You could try adding 2 more sensors to the main body of your vehicle. 1 on the left and 1 on the right. Have these control a gyro override to turn the vehicle once the player is in range. If you add 2 more additional sensors for up and down you could make a flying follow drone. Glad you are feeling better.
I think what you're looking for at the very end is more of a drift if you want to get it working properly I think you should forget the thrusters all together and just focus purely have them turn towards you and drive when you're out of range and doing that I think you'll get a better stopping speed to
Was Just playing with idea. 4 wheels in back with gyro, remote block, custom turret controller, 4 thrusters for reverse thrust and a long gooseneck with rotor facing down. on the rotor camera, 2 sensors 2 wheels and 2 towers that prevent the front assembly from turning all the way around. Setup thrust override 2 front wheels and 2 back wheel turned off sensors set 20(?) meters out one turns off thrusters the other turns on wheels and vice versa when rover is in range. The Thrusters act as inertial dampeners/brakes, the wheels propel the rover forward the rotor and custom turret act for steering. Dumb for navigation but will follow you well on ice.

That is so cool... Odd idea though 2 wheels attached to camera top so they point at you so that it is a segmented steering vehicle like a semi truck.
