    There are too many reasons why I love YYH. For starters, the main character friendships are all believable. They talk shit to each other and poke fun, but you can tell it's out of love. I really wish more series had their characters interact like Yusuke and co did.

      +TehPiemaygor YYH is one of the most popular older anime out there. If anything, YYH doesn't need more attention, especially considering how many others are forgotten.

      +Ryuma King I have this feeling that YYH is actually more popular / known in japan than it is here. YYH got passed over for the likes of Inyuyasha and DBZ and Sailor Moon here in the US. I mean it's definitely known but I hear no one really bring it up.

      Bleach was good for the first arc, but (unlike YYH) it was horrible at characterization. After (and during) the Soul Society arc they introduced like a billion forgettable characters that you were supposed to remember, like and care about and really sidelined the ones that had been developed previously in favor of these new guys.
      Where as YYH had 4 characters, all incredibly memorable and well developed, and a tight supporting cast who were mostly all well developed (I always thought Yukina deserved a bigger role)

    YU YU HAKUSHO Has been my SECOND FAVORITE ANIME OF ALL TIME for years. Ill always love DBZ for inspiring me to go from a chubby anime fanboy getting bullied to start training and doing MMA but Yu Yu Hakusho I think is Just a Phenomenal SHOW ive rewatched it all the way through at least 17 times in my life. Matter of fact after this semester finishes I know what Im marathoning again. Though I do need to watch Hunter X Hunter since my friends told me they train for strength as well and I always love that ^u^ cause it motivates me to train harder. Great video man!

    Togashi wasn't getting bored with Yu Yu Hakusho. I read that he was being pressured and cornered by his editors and whoever he worked for to move YYH more in the direction of DBZ, but apparently he didn't quite want to do that so they all had a falling out and the manga ended. Therefore the anime did too.

    How did you not bring up how bad ass Kurama and Hiei were in this show? They are two of the best secondary characters in any Shonen series period. And each has their own unique flavor of bad ass. Kurama is an intelligent, but somewhat kind person. He wants to learn his foe's strengths and weaknesses to find the most effective way to beat them (but he's also scary if you really piss him off). And Hiei is a confident arrogant jerk who can actually back up his attitude.

    Always praised the show for its writing and evolving story and characters. I really did miss Kuwabara within the final season during the Makai tournament. He is my favorite, and I understand why he didnt go because unlike most series where "The gang" would stick together, he had is reasons for staying behind or not going to the tournament at all when it was announced.
    All in all the series holds up well and in my opinion is a lot better than most of the short running or long running anime's to date.
    Many anime's have great characters, even newer anime's do even if I do not care for the franchise, but Yu Yu Hakusho's characters and comedy melded together perfectly. You never felt that the series was overdoing it or out of place with its jokes. The bickering between everyone, the trust, what built over this series run, it was pretty damn impressive and ended on a good note and not a cliffhanger like a lot of anime's tend to do.

      +Kamodomon Not even considering the current status of both works YYH is more coherent and self-aware. HxH have some jarring asspulls and plot conveniences. Of course they both share alot of the same issues (they are shounens afterall) but with HxH is just more grating to me. I gave both of them a 7 at the end of the day but YYH is my go-to title.

      Meruem was great too, but just not as much of an interesting antagonist when compared to Toguro and didnt have as much backstory as toguro as well. One was normal and became fucked up, while the other was born fucked up and became more 'normal'. But Toguro is more interesting because he has a back story and he has a more badass personality that many antagonist from other anime seem to lack without it being cheesy.

    Yu Yu hakusho has something that most anime doesnt quite have anymore to me. Thats sincerity. No new anime has that authentic feel of dark shaded environments, well shaded and less cartoony character models and human like personas anymore. This is exemplified in the two versions of Hunter X Hunter. The older version from what ive watched, strikes this direction and style amazingly. The new show, while still good, has a very light look to it that just doesnt grab me. Its too cartoony to me, lacking any maturity that used to give a certain depth to these shows from when i was a kid. Its the down to earth and investive atmosphere that always makes me come back to Hakusho.

    • @DIDA56ify
      @DIDA56ify 8 лет назад

      Yeah Hunter x Hunter was kinda cartoony but the plot is great

    • @Manganization
      @Manganization 8 лет назад +7

      That's more in line with the time both anime came out than now. Hunter x Hunter is supposed to be a light hearted adventure when Gon is involved in contrast to the surprisingly dark world of the series. Nevertheless, it's supposed to feel like an adventure.
      During the time when anime was becoming a thing, it was popular to make certain series darker than it should be. Yu Yu Hakusho benefitted from this, but JoJo Bizarre adventure and Hunter x Hunter did not. Likewise, HxH 2011 didn't quite nail the balance either. Sometimes it's lighthearted when it shouldn't be. Of course, I felt that this was fixed after the Chimera arc and onwards. Despite this I do enjoy the contrast of both version of Hunter x Hunter and JoJo.

    I'm such a mixed bag with shounen.
    YYH has always been a favorite of mine, and there are a lot of others I enjoy like JoJo, Toriko and Saint Seiya.
    but on the flip side some of the anime I absolutely can't sit through are Shounen.
    a lot of what I love about YYH is how quick paced it is and how focused it is on the main group's relationship. all of the characters interact with each other and remain relevant throughout the series, while a lot of other shounen has an annoying habit of extending their cast and never properly characterizing everyone.

    I didn't agree with everything that was stated about Yu Yu Hakusho, but I am biased because YYH is my favorite anime of all time. I personally feel like Chapter black is underrated because of its complexity for the series. It does delve into deep and serious issues like mental health. I was able to appreciate it since I suffered with severe depression when I first watched it. That being said, most parts were very awkward and hard to watch because if it taking such dark turns. I have a huge level of appreciation for this series and I DESPISE it when people talk about wanting it rebooted or continued since Yoshihiro Togashi's wife continued Sailor Moon. YYH was great as it is alone, some of the art I didn't care for. Other than that, for its time, it was excellent and great footing for others to take inspiration from for the new anime we know today. While I have never seen HxH, I do take it personally when people put that above YYH. YYH was before and the first, obviously it wouldn't be perfect, but HxH wouldn't be what it ended up as without YYH. Give credit where credit is due is all I'm saying.

      +Ray Caburnay I know it's so weird that that scene looks good because the doctor is probably one of the dumber villains, though he was the only human fight that really highlighted the struggle Yusuke was having with killing humans.

      My favorite moment in the Chapter Black arc has to be Puu's transformation and Yusuke's rebirth. The sound effects, for one, are so damn intense; Puu's cry made me shiver the first time I heard it. Then, there's the subtlety of Yusuke's changes into a demon. He's animated with slightly more pronounced canines, and his hair seems to have more volume. It's great foreshadowing to the revelation of his actual demon form later as a Toshin. Plus, that arc has the only scene of Hiei genuinely laughing, and it's absolutely priceless just to see his face in that moment.

    The Three Kings arc seemed like it had potential to be amazing. Too bad it was rushed to an early end.
    Everything up to the end of the part with Kurama and Yomi seemed to building up to some pretty awesome shit. Then when the focus shifted back to Yusuke things took a nosedive. Raizen suddenly dies early, and Yusuke proposes the final tournament to Yomi (who goes from a mysterious and interesting guy with a lot of power, to a guy who is just looking for a good fight).
    Although I can easily see the final episode actually happening after everything that was SUPPOSED to go down in Three Kings arc went down. Got hit in the feels when the opening song came on at the end.
    I hear that Shonen JUMP was overworking Togashi and he abruptly ended the series as a big "fuck you" to them.
    I can't say for sure what it was though.
    Regardless, I absolutely loved this series. Easily one of my favorite anime of all time.
    HunterxHunter still takes the cake though ;)

    • @masteroflag
      @masteroflag 9 лет назад +6

      Oddly that's why Hunter x Hunter is still going even though any normal magazine would've told him to end it after the second long hiatus.
      His new deal with Hunter allows him to just stop when he feels overworked and come back whenever unlike with say one piece where Oda takes a week or two off now and then along with a shrunk page count to keep up now that he's older and his smoking and stress for years is catching up with him.
      It's the plight of these mangaka since unlike in the American system they can't just hand art duties completely to assistants that rotate out of just be writers when they need time off.

      +Jorge Perez I concur the 3 Kings arc had potential to be great. I would have liked to seen Yusuke, Yomi and Mukuro wage war against each other instead of another tournament.
      To my knowledge, the reason Togashi sensei rushed the ending was due to him feeling ill at the time or having recovered from feeling ill and just wanting to finish the series.

    Anytime I wish to smoke some nostalgia... Yu Yu Hakusho is my go to nostalgia drug. I've watched this show back when I was a kid, and around 2010 I did a marathon on the whole series from start to finish. The English dub is a gold mine for twists and turns as well as humor. Though I will agree with you on Chapter Black's lack of good and fluid animation like the first 66 episodes, I still think all 112 episodes were great in their own way. Another thing, was that after a while of watching it... I began to realize that, most shonen really were lacking in what Yu Yu Hakusho, Fullmetal Alchemist, Dragon ball and hell even Digimon brought into the fray. Characters that are capable of holding the show on their own, without too many people to assist them at one time.

    My big sister is a gigantic fan of the series. I remember she used to collect the DVD's individually as they came out, and we would always watch them together since I was just as hyped for the show as she was! She still owns the discs but had to get rid of the original covers along the way sadly.
    We also used to turn down the volume of the TV and dub over the characters voice's ourselves and make them say silly things. We had this running gag where Kurama was always tripping out on some kind of drug like a hippy. (I was going for weed because of all the plant imagery) Plus you never knew what kind of whacky thing that was gonna come out of Yusuke or Kuwabara's mouths. Thinking back on it- it was so easy to make ourselves have laughing fits while doing our gag-dubs because the timing of the animation, the over-the-top movements, and and the hilarious faces always gave way for some of the best reactions to our goofy ad-libbing.
    As for the show itself; is there really anything I can say that hasn't already been said? It's flippin' fantastic!

    I don't know how the english dub was, but I love Yu Yu as it was aired here in Brazil. I don't know what the dub directors had in mind, but they let the actors loose. Maybe they though "Well, another japanese cartoon. Do whatever you want." or something like that.
    The end result was a dub that used a lot of slangs and stupid expressions from the 80's and early 90's and didn't had much caution in keeping a perfect grammar or pronounciation usage of portuguese. It's awesome.

      It may have been that I discovered it at 11, at the time Naruto was running heavily through the nerd waves (like 10 years ago), but it's a very "odd"-flavored show; it's got the weird charm of DB or One Piece, but simply feels more intelligent. It's got an occasionally creepy atmosphere about it (dark+whimsical);
      I have gotten sick of it, having waited 6 years for new material. They've come out with a volume or two after I departed from anime/manga as a whole (early 2010), but really, the hiatuses will kill you. The advertising for this show has brought in a new batch of (intelligent) 12 year old kids, too. It *is* a "shonen" manga, after all.

    Yu Yu is actually one of my favorite animes of all time, long running Shonen or otherwise. The powers scaled, but one thing I always like about it better than every other anime is how formidable the secondary characters were.
    Obviously, Urameshi was the strongest, but it wasn't like the other characters just stalled for time until he showed up. If it wasn't for Kurama and Kuwabara, they would have lost to team Masho (sorry for bad American spelling). If it wasn't for Genkai, not sure how the team would have gotten past the Dr. Ichigaki team. And the team did the entire semi-finals without him! It is so refreshing after being raised on DBZ to see secondary characters not just hold their own, but actually be useful and helpful in battles.

    • @UnifiedEntity

      No way man. YYH generally have a lot of care for their secondary characters. Kuwabara wasnt necessarily thrown out. The last arc, was in the demon world. You need to remember Kuwabara is the only human out of the 4, he has other concerns, but still made an appearance in a very important moment in the anime. And at the end im pretty sure Kuwabara is with the other 3 at the start of the next demon tournament?

      Goku’s depth
      Goku values his strength because of the events of his life. After losing his parental figure to a “monster”, his helpessness created a will to grow more powerful to defend himself and those around him. He trains to push himself to new heights and defeats the greatest evil in the world, Piccolo, and is then effortlessly defeated by his brother Raditz, When he asks Krillin to spare Vegeta in the Saiyan Saga, he does not out of morality, but out of curiosity of how far he can push himself. He calls himself selfish for this, but makes the choice anyways. This is the first step of Goku’s change as a person, Goku is pure of heart by the standards of the Kinto’un and yet he is innately flawed. His pure mindset is a both a blessing and a curse. He sees the best in people, he wants to be the best he can be, and he assumes that those around him should share his values. Goku puts his son into a situation that he didn’t realize Gohan wasn’t prepared for, and even gives Cell a senzu because hes so confident. Depsite his flaws, Goku is extremly self aware. Towards the end of the Cell Games, he sacrifices himself and apologies to Gohan for not making the best choices. He even chooses to say dead because he realizes that his existence has drawn seveal enemies to Earth, and during the Buu saga, he tries to give the mantle of Earth’s defender to Goten and Trunks that he cant fight all of the battles anymore, even if deep down he wants to. Goku literally abstained from fighting, the one thing he has dedicated his life to his son. Kid Goku is a child all alone in the woods away from society and his lack of understanding of modern technology like cars which he describes as “monsters” is a result of his lack of indoctrination, speaking of indoctrination Kid Goku is a pretty great embodiment of curiosity, and freedom his curiosity is a result of his lack of teachings of subjects in modern society (lack of indoetrination), The flying nimbus is an magic yellow that Goku uses to transport those who have a pure heart are able to ride on the flying nimbus , clouds symbolize clear thinking and emotional purity these fit Goku well seeing how he is pure of heart and has strong set belifes on what is wrong or right, the nimbus also correlates to he freedom in the many way Goku is free is a set purpose or place Identity crisis
      Identity crisis is the questioning in ones own idenity, once Goku sees Raditz and Raditz unfolds the story to him and his friends about the saiyans their heritage and occupation and just on general how bad of people they are, Goku is quick to say that he isn’t a saiyan and that he is Son Goku from earth. This neglectance of identity isn’t surprising seeing how Goku and the sayians are opposites and have drastically different morals,
      Goku’s self acceptance
      Goku’s self acceptance coming from the realization that his saiyan heritage is something that can be used to good in the world to bring peace one might say the saiyan were ruthless and violent and ransacked peoples worlds to sell them when he accepts that’s he is indeed a sayian and tells Frieza he’s the super saiyan Son Goku, echoed through his speech “I am the light in the darkness” Goku here can be referring to himself the good out of the bad. The one good saiyan out of the many evil saiyans, Affect on world
      Goku’s affect on his world is the affect on his friends who eventually became his enemies and the whole physical world, Goku in the cell saga knew that if he kept residing on earth his friends said everyone else would be in danger so it was convenient he could use transporting cell to the king kai’s place and also just leave earth for the sake of peace In moral philosophy, deontological ethics or deontology is the normative ethical theory that morality of an action should be based on whether that action itself is right or wrong under a series of rules, rather than based in the consequences of the action, Goku has always kept this philosophy with him since a kid and this connects with his sacrifice great. Goku always had his morals over the consequences we can see this a lot with his interactions with vegetea ginyu and frieza, We saw many instances when Goku has put his morals above the consequences. For example, with his battle with Vegeta he could’ve killed Vegeta and bring peace. But he chose to let him alive because of his moral code and to fight him again. With Frieza he had the chance to kill him and yet he let him live becuase again he let his morals take over him and didn’t see the consequences

      Now it’s time for paralles between goku and vegeta Battle stance
      In saiyan saga goku and vegeta stance and position are contrast of each other. While Goku sgands below Vegeta showing that he is the low class warrior also shows his view on strength. Goku was always taught that there was always someone stronger than him while Vegeta was taught he was destined to be the strongest and Vegeta looking down shows that he believes that he is the strongest and his strength is complete. While Goku looking up shows how he believes that his strength us limitless and that there are others stronger than him. Both of their stance show how they were trained, Goku stance presents the turtle hermit school, they move low and find a weakness and strategies, Vegeta represent the elite saiyan training and how the fight full offensive seeing how both hands show are prepared to strike in showing his nature as a saiyan
      Spirit bomb vs great ape
      Goku and Vegeta main attacks contrast each other in the saiyan saga. The spirit bomb is said to take energy from your enviorment and goku being a saiyan yet denies his nature and stays with his nurture or his enviorment and it is also said that the spirit bomb is stronger when it absorbs the sun. Vegeta on the other hand uses his saiyan nature as his trump card which is great ape form and it is to be said to be powered up by the moon showing how goku symbolises the sun (being clear and self) while vegeta symbolize the moon (being a shadow and blocks the light) these two attacks symbolise their nature vs nature
      Identity crisis
      Both Goku and Vegeta were confusion on who they were. Goku was in conflict with his saiyan nature and we can see him in conflict with his own morals and identity where he spares nappa out of the goodness of his hear (nurture) while he spares Vegeta because he wants to fight him again (nature). We can see more of this in his fight with Frieza and how he toys with him, says he’s going to kill him, and is drowning in anger (nature) he also speares him, gives him ki, lets him leave (nurture). Vegeta is going throught the same thing but is apposite as well. Vegeta is in conflict with his humanity and his saiyan nature. He can’t see to understand who he truly is which leads him to Majin Vegeta and Vegeta putting up a facade while deep down he isn’t him true self. He even goes to greater lengths and abandon his own mortality to gain strength. What’s great is that they were facing the person who had the biggest impact on them in their entire lives. Goku to frieza and vegeta to goku. Another is how it contast their nature vs nurture dynamic where vegeta was in conflict with his nurture while goku was in conflict with his nature
      Nationalism vs patriroism
      Vegeta and Goku ideology both contrast each other as well. Vegeta ideology being nationalism and Goku being patriotism shows how they both took pride and identified with their race. This difference is how they toke in reactions when they witness the flows of the saiyan race tries to deny it and live in this false ideology that they are the perfect warrior which would cause him to go majin vegeta (trying to return the status of the saiyan race which vegeta believes are the perfect warrior) What I love about this part of the dynamic is how it showed the difference of Goku and Vegeta in terms of being free. Goku believing that humanity can move forward hows how free goku is while vegeta can get over the past and is blind by it

      HxH was remade so they could do the Chimera ant saga without trying to tie it to an anime that's over 10 years old.
      YYH was completely animated and (as Digibro said) stuff was even added compared to the manga to give it a more well rounded ending.
      Let's be real. A remake is probably not going to be as good as what we got.

      It just depends on who does it. If Studio Bones was in charge, the fights would be amazing, if you had A1 do it on the other hand, it would be very lackluster. It just depends on who does it, and the voice actors.

      there’s no need for a remake imo. the series is fine as it is. good art/animation, great music, perfect dub, no filler, etc. a remake would likely do more bad than good.

    As someone who watched a very poorly subbed version of Yu Yu Hakusho years before it made it's way stateside it is so great to see the success and fandom that it has found outside of Japan after all these years. My favorite anime, and the things you touched on about the animation I have always felt and the sound effects were always so exaggerated that they got me so hyped for the fights.

      On the surface, yes. Both are about 14 year old protagonists fighting spirits. But Danny Phantom draws more inspiration from the Silver to Bronze Age of comic books. DP is almost entirely episodic (even when they start introducing plot threads) whereas YYH tends to tell overarching stories (even though it starts off largely episodic).

    Personally i like the way Chapter Black was simplified in anination. It was much more depressing. Very Dark and Bleak, in animation and plot, with the world slowly going to hell by the 3rd episode in the saga. I also enjoyed the Demon World Saga, Raizen is probably my 2nd fav character only after Kurama. Ending it with Yusuke losing was perfect. The last episode was very harsh, real, and it was beautiful.

    I don't think that was completely fair to the chapter black arc. Things like Gormet vs Kurama and the yaminate were epic, and Kuwabara's end game blew me away, and for the time I felt was cutting edge. Even with fist blurs, there were still a lot of individual strikes and so many different settings that it more than made up for the declining art. I honestly didn't notice until the Three Kings lol

      +Digibro The original was great, yes. I guess as someone who absolutely loved the original HxH anime I adored what they did with the 2011 version, but if they could do better than the original YYH it'd be absolutely stunning!

    • @angelp8469
      @angelp8469 9 лет назад

      +Digibro I don't know, Madhouse could do a really amazing job with the anime, but that doesn't mean they should. This one does not need to be remade.

    • @Trixiethegoldenwitch
      @Trixiethegoldenwitch  9 лет назад +6

      +Zap224 To me it just seemed like the main incentive to redo HxH was that the story hadn't been completed/caught up to before, whereas YYH has been. I know that former Madhouse president/current MAPPA president Masao Maruyama has plans to adapt more early 90s manga that had incomplete adaptations before (they're currently doing Ushio and Tora) but since the YYH anime is already considered a classic, I don't think he'd want to touch it.

    • @Kamodomon
      @Kamodomon 9 лет назад +1

      +Zap224 Nope. YYH can't really be improved with just a visual makeover, in my opinion. A lot of it's elements are of the time and messing with it may mess the overall flow of the show. There's also the issue with how I don't believe there's much fanfare for a show such as this returning. Perhaps a movie or OVA, but not a serialized remake.

      Dale Gribble hxh is not more light-hearted, at the beginning it is but it gets just as dark as yu yu in the phantom troupe and especially chimera ant arcs. That being said I say hxh is better because it has better world building, doesn't have plotholes, and because togashi cut the three kings arc short. Initially the three kings arc was meant to have a war after raizen died, but togashi pulled a togashi and cut it short.

    Man I remember watching it in the early 2000s as a kid. Maybe about 2 months ago I watched the whole show on RUclips and finished it for the first time ever. I LOVE dragon ball z and Naruto but this was the most hooked on any anime I ever been. Story line was amazing. It ties you in emotionally. The end is perfect and the last episode makes you understand the opening theme song. This is the most perfect anime I've ever seen. I will come back and watch it all again in years to come. But everytime I think about the show I get emotional because I feel like I lost a part of my childhood by finishing the show but I don't regret it.
