Amazing job from everyone!. Christian thanks for your dedication, and shareable love! - and you guys are FAST! haha... (although, you get the samples before the video is out right?... cause if not... gadæmn! ;P
@@benirodriguez9516 nope I just caught the video right as it was uploaded hahaha. Christian's welcome to send them in advance if he wishes, would mean people can get the kontakt versions right as the video comes out.
I just implemented release trigger volume control and an on/off switch available directly in the Kontakt GUI. Let me know if there is an interest for it or else I won't bother Christian with having to update the existing version.
Very... very well thought-out content. A rarity in youtube. I really love the editing/warmth/quality of the video itself, but most of all you perform like someone straight out of BBC. A great talent in commentary. Of course I clicked for the music analysis, but stayed for the overall content quality. Brilliant.
I just recreated it in Cubase. Feel free to use the audio voice clips in the audio subfolder of my template for your logic session! drive.google.com/file/d/1_2BulKX6ZQjBIG4xXKoWZW0OXTaJNZui/view?usp=sharing
That cheeky grin to the camera on the first note, you can tell this is your absolute passion, I love it! Really looking forward to seeing the evolution of this project, BRAVO!
Although a lot of the details go over my head, I always learn something from your videos. I ♥️the jumpcuts and your overall production style. Thank you.
The piano book is a fantastic idea. I work on software product that is both open source and commercially available. I think it’s fascinating to follow how you are trying similar concepts in the sampling industry. The law seems to be slightly different wrt program code and audio samples. But I think there could still be a legal framework that could fit making this project both open source and a commercial product.
I'm loving v.3 of PB. I'm very new to sampling, and I'm curious what makes the most sense when it comes to scaling up. If you were going to double the total number of samples, what makes for a better sampled instrument: 1. more velocity layers, 2. round robins, or 3. sampling pitches closer that a P5 apart?
Thankyou again for setting this whole thing up. Sampled the piano at my parent's house this week, it worked OK but not as good as it could be, so will go back and have another go with this new template. I also sampled my fretless bass guitar (acoustically, with microphones) and the sound I'm getting is probably now my go-to bass tone... so there are hidden, unexpected benefits all over.
wow. mind blown, so excited to sample my own instrument........just as soon as the pandemic clears and I can get a piano tuner.....! Thank you Christian!
Great Watch. Sounds very nice. It would be great to have pictures of all the pianos as they are being recorded. Also, some info on mics and the recording chain used would be great. I know it would be more work but it would be so useful to know the background of the recording. I also think it would be good if someone used the piano instrument in a song or composition that they credit the maker of the piano library used. If I was uploading a piano that I had recorded, I would love to know if it inspired someone to write a piece of music. It would also be courteous to the hard work that someone has put in.
Honestly? I understood 12.3 % of this. BUT... found it very inspiring. To see how real music and technology can work together. (Also helps me to make better sense of Spitfire strings which I bought year ago) Thanks a lot for your contributions :)
It would be great to see Piano book work like the Spitfire Labs product, Something that lives and breaths and can be easily added to and easy to see new pianos and prototypes. It can be quite hard to keep track of what I do and don't have. Loving the concept though mate it's been great to watch the journey. PS it sounds bloody lovely!
Christian, as well as kindly supplying Logic projects and MIDI for us to use, you may have some joy exporting in OMF. Both Cubase and Pro Tools support OMF...Just a thought? Also Cubase 10 now supports AAF too! Great video again btw :-)
btw this project is so neat!! no idea how i stumbled upon this but i'm glad i did. hopefully i can find something interesting enough to contribute someday.
It's a little off topic, but did you ever consider sampling uilleann pipes? It might be the most difficult instrument to do properly. Any opinions or practical experience out there?
Great video, love the template. Would suggest that the MVP needs another dynamic layer between the two heard on this, seems quite a lot of disparity between the two timbres. Now I've gotta go find a piano somewhere to sample . . . 🤔
This is quite amazing information that you’re giving away here. I will soon be creating my own libraries from electric bass samples (I was primarily an electric bassist for about 12 years and have never found a decent sample libraries for electric bass) as well as very unique instruments made from random found sounds. I’ve been working with a successful youtuber recently who you may know of, Andrew Huang. We’ve been creating music out of sampled sounds from various unexpected objects. A cover of Ariana’s 7 rings using actual rings for example. I thought it would be very cool to have those sounds and percussive loops and instruments made into kontakt libraries. I’ll be using the information in this video as well as your latest video showing how to put an instrument into kontakt. The value of what you’re giving away here on your channel is amazing. Thank you.
Thank you for making this process and the free piano instrument. Is anyone else having an issue with the sustain pedal on this piano. I'm using the exs instrument, and experiencing some samples not sustaining sometimes when the pedal is down. I know this should be handled by exs24 as either sustainable or one shot, so it sounds like a hardware issue but it's working fine in the same project on other sampled instruments in exs24.
For anyone else who's had the same issue, the voice count in EXS24 (top left) has a default of 16 notes. This needs to be increased if you are playing something a bit more dense, otherwise the "older" notes will cut short. in my case a voice count of 50 is more than enough.
Just downloaded the piano planner monolith template. I was hoping I could use it in Ableton, but it looks like this is for Logic only? How hard would it be to make my own template in Ableton? Either way, many thanks for this content!
Hey Christian, terribly sorry that I'm a complete idiot when it comes to the EXS24... how on earth does the file management work in that? I can't get my head around it. Maybe mostly because I want to control where to save my instrument and to keep the .exs file bundled with the sample files. As if you had any time left but an appendix to this video showing a little bit more in depth of those kind of boring things would be more than appreciated.
Awesome as always (apart from the Mac/Logic Pro X centrism) - you must get asked a million times but can you please tell me what camera you are using on the mountain? I have been looking for wide+good quality and you seem to have found it. (e: Got it, Panasonic GR5.)
Hello! Been thoroughly enjoying your content, great stuff! Are you thinking of this MVP format as just a minimum requirement or is every library going to have to follow this template? Could one for example make a library with a bit smaller intervals between the samples and an extra velocity layer and submit it, or would that break with the philosophy of keeping it as simple as possible?
JUST MADE MY FIRST SAMPLE INSTRUMENT! And would have had no idea where to start if not for this template - thank you soo much! Follow up question: -Are you expecting all the pianos to use this same sampling format (and be the same file size)? I've also been playing around with the possibility of a staccato piano two mic positions
Could we perhaps get a really basic set up for recording a piano without the front removed, and maybe a tip on what mics to use if one can't afford a stereo-vintage-neumann-gold pair?
Simen Hauge Paulsen sure, will do, the best position for the mics is always where it sounds best I remove the front so you can hear the piano’s innards other than that it doesn’t change the sound much because the piano’s sound emanates from the sound board which is at the back on an upright and from underneath on a grand.
Just curious are you using a cloud lifter or similar with that SM7? I love putting them through my API pres but have to have the gain completely cranked which isn’t ideal. Just curious if the low output was a problem for you.
I have a question regarding tuning the samples. I have sampled a piano that is a bit out of tune. At what point should I tune the samples for best results? Before Noise reduction? After? In Kontakt? should I do it on each individual mic or print the blend of mics and then pitch shift that? Any recommended pitch shifting algorithms?
This sounds so great! However, is anyone else having a problem with the sustain not holding? It will work for about the first 6 notes, and then stop working. I'm new to using the EXS24, so there could be something I'm doing wrong. Any advice would be really appreciated.
I just discovered your channel from a YT recommendation (I think because I’ve been watching a ton of JunkieXL videos). I can’t wait to go back and watch more of your videos to catch up. I’d love to try a make Reaper compatible instrument , I still need to look and see if you have the wav files available for that. The biggest question though is, what kind of dog is he, I think I’ve picked up that his name is Oscar, but he’s beautiful.
arriving so late to the party ! I had saved this video on my computer long before the pandemic, and obviously it got lost. I've just found it, after watching the refined Dave Sampler vids you made on the new logic. If you are reading this, dear christian, would you kindly agree to upload / send me the Kate template ? Much love from Paris, Theo
Christian...I need your advice. Firstly I should point out that I have Autism...In a turn of events I've found your channel the only one I can trust In terms of the wild west that is youtube. I spend my days trying to produce Hip Hop like the old school Kanye west sound a.k.a ‘Through The Wire’ and after watching your sampling videos I feel inspired to be able actually apply the ‘akai’ style of sampling...even though i’m using Native instruments maschine (A massive mistake seeing as I honed my craft on Akai 2500 and Logic pro!)..Anyway...Is there anyway you can show me how to find 1. The fundamental frequency of a sample & how to implement that into eq and mapping across a sampler? I’ve watched your videos on making your own samples and feel like I can trust your advice? I appreciate your very busy and understand if you can’t offer this advice. Anyway your videos are a great way of myself being able to enjoy a conversation about sampling that I can’t have with anyone else because of my social skills. Ben
Once again thank you very much for all of this - yet another excuse not to do the gardening, boy will I be in trouble! I shall endeavour to provide reciprocity via a purchase.
The piano sounds lovely. Great to see there’s a Kontakt version. All Spitfire paid pianos only work on the paid version of Kontakt, which has stopped me buying one.
Thanks Christian, didn’t realise HZ worked. I think I didn’t check on that because the big HD requirement is too much for my laptop. Glad to hear there’s more coming.
WE HAVE KONTAKT VERSIONS courte sy of Stuart Bramwell (comes up trumps again!) and Fredrik Fernbrant: www.pianobook.co.uk/news/2019/2/15/mvp-prototype

Cheers Stuart, just tried out yours and it sounds lovely

Bård Linga not at all, the point of minimum viable product is this is the bottom line, the minimum requirement.

Great project this

Then goes ahead and chops off the beginning!! am I missing something?
amazing
Thank you
Has anyone done a Pro tools version of the template yet?
I LOVE the jump cuts. Oh, and FIRST!!!
Here's a hastily put-together Kontakt version (without the release samples unfortunately):

What's the thinking behind only sampling 12 notes up the circle of 5ths VS every note of the piano?
Jake Rapp to keep the size down, to make it easier but I also prefer the sound? I’ll explain my theory behind it in the next one.
can you make the template an OMF?
Do you ever use the cymbal, it’s always there and please just got it once
i keep thinking this too! As well as the piano, im going to make a cymbal sample pack - i think i have 47, no HHXs though.
I would keep upwards of 400gb for piano samples that were quality!
I do not hate the jump cuts!
Once again thank you very much for all of this - yet another excuse not to do the gardening, boy will I be in trouble! I shall endeavour to provide reciprocity via a purchase.
Oscar mate...
Fookin' Tripods!!!!
so only mac and logic?
He's made available MIDI and audio files if you want to create a template for other DAWs
The piano sounds lovely. Great to see there’s a Kontakt version. All Spitfire paid pianos only work on the paid version of Kontakt, which has stopped me buying one.
Norfolk Traveller Hans Zimmer piano isn’t, but other than that you’re right and we’re rectifying!

That outro
Here is a version for Sampler for my Ableton Live friends!

Why not record every note? It feels a bit artificial to me to pitch recorded notes up or down to fill in
Tim Erickson but it doesn’t sound artificial to me... I have a theory about this which I’ll share on my next pianobook vlog.
to me pitched down notes actually sound lovely. they sound more full and warm.
Did he ever explain why he samples with the circle of fifths
I bet Oscar loves the bunnies :-)
Oscar 😅
Oden’s raven’s balls.. Who hates the jump cuts? 🤔🤨😆
The .sfz format (soundfont) is the best for free and open source sound libraries!
Is there any capable sfz editor available? Apart from TXT editor
I wonder if Oscar actually looks out over and enjoys that view....
Have you lost weight? Gratz!
Rafa Dominguez intermittent fasting, thanks for noticing.
Could we get an American english sample template voice? Can't understand a goddamned word.
Kidding. ;) Awesome workflow idea.
Kate sounds a little 'matronesque'. I'm not averse
:)
