Just realized now that Tuomas used Shakespeare quotes and builds the whole verse by using the structure of the shakespearian Sonnett (3/3/4/4). Beautiful little detail. Realizing first there is something "weird" with the verse structure and it all making sense when Shakespeare is quoted. Brilliant.
Neato! Tuomas does tend to do cool stuff like that. He injects art into the very structure of his songs. Another time he did that was in The Poet and the Pendulum. From the spoken word portion that mentions only having "3 minutes and counting," it is exactly 3 minutes until The Poet character in the song dies and his heart stops beating - right before the "Mother & Father" movement of the piece begins.

The "Eternal Earthrise" lyric is interesting and shows that Tuomas knows his stuff. Since we always see the same face of the Moon, that also means that, from the Moon, the Earth will always be the same place in the sky. So you would never see the Earth rise or set. But, the further north or south you travel, the Earth would appear lower and lower in the sky. Shoemaker's urn is near the Lunar south pole. So, depending on where it is exactly, the Earth could be visible just over the horizon giving the appearance of an "eternal Earthrise".
The thing is, the moon does have the same side towards Earth the whole time, but it's not perfectly still in that, it wobbles a little. This means that from about 20% of the moon's surface, you *can* see Earthrises (and Earth settings). In the 'best' places on the moon, it's possible to see entire earthrises. It's a slow process, I think it takes about 48 hours.
Just FYI, while "Ad astra" is Latin, "Laudato sii" (or the shortened form "laudato si' ") isn't: it's Vulgar, aka medieval Italian (has a lot of similarities with Latin tho...) and it's part of St. Francis' most important prayer, the Canticle of the Sun. Your translation was really on point, kudos! Greetings from Italy. 👋🇮🇹🖖
The quote from Romeo & Juliette is on the urn containing Shoemaker's ashes on the moon. Try the first track, 'Music', next ... well, any track really, they're all good ;-)
"Laudato Si" is originally attributed to the 12th Century monk St Francis of Assisi from his "Canticle of the Sun" which is an homage to Nature. It's also from the second encyclical of Pope Francis, an entreaty to care for our planet. Those who have gone into space and having looked back on the Earth, realize how trivial our cares for power and wealth really are. I look at "Shoemaker" as encapsulating all of these themes together. "Ad Astra" is "to the stars". (Royal Air Force motto "per ardua ad astra" "through adversity to the stars").

Tuomas has created a dramatic end to this song: from the crater where Shoemaker’s urn hit the moon, you see the earthset and then the sunset, accompanied by Floor’s voice👸💪

@@phillee2814 yes, interesting, but with dramatic I was referring to the fact that the staging of the video does not correspond to reality as the Shoemaker crater is estimated to be 2.5 km deep🤓
The Earth slowly describes a figure 8 pattern in the lunar sky, over a 27-day period, and at some latitudes you'd get to see it rise and set over and over, hence "eternal earthrise." (The Wikipedia entry on "earthrise" has the gory details.)

His urn was onboard the NASA lunar prospector, which spent 19 months studying the moon after which it got purposefully crashed at more than 2000 miles/h in a crater on the south pole, that crater was aptly named Shoemaker crater. From the force of the impact the probe was certainly vaporized, apart from the small Titanium urn which was either ejected and is now lying somewhere on the moon, or it is deep in the crater, and will stay there longer than any terrestrial tomb.
Doug, given what you've heard here, I would highly recommend you react to the "Nature" side of Human :||: Nature, as it is right up your alley: 8 tracks, all written by Tuomas, that are purely instrumental in nature (no pun intended, lol). Each one is different, but none actually end before the next one begins. My favorite is the last one, which has as a bonus treat a reading by I believe Geraldine Butler, a British actress, reading a passage from "Pale Blue Dot" by Dr. Carl Sagan. I really think you'll love listening to it, and as a composer, enjoy learning how Tuomas writes the music he does, from a classical perspective.
Thanks for the great reaction! Don't see any commenter mention this, but the lines from Shakespeare is also written on the urn which hold Shoemaker's ash ont the moon Regards from Sweden Ulf

Woops! I've missed a posting from "Daily Doug" .... How can that be!? 😋 And you finally got to "Human Nature" by Nightwish. Way to go 😘 The spoken part; the Shakespear verse; is performed by Toumas' wife..., and so "fitting" as well, since they both , truly adore each other . That verse and the last "classical crescendo", in this piece; always gives me goosebumps. The first time I listened to "Shoemaker", I started crying. This album is so musically BEAUTIFUL!! 🥰 Troy was singing with Floor, by the way...; that part when they "slow down". I'm so happy, you've not forgotten Nightwish. 🤗
This seems to be the first NW album where Tuomas did what he wanted to do without having to care about the limitations of the main singer. "These are the words that I wrote to this melody, you figure it out." And it isn't something that can be put in a certain catogary.
My left side from shoulder to hip is stars tattoos & I've popped an ad astra in there for good measure. I actually remember when Shoemaker passed as I know the Tanami track. It was shocking & hurt my amateur astronomer soul. I wouldn't mind being shot to space when I die

"Background stuff, other worldly" The "dreamlike" hammered Dulcimer I think Doug, that is heard through the first section. Some previous discussions if it's digital or real and that is lightyears beyond my ears, I would think Tuomas would have used a real one if it were possible, but I have no idea. Eternal earthrise is what Shoemaker would "see" from his position on the south pole of the moon.
When are you doing Avantasia's Scarecrow or The Raven Child by them? Tobia's Sammet, the creator of what's known today as "metal opera" is just a genius. You'd love their music. Always inviting incredible musicians to sing with them.
Thanks for Shoemaker the whole album is different and has a clear message about the state of our world today it is written in very Poetic terms and quite cryptic at times when looking for the meaning of the Lyrics Really the Album needs to start at Music and end with endlessness they ( the songs) all make reference to each other in some way I am making my way through the album lyrics with Guylain Prince OFM he study’s lyrical content and breaks them down he speaks French so have to read the subtitles so it is taking me a while to get through it is a 2 part process as he listens to the song first then he analyses the lyrics I have loved the exposure to music I have never listened to through your channel which I am sure I should have known about those great iconic bands of the 70’s and 80’s that others know so well as I get older the more I enjoy music that has been my main entertainment during our last couple of years being in lockdown in Victoria Australia
Did you hear that the guitarist is picking the drum rolls? This is a difficult song to play!!! Nightwish is amazing! Floor is a goddess of vocal perfection!
I used to give this band (mostly by extension of how I see the whole symphonic/power metal genre) shit for having only fantasy "dungeons and dragons" lyrics, but then I came to realize they love to write about science, religion, contemporary humanistic issues... really gained a lot of respect for them over the last few years. I saw your face during the male vocal bit... go check out "Harvest"... or put it on your list for next time ;)
What is your problem with fantasy lyrics? They make fantastic songs. See virtually every song by Dio. Or check out Clamavi de Profundis and their adaptations of Tolkien's poems. If fantasy isn't your cup of tea that's fair, but it's NOT a valid source of critique of a work of art if it uses fantasy.
Nightwish is always magic. I say this often (?) but you should give a try to Rhapsody of Fire, the songs "Symphony of Enchanted Lands" or "Dark tower of Abyss". They have an amazing orchestral sound; you'll surely will like them (except for the double drum parts).

I was really waiting for this one! I'm excited! 😁
How's the Heart acoustic version (Planet Rock) has become one of my favorites from this album. Some react to both the lyric video and the acoustic version. Floor and Troy together on the acoustic version is a great combo.
Doug, I think you'd also enjoy Tribal from this same album. It gives the drums much love and we hear Floor growl again.
Thanks Doug. Another great analysis. Would love to hear some more Ayreon. Valley of the Queens, Everybody dies, eye of ra would be a great start
Eugene Shoemaker , the most heavy metal scientist.
I think most heavy metal scientist is still Dawkins. He was on stage with Nightwish at Wembley...
@@ilkkak3065 You mean '' The greatest show on earth '' in Wembley Arena , you' re wright . Dope song ... and great concert . He is endeed the most heavy metal scientist . Now we got two of them !.
Great reaction Doug! I really appreciate your insightful commentary.
Doug,
I totally love your analyst of the compositions, especially Nightwish. It really helps me personally understand what is going on and greatly assist my own creative style. Thank you for sharing!
I think you'd enjoyed it. Shoemaker is my favorite somg on this album. Your reactions told all... 🙂
Thank you Doug excellent reaction as allways...
this is my favorite song on this album, thank you
Love this song !!!!! and love this group !!!
Amazing, wonderful piece.
Just discovered your awesome channel and was up way too late last night watching a bunch of videos. I humbly suggest some great songs that you may enjoy:
Andromeda - Chameleon Carnival
Gamma Ray - Man on a Mission
Stardust - Stranger
Therion - The Crowning of Atlantis
Wuthering Heights - The Mad Sailor
Savatage - Chance
Thanks again and I look forward to some more great songs and commentary!
thank you Doug, am learning a lot,
Oh man. Can't wait for you to get to "Music". On the history and importance and substance of music.
Floor said on her new Floor site, that this was the hardest song for her to do...
Floor has such great vocals!
Both disks are superb and kind of show the music genius of Tuomas... Great review once again Doug
All the lyric videos made for this album are great.
Eternal earth rise; the earth never rises on the moon as it’s tidally locked. So shoemaker can always see the earth eternally risen. Beautiful baby.
I haven't even started to watch the video and I already hit like, it is an awesome song and I know you'll enjoy it!
Kind of shocked me a bit that you did not talk about the melody... It is quite special to me!
But as usual, very educating.
Regards!
Thanks for the great reaction!
Don't see any commenter mention this, but the lines from Shakespeare is also written on the urn which hold Shoemaker's ash ont the moon
Regards from Sweden
Ulf
You should hear this live.
OMG Floor melts the universe
Hey Doug I just came across a cool concert and thought of you and it's by a band called within temptation called black symphony and if you love nitghwish you'll love this
Thanks. Please keep NW in the rotation whenever you can. Also, please check out Auri and Auri II, as well as Music Inspired by The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck (all by Toumas). I'd sit and listen to the entire albums with you start to finish.
Woops! I've missed a posting from "Daily Doug" .... How can that be!? 😋
And you finally got to "Human Nature" by Nightwish.
Way to go 😘
The spoken part; the Shakespear verse; is performed by Toumas' wife..., and so "fitting" as well, since they both , truly adore each other .
That verse and the last "classical crescendo", in this piece; always gives me goosebumps.
The first time I listened to "Shoemaker", I started crying.
This album is so musically BEAUTIFUL!! 🥰
Troy was singing with Floor, by the way...; that part when they "slow down".
I'm so happy, you've not forgotten Nightwish. 🤗
This seems to be the first NW album where Tuomas did what he wanted to do without having to care about the limitations of the main singer.
"These are the words that I wrote to this melody, you figure it out."
And it isn't something that can be put in a certain catogary.
My left side from shoulder to hip is stars tattoos & I've popped an ad astra in there for good measure.
I actually remember when Shoemaker passed as I know the Tanami track. It was shocking & hurt my amateur astronomer soul. I wouldn't mind being shot to space when I die
You should check out the few live videos there are of this now - not for a video, they're not very good quality only bootlegs so far, but for yourself: it's really something else to see Floor pull that ending live!
the gret thing is when you listen to the album that song leads perfectly into the song nature
If you liked this video I would suggest the music video for Noise. It’s another one with great imagery and relevant message.
Can't believe i missed this episode. Great to see you back at Nightwish again Dough. Love it!
Cant' wait to listen to this live! :D
Ditto from yesterday...definitely gonna check out this band.
Can you imagine the expense of putting flowers on his gravesite? Great song, great man. As always, a stellar reaction, Doug ... pun intended!
As the proverbially cheap Dutchman I totally enjoyed your comment!
my 3 nature... faves, i am always in tears and big feelings, if i listen to them
: Procession ( absolutly beautiful), Endlessness (unbelievable good) and How is the Heart? 3 epic, very tragic songs with much positive Energy...
If you'd like to see Doug react to Nightwish, High Hopes (End of an Era) then give this comment a like 😃😃😃😃
"Background stuff, other worldly" The "dreamlike" hammered Dulcimer I think Doug, that is heard through the first section. Some previous discussions if it's digital or real and that is lightyears beyond my ears, I would think Tuomas would have used a real one if it were possible, but I have no idea.
Eternal earthrise is what Shoemaker would "see" from his position on the south pole of the moon.
I never liked Nightwish, but Doug's analysis of the song really made me appreciate them.
The Noise is a very good tune. I think it is the second one on the album
Yes absolutely! And it is also one of NWs best music videos as well with the visuals emphasizing the meaning of the song. Very very impressive.
When are you doing Avantasia's Scarecrow or The Raven Child by them? Tobia's Sammet, the creator of what's known today as "metal opera" is just a genius. You'd love their music. Always inviting incredible musicians to sing with them.
Thanks for Shoemaker the whole album is different and has a clear message about the state of our world today it is written in very Poetic terms and quite cryptic at times when looking for the meaning of the Lyrics
Really the Album needs to start at Music and end with endlessness they ( the songs) all make reference to each other in some way
I am making my way through the album lyrics with Guylain Prince OFM he study’s lyrical content and breaks them down he speaks French so have to read the subtitles so it is taking me a while to get through it is a 2 part process as he listens to the song first then he analyses the lyrics
I have loved the exposure to music I have never listened to through your channel which I am sure I should have known about those great iconic bands of the 70’s and 80’s that others know so well as I get older the more I enjoy music that has been my main entertainment during our last couple of years being in lockdown in Victoria Australia
Did you hear that the guitarist is picking the drum rolls? This is a difficult song to play!!! Nightwish is amazing! Floor is a goddess of vocal perfection!
Beautiful song Doug 😁 thank you
If you haven't already seen it, Floor performed o mio babbino caro on television years ago
Please! We’ve been suggesting these songs for a long time. I know he will really like Fabio Lione’s vocals and the orchestration as well
Nightwish-sagan, is a Tribute to Carl Sagan
For a soprano Simone Simons from Epica is also a great choice.
Epica-stabat mater dolorosa-ft Floor Jansen,
Is a live performance of a ancient hymn, during a metal concert!
