I am a funeral director, and I see families overwhelmed by the stuff when the loved ones pass. It is always interesting when stuff goes from proof to a life well lived and something people can remember you by, to a burden. Sending love from Iowa

You've put it so perfectly. And you are the true witness of this pattern, how meaningfulness turns into meaninglessness. Of course, there are exceptions such as family relics, but still... Thank you so much for being here, Claire 💚 Sending love to Iowa.

I am handing the many creative supplies/belongings of a dear, beloved friend/artist buddy who died in 2020 of the consequences of dehydration. He collected everything. He was certainly called a hoarder. He saw value and potential in everything. I still miss him deeply. AND I am suffering with the burden of honoring the potential he saw in his belongings.
I found a locally owned bookstore that couldn’t afford to buy stock during 2020. My friend’s many barely-touched books fit the interests of the store’s customers so they had second-hand books to sell during those hard times. His other things were harder to distribute. One small house & 2 storage bins are empty and there are maybe 8 bins left... in my smallish house. In the living room. And I am overwhelmed.

10 years ago I had to leave all my earthly possessions behind, except for a few clothes and religious books that belonged to my deceased father and grandmother. I had to leave many items that my father and grandmother had given me as a child, along with all photos of my only son. Many years after I left I found a photo of my son in one of my grandmother's books. I had used it there as a place marker many years prior. That photo is precious to me. What I discovered after leaving everything behind is that I still had all the items with me now as memories. I have never second-guessed leaving everything, and I make ever effort now to not burden myself down with physical items. My only regret is that I did not leave soon enough to save my son. As you said, Ana, every physical thing passes away, as do we. I love your videos, they are a bright spot in my day. To me you are that bright ball of loving light.

Dear Ana, you are already a globe of light in this world, and light doesn’t have a gender. 😊
Currently, I’m travelling in my car camper. It carries what I truly need and nothing more. I use every item. This is the amount of stuff I can manage without it being a burden. To me, minimalism is a wonderful way to live, it’s so carefree.

I consider myself both minimalist and maximalist at the same time. I know it may seem weird, but somehow, I like collecting things that make me happy, make me more creative, etc. But as you said, Ana, the light that we carry within is the most important thing & I never forget that. So maybe I'm a minimalist, after all? Who knows... Thank you for a brilliant video once again, Ana ❣

I have been a minimalist for 10-12 years now. Funnily enough people often don't see my home as minimalist, because it is not stark and grey, or with all things behind white cabinet doors.
    - They don't see, that what is left in my home, is things I both like and use. And that I often cull more, and release myself from things.
    - They don't see the joy my app. 40 houseplants bring me any day. They aren't just unappreciated clutter.
    - They don't see that my open cabinets instead of closed doors for all my creative materials, mean I appreciate and use them more.
My minimalism is that I got rid of about half of what I own, am much lighter of mind, and that I know that I could leave 99% of my things behind tomorrow and be all ok with it.

It's been so hard to let go of things after events outside of my control. Sometimes I'm glad I hung on to 2-3 of my grandfather's figurines because maybe one will get lost or something. But really what I miss is my grandfather. So when getting rid of things that have sentimental value, I will take pictures of them. It's also what I look at most when I look at albums of my life and my family - those little things that made Nana's kitchen *hers*, the sweater Dad always wore, the reading glasses that read every morning paper. They represent a time and a feeling - and pictures help evoke those for me. There's still nothing like holding something that still has the scent of your dearly departed. I don't know why it's so comforting to me.

To be creative is my most important activity. I'm without purpose without the option to have a creative outlet. Unfortunatly, my creative endevors come with many tools and materials. I work with paper, mostly, but wood is becomming my future, my legacy. I must have a fairly large building to house my creative world. Sometimes it is overwhelming to be responsible of so much material.

I remember when I realized how I needed to be more mindful in my spending.
I was not working, but caring for our small children. My husband worked very hard to provide for us.
The challenge from a wise mother “when I think I need something or want something, I factor how hard my husband has worked to have that money. And then I realize I do not need so many things.” Wow her wise words changed my whole perspective on things! They are just things and I would rather my husband have more time with me and the kids, rather than “things” That was 20 years ago and I have no regrets about living more focused and minimal! When my mum died, Ihad the task if going through everything she had kept for over 80 years. She kept everything, all our school repirts, paintings , school uniforms, cards, everything. I realised when I opened box by box, the years had eaten away at everything, and when I lifted all these things out the boxes they crumbled with age and melted into nothingness, a puff of dust. I realised then than nothing is permanent, everything eventually dies. That nade me realised that its piintless keeping so many things but to rather keep the memories, until they fade a

I find it hard to let things go but more so if they belong to my son. He has no t in keeping anything, I'm the hurdle. I ave always put too much sentimental store in things. Now I notice I'm keeping things that were not originally mine after e.g. my aunt passed and my mother is passing me things so. I totally agree that it becomes overwhelming as no home can breathe with so much stuff. I'm trying in spurts to get better. I was so bad I had to take a photo of every piece of clothing of my sons before I donated it ... and then all my photos died with a laptop. I'm trying to move on from the loss of my photos by focusing on my son in the now ... but it still breaks my heart. I really need to move towards less and detach the sentimentality from things 🌼💗🌼

When my younger sister died five years ago, I had to go through every one of her items and either give it away, donate it, or discard it. She was an organized hoarder, and it was a daunting task. I thought about all of the time and money that she had spent accumulating her things and it just made me sad. That time and money would have been beter spent, enjoying her life while she was still here. We all must die, but we seem to accumulate and live our lives like we never will. Then someone else is left to deal with our earthly possessions. What minimalism means to me is that my son will never have to suffer what I did while going through my things when I die. It should take him one morning and then he can move in to my house. This video was wonderful Ana. You are pure light and love and it really shines through.I am happy for your new adventures with your husband and hope that you both have a lifetime of health, joy and happiness.

Minimalism has been with mankind in one form or another pretty much since the dawn of time. I've read people like Joe Dominguez (Your Money or Your Life) and others because I just think the whole concept of 8-5 until you die is pretty messed up. In the book of Matthew chapter 6 it reminds us we can't live our lives going in two directions at the same time; to keep our eye simple. That was thousands of years ago. I guess it's the human condition and people have not changed much over the centuries. I love channels like yours. It reminds me of what is right with humankind while we are asea as a species in turmoil. Keep your light shining Ana. 💗💖

I am by definition a minimalist, but I don’t usually think of myself as one. Just like claustrophobic people don’t like being in tiny spaces, I don’t feel comfortable in my own skin when my belongings grow beyond my appreciation, affection, use, and grasp. When things have out lived their appreciation or usage, but still in my possession, I feel a bit cluttered and disconnected from who I am. I’ve realized as I live and continue growing, possessions naturally come and go. I love giving away and clearing my life of the excess when I don’t use or cherish it anymore, like shedding old skin. When I am living my life with just the belongings I cherish and use, I feel more at peace, whole, and balanced.

From the outside, minimalism used to look like nothing more than an aesthetic with a set of rules. But once I took the time to learn about the core concepts and immerse myself in the community of people who practice minimalism, I found a beautiful spectrum made up of personal interpretations by the individuals I listened to or read from. And from that spectrum, I “decluttered” the interpretations that didn’t resonate with me, and I continue to stay connected to the people whose interpretations do resonate with me and uplift me (people like you!❤️). As with most things, when we take time to understand something that is new or misunderstood, it can be truly rewarding and life-changing. 😊

I have been on a slow journey towards minimalism for a few years. It never takes away from my life. It only gives clarity and more energy towards the thing I value the most which is my Creator and getting closer to God. I love how your gentle spirit makes these videos. You are relaxing to us. Thank you dear one.
I tend to lean into always preparing for improved focus with less items. I have some health issues and might not always have the strength to prepare and finish house projects or downsize to a easy manageable level so I’m working (enjoyable) now while I have the time and energy so that my stuff is never a burden to anyone. Small and organized amount that is easy to deal if I go to Heaven soon. I see it as a way to be giving to others and most importantly my husband who works so hard and takes care of me well. I’ve made decluttering and improving household chores a hobby : ) If it’s not easy to maintain I try to let it go in exchange for more energy and thoughts toward higher and better ways: )

Dearest Ana - as ALWAYS these coffee chats fills my heart with peace and joy. I feel that the whole minimalism trend - yes trend - gets really crazy at times. Some people just live a less "stuffed" life - I have always preferred spending time out doors, time with my cats and time with BOOKS rather than time spent accumulating things. My parents on the other hand seem to feel the need to always collect and hold onto so much stuff - I guess it's something in the make up of each human. I see it at work as well - so much spending on "things" and so little TIME to live and breathe.
Anyway that's my little opinion for now. You look radiant and as always - the "chat" brings joy. Wishing you and Brian and wonderful blessed and sunny week ahead - enjoy some sunshine for me too please it's absolutely FREEZING here with endless storms and rain. Sending lots of Love and Purrrrrrrrrrrs ALWAYS xxx

I'm an upclycing artist and collect 'waste' to turn into art, fashion and buildings. I love the esthetic of maximalism. But I'm an minimalist as well. I have small, handy tools, smart and compact. I have only 3 outfits. But I love living surrounded by art, Fairy style things, kitschy vintage, oversized furniture and lots of loud colors. It's possible to be both

I became a minimalist in 2017 by choice. I was a collector, and I had some really cool stuff. But I had to move and my mantra became if it won't fit in the Ford it's not going. I had so much fun giving and donating, even sold a few books. A lifetime of memories. I've never looked back. It is so freeing. I've even trimmed my art supplies down to a few. They used to occupy a whole room. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and experiences, it is very helpful and motivating. So glad things are working for you Ana, I hope I spelled your name correctly!!! Be blessed!

Dear Ana, a more minimalist environment is a goal I am working towards. I'm trying to reduce the amount of possessions I have, largely for my children's sake. When my father died my sister and I had to clear out a huge amount of stuff and it made a stressful time more stressful.
I have got rid of a lot of stuff and I still have a lot more, so minimalism is a work in progress for me. However, I definitely think that minimalism is still a valid ethos to live by and that we all gain greater self-knowledge by re-examination of past choices.
    Go safely x

Dearest Anastasia, your thought-provoking video came just at a time when my children and I were discussing where all my possessions will go when I am no longer here. They told me they don’t want any of my “stuff,” that they have enough of their own. This saddened me a lot because what I have is a collection of my mother’s personal Hungarian items that she brought with her when she escaped during the 1956 uprising. These things meant so much to her as they do to me also, yet my children don’t care at all. I am a minimalist, live very simply, but have held onto my mother’s things and it hurts me that they don’t mean anything at all to my children. Am I wrong feeling this way?
I am seeing happiness in your eyes dearest Anastasia. Make each day count as husband and wife. Much love to you and Brian. 💕

    • @anagoldberg
      @anagoldberg  2 года назад +1

Dear friend, there's absolutely nothing wrong with you feeling that way. We all have our own most cherished memories and possessions and it hurts when our loved ones do not share our feelings. But. Just try to think that you are the vessel of memories that somehow get transferred to your belongings. And your children will keep what brings up their most cherished memories of you - you will be with them, you and the particles of your own memories. I can understand your sadness though...
Thank you for your kindness as always. Brian and I sending our love 💚

People will always make a trend out of whatever challenges the status quo. It starts off as a rebellion of those tired of the status quo, but then those that can see a way of making money from the rebellious ideas create a trend thereby distorting the original idea. Minimalism is not dead, and will never be. As I got older and became more sensitive as an individual, I naturally became a minimalist. Becoming minimalist is the natural shedding of mental and spiritual baggage.

When I was younger, I wanted stuff, it felt like it validated my existence and boosted my social standing (as you mentioned, something to that effect). But as I grew older (I'm turning 43), I've gravitated towards minimalism more and more, although I did not know that it's thing! I've only in the last 3 years learned that the concept exists and that it's real. I'm not a minimalist by any means, but I've realised over the years that it calms and focuses me a lot in times of stress. My husband is the complete opposite, but I'll keep striving towards it, lol. Hello Ana, you are right, things are just things. Has there to be made a distinction between things, possessions and commodities? I think so. Even more difficult is it, where we put experience, knowledge and wisdom, talent and capacities ... Is it in any case better to travel light? I am not sure. And art, where do we have to imagine art? Beauty and emotions? My preference for minimalism is mainly an aesthetic approach. Have a good time!
