The webinar will present findings from recent research (funded by a SSHRC Partnership Development Grant and led by Dr. Carmen Gill at UNB) conducted with police officers across Canada to understand their perceptions of intimate partner violence and coercive control. Topics to be discussed include definitions and understandings of coercive control, legal responses, perceptions of risk and risk assessment tools, and future training and education.
Presented by Dr. Mary Aspinall is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice at St. Thomas University located in Fredericton, New Brunswick. Her research concentrates on intimate partner violence (IPV), specialized domestic violence courts, intervention programs for IPV, and coercive control. Mary’s former frontline employment includes working as a caseworker in a dedicated IPV victim services unit, as well as a staff member at a women’s shelter for those fleeing IPV. Mary has, and continues to serve, on provincial Domestic Violence Death Review Committees. Mary has also been a member of national research teams, such as the Canadian Domestic Homicide Prevention Initiative, and currently contributes to Canadian research focusing on police responses to IPV and coercive control.
