I always hate when somebody proclaims loudly the greatness of a movie that they absolutely loved; and then ask me what I thought with an excited expectation on his face. Always awkward telling them that I thought it sucked while apologizing.

I had so much backlash for comparing First Omen to Immaculate, there were people willing to die on the hill that those movies had nothing in common. There's definitely a majority of people who want their opinions confirmed and not to hear actual original opinions.
I have a small channel. It was focused mostly on music for the first 7 years, and everyone was cool. But since I’ve shifted to film reviews like 6 months ago, I’ve gotten more shitty comments than I ever did, haha. Not sure why, but it’s definitely a thing.
In the most part I agree, but two minor points. One, I think it's fair to compare two reviews, regardless of movie similarity, if say, you dismissed a major plot hole or inconsistency, in one movie while you criticized a similar one in another movie. And second, if the person making the comment about you liking one movie while not liking another wanted to get a "rise" out of you, they got it. Thank you for the work you put into your reviews, I appreciate it.

You hated THAT movie but love THIS one!?”, they’re the type of people whom NEVER contributes with anything them selves 🤣 They’ll never have the guts to make reviews of their own, actually SHOWING them selves on camera. I wanna apologize for some of the nasty things I've said to you in the past also I wanna say I'm glad you hung in there and kept putting stuff out. I've said it before and I stand on it but you're one of the best movie critics out now. You gotta ignore the hate of the haters man. think what Cisco and Ebert would do if people came for them as they come for you now- stay classy. but I will say this, if a cat make threats about your fam YOU NEED TO TAKE ACTION. Report their ass, contact the authorities because when it gets to the point where fools are threatening people online over movie reviews, something serious HAS TO BE DONE. I just don't dig that man. I myself, OTOH, thought that Open Range w/Kevin Costner, et al. was one of the worst films ever made, but it does have a fanbase, and I try to respect that fanbase.
My response to that and I've made the same argument but also said what I am about to say "oh you loved this movie but didn't like this movie? But ya know, everybody is like that. So, what ever. Who cares?" That is my response. I also like to say "That's movie blasphemy, but hey, I blasphemy all the time." I know for a fact that you can easily make the same exact argument against me "You didn't like this, but you loved that?" So it makes the whole thing totally moot. I watch several movie channels and there are times when I absolutely 100% disagree with the reviewer. I still watch their content. As much as I've bashed Ebert and Siskel, etc...they did make some good points and some good reviews.

Reviewing a movie in such a way that realizes other people might like/not like it, to me is being a rational human being. I HATED Zone of Interest, but I obviously realize why people might like it
I don't need a film critic to agree with my views on everything, in order for them to be valuable to me. What I DO need is for them to be more or less consistent in HOW they review entertainment. Even when they have a strong bias, it's important that they say it "now keep in mind that I hate this actor, so you can take my dislike of this movie..." As long as they are consistent and honest about their opinion, I can hear their breakdown and have a guess about how well we are going to align.
Your outlook on movie reviews is exactly what I look for in any review for a product an unbiased truth from your point of view that's what people should really want and your Matrix resurrections review is what got me to subscribe
In the past, there were critics I didn't care for and I didn't agree with their recommendations, so I didn't bother watching or reading their reviews while there were others, like Siskel & Ebert for example, where their tastes were mostly aligned with mine, so I valued their reviews as a way to choose better movies and avoid a lot of garbage, particularly when going to movie theatres. This is the same case with Adam where I enjoy his reviews while also accepting that there will be movies I love that he won't care for [like 'Nosferatu' (1922), etc.] because we are all individuals with unique tastes (and some people out there have no taste at all and could be entertained watching a test pattern as long as it had 'Star Wars' or "Marvel" stamped on it). :)
Wow, now that's a reference: Good 'ol S&E! ... Actually, they were often quite insufferable, especially when there was that random art house movie or latest Woody Allen film that you knew they were going to fawn over. But...they were interesting to watch, and consistent enough within their own criteria, that part of the fun watching them became trying to guess their opinion correctly. That's the same with Adam. Very fun to watch, and he's consistent enough that (outside of his own "Woody moments") you can sometimes guess where he's going to fall on a certain movie. He's also been more right than he's been wrong in pegging movies I've seen. S&E were that way, too. Sometimes they were off, but more often than not you could bank on their reviews as to whether or not YOU were going to like a given movie.
@@damonappel, yes, I found Siskel & Ebert to be off when it came to a lot of horror or sci-fi movies versus dramas or as you put it, art house movies, that appeal to film critics, but often struggle or bomb at the box office because they don't appeal to broad audiences. People are less and less capable of having a filter (aka. not saying "this sucks" to one's face) and of accepting that maybe the rest of the world doesn't have the same opinion as them, on any topic really, ranging from very controversial like politics to highly subjective like music, movies, art etc. There are no spaces for healthy discourses as well let's be real. The age of the forums is gone, even though they were the platform to allow healthy discourses, all the newer platforms like Reddit etc. are just not a good replacement, and the comments on Yt videos or under IG posts or X are just not a good alternative.

One kind of review backfire effect I strongly dislike is when someone asks you what you thought about a certain historical film, expecting that you'd like everything about it because it's historical, but then you say that you didn't care for it because of this, this and this, and then they say that you need to like the film just because it's about a historical event. Let's be honest-- I didn't care for that Titanic film of 1997 because of that romantic filler between Jack and Rose, and the (IMO) unnecessary nudity (which was not artistic, also IMO, but was just plain vulgar), but then there are these fanboys who insist that everything portrayed in that picture (including the Jack and Rose romance) actually happened in 1912. I don't recall that romance actually happening in 1912 (nor did I read it in any accounts), but people will still defend the entire contents of the picture as being what actually happened on that fateful night in 1912, and say that if you didn't care for that, you're denying history.
I'll never understand this current generation that failed to learn to the simple concept of "Change the channel if you don't like it." Either one enjoys and respects what a film critic has to say or one doesn't and if one doesn't, then it's time to seek out someone else and move on with one's life.
Yep, unfortunately trying to address someone's opinion, particularly with facts, can lead to what is called the "backfire effect", which can cause them to double down on their view. And while it's not a huge deal when it happens with movies, anyone in the United States knows how problematic it is in p*litics.

As a guy who really liked Sound of Freedom, his review was about the film itself, and no movie is without sin. His gripes were compelling. It wasn’t like the Rolling Stone piece. It was just a standard Adam review. He just didn’t like it as much as me.
I believe we all know what the underlying triggering criticism was from which caused this rant: Godzilla Minus One fans. 😅 (Who will forever be wrong about that terrible movie, while Adam continues to be right.)
Feeling the need to respond to critics and trolls is a big mistakes and here is why 1- It gives them the attention they crave, will embolden them and you will be more criticized since they know it get's to you. 2- Giving them energy will negatively affect you life and your creativity. 3- You're displaying, in the open, you have a thin skin. Yep, unfortunately trying to address someone's opinion, particularly with facts, can lead to what is called the "backfire effect", which can cause them to double down on their view. And while it's not a huge deal when it happens with movies, anyone in the United States knows how problematic it is in p*litics.
Daggone it, Adam! I thought you promised not to waste any breath on fools this year. We're all too old for that mess lol But you're right. The time some folks spend leaving hostile comments is weird. I'd love to say it's generational, but plenty of seasoned adults aren't any better.
I'm like you. If I don't like a video or channel, I move on. I don't thumbs down to be a jerk or make a point, I don't comment. I just leave. It's the easiest thing in the world to do nothing instead of bending over backwards to do the most.
The specific argument that you should like or hate one thing because you felt whatever way about another is silly in every context. It's like saying, "You think this chick is hot but not THAT one? But they're both redheads!" lol Even with identical twins, people will find something about one they like more than the other, and no films are identical. Why hold them to a different standard than we hold anything else? We like what we like, case by case.

I believe we all know what the underlying triggering criticism was from which caused this rant: Godzilla Minus One fans. 😅 (Who will forever be wrong about that terrible movie, while Adam continues to be right.)
Feeling the need to respond to critics and trolls is a big mistakes and here is why 1- It gives them the attention they crave, will embolden them and you will be more criticized since they know it get's to you. 2- Giving them energy will negatively affect you life and your creativity. 3- You're displaying, in the open, you have a thin skin. The only very minor critique I have on you sir is it would be better for you to research the names of the characters on movies before you do the reviews, but like you said it is Adam Does Movies and is not meant to be taken super seriously, so it is not even really a critique. You like some movies, you do not like some other movies, that is what makes the world go around. I really think you should tell us why your opinion on Cast Away ending changed b/c that is the one movie you said your viewpoint altered as an adult. Just a suggestion kind sir.
