Henry Cotton shot a 65 in his second round of the open, he later went on to win the tournament.
I love finding old golf balls out on the course, makes me wonder just how long they have been sitting in that one spot.

300 yards wasn't Jack's normal hit, most guys didn't go over 250 yards back then. But yeah Jack's swing speed was clocked around 119mph at 50 years old if memory serves.

Back in those late 70's and early 80's here in the US of A, I had a steady supply of the so called "British Balls". My Grandparents went to Scotland every Spring to Ayrshire. They would bring me back 2 dozen (usually the Dunlops) which would generally last me through the fall at least. I LOVED their flight- that low starting, rising bullet draw off the tee that cut under the wind and would then roll out. Since I played most of my rounds at or near the coast where the wind would really be a factor, they were perfect. And the smaller size meant that, to me, the hole looked GIGANTIC and I couldn't miss a putt.

I found a Dunlop 65 at St. Andrews in the rough while looking for my ball. Nice souvenir that was free. I once bought a couple dozen Titleist Ballata covered balls (around 1992). They were crazy spinners, super soft touch, but would go egg shaped after 1 or 2 holes. Hit them thin and you’d get a smiley.

More on subject, I remember playing balls like this, surprisingly sturdy, and then there was the infamous balata, such a joy to cut a smile into it with my out of control lefty swing! Entry slot into the last green is fabulous, what a great course! Thx for sharing Peter, this was a great start to my Saturday!

These were the balls I learned to play golf with when I was a kid: Dunlop, Spalding and Wilson. Too many thin shots and you could put what we called a smiley face on the ball. The leading edge of the club would cut the ball and it looked like a smiley face. 😀
