You are a purest, by not liking touch screen, and stripping the camera down to the basics. Lovely video, nice to know you are getting back to yourself, physically.
It looks a lot like the old Fujica GW690 analogue medium format camera, aka "The Texas Leica". Always wanted one of those. And now I want the GFX 50R too :-)
Cheers for the honest vibes you got from it. Thinking of Switching from FF so I really appreciate the insight to help getting better understanding what life could be with it. Especially the mention regarding candid shots was something I was wondering. Happy to hear the story behind and it really made the moment you captured more meaningful for me as a viewer. Great shots, loved the video and for the first time i think I’m going to use that cheesy line “you got subscriber”. But only because I think I found a lot of similar interests regarding the way you approached the camera and it’s reason to exist. Thanks again!
Great review and insight. I also am unfortunately not in the position to budget for a gfx50r and lens(es). But, if Fujifilm dishes out new models as frequently as they seem to do, it won't be long till we see maybe a gfx50r2 or something like that.. Whatever the next version is.. And, maybe then the price on a gfx50r will likely drop to a more affordable level. Thanks again. For sharing your experience with the gfx50r. And, have a great and happy holidays.
Matt Day World of Photography (like MPEX) is “Figital”. They support both film and digital which I think is a healthy approach. This isn't related to the 50R only, but I find I really like the Rangefinder layout. Not because of the mystique of the image you can capture with it, or anything like that, it's just that my nose isn't bumping into the camera like it generally does with an SLR arrangement. Almost for that reason alone I would probably go with this model if I was going to purchase one.
Totally agree with the whole touch screen thing. I hate it and I too have mine disabled on my XT3. Again it’s nice that Fujifilm gives you the option and I would be very unhappy if at any time in the future we get forced into using touchscreen as normal practice.

Matt, Thanks nice overall summary. Know its hard to get into much detail about the camera, functions, shooting modes & ratios. (maybe next time) Learned & started my photog career many years ago using medium format film cameras. Once you see the quality, its hard to go back to any other format. (Though for events, sports, and general use smaller dslr way to go ) And the price point for the 50R that quality for $5K or less... "no brainer" ! I don't like that the GFX 50R and GFX50S deliver 14bit raw photos instead of 16bit raw like most other digital medium format cameras. With 16bit raw you can adjust more the dynamic range with Lightroom. Nevertheless the GFX50R is a very small, light and cheap digital medium format camera. Of course what is small, light and cheap is relative to sensor size.
everybody need class leading dynamic range... 50megapixel is an other question (huge files). but overall MF has advantage over anything for the right task.
I know exactly how to make Fujifilm release an even better MF camera at a much cheaper price: I need to buy this one. It'll happen within a week, based on past experience.
After rumors of rangefinder-style medium format from Fuji, I was hyped. But after release I have mixed feelings, in comparison to Hasselblad, it looks like a brick. IQ isn't that different from FF, this sensor is the smallest one used in medium format, FF is 60% of its size and if you prefer 3/2 crop (I do) difference is even smaller. Just but a used Fuji gw690 for $500, its 6 x 9 which is 5 times bigger than 35mm. Most people make their photos look like film in post production so why not just shoot with film in the first place.
The sensor is the same as the Hasselblad. I'm bummed that the ISO dial is gone - feels awkward when I shoot it to have ISO at shutter and I bump it a bit. The eyelet is so forward, as well, that it's hard to use a hand strap (I've now tried two) in a comfortable position. But we'll see over time how the pictures come out and I adjust.
i have a brick/cinderblock of a camera as well...There was no 'uproar' about card slots. It was just defensive posturing from those who bought those overpriced crippled, one card slotted mirrorless full frame cameras.I mean really, that's like removing one door from a sedan and trying to convince people it's ok.The proof of that is,you will see that silly decision corrected in the next models...When I delve into medium format, the 50R is in my sights...

There are regional differences. On the East Coast, the beard tends to be shorter, there's horn rimmed glasses involved, and as you travel west, camera bags change from nylon to leather. There is some research to be done about the North-South axis and earrings, but my studies are as yet incomplete on that subject.
Would be interesting to see you review Pentax 645D/645Z also. 645D’s in particular are more of a bargain now and have some very unique colours with the CCD sensor.
thanks for this video, I have a question, With its raw file(RAF) , will I be able to post process in Lightroom 6 ? Or do I need to update my Lightroom?
It's actually not, that was just Fujifilm having some fun on the stage at Photokina. ;) The 44x33mm sensor size has been recognized by the industry as medium format for many years prior to Fujifilm making the GFX series. Plenty of other manufacturers have been utilizing sensors of the same size in their cameras and calling it medium format, I don't see why it should be any different when it's Fujifilm doing it..
Matt, I have my first child coming in Dec. if I could have this or a Leica M240 to document his early years what do you think would be the smartest choice? Is the Lrge Format sensor THAT big of a deal if I’m using the 50mm 3.5? Compared to say the Voigtlander 35mm 1.4 on a Leica FF? Note I also will have a Contact G1 but can’t afford to shoot only film :)
I didn't go medium format digital until my daughters were 7 & 9 years old. The toddler crowd runs around too much to keep up. If they pose for pictures, or you can manage at least 1/125th (ideally 1/250th) you're golden.
Hi Matt, I just got mine 2 days ago, first time with a MF. So far I only managed to practice in interiors (my house), trying to snag nice portraits of my 6 months old daughter. She does move a lot, and I'm not used to the autofocus speed, so far 125x with high Iso (1500-3000) has worked nicely; any suggestions or comments about it? Im using the 45mm :)
It’s ok but it’s not a camera made for action and sports. It’s better suited for nature , landscapes etc. you can shot people on horses and stuff easily though.
Great review Matt. I'm always wondering what medium format digital is like and there's not enough videos out there. I'm shooting a medium format Mamiya m645 and the rolleicord so it's good to see what I could upgrade to if my money blows up one day.
I think Fuji have really done their homework on this one. I shoot MF and LF film exclusively (as a hobby), and this is a digital camera to tempt me. Could be the first ever to become a classic in the same way that some film cameras have over the years? I dare not get one 'cos I couldn't bear the thought of abandoning film photography.
Mike Allen It’ll be interesting to see how these cameras age. The Epson digital rangefinder (RD1 is the name I think?) has a bit of a cult following for its design and how it shoots. Outdated, for sure, yet people are still buying them up secondhand.
Isn't almost every camera in 2018/2019 a really good camera? I'm still waiting for a cheap-ish digital medium format camera that actually has a 645 size sensor. None of this 44x33mm bullcrap. For the time being I'll stick to film cameras :P
@@jt4369 if a 44x33mm sensor camera with a lof ot bells and whistles can cost $4000, then why not a photography focused, no video, modestly featured 54x41mm sensor for 5000-6000?
Nice review. Are these Jpg or Raw? I know Fuji has some really nice jpg colors but these were different/better than I remember so maybe you are tweaking the Raw to be more filmic? Either way they are fantastic, was just curious.
Shawn Brezny Thanks Shawn! These were all shot RAW and processed in Lightroom using Mastin Lab presets as a starting point and then I tweaked things to my liking. I was actually starting with the Portra 800+1 and then adjusting things a little from there. Definitely influenced by my recent rolls of Ektachrome. 🙏🏻
Coni Glione all I could find is that it's a bigger sensor...so better quality...more pixels? Medium format gives you a nice beautiful big negative...so, ya know, if its all digital it doesn't matter right?
I have a dilemma... I have a Fuji TX-1 and I've been thinking of selling it to fund the 50R. I obviously want to have both but can only keep one.... What would you choose? I'm just afraid the TX-1 will break down on me and I'll be out of luck cause there's nobody around to service it.
James Climaco Man, that’s tough. The TX-1 is a very specific use kind of camera, in my opinion. Panorama isn’t as versatile as a 3:2 or 4:3 ratio. I might go for the 50R over that..
James, I know your pain. I got 50R as a digital Xpan replacement (have Xpan 2 and not really looking to get rid of it anytime soon). I know people are RAW fanatics, but I shoot with Jpeg - minimizing need for post processing and having a bit of the film feel. Fuji film simulations are great fit for that (usually Provia at night) and mostly manual lenses (Xpan lenses fit the GFX great, but you can adapt pretty much any lens you can imagine including medium format glass [Bronica ETRS lenses are not expensive at all]). I also use the 65:24 crop mode to have the Xpan pano feel and this is currently one of the very few cameras on the market that offers 25 megapixel jpegs in this format (was considering Sony A7RIII, but it does not have crop mode in live view like 50R does and sensor is a bit smaller. No idea if this helps you in any way to make a decision, Xpans are really climbing in price as of late, and maybe it's worth it to take advantage of that? In any case good luck!
@@RadekDrozdalski This helped me more than you can imagine. I had no idea that the GFX had crop mode in live view, and in 65:24 for that matter. And adapting the Xpan lenses to the GFX never came to mind, what a great idea. I wonder about the Xpan 45mm f4 vs the GF 45mm f2.8 in terms of image quality though. It would be nice to hang on to the Xpan glass at least especially if it produces good image quality. With all that said, common sense weighs in favor of the GFX, but I'm still torn about pulling the trigger and getting rid of the Xpan body...I have a love/hate relationship with developing and scanning film but I keep coming back to it for some reason. =P
@@jamesclimaco5219 Excellent! GFX (and all other mirrorless cameras) allow for adapting pretty much and lens you can imagine. G mount is quite new, so there aren't as many adapters for it, as for example Sony E or Fuji X mounts, but still there is plenty options to go around. If you want to go this route - adapting manual lenses on GFX to get a different experience - keep in mind that there are a lot of manufacturers out there and adapters differ in quality. Sometimes even between samples form the same one. It all depends on their accuracy and as the old saying goes you get what you pay for (but even that sometimes is not true). You will get by with a $40 adapter, but it might not focus to infinity, or will focus even past infinity. Some people do not mind that, some do - it comes down to how much are you willing to work around by using the cheap options. Granted I have not tried any of the higher priced ones (Kipon, Novoflex or Rayqual) but in my experience K&F Koncept ones have a bit of play to them once mounted on the body, Fotodiox are better in that regard, but still my samples focus past infinity (same "issue" with K&F). I tested a lot of Nikon and C/Y lenses on GFX in Xpan crop mode and vignette is pretty much non existent (for regular to wide primes, have not got a chance to test tele ones yet). But 45mm Minolta f2 pancake SLR lens and adapter should not set you back more than 70$, and will allow you to get a similar magnification to Xpan 45mm lens mounted on GFX (their FOV also should be the same). Keep in mind that GFX sensor is big (for digital camera) but nowhere near as wide as actual Xpan opening (or even 645 medium format) is. As for GF lenses - they are focus by wire, so they are not as accurate in that regard as a manual counterparts. Still you can use back button autofocus / critical focus with focusing ring at 10x magnification technique with decent results. It all depends on your style of shooting and your needs. GFX is not a sports / wildlife camera, but I have been using it at night hand held with satisfying (for me at least) results and printing 32x12 inch Epson prints straight out of jpegs shot on it.
Enjoy your videos. Thanks. A side by side comparison of files with the X-T3 would have been interesting. How big is that medium format advantage over a really nice ASP-C sensor? No pixel peeping!
Thank you! I wish I would have had more time to go out and shoot side by side with both cameras and the same scene, but the week just flew by. Pixel peeping you could definitely see a difference, but in real world use, is there a HUGE advantage? That's tough. For most people, probably not.
I did get some relatively low light shooting in, a lot of the indoor family photos were low light. I had windows as a light source, but was still shooting 1/30th or 1/60th at f/2.8 at ISO 1600 and 3200.
Thanks for the reply Matt. I ask that question because, although I use digital cameras (currently canon markIII) for other things, I have been using my Pextax 67ii since 1998 for my night architecture photography using positive film like Provia 100f which gives a more natural look vs digital at night. Digital gives a more HDR type look, which on print i'm not to fond of. So, I was thinking a higher pixel camera like this Fuji, might do the job, so I could finally put my Pextax 67 to rest, seeing there are not many labs left to develop my positive film, and seeing I no longer have excess to an imacon scanner that I was using free for the past 9yrs, I need to find a digital camera that might do the job. So, any input would be great, Thanks, I enjoy your videos
I have seen some +70k shot X-T2s with well functioning joysticks. They get a bit softer over time, but also faster. Granted, that's my biggest concern on durability as well, as the lack of the D-pad increases the use of the joystick. And although Fuji's joystick is physically different looking outside, it is likely the exact same component beneath that other manufacturers use.
The build quality of the GFX50R is not that amazing. Cheap flaps on the bottom that don‘t really want to get in place back again, very flush buttons with almost no pressure point, a back dial with a stupid press-in function that feels strange to me and stupid button placement of most of the buttons on the back of the camera. Other than the awful build quality and ergonomics it is surely a nice camera especially for this super low pricepoint. The viewfinder gets super laggy when shooting the camera in RAW as the processor is not able to handle the data. You get what you pay for, a consumer grade compact JPG medium format system for a nice price. It is great for traveling. Coming from the Leica M8/M9, Hasselblad H3DII and Nikon D4 I might snag one when the used prices will drop under a thousand bucks (hopefully the bodies will survive until that happens).
Hey man, you’re not alone on touchscreens! I hate it, quickly turned it off on my Sony (was glad Sony’s touchscreen functionality is limited anyway). The only good implementation is for beginners in full-automatic, for a sort of smartphone like way of shooting.
Hi Matt, you may have talked about this in the past, but I just recently subbed. Who do you recommend for a CLA for an old Nikon FM and Minolta XG-1? Where do you get your older film bodies CLA’d?
Compeltely new to Fuji digital big format. So, I don't even know if it shoots tiffs, or jpeg FIne and Raw, etc. I really wish Fuji would let you shoot uncompressed tiffs that maintained the great jpeg qualities the cameras have. I really don't need raw.
Hey Matt, great Video. But one thing. Is it possible that your mic is broken? Or maybe your audio settings are messed up. I am listening with a good pair of cans and the audio is overmodulating. Especially when your voice gets a little louder. Keep up and greetings from Germany.

How does it compare to your sl2? I’m looking to buy a camera and can’t decide between the sl (601) and this gfx 50r... help! :)
Hi Matt,
I just got mine 2 days ago, first time with a MF.
Great video ! At what ISO did you shoot the 'your little girl with the apron' photo ? Thanks
I'd be interested in knowing as well :)
Is the Autofocus good enough for street photography?
It’s ok but it’s not a camera made for action and sports. It’s better suited for nature , landscapes etc. you can shot people on horses and stuff easily though.
Where is it made? Great video...
Japan!!!

Great review Matt. I'm always wondering what medium format digital is like and there's not enough videos out there. I'm shooting a medium format Mamiya m645 and the rolleicord so it's good to see what I could upgrade to if my money blows up one day.
Thank you!
This thing will rival your 4x5 and crush your 6x6 film
@@nickfanzo In the darkroom? I don’t think so😀
@@mike747436 actually yes and I shoot both
@@nickfanzo Ah ok, I only shoot film and print analogue.
So its just a larger sensor...?
I bet your a favorite of Ken Angry Photographer 😂 😍
Isn't almost every camera in 2018/2019 a really good camera?
I'm still waiting for a cheap-ish digital medium format camera that actually has a 645 size sensor.
None of this 44x33mm bullcrap. For the time being I'll stick to film cameras :P
Lol
645 image sensor….lol. That’ll cost a house.
@@jt4369 if a 44x33mm sensor camera with a lof ot bells and whistles can cost $4000, then why not a photography focused, no video, modestly featured 54x41mm sensor for 5000-6000?
Can you use X lenses on this? I have a 16mm1.4 ...
Think about it for a second...done?
🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽
Would this be suitable for interior/product/real estate photography?
Absolutely.
yes, great
BUT WHY
why do you need even more resolution?
Have you seen photographs from this thing? It’s insane
Errr what happened to "Whatsupguys Matt Day here"?!!
Haha, I just got tired of it. I really only did it because people would ask why I didn't say it, but it just felt cheesy.
👌
Nice review. Are these Jpg or Raw? I know Fuji has some really nice jpg colors but these were different/better than I remember so maybe you are tweaking the Raw to be more filmic? Either way they are fantastic, was just curious.
Shawn Brezny Thanks Shawn! These were all shot RAW and processed in Lightroom using Mastin Lab presets as a starting point and then I tweaked things to my liking. I was actually starting with the Portra 800+1 and then adjusting things a little from there. Definitely influenced by my recent rolls of Ektachrome. 🙏🏻
Honest question; what's the point/purpose of digital medium format? What does it matter? Theres no negative?
Coni Glione all I could find is that it's a bigger sensor...so better quality...more pixels? Medium format gives you a nice beautiful big negative...so, ya know, if its all digital it doesn't matter right?
You're getting a larger sensor the same way a film medium format camera is giving you a larger negative. Higher resolution and image quality.
Matt Day thanks, I'm young(33?:)) but pretty removed from the digital world.
which lens will be better to start off with?
Depends what your needs are
40mm
Great video, I would also like to hear your thoughts on the X-T3 and the lenses you have.
Elizabeth Pink and Turquoise XT3 videos will start in January! Got plenty I want to make. 🙏🏻
@@mattdayphoto That's great! I really value your opinion on camera related things.
Elizabeth Pink and Turquoise Thank you! That means a lot to hear.
GFX is not a sports / wildlife camera, but I have been using it at night hand held with satisfying (for me at least) results and printing 32x12 inch Epson prints straight out of jpegs shot on it.
matt you buy camera again
Enjoy your videos. Thanks. A side by side comparison of files with the X-T3 would have been interesting. How big is that medium format advantage over a really nice ASP-C sensor? No pixel peeping!
Thank you! I wish I would have had more time to go out and shoot side by side with both cameras and the same scene, but the week just flew by. Pixel peeping you could definitely see a difference, but in real world use, is there a HUGE advantage? That's tough. For most people, probably not.
I wondering if you used it with low light, or outside night shooting
So, any input would be great, Thanks, I enjoy your videos
edward stewart Ah, man. I miss my 67ii! That’s one I wish I never would have sold.
I appreciate the support though! 🙏🏻
Hi Matt, is it bigger than Mamiya 7?
Jumin Kim size specs can be found online.
Why compared this amazing piece of technology to something old and irrelevant? Lol
I wonder if that joystick wears out quick.
Roesler How fast do they wear out on game controllers? 🤠 WTF kinda question is that ya bloody fool! 🤣
@@stephengatley8144 I don't know. I don't play video games.
Guess we’ll know in a few years
It’ll be interesting to see how they hold up years down the road, but they feel pretty tough.
Photographers suffer from G.A.S.
Eric Burke It’s inevitable.
U related to Nick Carver? U guys look like brothers
Great!
All the praises and no cons?! lol
Hey man, you’re not alone on touchscreens! I hate it, quickly turned it off on my Sony (was glad Sony’s touchscreen functionality is limited anyway).
The only good implementation is for beginners in full-automatic, for a sort of smartphone like way of shooting.
Hessel Folkertsma Good point! Probably seems natural to those who have only shot with smartphones in recent years.
I pefer your m6 :)
Roman Kralovic You and me both. 👍🏻
You can’t make 10 foot prints from your m6
Hi Matt, you may have talked about this in the past, but I just recently subbed. Who do you recommend for a CLA for an old Nikon FM and Minolta XG-1? Where do you get your older film bodies CLA’d?
For 5 grand you should think the body wouldnt be the place to cut corners.
I just got GAS... but I know there's nothing I can do about it because this is one expensive piece of tech
Paolo Portillo Haha, you and me both.

As soon as I sell one of my kidneys or if some of my rich relatives dies, I'll buy this camera :D
