That's the misterious and unique power of pure artists and their art: they can be relevant and engaging even 100, 200 years after they are gone.
I am Italian and "discovered" Bill Hicks' and George Carlin material from the latest 80s when I was in my twenties, in 2006-2007. To me, their routines sounded more current and accurate than any other work I'd heard before, and those routines were already 20-25 years old when I first listened to them.
Look at their material today: it is even more relevant than back then!
True artists embrace the entire human condition, they speak for generations and to generations, and you can always get how good their points are and learn from them if you are willing to listen to them carefully.
Fran is a true artist, that's why she sounds incredibly interesting :)

Having not seen her in interview before this - for the posting of which, thank you - I'd not realised that she had such beauty, nor that the wit - which I had long admired in print - was in the moment delivered so instantly, and with such rapier timing. And isn't 36.10 resonant! Thank you, Ms Lebowitz, for this laser light-show to divert and entrance us through these dark days.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY FRANCES ANN LEBOWWITZ ; born October 27th, 1950 in Morristown, New Jersey
    72 years young!!
Just finished watching this compilation this morning!!What are the odds it would be on your birthday?? What a treat to see you and Dave, my all time favorite host!!!
It was Soooo cool to see you and Dave become good friends over the years!!
Between you and me….. I think Dave had a secret crush on you.
After watching this, I can understand why!!
You’re a entrancing human being; yeah, probable hell to live with, but no doubt a loyal friend who wraps herself in layers of honesty.
Fran, at 72, I think you are as insightful, hilarious, and just as gorgeous with that iconic crooked smile and sparkling eye today as back then!
……… thank you in advance for your work ( I’m just discovering your work) Stay well. I’m about to catch up on some of your newest projects.
Lunch is on me if I ever run into you in New York!……..
    PS
    ……….. loved the sweaters!!!!!

Letterman kept focusing on her vocation as an author when in reality she's a public speaker. She really only wrote 2 books and that's all he focused on. Since she never wrote again, her appearances diminished. Squandered opportunity but 2nd and 3rd slot guests only get about 5 mins, so there's not a lot you can do in that time except rehash the same old tropes.

  • @7deepbreaths.sounds

I virtually knew nothing about Fran Liebowitz until this marvelous collection of appearances on the Letterman show .. although I am certain I watched at least a few of these broadcasts when they aired...just didn't realize her significance at the time. She is truly amazing and gives us such a glorious insight into the work and life of an author, writer and independent thinker. You can literally see the years that have passed by since her first appearance spanning decades all the way until her final appearance here.
Thanks Don Giller for this great collection of interviews/appearances --- this has truly been educationally rewarding/inspiring watch!! 👌👍🏾

I also discovered Fran Lebowitz when she wrote that piece that was published in Newsweek, when I was a teenager. I read everything I could get my hands on that she wrote and became obsessed with her because she confirmed my belief that algebra did not exist in the real world, so why bother? (It turned out we were both wrong about that, but who cares?) So happy when I saw "Just Pretend It's A City," especially the footage of Fran tromping around NYC with a scowl on her face. She is so damn funny.
