13:00 At the explanation of Roles, its important to note that a creature can have more than 1 role. The limitation is that a creature can only have 1 role per controller. In a two-player game, that's 2 roles max. Commander sees 4 roles max.

Ah..... I really missed this show. Red aggressive cards getting a D, random blue minimal value cards getting C+, just classic Marshall and Luis. Love you guys.
Not sure if you realize this later or someone else said this but young hero triggers even if your creature has 3 toughness, making it way better, so if it’s a 3/3 it’ll still get one counter off it
Remember that Enchanting Tales will be present in this limited, meaning enchantment removal may be main-deckable! Don’t want your opponent keeping that pesky bitter blossom
i dont really think so, atleast 80 % of that bonus sheet is either unplayable Fs or low impact playables only like 3 are amazing Bitterblossom, defens of the heart and goblin bombardement. Main decking enchanment removal for that seems quite bad.
Can't wait to put the Young Hero role on that Merfolk Coralsmith. Keep paying to pump it below 3 health and keep getting the counters from the role. Will it work? Maybe, but I'm willing to try.
"You block with your parents." A phrase I didn't know I needed until I heard it. Great video, always looking forward to these when a new set comes out.
Nobody’s mentioning that you can’t Bargain away creatures when you steal your opponent’s creature until end of turn. Really important part of the format to contextualize those cards imo.
ill echo the "yall forgot the bonus sheet" remarks, and also add that some of the cards that will do well in gruul's power theme were undervalued imo as a result of similar forgetfulness
Just like the power theme, it was odd how Marshal kept forgetting the 5 mv theme in UG, saying some of the big expensive Blue cards had "no synergy", even going out of his way to list the mechanics of the set like Celebration.
1:46:53 you can bargain it away. Same with curse and young hero and other roles. The set is full of your own enchantments you want to sac or kill. Idk if the one mana kill your own enchantment draw a card is gonna be playable, but if it is then that one also makes this work
3:23:50 yes black destroys enchantments now, they thought is was odd that everything else only had one thing it couldn’t destroy while black had two. They made the change a few years ago and we’ve seen weak enchantment removal in black as it’s third in that area
Went 5-0 at my local prerelease thanks to you guys. Thanks for all the awesomeness and free advice you've put out over the years. Has made me a significantly better limited and constructed player. Won with RW celebration which is not that difficult to trigger it turns out.
46:00 there are X cost spells that can be used at 5+ and ofc Adventures that are cheap to play early and lategame trigger the enchantment as well. It's much better supported in this set than in an average set.
i am impressed with them being able to possibly find a way to make auras actually good. by making them these tokens that are bonus add-ons to otehr cards, they've really sidestepped the biggest problem with auras. PRINCESS TAKES FLIGHT - yes marshall, i think you're supposed to bargain this thing away before ch.3, then it seems like a great card.
You guys put so much pressure on the green common 5 drops for the UG 5+ cost deck, I'm really surprised you guys didn't mention how Into the Fae Court was also a common 5 drop for that deck
1:33:15 - The scenario you failed to mention is when YOU make the alpha strike and then save all of your creatures when they try to make trades. Admittedly this is probably best out of sideboard in cases where your creatures match-up well in size against theirs, e.g., you both have a bunch of 2/2s.
I was thinking that, but there's a couple problems with that scenario. 1) It's telegraphed to the moon. There is this card and the trumpet blast that would signal a weird alpha strike so they'll play around it. 2) The spell will only save your guys; it won't guarantee kills. If your opponent makes profitable blocks you've turned this card into a possible burn spell that only hits the dome based on the power of your unblocked creatures while leaving you open to the crackback. That's not usually a card you would run. But yes, that's a way you could play it.
My guys, we have an entire 63 card enchantment sheet, many of which at the bomb level. We have one of the best pacifism versions of all time. Auras are a core mechanic of the set. And all the enchantment removal is getting crapped on left, right, and center. We're looking at a Mirrodin-style situation where your naturalizes are probably maindeck-able if not at a premium.
most of the enchantment sheet seems more for other formats though, with maybe a few are actually great in limited. Bitterblossom, for example, is great. Smothering Tithe not so much; but its a staple in EDH.
@@trehenry413 Almost all of the uncommons are playable, with more than half of them being quite good. About a quarter of the rares and mythics are bombs, the rest is mostly unplayable. Not to mention when they're talking about the +1/+1 for each enchantment as if roles are the only ones. And besides the bonus sheet there's plenty in the main set
I made a reply in another comment's thread that went into great detail. There's about 50 enchantments in the set worth removing. Some more than others and some are your own bad roles or bad Chapter 3s and some are game winning bombs.
FYI, Tottentanz is German it means death dance. Edit: I posted this before I got to the part where Marshall looked it up. I will leave my comment here though.
"Totentanz" is german and means: "Dance of the dead". "Killdance" (As marshall said) would be "Tötentanz" ("ö" is different to "o") and is kinda strange. I guess you could say so and a native speaker would understand you, but your teacher would mark this as wrong.
Wasn't really really interested in LotR limited, so I've got nearly 13 drafts worth of tokens/coins/gems saved up. Pumped about how this set looks; hopefully it plays as fun as it seems.
Absolutely insane card. The lose 2 life is pushing it over the top; that's a Shock to the face. At common also? Probably gonna be one of the top 3-5 commons in this set
Flavor on cursed courtier is so good, also in addition to bargaining it the role can fall off if you can give it another role, then it becomes a 4/4 lifelink with another ability. Also triggers celebrate by itself.
the risk of it being a 1/1 lifelink for 3 mana is a bit too high for my liking though ... don't think it's gonna be very strong unless you're going really heavy into bargain/roles
When they talk about the consistency of Celebration, I feel like they're failing to consider that creating tokens counts as nonland permanents ETBing. Once you realize how many cards come with a Role, Rat, or Food token, and you realize those cards trigger Celebration by themselves, it begins to look a lot more achievable to have Celebration on a regular basis.
they got there in the end man you just had to watch until around hour 3 and 40 mins when they got to the red commons. They mention celebration will be pretty easy to turn on.
18:00 Johann can also cast Adventures Edit: in general, this set has lot of spell effect that are attached to creature (adventures, creatures that make aura tokens).
Thanx for this! really nice to see you go over all the cards and get a little better feeling for the set. With the evaluation of all the white cards you guys do seem to forget about the Celebration mechanic.... every card that puts two permanents into play (hopeful vigil, cursed courtier, return triumphant) has a huge upside in this strategy, it might effect the rating of those cards if that is taken into account.... especially hopeful vigil will be nuts in that deck. For The princess takes flight I could also see it be used to set up celebration by exiling a creature you own. seems like a cute way to get rid of cursed tokens on your own creatures (cursed courtier?).
1:39:30 It looks like they didn't read the young hero role right. LSV says for the second time something like you'll get max 2 counters out of it, but since the text says 3 or less it should be up to 3 counters.
1:44:00 On Stockpiling Celebrant-I played a pre-release tonight with a deck that had Cursed Courtier and Spiteful Hexmage. Very specific (and I didn’t draw the Celebrant) but it definitely felt good in the deck alongside those two and Hopeful Vigil
Stockpiling celebrant is also pretty nice for reusing adventures and for getting rid of enchantment based removal. Not that y'all don't think about these things.
Hearing LSV saying celebration is probably hard to trigger then immediATEly sitting through the white 2&3 drops like "oh that triggers celebrate by itself", "oh that does too!" sent me into a fugue state. Set looks fun AND funny. Super stoked to greed out a bunch of dumb ramp decks and lose with four five+ drops in my hand for the next few months xD
Just a quick note on Black's enchantment destruction. When it comes to destruction effects, Black gets cheap single creature destruction, expensive targeted enchantment destruction, no artifact or land destruction, and cheap sacrifice that can designate permanent types but leaves choice to the opponent. If you look at the enchantment removal, they all cost 4+ and are sorcery speed compared to Green's 1-2 mana instant speed enchantment removal. So not a color pie break, it's been available for a while, it's just slow, clunky and expensive.
1:32:45 Am I just wrong for thinking Eerie Interference is much stronger card then they are giving it credit to? I am thinking about it and: 1) If I am behind I need to draw it - it gives me an extra turn at least and often might allow value blocks that were not available. 2) If I am at parity I want to draw it - I just swing with everything they either block and lose creatures or take it and I fog their attack 3) If I winning I still am okay drawing this since it can help me protect my creatures when pushing last points of damage or it closes a window for their suprise win. With these 3 isn’t it just a C+ card? Maybe even a bit more since I can imagine myself in so many situations where I just cannot beat this. Yes an insane removal or creature is probably better, but I would value first copy of this a lot and probably at least consider running more than one.
I think they're about right on the card. Alpha strikes just don't happen that often, and it's only better than a traditional fog (which are consistently bad) if your creatures would trade. The issue is that when you're behind, sure it buys you a turn. However your opponent still gets to draw a card and use their mana on that turn, so you end up even further behind, as you spent your turn drawing and casting Eerie interference rather than actually dealing with the reason you're behind. Alternatively, casting a 3-mana 2/3 vanilla will actually help stabilise the board.
@@simonteesdale9752I can see that. I still have the feeling of the rating being “It is a fog -> it is bad”, but it looks like one of the best fogs since something like Moonmist. Yes it is situational, but the floor is okay and the ceiling is you win the game. Which is a marking of a premium trick IMO. This is not fighting against the 3 mana 2/3s but against the 6-8 tricks and removal spells you need. I will try to play one in my midrange decks, but can easily see being wrong in the end.
Return Triumphant is slightly better when you consider it triggers celebration by itself. You get two permanents that turn. Also, the creature would actually get pumped to 4 power.
Im not really a mtg expert but i can feel that bargain will be extremely powerful. I just see so many great fodder to sacrifice that it will be nuts. That 1 mana black discard enchantment is nuts.
Stockpiling celebrant can bounce your cursed role tokens (I think a couple of creatures etb cursed) or save your stuff from the myriad of enchantment based removal. And it can recycle sagas- combos with Princess takes Flight very well since you can make the exile permanent. But it does seem to be pretty narrow.
I'm very amused by Hamlet Glutton, if you Bargain away a food it basically pays you the mana back it would've cost to "manually" eat the food. Very good design.
Do the 4 power green creatures get a bump because of the "Ferocious" cards floating around in the set? When you mentioned a couple of the creatures which had 4 power this didn't come up, but I might have missed it
You mentioned a couple of times that Young Hero role only takes it up to three toughness. But the wording is 3 or less so it takes it up to 4 toughness. Doesn't it? Great work, always enjoy the set review shows :-)
twisted fealty (and eriettes tempting apple) do not seem to work with bargain as well as you guys seem to make it out to be. u cant sacrifice creatures for bargain (unles they happen to be a aretifact/enchantment or token creature, but that makes the amount of targets pretty narrow) and i dont remember seeing much other sacrifice outlets in the reviewed cards
About defensive combat tricks, it might be worth mentioning that Celebration decks will often play their stuff before combat, so offensive combat tricks might be a bit harder to play.
One potential miss, "Ash, Party Crasher" will trigger off of any single card with the Role keyword. In which case you could reliably give this a counter on nearly every turn. Looks like a mean beater when you can play it on turn 2, B+
i think drafting a deck with like 4 hopless nightmares would be awsome. its a black shock that makes them bin a card. then u get to scry later value town...
Nah. [[Cancel]] (with upside) is pretty stong in this format. Remember: When you counter an Adventure, the card goes to the graveyard and you cannot cast the normal side.
Knight of Doves is a bomb. People are going to be splashing this card in every deck by the end of the format. It is so easy to get roles in any color and put them on the same creature. This card is the lingering souls/triplicate spirits of the set. I'm 5-0 with my first draft, I missed picks, it's nothing special and I'm not playing well, but I do have 2 knights.
Totentanz doesn't just sound like it, it's already a German word. I've most often heard the French version of the name: Danse Macabre. It was a widely performed allegorical Middle Ages play in which dancers representing Death and people from all walks of life joined together and danced in a parade to the grave. The name is very literal: "tantz" = dance and "der Toten" = the dead. "Rich man poor man, come away Come to dance the Macabray." -from Neil Gaiman's The Graveyard Book

21:30 for the celebration mechanic, you are forgetting that creatures that ETB make a role create the two permanents required.
I think Celebration also counts the card itself right? So as long as you play any other permanent with the card it triggers too?
Also almost every saga creates a permanent when it enters!

Thank you both for the consistently awesome content 😁👍👍
Return Triumphant is slightly better when you consider it triggers celebration by itself. You get two permanents that turn. Also, the creature would actually get pumped to 4 power.
If theres ever a set to maindeck enchantment removal. This is the one
Love your content, but your editor needs to get on the ball with putting the correct card image up.
ive been hopeing your last 2 episodes would be this thank you so much im gonna reveiw this a few times be4 prerelease.
Im not really a mtg expert but i can feel that bargain will be extremely powerful. I just see so many great fodder to sacrifice that it will be nuts. That 1 mana black discard enchantment is nuts.
Went 7-1 playing 3 copies in my second draft, combine it with a white creature that bounces it or just general bargains
Totentanz is german for dance of the dead. Funny how a german word made it on the english cards.
Tough Cookie - “Yeah, that’s a card” Marshall - “It’s Sweet” Luis - 😂
3 constants in life: Death and Taxes in Legacy, LRR Pre-prerelease, and Limited Resources set reviews
41:53 "pretty sweet" for a cookie, don't think we missed it Luis 🍪
Best wishes to Marshall's cat ❤
thats such indepth, thank you so much
Tough Cookie: LSV: ”that’s pretty sweet…”
I'm very amused by Hamlet Glutton, if you Bargain away a food it basically pays you the mana back it would've cost to "manually" eat the food. Very good design.
Yeah the 3 life is from the food it's eating because it's a glutton
Do the 4 power green creatures get a bump because of the "Ferocious" cards floating around in the set? When you mentioned a couple of the creatures which had 4 power this didn't come up, but I might have missed it
You mentioned a couple of times that Young Hero role only takes it up to three toughness. But the wording is 3 or less so it takes it up to 4 toughness. Doesn't it? Great work, always enjoy the set review shows :-)
You're right, it says "3 or less" so your creature goes as big as X/4. I also missed it the day it was spoiled.
"Minecraft daredevil" lmao
twisted fealty (and eriettes tempting apple) do not seem to work with bargain as well as you guys seem to make it out to be. u cant sacrifice creatures for bargain (unles they happen to be a aretifact/enchantment or token creature, but that makes the amount of targets pretty narrow) and i dont remember seeing much other sacrifice outlets in the reviewed cards
1:09:00 - When you bargain away a Food token with Hamlet Glutton, then it's like you are getting 4 extra mana.
Very flavorful connection, I didn't see it
They seem to missed at 21 mins in that Roles also trigger Celebration (aura token permanents).
Hope your cat is ok, Marshall.
About defensive combat tricks, it might be worth mentioning that Celebration decks will often play their stuff before combat, so offensive combat tricks might be a bit harder to play.
The Princess Takes Flight / Stockpiling Celebrant combo looks fun.
Great show as always. Not gonna draft this in paper though, sadly the sealed prices in Norway are getting way too expensive.
Take a flight to Poland 😅
One potential miss, "Ash, Party Crasher" will trigger off of any single card with the Role keyword. In which case you could reliably give this a counter on nearly every turn. Looks like a mean beater when you can play it on turn 2, B+
Even as a turn 4 / 5 play I could see this coming down as a 4/4 with haste
Marshall cares a lot about green 5 and 6 drops, but blue ones (that work with the same 5+ mana strategy) "naaah".
i think drafting a deck with like 4 hopless nightmares would be awsome. its a black shock that makes them bin a card. then u get to scry later value town...
"Rich man poor man, come away
Come to dance the Macabray."
-from Neil Gaiman's The Graveyard Book
Thank you for the video !
I think you didn’t mention the gruul archetype enough though compared to celebration
