  • So in my previous video i melted down some gold scrap and made a gold ingot, well now I'm turning that into a ring without the use of a template, mill or draw plate.

    I love how it's not perfect in geometry. It has that wonderful handmade look that says unique.
    I've never made a piece of jewelery from scratch or using a template but I do hope to make a victorian style engagement ring, with wooden inlay, for my girlfriend in the near future. Your videos are gonna help me do it. Thanks!

    I enjoyed this. It is good to see many different techniques and then put all the info together.
    I learned with coin ring process, then eventually made my own bullions and hammered into a coin-shape, then used coin process, followed by turning on a drill to shape. Started with 6 or 7 silvers, then finally did one beautiful 14k.
    Lots of time and work, but no solder joint. I plan to try again soon with casting. ;)

    Do you need solder.. or did you just use tiny 10k gold pieces and melt them together with some flux.?

    What kind of sand do you have to use and where can I get it? Also could you tell me please what's the white powder you added to the good before melting it and if I can follow the same steps to cast a silver ring

    • @natecharleswatches
      @natecharleswatches  4 года назад +2

      So the sand is known as delft clay or green sand and you can get it online or make your own. the white powder is borax

    Do you use a Flux for the soldering? Were the little solder pieces some fragments you created from the bar or can they be bought in that form? Like the method I want to make my missus a ring for her birthday next year I reckon I might give it a go!

    • @jerryholt5290
      @jerryholt5290 4 года назад

      You can cast an ingot by melting it in a groove cut into a charcoal block, then hammer it into a strip. Flux is not essential, but recommended.

    I want to do this process for melting some gold into a nose ring about as thick as that ring but all I have for gold is a collectible gold eagle, what would be the best method of getting good melt grade gold (999) instead of melting this coin?

    for sandcasting with a mold, how do you determine how much metal to use, and say I wanted to make a silver-gold ring, what proportions would I use?

    • @natecharleswatches

      I guesstimate all the time tbh. Does it look like enough? Yes? add a little more just to be safe

      If doing a full ring casting (without the use of solders) you would need about 60-80% more metal to be able to pour into the mold. Creating the ring itself. Say if the ring you make is 5g worth of gold you'll need atleast 8-10g minimum, as you can see in this video the "sprue" on the top of the mold(button) cools of quicker than the metal going into the mold. If you only used 5g in a 5g ring it will never form totally.

  • @GlennMeder
    @GlennMeder 4 года назад

    Are those little slivers of metal that you add to the gaps just pure gold? What is the purity of the gold?

    20181206: I was expecting something simpler. So why connect the casting frame together? Why not use a left over toilet paper roll?....I'm thinking of making a mould made of ceramic to use over and over to the exact shape.

    would this be possible with placer gold? or is it not pure enough

    • @argentummoonjewellery3503
      @argentummoonjewellery3503 4 года назад

      It would actually likely be more pure than his. His is made from 9ct it 37.5% gold. More gold nuggets are around 58% to 90% gold. The problem is they would be brittle from other contaminants such as lead. The alloys used in jewellery are copper silver and zinc.

    • @jerryholt5290
      @jerryholt5290 4 года назад

      Some placer gold would work, but most would not be malleable because of impurities. I have bought some Alaskan placer gold in the
      of high purity that I could do anything with.

    Couldn't you just roll it into a long piece and then form it?

    • @jerryholt5290
      @jerryholt5290 4 года назад +4

      That would have been much better but I suppose he doesn't have a rolling mill. he could have done it with a hammer though. That would have made it much easier to bend into the ring shape. Also I would have repoured the ingot rather that have that many solder joints.

  • @fransnagel

    why don't you just cast the entire ring in one go? That's what the cast is for.

    kind of a odd video. I see you have some proper equipment and yet you did things like someone with crude tools. it like you just bought what you thoug you needed to make jewelry but yet did not buy the basic tools most jewelry will start off with. I mean I can somewhat understand but. the thing you should have just to start with is a decent torch ring plyers and a wire mold and possible a wire sizer. I would say get a rooler but I know they are expensive.
