One of the most fascinating things about the HxH anime/manga is that it provides a real sense of danger, where anybody can die at any time, including the main characters. Another thing is how every villain is likable and are not just one dimensional characters like many other shounen animes.
Actually, it`s funny that the anime/manga is categorized as a Shounen, because of its gory content and lack of many cliches that all shounen follow.

I really want to see whats going to happen to Gon now that Killua wont be around to protect him and him losing his Nen. I don't think that's the last were going to see of Gon's Nen. Gon's finial Nen form showed us one potential of his power but now i think when Gon rediscovers his Nen it will be different. They forced it out of him the last time because they couldn't do it the proper way so this time Gon has the time to perfect it the natural way. I sense a time skip as well in this anime's future. God i wish they'd show more. TT

  • @lifeloverNorris
    @lifeloverNorris 9 лет назад +257

Good video. Also worth pointing out that Hunter X Hunter 2011 actually develops villains very, very well, sometimes even more than main characters. It's unique that villains like Phantom Troupe, Hisoka and Mereum all have multi-faced personalities who doesn't merely want to destroy the whole world or conquer shit but actually have their own ambitions, develop throughout their arcs and basically drives the whole story forward. I love how Hunter X Hunter 2011 manages to create a very subtle love story in the Chimera Ant (people who watched till the end knows what I'm referring to) which in the surface seem more like brutal, fighting arc. Hunter X Hunter 2011 also doesn't shy away from lengthy dialogue to flesh out their characters and their motivations, and is very rewarding following the story till the end.

Before I continue, let me clarify that I also like most of the villains in this anime, mostly Chrollo and Mereum. With that said, some of my problems with the show somewhat center around them.
I was kind of bummed that Gon never got to fight Mereum, seeing that he was pretty much the strongest villain, though I guess his fight with Pitou was well enough.
I never really liked how Gon never got to defeat Hisoka before he lost his powers, it almost seems like a wasted build up.
And my biggest bone to pick, the Phantom Troupe. It's been a while since I saw the show, so I don't remember all the little details, but if I remember right Kurapika never really got his revenge against them. Don't get me wrong, I like some members of the Troupe, but it's kind of disappointing that they got off scott-free.

    • @horaciogovea7433
      @horaciogovea7433 8 лет назад +13

man I am kind of dissapointed by your comment which let's me think that you were not fully understanding the greatness of this show; #1 Gon couldn't possibly fight meruem for the simple reason that it wasn't his purpose and he couldn't stand a chance even in his rage mode. It follows the shows logic and doesn't simply apply the rule the hero fights the biggest vilain.
#2 Same thing Gon was no match for Hisoka before the chimera ant arc and in this arc there was no reason for Hisoka to show up ! It's again following HxH's logic.
#3 We have yet to see the phantom squad again we got a hint of what will happen between them and kurapika in the last episode. (And Kurapika beat Uvogin so yeah part of his revenge.)

...It really hurt to see Gon just murder the crap out of Pitou. Hurt in a good way, mind you, in that it shows how well the show engages the emotions of someone invested in the characters. I completely understood Gon's reasons but as someone who used to be so insistent that no one was beyond helping, even sociopaths like Genthru; for him to kill someone who was beginning to develop more of a conscious for revenge...It was sad seeing what Gon was becoming and gut wrenching when he snapped at Killua.

You had me thinking for a moment thats true until I went through all of the characters in the Ant Ark and boy does that idea of there being no clear good or bad guys fall flat on its fucking face.
Hell you don't even have to go that far, the first Ark has Hisoka and while he does help Gon in some things that is purely for his own satisfaction and if he goes too long he will actually go into murder with draws as if its a drug to him.
In fact the only reason 'bad guys' in other arks such as Bomber or Hisoka don't automatically feel like bad guys is because of how death in hunter x hunter is handled, which is that its such a common thing that No one cares unless its someone very close to them. ( Seriously one episode like 10 people die right in front of the main group and they are cheerfully eating and having a good time like an hour later after totally forgetting people died not 5 feet away from them. )

Gon saw the bank Ruptcy guy as being a 'Good Guy', too much of one in fact. He also saw the Cat girl as evil even while she was trying to save some ones life.
But Morality in HxH is strange, its not just Gon who doesn't see people who do bad things are evil its pretty much the rest of the cast as well. Especially during the ant ark where a number of ants get off scott free after murdering and feeding thousands of people to a ant monster.
Cheats and murderers aren't seen as that bad of people in the show, its only when you attack some ones friends personally does it suddenly become a bad thing worth killing them over and Gon is a huge hypocrite in this department near the end of the anime.

This review was perfect minus one thing: The Nen system.
Let's face it, majority of Shonen anime have a dull, nonsensical mana system like chakra in Naruto, Ki in DBZ, reaitsu in Bleach, etc, but Nen is incredibly diverse and complex with all the techniques, the counter techniques, the Nen types, the limitations and restrictions, etc.
Naturally, you'd have to avoid spoilers, but alittle talk about Nen would've been nice. Had I never seen HxH before, I would've thought to myself after watching this video:
"Wow, this anime sounds great. Too bad it probably has a shitty magic system though"
Anyway, enough about the negative nitpicking. Your video was excellent, and came across as professional. You stated everything (almost everything) that I would've said if I were trying to convince someone of this show's worth, and THEN some. You've earned a subscriber.

I still agree with all of the things I said, but I found it funny that my first comment to this dude was mostly nitpicking, when 2 months later he becomes one of my favorite reviewers.
I never in all my days expected the words 'Opeth" and "Agalloch" to both be uttered in an anime related anything. This guy is my friend James reincarnated, I swear.

Melodeath Ted On the contrary, the one that's nonsensical is Nen. Author can pull off anything because he didn't set any universal limitations on Nen; he does it only on case by case level, which means he can do anything he wants when creating individual abilities, and that's nonsensical. The great example are chimera ants (esp. at the beginning of arc) which shouldn't have stood any chance against nen users, and yet they're somehow incredibly powerful and complex right out of the birth of its species.
In HxH abilities are completely random (rules on individual level give it illusion of having sense), while in, for example, Naruto, there is a clear division between types of abilities, and the roots i.e. ways they came into being are explained in great detail and go back in time for centuries. While Naruto comes full circle with its story and the way its world is made, in HxH strong users of abilities are made up into the story without any backbone, i.e. supporting story and history. Sure, after point of creation everything is amazing, but it doesn't change the fact that the framework is random. That's the main reason Kishimoto and his complex writing is way better than Togashi's.

The lack of kurapika in this video is staggering. I'm really surprised you didn't even speak once about the absolute badassery he brings to the anime as a whole, including the fact that the Yorknew city arc includes some of the most well-presented and intellectually sound episodes in the entire series, and frankly of any anime ever made.

Ah, I get what you mean. However, I meant as more of a reference to the fact that kurapika is extremely level-headed, to the point in which he makes up for most of the long conversation scenes that include talks about tactics and such, just because he is almost abnormally skilled in the understanding of fighting techniques. For example, in his duel with a certain villain towards the middle of his arc. You touch on it in the video, and it's super interesting, especially when used as frequently as it is in the 148 episodes.

This may be biased but HxH easily surpasses all of the big three (naruto, bleach, one piece) in potential, emotion, and intelligence. The unique action fighting scenes and the narration really set this anime off and this may be spoiler but if you've ever read the manga. The world has the potential to be quite MASSIVE on Toriko and one piece status. This anime always seems to keep me guessing unlike the predictable big 3. In HxH I never seem to know who is going to die and who is going to win. It also involves human morale and certain views of life people are sometimes unwilling to address in society. HxH is intriguing, it's action packed, and certainly one of the best out there. We should give this anime more attention so togashi can get off his ass xD

Unlike the big three, it's one of the only shounen series I've seen that essentially gets better each and every arc. Bleach and Naruto (I haven't seen much One Piece, honestly) objectively declined in quality from the beginning to the end, every once in a while getting interesting again before going back down; but HunterXHunter defies this trend by improving constantly. The last full arc, Chimera Ant, was unquestionably the best of the series, and it came nearly 200 chapters after the series started.

    SPOILERS
Hunter X Hunter is one of the most original animes I have ever seen. The superpowers and concepts are incredibly unique, the creator does his best to invoke, subvert, and avert every shonen trope in the book all at the same time, and the characters are some of the best in the series. Just when you think a character might get dry or stale, there's something that pulls them into a territory that makes them awesome again.
I was just about ready to give up on Gon until the Chimera Ant arc where the tropes that usually apply to the Kid Hero and Idiot Hero for shonen are subverted, and subverted HARD, making Gon into much less of a Marty Stu and more of a relatable character.
I thought nothing of Knov until I saw him breakdown in the anime, with the VA giving a tremendous performance.
I wrote off Netero as just "The old guy whose stronger then he looks" like Master Roshi or half the old characters in Toriko, but his powers, his conversation with the king, his sacrifice, and just the line "You think I need both hands to pray?" brought him back to amazing.
I wrote off the Chimera Ants as just unstoppable villains with little to no personality. Villains that the creator set up as unbeatable. But then more and more I saw that they were getting just as much, if not more development then other characters. We find out more about Colt or Shirabouf then we do about Hisoka or Ging.
Hunter X Hunter is an incredibly well written, well done manga and anime, (Along with one of the hypest anime intros EVAH!) and the day that a new chapter is finally released, I will cheer for joy that some of my favorite characters will be continuing their journeys

Everyone in this show do whatever they please. So making them do something that doesnt fit their character wouldn't work and I get that. I get why they go to meteor city in the first place and help clear out the ants. But it'd be pushing it to write them in just for the sake of writing them in. I do wish we get see them more, but I'm glad they didn't overly write them in for no reason other than them being badasses. It would make them lose badassery points

Personally, I'd recommend exactly the opposite. I think the best cure for this feeling is to go in a completely different direction and try something as different as possible from the style you're pining away for. You're not going to find something that matches up to HxH, so you just need to let the feeling fade. Better to get *interested* in something new and unfamiliar than trying to fill an unfillable void. I'd recommend Nichijou, or Clannad.

I typically don't like long shonuen anime. I barely liked Naruto (I have a soft spot for Bleach) and despise One Piece so when my friend tried convincing me to watch this I was like "EHHHHHHHHHH" but then I found out it was written by the guy who's married to Naoko Takuechi (Sailor moon creator, I love sailor moon) So I decided to give it a try and it did take me like a good few months to finish it but thats only cause I marathoned up to Meruem's birth and then stopped because I was kinda trauamatized and wanted to pretend what had happened didn't actually happen. Having recently forced myself through the rest of the show I am so glad I did because fucking Meurem and Komugi are my favorite characters now. I remember seeing comments about people loving Mereum and being super confused because he was just a crazy asshole who killed people and oh my god I was wrong, so wrong. I cried like a bitch twice during episode 143 and episode 144 and then again in episode 148 because of that FUCKING scene where they showed like everyone that was in the show.

HxH is basically a perfect shounen series. To expand upon the whole "side characters are discarded at the beginning of a new arc" thing, I think it's important to consider the alternative. While we might want to know more about what happens to, say, the Phantom Troupe, if a series continues to keep all of its side characters around you end up with a Bleach situation. And no one wants that. HxX chooses to instead introduce new characters and only focus on them for a single arc. I think this is better in the end, because it allows us to enjoy a bunch of interesting characters without growing tired of them (again, like Bleach or something).
As for the battles, the most important thing for a battle manga is for its battles to "make sense." A viewer should be aware of the abilities the characters have and the outcome of a particular fight should make sense in light of that. Ideally, a good battle shounen series will be one where the viewer can have fun imagining the outcome of various match-ups. Most shounen series fuck this up, with their characters having poorly defined abilities and just arbitrarily being stronger/faster than each other as the plot demands. The only series I can think of that really do this right are Hunter x Hunter, World Trigger, and early Naruto. In each of those series, you know the abilities characters have and they use them in creative and interesting ways to win fights.

I used to be really worried about Hunter x Hunter remaining unfinished.
I thought that Togashi would just up and die and leave the story unfinished. I realize now that attitude was selfish and kind of shitty. Hunter x Hunters world is the type of setting that even if the manga remained unfinished forever I would be happy with what we were given. It almost feels like a tabletop RPG book. All the locales feel so alive and the characters live a life of their own. HxH will forever be in my top favorite anime/manga. That said I hope mr Togashi gets better and continues the manga. The premise of the Dark continent arc sounded really intriguing in the manga.

i tried watching the original anime a few months ago because i thought the 2011 version was a continuation rather than a remake and found it to be extremely slow paced and instantly dropped it, but gave the 2011 version a try once i found out it was a remake.

You pretty much nailed why I love HxH so much. No filler besides 2 recap episodes (episodes 13 and 26), so much strategy and tactics in the fights when they happen, and the fantastically developed characters. I always kind of take issue with people simply dismissing HxH as a battle shonen when it hardly ever relies on physical strength in the battles in the first place. Also, thank you for recognizing that Killua and Gon's friendship is one of the best relationships in anime, ever. It is so genuine and beautiful! It's just a masterful series and I hope more people go watch it. If only someone in North America would license it and give me some HxH merch because there hardly is any and it sucks! :'(

Jason M I feel like Gon got physically stronger after being introduced to nen as well, though. Plus, Gon is an enhancer, so he's able to enhance his strength far more than Killua is. But I guess Killua would still win in a one-on-one battle, just considering that his abilities are far more varied and efficient than Gon's one jankengu ability.

I think a big part of it is how human the characters are. For example, even though he's a badass assassin with a dark past, I can easily imagine Killua watching a comedy movie, asking a girl on a date, crying at a funeral, etc. Take the equivalent Naruto character (Sasuke), and he's incredibly 2D. I can't imagine him doing anything except training.

Hunter Exam arc: Great start to an amazing story
Heaven's Arena arc: Great battle arc
Phantom Troupe: Delves into the dark and depressing aspect of this story that is usually covered up by the happy-go-lucky tone that was set up from the start. Easily one of the best arcs in the series.
    Greed Island: Wack as fuck.
Chimera Ant arc: The best arc within the entire story. It's dark, gritty, action-packed, and incredibly heartbreaking on a multitude of accounts.
13th Hunter Chairman Election arc: Good arc, developed on relations within the Zoldyck family, and gave some much needed characterization to the Zodiacs (namely Ging and Pariston). More of a mini arc than anything else.

This one is far different than say, Naruto, One Piece, or Dragon Ball. The beginning may start out seeming like it will be more of the same, but it will quickly take a huge turn. Not to mention the Anime actually ends below 150 episodes, unlike the others I listed lol. And whlie the Manga is technically still going, it's on Hiatus for god knows how long, and the Anime ended in a spot that actually works really well as an ending, so no worries if you don't wanna wait for the manga to come back lol. The actual animation is beautiful, the writing and general world-building in Hunter X Hunter is really well done. Music is good. If you DON'T like the norm for Shounen anime, then I really think you will like this.

Probably for me the best part of HXH is......Shipping Gon and Killua....xd.
Its looks so "natural" to the environment of the series and looking that way the focus of HXH it really open even more drama on Some parts, like Chimera Arc (in the castle siege), or Greed island (near Bisque appearing).
IMO the HXH 1999 had a real shonen ai focus on gon x killua, but the 2011 just deluded it a bit just to not being too shonen ai to the spectator.
Then this is just a bonus on the plot, the series is great for itself.

In 2011 they took all the Killua/Gon subtext and put it in the Hunterpedia omake segments after each episode, and then expanded it until it was almost fanservice. Right on the freaking whiteboard behind them in every segment is their names under an umbrella, which is the Japanese equivalent of carving you and your love's name into a tree surrounded by a heart. They even kissed in one of them.

      Martha Tedla
I don't think he would ever come right out and say that. But unlike most shounen artists, he's not afraid of playing with gender and sexuality, so it's possible. Just look at Sensui and Itsuki in YYH; they were obviously a couple, if a bit one-sided.
Honestly, I can see Alluka being a transgender 10-year-old being more controversial than a couple of gay 12-year-olds.

    • @darkhelel1109
      @darkhelel1109 8 лет назад +1

      Yonkage
But is all about Japanese controversial decisions,Since usually shonen characters are depicted as "perfect life form examples",these two being on a couple being so young it would be very hard to handle to their community, and also to global community which follow HXH...I mean, now you have for example,Owari no Seraph, but since the story is kinda cannon from the start the relationship in a more explicit way,is more accepted, more when theyre a bit more grow up than gon an killua.
Then other case which could have been similar IMO was naruto,I think togashi from the start wished to end in SasuNaru, but towards shippuden he noticed that the series got massive impact and also because the producers he had to change the story to a more accepted ending(which in the last battle is kinda "romantic" in some way too....).

The first part of Naruto was more than inspired by HxH (borderline ripoff).
Most notably the hunter exam, Sasuke is very similar to Kurapika, with both character (later) and entire backstory but not as well written, chackra and nen, the akatsuki and the phantom troupe, Tsunade and Bisky, Sasuka and Killua retrival and so on.

    • @docterfantazmo
      @docterfantazmo 9 лет назад

I've heard people make this argument a few times but personally it was always the under tones of war and lose that really pushed early Naruto further for me, I don't know if HXH has that but I suppose I'll find out. I never gave HXH a chance before as I never liked the aesthetics, I understand the mishmash of styles is supposed to hint at a this wider world but the uniform look of Naruto (again to do with it's military themes) is what I tend to prefer. However it turns out it will be interesting.

No, you're not. It really depends on your values. As someone who thinks the writing and storytelling in LoGH is so far ahead of the chaff that there is no second best, it's clear I value writing and storytelling. Both were done much better in the 2003 anime than in Brotherhood, at least for the majority of the series. FMA 2003 is more re-watchable. I only watch Brotherhood for His Excellency, The Fuhrer King Bradley.

I dont know how to describe it, but brotherhood feels in some parts so goofy that it takes me out of the mood, im not saying jokes are bad, but jokes put in some parts can ruin the tension. My favorite part of the old anime was when ed cross the door and ends in our world during the world war and planes where attacking the city. The music, the images, that gave me chills.

No. You might like the new show better, but I almost guarantee you would never say the older anime had no redeeming value.
I liked FMA original quite a bit. The ending was disheartening, but overall it was a good show. But if I watched FMAB first? ....naaa I wouldn't probably finish the original in that situation unless I was obsessed with the show.

This is a misinformed opinion. I'm sure if you watched only the first 2 episodes of Madoka Magica, you would treat it as another magical girls show and not one with a dark story.

I disagree on the fact that you said my opinion was misinformed lol. I know that Brotherhood was different story-wise I just wasn't feeling it. Also I'm busy. So if a show can't get me hooked within 2 eps then I'm out.

I agree with so many things you said. The world Hunter x Hunter created was so immersive, that's one reason I liked it so much.. the action was intricate, the characters felt genuine, the character design was really diverse, the plot kept moving, and everything looked really nice. I don't watch a lot of Shounen Jump, so I was hesitant to even watch it, but I fell in love with Gon in the first episode and stuck around, and now it's one of my favorites. I could talk about it forever ^-^ but none of my friends watch anime, so thank you for this video.

I'm super glad that someone else likes to hear Just Awake. That ED was music to my ears at the start of the series.

There has never been a show that more closely resonates with me that hxh and it's one of the most memorable anime I've ever seen. To me shows like My Hero Academia even seem kinda dull after hxh just because of how attached I've grown of the characters and how well written it is. It holds a place really close to my heart through how emotional it is, it really remains in your mind having watched all of it within like 4 days I gotta say.
And now I'm desperate as fuck for a new anime, it could just be the second season or a new one altogether, as long as it's developed by the same people. I feel like there's enough manga material for them to at least start towards bringing back the series

im glad that there were no spoilers in this video, at the time of watching this im near the end of the Chimera Ant ark and the closest thing to a spoiler was you talking about a huge final battle at the end which to be honest i already expected
