New Type of Flag-raising Ceremony at Beijing's Tian'anmen Square Starts on New Year Day

A new version of flag-raising ceremony started the year of 2018 on Monday at the Tian'anmen Square in Beijing, with the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Guard of Honor taking over duties from the People's Armed Police for the first time.
The new version featured eight trumpet soldiers sounding the clarion call for flag raising to usher in the ceremony. The special program drew thousands of people of all ages from all walks of life. Attendees saluted the Chinese national flag until it was hoisted to the top of the flagpole.
The responsibility for guarding China's national flag and firing salute cannons at the Tian'anmen Square was transferred to the PLA from Jan 1, 2018.
Before Jan 1, the ceremony was conducted by the armed police.
