- Island ecosystems are some of the most beautiful and diverse ecosystems on this planet. Unfortunately just like may other beautiful things, island ecosystems are also very fragile. Natural disasters and invasive species can completely wipe our native species and sometime just 1 invader can cause a lot of damage. In this video i will be going through just a few of these stories as i will be going through 5 island ecosystems that have been destroyed by 1 animal.

As a Kiwi, I'm only too aware of the damage caused by invasive species. What I really find incomprehensible with the stoat (and weasel) story, is that they were introduced in order to destroy another introduced species: the rabbit. You would think, wouldn't you, that having blundered so comprehensively with that introduction, and having seen the devastation wrought by no fewer than three species of introduced rat, the settlers might have been a little more diffident about yet another introduction? At the very least, just put them on one island first, and see what happened. But no, they blithely introduced stoats and weasels to the two major islands, and as stoats are magnificent swimmers, they spread themselves effectively to many of the offshore islands. Add escaped and now feral ferrets to the mix and it's astonishing that some birds DID survive. Sadly, many New Zealand endemic species now only exist due to unceasing work to protect them. Unlike most places, if human beings were suddenly wiped out, New Zealand would be worse off and many of its animals and plants would soon be destroyed completely.
Bermuda has also been invaded by huge cane toads, it was horrific to listen to them pop under car wheels too many over the road to avoid.
If I was there I’d just keep rolling over them
@@TerribleGamer-101I do but you have to clean the tires
You would have if you wanted to get anywhere, hated these creatures for what they done to native lizards and young birds, bigger ones were almost big as footballs. You would love rains that when toad piled up on side road awaiting their demise.
Are they in all the islands?
@@Cssisabeautifulthang yeah because they built a tolerance to salt water so they just swim to the other islands
Bermudian conservationist here. Many thanks for highlighting us and the biggest bane of my exsistence. They're an absolute plague. We are doing our part on the mainland and are seeing some promising results employeeing some of my new methods.
Tsuki, I love your videos so could you please upload a video about 5 successful animal reintroductions from around the world
Ye pls do it
yeah that's a great suggestion and i'm sure i'll get around to it soon :)
@TsukiCove could you please include cheetah reintroduction in India
@@beam8596 I would agree with this too.

As a local in Guam, I can confirm snakes sightings are getting rarer and rarer. Usually one can see a snake on the fence at night during the rainy season where they try to find houses to hole up in. I’m not sure if it’s because of dwindling prey items and the fact that the residents and pets take care of the vermin, but I’ve seen the decrease in snakes. Also had some run ins with them that sometimes unfortunately appear too late like an example of a full grown adult strangling two puppies in my neighbor’s yard. Normally one is equipped with a machete or even a slipper to beat the head down. But my take is much faster and appearing more humane. Simply grab it by the tail and wiggle it to avoid it climbing up itself or position itself for attack. Make sure you’re next to a hard surface and just whack the head against the pavement or rock. Like how the Hulk did to Loki in The Avengers. Remember, no legs, no claws, no resistance.
I used to live in Guam 2018-2021. I would hear stories about the snakes but i have never seen them alive in the besides deeper in the jungle. Thats how rare they are getting.
@@roderickhouston1435 Eaten themselves out of food.
Something that happened to feral dogs in a few places also historically often poorly recorded because of the short period it took from plague to dying out.
How about Hawaii with the Mongoose….they also have massive problems with feral cats, rats (hence the mongoose) and giant snails too. Love the videos
Okinawa also has a mongoose problem. They prey on the Okinawan rail instead of the pit vipers they were meant to control.
Hawaii has been screwed over by so many different invasive species. I really do hope its ecosystem can recover somehow.
In the end the real most invasive species is people
not an island, but in my parts of the world you cant find one of the native snail anymore... and the invator snail ruins so many plant lives, gardens and can even cause damage to birds and other animals that feed on snails. We are pretty much told to just gather the invasive snail if we find em.. and salt em
I understand the problems they Cause to Biodiversity , But the Idea of a Weasel going all John Wick on a bunch of birds just so cool . Btw , will you make a video on misunderstood animals
but weasels are actually not really smart
they also sometimes wil ltry to attack birds like Herons ,Storks ,Seagulls ,Ravens and many more
with not really a good ending for the Weasle
the most stupid fight i ever seen was a Weasle (stoat) attacking a full groen heron
then getting picked up by the heron multiple times and just slammed onto the ground
one even once attakced on of my chickens and my rooster protectet them and trampled onto the weasel and broke its back after that the chickens startet pecking it to death
these things arent smart just the same idiots as honeybadghers who pick fights for no reason and more then often getting destroyed in the process
cause even most ppl dont know
more htne 80 % of the time a honey badgher wil lget heavily injured or even killed by other animals
cause if a leoprad or lions wants to kill it ,,they kill it
the only thing that savers them normaly is ,,the pure ,,not worht the trouble gimmic
these guys will also attack Cats meafles ,,and other predators for no real reason
well theyr reason is they get scared but instead of runnign away they think its a good idea to go offensive and attack
normaly it works cause the predator maybe thinks its not worth the trouble
but if the predator dont thinks like this ,,the Stoad is dead
same with honey badhgers its the same thing instead of runnign away attack
but if lions leopards ,,pythons etc really want to kill a honey badger ,,,,,well they kill it ,,,no matter how fierce it might be

7:32 thank you for including the Laughing Owl I love it
Love this channel
9:11 you know it’s interesting but Arnie kinda looks like a Titan sized Stoat. Fortunately I think if we gave him the resources and left him in New Zealand for a week he’d take care of the stoat problem
love the vids btw
Thanks i appreciate the support :)
Nearly 100k let’s go
You tell very interesting facts. Great job👍👍👍, my friend🤝🤝🤝🤝🤝!
thanks i appreciate it :)
Yay. A Bermuda video part
Honestly, cats are destroying island ecosystems everywhere, not just the Galápagos Islands. This is why they are one of the worst invasive species around.
Will you please record your sound louder? It's always very quiet. Other than that I love your channel!!! 👍👍👍
I wonder if diatomaceous earthcould help stop the giant snails. As a hobby farmwr we would use diatomaceous earth on our gardens to help control things like slugs.
Everyone talks about the Ivory Billed Woodpecker being extinct. There was a big effort to find a breeding pair someone said he saw in Arkansas a while back. But essentially the same woodpecker is alive and well in Cuba. Can't we perhaps reintroduce the Cuban bird to the US and have them again? Parts of Louisiana and East Texas have declining populations and are becoming more wild. Maybe put the Cuban birds there?
Guam is economically prosperous because of tax and import duty exemptions in both US and Japanese law. They even have a beautiful K-Mart providing tax free shopping to Japanese residents of some of the outer territories. Americans can ship twice as much from Japan for personal use if they go to Guam on the way home.
Of course, all this cargo in and out of Guam is how the snake got there. But at least Guam is way wealthier than other US Pacific territories.
If you've ever thought that you were just one individual, and couldn't possibly make a difference. 🌈
Weirdly, the cane toad that's conquering australia is in severe decline in bermuda
I can't remember where, but I heard of a case where a single cat was responsible for causing the extinction of all the birds on an island....
to be true ther was only a single spec of bird on this island
it was flightless and jsut the size of a mouse
the cat killed 12 birds and thats it (if the old story was true)
the thing is it allways only tells about the cat but the guy who was there too
tryd himself on many accasions to kill the birds so he can sell them to collectors
and to be very specific this bird spec went exticnt on the mainland already hundrets of years prior
and if there where only 12 on this tine little island (its just less then 2 km² in size)
then they would have gone extinct sooner or later on theyr own
not a story of destruction per se, but it would be neat to see you do a video about ascension island, an isolated island where joseph hooker and charles darwin convinced the british navy to import large numbers of trees, resulting in a truly unusual ecology of native and introduced species
As much as some people won’t admit, humans are by far the greatest invasive species.
Stoats in New Zealand be like: Bad Play.
"When pet cats are kept indoorsmthey cause no problem at all" biggest lie right here
you got me there
Brown rats are also commonly called Norway rats despite that they’re not even from Norway
The American, Australian and German cockroaches are not from America, Australia or Germany.
I don't care where they are from, I know where they are going soon enough if they aren't smart enough to stay away from me, and it ain't to join the carnival. Fact
Back then, the people didn't realize the damage they've been doing. Now, they have to protect the islands' native species and put the invaders under control.
Christmas Island has been devastated by the yellow crazy ant, including it's famous red land crabs.
16 hours lets gooooooo
I always like the cat call outs. They should be treated like so many other pets. Kept indoors. And if they are outdoors they should be in a large escape proof enclosure, in a pet carrier, or on a leash.
You forgot about the rats and pigs which the Dutch colonists brought to the Island of Mauritius. The Dodo literally went extinct in only a few years.
African Giant Snails are so hardy man. They generally stick to warmer climates here in South Africa, but even where I live, where it can drop to - 5, you occasionally see one.
Giant African Snails also eat concrete, stucco, and paint.
Wtf?😮
@@jasonedenburg9427they want the calcium for their shells
I've been to Guam, and it's weird that you almost never see birds there.
1:55 humans have left the chat
I like how people think we evolved here while also destroying every ecosystem and inevitability the entire planet on our own.
we can never forget that it's not these animals fault, all those tragedies are human's fault. they are there becouse of us, so they don't deserve to be tortured or killed inhumanely. they are not the villains, we are.
Does anything preadte on cats in the Galapagos islands?
you mean predate ?
nope
thers no big predators on these islands so nothing eats them
i can jsut see Seagulls snatching small kittens or attacking an old/injured cat but thats it
Yeah I'll never forgive my spelling.@@Kurominos1
ah its alright :)@@enezjaniw493
i actually allways want to see what kind of cats other continents have/got
simply cause im From Austria (central europe) and we have a lot of outdoor cats especially around farms
but Tbh ,,,, 90 % of the things these cats catch are mice of diffrent groups like normal woodmice ,house mice ,,voles and so
sometimes they catch a butterfly or grashoppers (mostly very young cats who learn how to hunt cause they try it on everything
birds that commonly get cought are sparrows and blue/great tits
the most common birds around here
even we have large flocks of starlings i never seen a cat actually get one nor do they get young phesants or quails
they also never try theyr luck on young ravens, crows or magpies otherwise the parents will peck the cat and actually injure them badly
snakes ,frogs and lizards are also extremly rarely and if then its mostly slowworms (a legless lizard or Walllizards the most common reptile in europe
maybe its cause european ecosystems are used to cats to be around
same as asian and african ecosystems
maybe thats why these dont have that much of a problem with cats
islands on the otherhand will allways have problems with literally anythign brought to them @@zebedeemadness2672
well we def speed it up
but in the end it would have been anyway
i mean there where populations of Felis lybica lybica in southern europe
together with the european wildcat in certain areas and im pretty sure these guys hybridized already long before houscats came there
i mean in my area we have eastern greenlizards and western green lizards and both spec meet in northern italy southern austria and they hybridize like crazy with each other @@zebedeemadness2672
I love red squirrels. They are cool species that can run fast enough from danger. They had to have evolved with hind limbs that could help them build boost in every of their step.
I saw a barred owl with a dead squirrel in front of my house this morning. The local barred owl couple has been having some territorial conflict the last few days. Look up "barred owls caterwauling" to hear how mated pairs establish their territory. It really is one of the spookiest sounds in North America if you don't know what it is.
This video is excellent, BUT, very hard to watch. The damage we have done to ecosystems heretofore, makes me wince. We need more restoration work.
Something relatable here*
6:10 Flightless bats of new Zealand,
no land mammals.,.
Wait, but how did the snail destroy the Cuban ecosystem? Is it being harmful to agriculture really the same thing?
It goes like this: When a new herbivore is introduced, more native plants get eaten.
More native plants being eaten by the invasive species means that the native herbivores have less to eat, and they die by starvation.
With more native herbivores dying, there is then less for the predators to eat and they also starve.
How about Mauritius?
Thats why keep your cats indoors
