Here we see the first cars of the special R211T open-gangway test train being transferred to Pitkin Yard for testing. These cars will pilot an open, flexible passageway between cars in an effort to increase capacity, improve safety, and decrease asymmetrical car loading. Enjoy this look at the first time that these cars operate on NYC Subway rails with the gangways installs!

Before anyone ask, yes, the chains that connect the cars with the articulated sections have to be there, so that nobody would confused the articulated sections for doors. There were two incidents back in the 70s with the R44s and R46s when passengers mistake the car gap for doors. One person died in one of those incidents.
especially with phones these days.
The same sort of thing was happening with WMATA’s 7000-series cars a few years ago, to the point where for a time, the automated announcement system would announce “This is a 7000-series train” once the doors opened
Honestly, let those people cull themselves out of existence.

Cool metro north in NY
From a New Yorker, I've always been interested in Chicago's transit system versus ours.
It's a win-win for the CTA and the NYC subway. Both have new rail cars coming in.
I hope the CTA's 7000-series railcars will work without failure.
They look awesome!! The open gangway looks a lot different from the newer London Underground trains that have the open gangway. Much bigger. The Piccadilly line is getting new trains by 2025 and they have the open gangway.
The piccadily line ones will be like the sub surface line. So it will be fully open except for some bits at the bottom

I believe that the R211T cars will work well in the New York City rapid transit system. More of this type of railcars can be made, instead of the plain R211. Of course, anyone who views this episode should know that it was recorded on stations that were in revenue service to the riding public.
I thought the gangways would be like the Amtrak (centralized) but I can see they are almost the full width of the rail car. This is better for tight curves in comparison with the centralized ones.
well... it's metro... not commuter... need the space for more sadines
They look very clean 4 now! Let’s take a peek inside!

Incredible video of R211T.
Finally we got open gangway trains!
Yeah and finally one bum can stink up the entire train every car. Now take one of those at like 2am especially in the winter with a few of them in different cars. It's a very stupid idea since they're not going to do anything about the homeless people sleeping in the trains. If they didn't stink I wouldn't care but no one is trying to constantly smell bums on their way home. I don't get how no one thought about this?
@@Yusuq_Madeek free housing would solve that problem. it is quite stupid that you have to get off of any addiction and be mentally stable to get free housing... doing any of that is very hard without a stable roof above you. the homeless should get a house first before getting rehabilitation.

I love the ideas of open gangways. Do you have any interior looks of the gangways? Also why is the gangway look so thick? I know in some other cities/countries, the gangways are ridiculously small, it's about half size of the train door. But this looks like a full size of train doors
Because of Some tight curves in the System.
They look so cool with those gangways now but wait until those conquestors starts ruining them when they're in service 😒 😑
Hope you enjoy the hubs I made for your train 😁
Can't wait to see these trains in service it takes a long time for many reasons but it's worth the wait
The R211T Is Here.
Does anyone here think that the propulsion will have a different pitch or howl to it, in regards to the inclosed connectivity of the cars, hence no air will travel between the exterior of each car.
Yes they are coming out that's good 🔥
I assume that the testing won’t last nearly as long as the R211a cars because I’m pretty sure they share the same component being tested on the R211a cars except the open gangway.

@@TheRailLeaguer awesome it’s about damn time
Beautiful gangway subway. I do noticed a bigger gap between the gangway cars at the bottom, even with the chains.. I can see an accident happening. I assume this might end being an 8 car set instead of 10? The gangway makes it longer.
We well have to wait longer for answers
Well it’s about time, great to see!
If you are used to Toronto Subway System, the open gangway idea is nothing new. But hopefully this puts a end to subway surfing/cut the occurances by half.
I wonder if the train length were slightly increased because the spacing in between the cars looks a little longer
What you're seeing is that they no longer have bulkheads that angle outward in the shape of a trapezoid to minimize/bridge the gap between cars. (Well, the cab ends still do, but those won't have the accordion gangway things.) Instead walls are flat, literally 90° angles.
What every grizzled straphanger has been waiting for. Articulated railcars. Gonna make things much easier during rush hour...
This is so exciting to see! Can’t wait to take a ride!

These trains look great but sad to know once the R211 series successfully pass all tests and start passenger service, the R46's will begin getting scrapped. It will definitely be the end of an era

The first ever MTA Subway to have those Black Accordion Attachers
The train that everyone is most excited about YET they will never see it casually unless you go and hunt for it because stupid MTA only ordered 2 OF THESE SETS!! just 2 🤡
I thought they had a big budget?
@@Enzo575 Apparently these are just test trains and they only ordered 20 open gangway train cars not only for a test but it’s also for priorities. The closed ended cars are faster to build so more of those are being ordered to get them into service faster and start pushing older cars to retirement as soon as possible. More open gangway trains will be coming later, so in that way, the MTA is not stupid.

If successful this can be shrunk down to make the R262 just like how the R12 Museum Train is basically the IRT Size version of R10 BMT/IND Museum Train then followed by R17-R28 Museum Trains these are IRT Sized version of BMT/IND R16 R27 & R30 trains. To replace the R68s the ideal 75ft train is using R211 T seat pattern with 5 doors like a Hong Kong MTR CRRC Qingdao Changchun Springfield, MA & Chicago Illinois Urban Lines EMU.
Omg a gangway !!!!
Kind of funny how New Yorkers are going crazy over trains with gangways; meanwhile in Europe and Asia trains with gangways are par for the norm. Here in Singapore all our MRT trains have had gangway connections between all cars since the very beginning.
Also I'm kind of concerned that they didn't install rubber flaps in-between the train cars where the gangway connections are. On some gangwayed trains, there would be rubber flaps or similar in-between the train cars, near to the sides, as a form of safety measure for the blind; the idea is that they could use their walking sticks to "feel" the presence of the rubber flaps and know that it isn't a door. Prior to the installation of platform screen doors at all of our MRT stations (instead of only at underground stations), these rubber flaps were standard on trains that ran on lines with above-ground sections.
The chains seen at 3:29 serve the same purpose as the rubber flaps.
At the same time, the Singapore metro is very recent... when the first trains were ordered, the gangway technology already existed.
The New York subway is very old, older than most subways in Europe.

R211 Car Assignments
Base order (440 cars)
All 440 cars in the Base order are going to the A and C to retire 356 R46's at Pitkin Yard; The Exceptions are 75 R211S for Staten Island Railway and the 20 R211T's Pilot trains with open gangways. The A and C will share (5-car) R179's and R211's
Option order 1 (640 cars)
130 cars in the 1st Option order are going to Pitkin/207th for the A and C as spare units. Pushing out the (4-car) R179's to East New York for service increase on the J/Z lines. Making all C trains full length at 10 cars each. The Rest of the 510 cars are going to the E and F Since Queens Boulevard is the Busiest corridor in the B Division This Displaces 405 R160's Over to Concourse Yard for D train service while All R68's and R68A's which cannot be retrofitted with CBTC will get sent over to Coney Island to Run on the N, Q and W, as Broadway will be the sole remaining corridor without CBTC; while the N, Q and W can use 40 R160A-2's During weekends when the B is Not Running
Option order 2 (405 5-car units)
All (5-car sets) in the 2nd Option order are going to Jamaica to make Both the E and F 100% R211A/T's having open gangway trains on Queens Boulevard can increase capacity by 10% on Both the E and F lines. open gangways can make all the difference in crowding on the trains. Seriously, it makes zero sense to put high capacity cars (R211's) onto lower volume lines and with low capacity cars (R160's) stuck with high volume lines it doesn't match therefore it makes more sense to put open gangway trains on Queens Boulevard which will help with the overcrowding on the E and F lines and will reduce dwell times especially during rush hours having open gangways trains on high volume lines are beneficial while low volume lines like 6th avenue and Broadway get low capacity cars. As a Result of this 405 R160's will be displaced to Coney Island for B train service and displacing 260 R160's to 207th Street Yard for service expansion on the C. With the remaining 660 R160's at Jamaica, 65 of them are enough to make all G trains full length at 10 cars each and the remainder adding 155 cars for service expansion on Both the G and R lines
Option order 2 (32 4-car units)
All 4-car sets in the 2nd Option order are going to East New York for the M line to increase the spare factor and for fleet expansion; 92 R179's coming from the C will also provide service expansion pushing out 56 R143's to the L line for service increase allowing them to keep more of their R143 and R160 cars already configured for the unique CBTC used there which is more than enough so they don't need new trains.
To Wrap up:
(A): 375 R211/A's, 130 R179's, 20 R211T's
(C): 195 R211/A's, 260 R160A-2's
(The A and C will share a fleet)
(B): 337 R160A-2's
(D): 405 R160A-2's

Do you think that some people will be afraid to ride this open gangway train thinking that the articulation system will rip apart?
I can see this happening. On the other hand, NYC people have plenty of experience by now with articulated buses, with articulation systems that *look* the same. Some of these people may have also traveled abroad and ridden metro and regional rail systems with open gangways (there's plenty in Europe).
That's the least of my worries when riding an artic bus 😂
OMG open gangway is here!!!

@@TheRailLeaguerDespite the "lol", it is not a joke, it is a very real concern. And if there's a mentally unstable person it makes it even easier for them to follow you 12am at night when the cart has no one.
@@xRoshtack So you’re admitting that you were joking, because what you mentioned is no concern, especially as other cities have these types of trains and they work well under any scenario.

Tokyo and Sydney have these type of train and it's absolutely fabulous because there are cleaning crews all the time and I have not seen one single homeless people or mentally unstable person stinking up the whole cart. If you find such city and condition , Then you can prove your point. Otherwise, to put it as nicely as possible but you're just full of sh*t.
@@xRoshtack That’s not an excuse either because much of them have similar issues compared to NYC and the Open Gangway cars are doing just fine. Toronto is a great example of one such city.
At least 405 cars of the rest of the 1612 car order would potentially be Open Gangway trains for Queens Blvd Line services, specifically the E, F, and R.
From there the next order of Open Gangway trains can potentially be replacement R262 trains for the Lexington Avenue Line.
