  • Dad and I taking a look at a 1977 Montesa Cota trials motorcycle. We bought this a few years ago and never really took a close look at it. We found a few surprises.

    Hi, here David, from Spain. The hole in the rigth side, is normal; is for a grommet that runs the electric wires from the magnetic wheel for lights and spark coil. The other hole in the left side, in my 348 Trail, have a grommet also, but is closed, doesn't have anything here. May be I include some pictures of my engine, but I can't do it.
    Greetings from Spain.

    Wow i remember when those trials bikes came out. Always amazed me how they climb walls and rocks and obstacles with those bikes.

      They are amazing. I used to have a short grainy video at the end of my videos as an outro. It is the only video I have of myself when I used to be able to ride them like they should be ridden. I will send you a link in separate comment. BTW sorry I missed your live talk. Interesting stuff and I agree with you, sharing the knowledge is the great thing about these platforms. Best!

    I own two Cota 348, a 76 and a 77 model. Here in Austria they have been very popular and it easy to finf one. The 77 in running condition I bought for 400Euro last year.

    Hello again, I want to apologize. The hole where the magnet wheel wiring comes out is below the one that was covered with black tape. I watched the video again and I could see that the wiring comes out from the same place as in the engine of my appreciated 348 Trail. I don't know what this hole would cause... a hit against a large stone? But it would have broken the large outer casing, which perhaps they changed and put black tape to hide the hole in the inner casing and not have to change it, at the same time. It will take a lot of work to do this task.
    Greetings from Spain.
    Have a nice day.

    I'm guessing that empty compartment with the mystery hole maybe housed an oil pump for a non premix variant with a separate oil tank? maybe.. At 9:45 it looks like there is a blanked off shaft outlet on the inner case casting inside that cavity. Did Montesa do a road version with that engine?

    • @theeddies
      @theeddies  11 месяцев назад +1

      That is possible. Good thought. They had a few road bikes in the late 60's and early 70's like the Metralla. It is possible they used the same cases. The 250's and 350 cases are the same IIRC.

    Re. Lhs chamber. I guess that was for a cross shaft left to right gear change swap.

    • @theeddies
      @theeddies  2 года назад

      That is very possible. I will have to look into that. Not sure I ever rode a Montesa with right hand shift. I think a few of the Bultacos had that but not as late as 77. Given that odd space though it might make sense.
