This is Day 2 of our food culture trip in Laos, if you haven’t seen Khmu Food Part 1, you can watch it here:
We woke up naturally to the sounds in the early morning and sat around and hung out, just enjoying the fresh cool are. We strolled around the Khmu village for a little while before we packed up and headed to a Hmong village not too far away.
When I reached out to you during my trip to Laos and asked you for suggestions one what I should eat or cover, many of you said I should try Hmong food. Now Hmong restaurant are not that common, so the best way to eat Hmong food is to go to a local family home and have them cook. Along with Alex from White Elephant Adventures (www.white-elephant-adventures-..., he was able to arrange it for us.
Our Hmong meal was buffalo, all types and variations. The two main and favorite Hmong food dishes they made were raw buffalo with a huge amount of bile, and cooked buffalo with raw blood. We also had some buffalo stew, soup, and roasted buffalo.
Probably the most fascinating thing to me about Hmong culture and food as opposed to most of Laos is that Hmong typically eat white steamed rice as opposed to sticky rice. And unlike just about every other culture I’ve witnessed in Asia, where you get your own bowl of rice and share all the side dishes, in Hmong culture you have a communal bowl of rice and share everything. It may seem different to Western culture, but it really brings out a sense of family and community.
The food was awesome, all things buffalo. I especially liked the raw buffalo with bile, that was the best Hmong food of the meal.
It was an amazing day and I learned a lot about Hmong food, a quick introduction. Thank you for watching!

it's common in Hmong culture to eat from the same bowl and double-triple dip. it's not the most sanitary way to eat but hopefully you have a strong immune system. Even Hmong people in the United States still eat from the same bowl when there is an event. we have a saying food taste better eating with a lot of people

Claymore007 not a lot because there is so many different types of Hmong mixed background. Hmong Chinese, Hmong Thai, Hmong Lao and so on. Mien that I know of is Hmong Chinese known for beauty and singing talent... I heard from native Chinese people when I was in China. But yes there is mien than live in Thailand or Lao. Still to this day I am very curious to where exactly Hmong people originated or how we became.

This is so awesome! Being Hmong living on the other side of the world(U.S.), we rarely get the opportunity to see how our other Hmong brothers and sisters live in the motherland. We appreciate you for doing this and allowing us a glimpse into the lives of our fellow Hmong people still living in Southeast Asia. Thanks Mark! This was an awesome episode. This was a learning experience for a Hmong American as well!
^Puts things into perspective doesn't it? Hopefully more younger Hmong people in the states remember that cause all I mostly hear most of the time is how much they hate Lao, Viet or sometimes Thai people. Most of the overseas Hmong immigrated from Laos and when you see all the delicious foods your elders prepare, certain customs, dances, etc...to hate on Laos is kind of disrespecting your parents too! Like it or not, before immigrating into the West, for most Hmong, Laos was the only home they ever knew! Not to sweep history under the rug, but no world government is perfect. Without the political turmoil that unfolded in mainland Southeast back in the 60s through early 80s, most Lao, Viet, Cambodian and Hmong would live very a humble existence like a lot of these people throughout Southeast Asia. Count your blessings you get a chance to either start over or grew up in the West.
American Hmong, please visit your ancestor land in Laos, and donate some money to school

I’m Hmong and I usually eat Hmong food time to time, but if you haven’t ate anything for a while and you see Hmong food being cook at that moment of family gatherings, you’re in a hell of a buffet of satisfying, delicious, and whole-hearty food. Just ask your Hmong friends if you can attend their “Jingle Bell” one day. Done it for all my Latino, black, and white friends and they always come back for more. Specially purple sticky rice 😍😍
I get coworkers asking me where to buy Hmong food. I told them if you are looking for authentic Hmong food, you need a Hmong friend that will invite you to weddings, jingle bells, funerals or a gathering. That's the only way you can get real authentic hmong food.

Mark, I'm Hmong, and am so happy to see u featuring this for the world to see.
Great feature for the Hmong. Communal meals are a given, it doesn't matter if we are family or not, you will have a seat at the table. Like many ethnicities who are known to migrate, our dishes are highly influenced by the regions we settle into. However the simple boiled pea dish you were served is what many resort to as a form of comfort food, and it closer reflects our traditional dishes that our ancestors preferred or grew acccostumed to as part of being hill tribes with minimal variety of foods.
Anyhow, we really appreciate that you sought out authentic Hmong dishes, you're awesome! Thanks for your efforts!

animetorr xyooj I see where you’re going with this but in truth, there are many minorities who have not been discovered and I’m sure of it that they too deserve their own country. But we must make of what we have or don’t have.
Just my opinion but I really don't think our people are that concerned about our own culture these days, myself included. I feel like our way of life is quite impractical so we just adapt to our modernized environmental cultures/traditions, wherever that may be. I wish our culture cared more about each other but I only see the same thing in ours as I do in modern society. The typical immediate family first above all else for obvious reasons. I'll cut to the chase and just best describe my mind. Jesus is the ultimate hero and role model, not any one human lol

As a first generation born Hmong American, this makes my heart happy. The Hmong communal way of eating still holds today in Hmong American homes. This is an exact representation of how Hmong people set the tables and just share from the dishes. We here in the usa, utilize plates, but this is definitely how my mommas/grandma’s table is set when we’re all together. We love our boiled greens/meats, and the simplicity of a vegetable boil. And us eating white jasmine rice instead of sticky sets us apart from our Lao/Thai counterparts. Thanks for this video Mark! Im such an avid fan of you and your little family. Mark, thanks for showing us some of these unsung heros, the farmers and villagers. They are humble and hard working group of people, who unconditionally work day and nights to ensure agricultural produces and goods are plenty for the city people. They work only to feed their families, not making a profit. They seem happy. I believe you might feel it wholeheartedly when eating the food and talking to them. I have tremendous respects for farmers and villagers. The stories that these videos show keep me grounded, humbled and appreciative of what I have.
