Become An Issue' | TIME

She is an amazing woman! It’s very cool that she is from my little home town of Athens, Ohio. Maya, if you ever see this, I think you are awesome!
Drunk history brought me here.
Me too
Me too!!!! :D
Same
I just read about her story and I think she is a huge inspiration.
She won an anonymous contest and received backlash once they found out the winner was named Lin. But tell me again how there was no bigotry involved.
Her race and gender wasn't the only main thing that cause the backlash. There's also the design, which something that people aren't used to yet back then.
That’s right. And tell me the race and gender of the people who stood beside her to fight against the backlash and who defended her original design and fought to get it actually built.
It's a shame how Maya's work was initially condemned and met with scorn ( which seems to happen to many artists) upon initially unveiling her design for the Vietnam War Veterans Memorial. Myself, I found it to be the most moving monument upon my own visit to DC. I'm thrilled that Maya has since garnered the acclaim she deserved. In the end, she had the last laugh.

MORAL: Don't ever let others' criticism discourage you from achieving your dreams.
What a fascinating woman and a phenomenally powerful story of that monument.
Always been a fan!!
Maya Lin Our school so we are on our school we have this wax museum and we be female or a mail and I choose you because you’re a really great artist
Hi.. I am a gypsie from the Netherlands. We respect all persons women men children. Be hunted Make us universal.Good luck
她真的好像徽因,一样的眉眼,一样的对建筑的热爱
Her aunt was also a famous architect. Nice to see she continued the family tradition in the "beautiful country".
She's pretty!
Dress how you like. BE YOURSELF.
Its interesting how it was received compared to how it IS received. It was described "a black mark of shame".
What the heck why is there such a high dislike to like ratio
0:14 great concept, but still personally did not like the resemblance of a black scar... sorry just can’t help it...
Love love love her art 🖼!
How many lives her designed has save over the years?
Uh, none.
Ah, The Vietnam War. A war fought with no purpose but to transfer money from the US Treasury to the Defense Contractors and their shareholders, and then to the E&C companies.
Disgusting disregard for the lives of our own people.
Hell of an American
Her hair is soo longgg
le premier qui voit mon com il a 2 euros
WOW! A female architect!!! 😱
What's next? Female drivers?!?! 😏
Jay Kay I even heard a story about a female who wore PANTS!
"Maya Lin is the FIRST woman to design a memorial on the National Mall" Plus she went to Yale, genius.
To correct your statement, she's the first Asian-American female architect. You're welcome.
eh t I just quoted TIME?
My comment was made in response to Jay Kay's. :) Really sorry for any misunderstanding.
Suppression because of race and gender? Are you kidding? Is this parody?
you're being sarcastic or from Mars?
Sean Wardman, you live in the 1800s, you wouldn't understand human achievement or struggles.
if she was any good, she wouldn't be playing the 'poor women'' card.
Sono Tom in what way is she “playing the poor women card”? There were people who pulled their funding for this memorial when they discovered the architect was female and Asian. She’s simply saying it was an obstacle she experienced, and obviously overcame. If anything, she’s encouraging other women to fight for their place in the world.
And before you say that women fighting for their place in the world is me playing the poor women card, I believe that men have to fight for their place in the world, too.
She's def no good. She just won against 1400 designers...
