That is a very interesting perspective. It's a matter of how much air guitar you play to VH and of course listen, and just generally think about the band in general. Your comment made me realize I have actually spent a significant time of my life thinking about their music, remembering the one and only concert I've been to, and nowadays watching/listening to interviews and that. Michael Anthony is by far the happiest. His years with Sammy are priceless. Van Halen treated him badly and im glad he's with Sammy to this day.

I've been a Van Halen fan since the 70's when I was a teenager, but this video is the first time I've ever heard Alex's voice.
Seriously you never heard his voice until now!?? That's wild because Alex was not shy about speaking his mind and he also has done tons of interviews.
Honestly, first time. I'm 58 and 99% of the time, its been Dave's or Sammy's voice from Van Halen on the radio, doing the interviews. As I've grown older, my taste in music has expanded and by the time internet happened and we had access to videos, etc., I moved on to other genres. I still enjoy learning new things about the bands that I loved as a teenager.
Just yesterday, I put on some old rock that I had previously recorded, D.O.A from VH II. Love that song.

Michael Anthony I tend to believe and think has handled his money better than the other guys. Just my gut feeling and opinion. He comes across very humble, conservative and polite.
@Rich Krikorian Eddie had a really bad cocaine addiction for many years, but believe it or not, learned a lot about investing from his wife Valerie.
David Lee Roth blew through money really bad for many years, but managed to get his shit together. Michael Anthony stayed out of the tabloids but has mismanaged his money a bit. Alex has done the best at staying out of the tabloids and most likely has kept his shit together more than the rest of them. If Alex hadn't have gotten Divorced in 1996, he would be the wealthiest person in Van Halen. & What a kickass drummer. He's never truly received the credit that he's deserved for his drum playing. I believe he's probably the coolest one in Van Halen. But because Eddie the Great is so freaking awesome, Most people over look the talent of Alex's drum playing.
Don't forget how Michael Anthony has been screwed over by the other 3. that's what happens to nice guys.

His vocal capabilities also carried what Roth COULD NOT DO … which was quite a lot on the higher register… see Loss of Control live video, for a great example. Michael’s live bass solo was awesome! Whether or not Eddie made it up and taught it to Michael, (which I think was complete B.S.) he still had to play it in front of sold out crowds which he did very well. Mike was a badass bass player live and the original Van Halen wouldn’t have been the same without his presence on stage, or on recordings.

Even the Beatles let George and Ringo have a solo or two on their albums. Bands like The Eagles and Chicago had multiple great singers. But nary a single solo with Van Halen other than Diamond Dave, Sammy, or the forgotten Gary C. (Gary who?)
I think David earned less than Michael and Eddie because he left VH at their peak and Sammy took the lead. VH continued on to make loads of $$ but David not as much. Still $60m is nothing to complain about.

Sammy is a great singer and didn't need Van Halen, but Van Halen needed David Lee as goofy as the guy Is, the band just wasn't the same without him. I'm glad I got to see them during the 1984 tour and I seen them again in 1995 with Our Lady Peace and Skid Row. But David Lee will always be the face of Van Halen to me.
Saw Van Halen in Phoenix around 2015. Dave was back with the band, but it was more a sad echo of a short-haired Dave. They built what looked like a four-by-four parquet floor box for him to slide around on. He didn't venture far from it. Mess up the lyrics of many of the songs - which baffled the crowd that was singing along. Still a decent show. Rock til you drop.
Sammy destroyed Van Halen....turned them into a top 40 radio band.
1984 with David Lee Roth was a classic Top 40 radio/MTV album, Van Halen's best and most famous recording ever. @@RadWorlock Sammy merely brilliantly continued that lucrative and successful trend, throwing in some classic love songs as well.
I was lucky and seen them on their first tour. They warmed up for Black Sabbath. In Chicago, 1978 I think. I'm 63 so it's a bit foggy.

There's so much this got wrong! Eddie did not live in Santa Monica, he lived his entire adult life in Pasadena CA where the 5150 studio is. He also never lived in Studio City. It's true Michael Anthony does live in Newport California but the picture they show in this clip is at his house in Glendora CA that he sold 15 years ago. I can't begin to tell you how much of the rest of this that they totally got wrong, these people aren't fans they didn't even research this very well.

Alex quit drinking in 87,nova belonged to Ed,Santa Monica home is where their mom lived Alex and Ed owned it,mikes home is in Newport Beach moved from the clover view home almost 15 years ago
Ummmm. NO!! If you actually did your research on google!! Their house growing up was in Pasadena CA! Went to the High school there. Ed's 5150 studio and last residence to my knowledge is on canyon road! I did the trek to all places! This was when the building of the memorial park under construction at the time. With the EVH stage now done! And the complex they played when they were young that has a plaque on the side of it commerating it. Have pics! The garage is still there
However there is a privacy fence around it in the alley! And went to the liquor store just around the corner where they bought their liquor. Where they carved Van Halen in the fresh concrete by the curb at the time! A pilgrimage? I felt Ed's prencense at each place! And I'm so not a religious person!!

Sam said greatest hits albums are for old performers that aren't really relevant , like Sammy is now . He can't even sell the equivalent of gold album sales . Gotta set the record straight here: Alex's black Dodge p/u at 6:17 is wrongly called a "cab over engine" or COE for short. That would be more accurately used to describe Eddie's Dodge from earlier in this vid for obvious reasons. Look at the body or face of the cab from a side-profile and the term basically explains itself....

I have a 69 Fender Precision w/Jazz Neck at the time custom color, Ocean Turqoise, block inlay on rosewood neck/bought at the music store I worked for in 1969. 2024 and Fender Custom Shop says "Sorry we won't touch it because you don't have a receipt"; although I do have owners manual with assembler name of "E Paxton", only Custom Shop in Colorado is HB Woodsong, Boulder. I thought Fender had control of their channel. I believe HB Woodsong is telling Fender that no receipt, no work. If they would do this to a Senior, think what they'll do to YOU. Buyer Beware.

I lived in Norwalk California in the 60’s until 1987. I saw Van Halen play a battle of the bands in Norwalk in 1974. The band sounded great. But Roth’s voice not so good. 2 years later. Kiss bass player Gene Simons signed the band. And Roth’s voice got much better.
