Been digging into your videos now. Just adopted a newborn and found I can watch RUclips videos while feeding, so while taking care of him I'm learning something. I especially enjoy yours as they are short with just 2 or 3 bits of information. I especially like this one, so far, as I didn't realize the whole room build-up thing with percussion releases. Decreasing release time is such a great tip. So thanks for all this. I'll be getting through all of your current videos I'm sure.

Woa, I've never stopped to realize why some perc soundfonts cut off the hit with note off, I just thought that was strange and moved on. That's really good knowledge.
So simple and so clean - I'm going to try this on my strings and perc from now on. Makes you sort of wish developers built this into the plugin - such a great idea. The before/ after was night and day.
I'm happy this was helpful! Some developers do put the release button into the front GUI but definitely not all of them so this is a great trick in the Kontakt backend.
Thank you Anne! This is a really great ingenious tip! I can see how your experience and strong background with audio samples can be so helpful in understanding their shortcomings and finding solutions to fix them. It's much easier when you understand what is happening, right?! Thanks!
Thanks for watching! Really glad this little tip is helping you - and I agree, understanding the tools you have really helps you find solutions to potential issues.
This is something you do with the hihats on a drum synth. There it's called a choke-group. But I never really thought about it like this for hand percussion. Thanks!
@@AnneKathrinDernComposer It is! I actually just got around to making these adjustments to my percussion section as I was updating my template, can't wait to get back to writing!
hey AK, you should check out berlin perc one of these days - it has true dampening. Which is cool because they actually sampled the intstruments being choked/muted so they don't ring out - but this sounds different than simply cutting the sample off. it's a little extra realism - which is nice! that said, release samples are all CCable in capsule, but I never thought about the concept of having an abnormally short release on purpose
Great advice, but I'm honestly quite amazed that cubase(/kontakt) doesn't have a "cut option" like fl studio. In fl, you can just organise your samples (and synths) in groups to cut off other samples when being hit. It isn't a be all-end all solution, but it works great for drums (definitely gonna try your method as well though, I think it might be better to get some more natural fade out for cymbals)
It's definitely also useful on the ring-outs of percussion rolls, especially timpani. Some libraries ring out endlessly which isn't always the desired outcome. Sometimes I also control roll ring-outs with CC11.
Is there a way to save this setting? I primarily use key swithces and when i switch timp hits to rolls the release switches back to its original position.
The release within the ADSR control in the Kontakt backend and the release knob in the GUI (say in CinePerc) control the same thing but it's not volume. It's how long a sample rings out by default regardless of how long you hold the note. The buttons you see in the GUI are usually just the same as in the backend but pulled to the front. Short notes do not have separate release samples so there wouldn't be a release sample volume to begin with. I'm not sure if there's a control for the volume of the release samples of sustained articulations (it's been a while since I've modified those libraries...) but usually you'd have to mark all the groups in the backend that contain releases and then manually change their volume for each velocity. Often this is however already locked into the script since it's a strong part of the programming and predetermined crossfades etc. - but I'm not really up to date with the latest developments so maybe this has changed over time.
@@AnneKathrinDernComposer Thank you so much for taking the time to provide such a detailed and helpful answer. Love your work and your channel! I just Subscribed.
Not sure what you mean by proper scripting for the releases. Percussion doesn’t have separate release samples (except for the rolls in CinePerc which are fairly unique in the way they were done) and therefore there is no scripting for releases.
@@AnneKathrinDernComposer oh ok.. I thought you mentioned there should be releases scripted into the percussion...may have misunderstood. Thanks for the video...seems easy to adjust if needed.
@@AnneKathrinDernComposer sorry to bother you with a question on this very comment. I am stuck trying to control the release of CinePerc timpani rolls, it doesnt seem to work trying in the different ways you propose. It works fine with all kind of hits, but not with the rolls, whose release remains sometimes for longer than I'd like to. Might this be connected to this uniqueness type of script programming you referred to in this comment? Any chance to control releases in a roll at all? Thanks in any case (and once more for your channel!)
"My fast drums passages always sounded muddy until Anne taught me how to fix it!" Thx again!

Anne.. I’ve listened to literally thousands of videos until I discovered your ones. Extremely useful. Please keep tutorial videos.

thanks great tip, i've been trying to use noise gates with mixed success, will try this
Yes, gating can work too in some cases but I agree, it gives mixed results.
Well holy shit, this will certainly change things! What a great tip, thank you so much!

Thanks for the tip! Is it useful to use it on snare or timpani roll patches? Or do you use it only when you write quick percussive passages? Thanks

What would be wrong with using choke groups with a polyphony of 1?
