    The "Beginning" typo slipped past me. This is really the second part of the previous dungeon design video. That video touched on my philosophy and an overview of the basics. Now beginning with this video we'll look more closely at the details. The next video takes you inside the dungeon. To again quote The Dungeon Builder's Guidebook from 2nd edition AD&D, "Historically, a dungeon consisted of underground chambers for the confinement of prisoners. However, as a convention used liberally throughout the D&D game, "dungeon" means any bounded setting within which player's characters interact with each other, nonplayer characters, traps, puzzles, monsters, and/or other challenging situations. Thus, this term applies to everything from subterranean mines and burial chambers to castles, cities, and extraplanar abodes." Thanks for watching.

    I play AD&D “by the book”. One of the things that comes up fairly often is item saving throws. This mechanic seems to be a tool for causing magic items to be destroyed whenever the person wearing or holding an item gets caught up in a lightning bolt or fireball, for example. I think we have gone through at least 4 suit of magic armor and at least 5 different magic swords in this manner.
    Anyway, this could be one way to “undo” the magic item hordes that players can accumulate in a heavy magic game.

    • @welovettrpgs
      @welovettrpgs  6 месяцев назад

      The durability of magic items in 5e is a bit much. They're nearly indestructable. I'm used to the AD&D mechanics.

    I got into dungeon ecology around the time I stumbled into AD&D and then Traveler, of all things. It sort of started my journey through simulation game play. I spent way too many hours trying to be architecturally and biologically 'accurate' until I discovered 40k and realized that there was NO WAY 10 Space Marines, as modeled, are going to fit inside a RHINO. Actually it was around the time games like TWERPS, MEKTON and BEYOND THE SUPERNATURAL landed on my table. There was little concern about the minutia but still, there had to be some verisimilitude to ground the events and encourage immersion. I still enjoy mapping out complexes and holds and setting up some kind of ecological or political structure for an area.

      If you catch my prior Dungeon creation video I do discuss verisimilitude.

    Nice rundown and interesting tips, I usually use humans or some of the other base humanoid player races as the bad guys in about half of my dungeons-though I didn't always. Originally I was just throwing monster combat encounters together to see what groups of players could handle at various levels, but as I read more and more of my AD&D 2nd edition Monster Manual(My very first D&D book.)I began to feel bad for a lot of the creatures. And so from there I began designing encounters where often times the monsters were innocent and misunderstood, there are some of course that I still only use as bad guys like skeletons and zombies or oozes, slimes and jellies. But overall I tend to treat the ones that have sentience as more than just targets for the party to slaughter, this usually throws new players for a loop. Anyways, can't wait for the next video. Take care and have fun. =^_^=

      My problems with WotC go back to the mis 90s. I originally was calling this channel "We Love D&D" because I do however I really am not happy that D&D is owned by people who truly do not love D&D. I wish so much a company like Goodman Games or Kobold Press owned D&D.
