Generally, I tend to lean toward an initial measure of kindness and respect with people unless and until it becomes apparent that is not what’s called for. Having watched the evolution of your videos on the subject from the beginning, it becomes abundantly clear that the shift in attitude was only after being provoked and in direct proportion to the disrespect, insults and general offensiveness from flat earthers in response to your early videos, primarily the first one and the simple, fact based reality it demonstrated. Considering that, along with the fact that the ones like Weiss are indeed conmen, and as you’ve pointed out, their very existence as flat earth peddlers is a direct insult to countless scientists across various fields around the globe, and the work to which they’ve devoted their lives, the approach you took with him was appropriate, nothing less than he deserved.

Is there any mathematical model for sundials in regard of the flat earth model? I mean you can find it very easily for a spherical earth. I'm just curious if the ever published a solid model for anything you can verify in your own garden for example....
Almost half through and good talk. Totally agree with most top flerfs being con artists. I had the misfortune to have a written exchange with Sleepy Warrior on his old channel. With him I think its more ego than actually being in it for the money
Well, they're trying to demonstrate the LACK of a curve, and the way the experiment is meant to go from the flat earth model is that, because the earth is a flat plane, then if you have a laser, a screen with a hole, and a recieving screen, all at the same altitude, then the laser can proceed unobscured. However, in the real world, one must raise the laser slightly higher for it to go through the hole in the screen, because the distance between them introduces curvature significant enough so that a beam from the laser will be blocked.
A laser emits light and its subject to refraction. If the light coming towards you is refracted, then sending light back to that location will also be refracted.
@@bornn68 8" per mile is a linear equation. The earth is a sphere and so you need trigonometry. 8" per mile is a rough calculation for short distances but it does not actually describe reality. And so of course flat earthers apply it and get weird results, because they misunderstand the globe model. They believe "globeheads" use 8" per mile to define earth's curvature, but that is because they don't understand maths, or what the globe model says. I also don't fully get your question. Could you word it differently?
@@bornn68 Refraction has nothing to do with the physical curvature of the Earth. The argument flat Earthers have is that a certain object should be hidden by the horizon due to the Earths curvature. Because of refraction (the bending of light) some of that object may still be visible. Therefore, refraction would need to be included into any formula that determines what would be visible. Flat Earthers most generally don't include refraction into the formula and some even ignore the observer's height. The remaining discrepancy is due to the fact that the amount of refraction varies day to day and even throughout the day. What kills their argument is that a portion of the object is indeed obstructed by the horizon. There are many other conclusive ways to determine the shape of the Earth other than just looking out over water :)

What is zero, anyway? Our understanding of zero is profound when you consider this fact: We don’t often, or perhaps ever, encounter zero in nature. Numbers like one, two, and three have a counterpart. We can see one light flash on. We can hear two beeps from a car horn. But zero? It requires us to recognize that the absence of something is a thing in and of itself. “Zero is in the mind, but not in the sensory world,” Robert Kaplan, a Harvard math professor and an author of a book on zero, says. Even in the empty reaches of space, if you can see stars, it means you’re being bathed in their electromagnetic radiation. In the darkest emptiness, there’s always something. Perhaps a true zero - meaning absolute nothingness - may have existed in the time before the Big Bang. But we can never know. Nevertheless, zero doesn’t have to exist to be useful. In fact, we can use the concept of zero to derive all the other numbers in the universe. Kaplan walked me through a thought exercise first described by the mathematician John von Neumann. It’s deceptively simple. Imagine a box with nothing in it. Mathematicians call this empty box “the empty set.” It’s a physical representation of zero. What’s inside the empty box? Nothing. Now take another empty box, and place it in the first one. How many things are in the first box now? There’s one object in it. Then, put another empty box inside the first two. How many objects does it contain now? Two. And that’s how “we derive all the counting numbers from zero … from nothing,” Kaplan says. This is the basis of our number system. Zero is an abstraction and a reality at the same time. “It’s the nothing that is,” as Kaplan said. He then put it in more poetic terms. “Zero stands as the far horizon beckoning us on the way horizons do in paintings,” he says. “It unifies the entire picture. If you look at zero you see nothing. But if you look through it, you see the world. It’s the horizon.” Once we had zero, we have negative numbers. Zero helps us understand that we can use math to think about things that have no counterpart in a physical lived experience; imaginary numbers don’t exist but are crucial to understanding electrical systems. Zero also helps us understand its antithesis, infinity, in all of its extreme weirdness.
Just looked around. Guess what? Zero elephants in my room, zero presidents of the USA, zero pyramids, zero airplanes, zero trees and let's not forget, zero Dave Farinas. Quite some zeros, all in all.
Great job professor Dave. Keep on going. However, If you allow, I would recommend a small correction. While the shape of Earth's surface is a sphere, the planet itself is a ball (to a good approximation, off course).

I mean you can find it very easily for a spherical earth.
I'm just curious if the ever published a solid model for anything you can verify in your own garden for example....
I wonder who is the smartest person in the room after you leave? Great content and great interview.
Zappa " Voice of my generation that few people knew, as interpreted by Tubeway Army?
Not all of them are dumb, some are just part of the con. Good discussion guys 👍
Almost half through and good talk. Totally agree with most top flerfs being con artists.
I had the misfortune to have a written exchange with Sleepy Warrior on his old channel. With him I think its more ego than actually being in it for the money
How are these flat earthers demonstrating the curvature with laserbeams, (I just watched some of a video)?
Cool, cool. I also gather it is an 8" drop for every mile over water, so does refraction explain say like 100 miles, how much does it drop?
Prof Dave is a legend. Becoming my new Hitchens, his ability to explain things whilst being self-deprecating is what's needed to bring others on board.
kikagaku moyo just disbanded btw :(
LOL, Dave has articulated this as perfectly as anyone possibly can with his notion of these tiers of science denial where for example he can have some sympathy for anti-vaxxers because the issues there are a little more subtle, but absolutely ZERO sympathy for flat earthers, which is bottom of the barrel tier. Finally, a proper voice of reason.
I know you're fed up with flat earth, but it's still fun to watch them get dunked on... I'm late in the game, mainly because I didn't realize people ACTUALLY believe it. Now I'm seeing the videos, and horrified by the stuff they peddle. Your video debate on Shaun Attwood's channel hit classic status.
But I watch your other tutorials, and I love the history and Italy videos. This discussion was cool, to hear about other things not-FE. Like your music. Can't wait to watch that take off!
@20:35. Wait... Movies aren't real? Oh man, I'm so depressed now...
But the matrix is still a real thing, right? Hahahaha....
You are amazing, Dave! Keep taking them to class! It'll have to get through to one of them eventually.
I had no idea that Dave was a musician
He could debunk Ben Shapiro on his views on transgenderism AND his views on rap not being music
Shapiro thinks rap isn’t music?
@@jakejohnson6954 He might've changed his thoughts but last I've heard, yeah, he doesn't consider rap music
@@smellafella2841 thats kinda dumb
You know Flat Earth is the bottom of the barrel when even the likes of Kent Hovind makes fun of flerfs.

Triangular Earthers deserve a platform in the shape debate, we may be invisible now but we will inherit the square Earth! Triangle earth I mean. Sorry I used to be a square Earther but I evolved beyond those clowns
Dave is the man
I want Dave to adopt me
That was an awesome discussion. I have a frightening number of things in common with you. unfortunately, age is not one of them, and it takes its toll. You are always a young man, until one day all of a sudden, you are not. Get after the dream, join NARAS if have not already, and keep the dream real ✌️
can't hear them
Turn up your volume
Have you heard of Dr John Campbell on RUclips. I would like your opinion on he. seems to be a charlatan to me but I don't have enough medical knowledge to know exactly what he's saying is correct.
Oh this will be interesting!
;)
Can you debate globebusters? I am sick and tired og them telling people that the earth is flat and get away with it! It is sad people can make money of fake information like this :(

He thoroughly debunked them with his videos. The head guy already accidentally proved the earth rotates

It’s the horizon.”
Once we had zero, we have negative numbers.
Broken hearts are for assholes.
Great job professor Dave. Keep on going. However, If you allow, I would recommend a small correction. While the shape of Earth's surface is a sphere, the planet itself is a ball (to a good approximation, off course).
@@bob.5857 No. A sphere is a two dimensional surface - the boundary of a ball. A ball consists of a sphere and its interior.
